The right way to stop Copilot depends on the app, device and account. In supported Windows and Mac desktop editions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, open the app’s Copilot settings and clear Enable Copilot. Outlook has a separate account-level toggle, while Excel formula suggestions have their own independent switches. Hiding a Copilot icon only changes its location or visibility; it does not disable Copilot.
Choose the control that matches what you want to stop
Microsoft does not provide one documented switch that disables every Copilot prompt and AI feature in every Microsoft application. Use the narrowest control that solves the problem:
| What you want to stop | Use this control | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| All Copilot capabilities in Word, Excel or PowerPoint | Clear Enable Copilot | Supported Windows and Mac desktop apps; personal Microsoft accounts |
| Copilot in Outlook | Turn off the Outlook Copilot toggle | Outlook on the web, new Outlook for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android |
| Only Excel formula completion or formula-by-example suggestions | Clear one or both formula-suggestion checkboxes | Excel for Windows and Excel for the web |
| The Copilot entry point or icon | Hide, move or reposition the button | Display and layout only; Copilot remains available |
| The app-level switch is missing | Disable content-analysis connected experiences | Broader Microsoft 365 privacy setting; may affect unrelated features |
Your account type matters. Microsoft documents the Enable Copilot checkbox for apps signed in with a personal Microsoft account; it is not available for work or school accounts. Platform and app version also determine whether a setting appears.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check these details before changing anything
- Identify the exact app: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote or Outlook may use different controls.
- Identify the platform: Windows desktop, Mac desktop, web, iOS or Android.
- Check whether you are signed in with a personal Microsoft account or an organization account.
- Save open documents before changing a setting, because most changes require closing and reopening the app.
- If another person uses the same Windows computer, remember that the desktop Copilot setting affects anyone using that device.
These checks prevent a common mistake: looking for a Windows menu in the web version, or expecting a personal-account checkbox in a work-managed installation.

Turn off Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint on Windows
These steps disable Copilot capabilities in the individual desktop app. The setting is per app and per device, so repeat it in every Office app and on every computer where you want Copilot disabled.
- Open Word, Excel or PowerPoint and sign in with your personal Microsoft account.
- Select File, then Options.
- Open the Copilot category.
- Clear Enable Copilot.
- Select OK.
- Close and restart the application.
Microsoft describes the result as disabling the Copilot icon on the ribbon and preventing Copilot capabilities in that app. Because the preference is local to the app and device, turning it off in Word does not automatically turn it off in Excel or PowerPoint. Microsoft also states that the setting affects anyone who uses that Windows device.
For example, clearing the checkbox in Word does not stop prompts in an Excel workbook on the same computer. Open Excel separately and repeat the path. If you use a laptop and a desktop PC, make the change on both devices. This is different from Outlook, whose supported toggle follows the account.
Windows version floors
Microsoft lists these minimum versions for the app-level control, as stated on March 13, 2025:
| App | Windows version listed by Microsoft |
|---|---|
| Word | Version 2412 |
| Excel | Version 2501 |
| PowerPoint | Version 2501 |
| OneNote | Version 2502 (Microsoft lists Windows support) |
If Copilot is absent from File > Options, check the installed version and update Microsoft 365 where your organization or account permits it. A work or school account will not gain this checkbox simply by updating, because Microsoft documents the control for personal accounts.
Version numbers are availability floors, not a promise that every channel or tenant shows the same label. If your build is newer but the category is still missing, verify the account type and whether an administrator controls Copilot. If the app is below the listed floor, install available updates and restart before checking again.
Turn off Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint on Mac
- Open the relevant app.
- Use the app menu in the macOS menu bar and select Preferences.
- Open Authoring and Proofing Tools, then Copilot.
- Clear Enable Copilot.
- Close and restart the app.
Repeat the procedure separately in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and on each Mac where you want the change. Microsoft’s listed Mac availability floor is Word 16.93 and Excel and PowerPoint 16.93.2. The cited support information lists OneNote for Windows but does not list a corresponding Mac control.

The Mac path is in the application’s Preferences rather than in a Windows-style File and Options dialog. If you have multiple Microsoft accounts in the same app, confirm that the intended account is active before evaluating the result. Restarting matters: the ribbon and Copilot pane may remain visible until the application reloads.
Platform limits for Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Microsoft says the Enable Copilot checkbox cannot be used to turn Copilot off in the iOS, Android or web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Those versions may expose other account, privacy or feature-specific controls, but the desktop checkbox described above is not available there.

For work or school accounts, Copilot administration is handled differently from the personal-account setting. If you do not see the checkbox, first identify the account type and platform before troubleshooting the installation. An organization may manage availability centrally, so an individual user may need to contact an administrator rather than change a local preference.
Do not interpret the lack of a checkbox on a phone or in a browser as evidence that the installation is broken. It is a documented platform limitation. Use the Outlook control or the Excel formula controls when those are available for your specific task.
Turn off Copilot in Outlook
Outlook uses a separate toggle whose behavior differs from the Word, Excel and PowerPoint setting. The Outlook preference syncs across Outlook devices signed in to the same account.
Outlook for iOS, Android and Mac
- Open Quick Settings.
- Select Copilot.
- Turn off Copilot (the exact switch label can vary slightly by release).
Microsoft says mobile users may need the latest Outlook app. On Mac, the documented requirement is Outlook version 16.95.3 or later.
Outlook on the web and new Outlook for Windows
- Open Settings.
- Select Copilot.
- Turn off the Copilot option and close the settings panel.
The setting is account-wide for Outlook, unlike the per-app, per-device checkbox in the desktop Office apps. Microsoft’s guidance gives no estimated availability date for this toggle in classic Outlook for Windows. If you use classic Outlook, the absence of the switch may therefore be expected rather than a configuration error.
After changing the setting, allow other Outlook sessions to refresh or sign out and back in if a prompt remains visible. The account-level scope means you should not need to repeat the toggle separately on every supported phone, Mac or web browser using that account.

Stop Copilot formula suggestions in Excel without disabling everything
Excel has two separate suggestion features. You can disable either one or both while leaving other Copilot functionality available.
What the two checkboxes control
- Show Copilot suggestions for completing formulas: proposes a formula when you begin entering a formula with
=. - Show Copilot suggestions for formulas based on patterns in your content: detects a pattern in example values and proposes a formula to fill a column.
The first setting addresses a suggestion that appears as you type a formula. The second addresses Excel inferring a formula from neighboring or example values. If both kinds of cards are appearing, clear both boxes; disabling only one leaves the other behavior enabled.
Excel for Windows
- Select File, then Options.
- Open Copilot.
- Clear Show Copilot suggestions for completing formulas, Show Copilot suggestions for formulas based on patterns in your content, or both.
- Select OK.
Excel for the web
- Open File, then open the Options (…) menu.
- Select Copilot Settings.
- Clear the relevant formula-suggestion checkbox or checkboxes.
- Select OK.
Excel for the web also lets you turn off formula completion directly from a suggestion card: select More options (…), then choose Turn off Copilot suggestions for completing formulas. Microsoft says the choice persists until you turn it back on.

These controls are a better fit than disabling all Copilot features when the annoyance is limited to formula cards. They do not change ordinary formulas you write yourself, and they do not address Copilot prompts elsewhere in Excel.

Use this sequence before changing broader privacy settings:
- Confirm whether you are using a personal account or a work or school account.
- Check whether you are in a supported desktop app rather than a web or mobile version.
- Check the app version against Microsoft’s listed version floors.
- Update the app where updates are available, then restart it.
- For Outlook, verify whether you are using new Outlook or classic Outlook for Windows.
- Check whether you are looking for a general Copilot switch when the actual issue is Excel formula completion.
If the app-level control still is not available, Microsoft documents a broader privacy fallback: turn off Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
Windows Microsoft 365 apps
- Select File, then Account.
- Open Account Privacy.
- Select Manage Settings.
- Turn off Turn on experiences that analyze your content.
- Confirm the change and restart the apps.
Mac Microsoft 365 apps
- Open the app menu and select Preferences.
- Select Personal Settings, then Privacy.
- Open Connected Experiences and select Manage Connected Experiences.
- Turn off the content-analysis experience setting.
- Confirm and restart the apps.
Microsoft says a change made in one app takes effect in other Microsoft 365 apps the next time they open. This is a broad switch, not a Copilot-only control. It can disable features such as Outlook suggested replies, Word text predictions, PowerPoint Designer and automatic image alt text. Connected experiences can also include design recommendations, editing suggestions, data insights, Dictate and Translator. Microsoft notes that disabling connected experiences may affect co-authoring and online file storage, although certain essential services remain available. Use this fallback only when the narrower app or feature setting is unavailable or insufficient.
Before using the fallback, list the features you rely on. Someone who wants to stop a single Word prompt may not want to lose Designer in PowerPoint or suggested replies in Outlook. Reopen each affected app after changing privacy settings so the new policy is loaded, then test the feature that prompted the change.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Hiding the Copilot button is not the same as turning off Copilot
There are two separate actions:
- Functional disablement: clearing Enable Copilot prevents Copilot capabilities in that supported app.
- Entry-point adjustment: hiding, moving or docking a button changes where you access Copilot but does not remove the underlying capability.
Microsoft says removing the Copilot icon from the ribbon does not turn Copilot off; it can remain available through other interfaces, including the shortcut menu.
The Copilot Dynamic Action Button
In Word, Excel and PowerPoint, the newer Copilot Dynamic Action Button consolidates the Copilot entry point. Moving it to the ribbon or docking it changes its position, not Copilot’s capabilities. Microsoft says the button appears only for people with Copilot access and does not affect Outlook.
Microsoft states that worldwide rollout began in April 2026 and was scheduled to complete by June 2026. Customers in GCC, GCC High and DoD environments were scheduled to begin seeing it in October 2026. Rollout timing is not a guarantee that every account has the same interface at the same moment; regional, tenant and release differences can change what appears.
If your goal is simply a less distracting layout, repositioning the button is appropriate. If you need Copilot unavailable for privacy, compliance or workflow reasons, use the functional setting instead. A hidden button should never be treated as proof that Copilot has been disabled.

Copilot settings in other Microsoft apps
The controls above do not create a universal off switch for every Microsoft product. Microsoft’s frequently asked questions state that Copilot cannot be turned off in Designer, Notepad or Paint through these controls. Those apps therefore require a different product, account or administrative decision if their AI features are the concern.
This distinction also explains why disabling Copilot in Word does not necessarily remove every AI-assisted feature in Microsoft 365. Connected experiences, Designer, text predictions and other tools can have separate controls. Match the setting to the feature you actually see rather than assuming every prompt comes from the same Copilot switch.
Which method should you use?
| Your symptom | Best first action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Copilot pane, commands or prompts appear in Word, Excel or PowerPoint | Clear Enable Copilot in that app | Disables Copilot capabilities rather than merely hiding an icon |
| Copilot appears in Outlook mail or calendar workflows | Turn off Outlook’s Copilot toggle | Uses Outlook’s account-synced control |
| Only formula cards appear while entering Excel formulas | Clear the formula-completion checkbox | Leaves unrelated Copilot features untouched |
| Excel proposes formulas from example patterns | Clear the formula-by-pattern checkbox | Targets pattern-based suggestions specifically |
| You cannot find an app-level switch | Check account, platform and version; then consider connected-experience privacy settings | The broad fallback can remove other useful features |
| You only dislike the icon’s location | Move or hide the button | Changes the interface without disabling Copilot |
Common problems and fixes
The checkbox is not listed under Options
Check the account type first. Microsoft documents the checkbox for personal Microsoft accounts, not work or school accounts. Next check that you are using a supported Windows or Mac desktop release. The control is not provided in the iOS, Android or web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Copilot returned after switching devices
The Word, Excel and PowerPoint setting is per app and per device. Repeat the change in each app on the new device. Outlook is different: its toggle syncs across Outlook devices using the same account.
Formula suggestions continue after disabling Copilot
Disable both Excel formula controls if both behaviors are appearing. Formula completion and pattern-based formula suggestions are separate features. In Excel for the web, use the suggestion card’s More options (…) menu if you want to disable completion from the prompt itself.
The Copilot icon is gone but prompts still appear
You probably changed the button’s visibility or position rather than disabling Copilot. Use the app-level Enable Copilot setting where supported, or the Outlook toggle for Outlook.
Turning off connected experiences removed other tools
That behavior is expected for the broad privacy fallback. Re-enable connected experiences if you need features such as Designer, text predictions, suggested replies, Dictate or Translator, then use a narrower Copilot or Excel formula setting when one is available.
The setting changed but the old interface remains
Close every window for the affected app and reopen it. The desktop checkbox and connected-experience preference require a restart, and Outlook clients may need time to synchronize the account setting. If the control still has no effect, confirm that you changed the setting in the same account and app edition that is displaying the prompt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsImportant scope limits
- The documented settings differ by app, platform, account and release; a path that works in Windows desktop Word may not exist in web Word or classic Outlook for Windows.
- Disabling Copilot in one app does not disable it in every other app.
- Hiding an icon does not disable Copilot capabilities.
- Microsoft’s support material states that Copilot cannot be turned off in Designer, Notepad or Paint through these controls.
- Version floors and interface labels can change as Microsoft rolls out updates, so verify the current support instructions if a control is missing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn off Copilot everywhere with one switch?
No single documented switch disables every Copilot prompt and AI feature across all Microsoft apps. Word, Excel and PowerPoint use an app-level desktop setting, Outlook uses its own account-synced toggle, and Excel formula suggestions have separate controls.

Why is Enable Copilot missing in Word or Excel?
The checkbox is documented for supported Windows and Mac desktop apps signed in with a personal Microsoft account. It is not available in the iOS, Android or web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and Microsoft does not document it for work or school accounts.
Does turning off Copilot in Word turn it off in Excel?
No. The desktop setting is per app and per device. Repeat the change separately in Excel and PowerPoint, and on each computer where you want Copilot disabled.
Does the Outlook Copilot setting sync to my other devices?
Yes. Microsoft documents the Outlook choice as account-wide across supported Outlook devices signed in with the same account. Classic Outlook for Windows does not have an estimated availability date for this toggle.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I stop only Excel formula suggestions?
In Excel, clear one or both controls for completing formulas and for formulas based on patterns in your content. Windows uses File > Options > Copilot; Excel for the web uses File > Options (…) > Copilot Settings. The web version also offers a Turn off command from a suggestion card.
What happens if I disable experiences that analyze my content?
It is a broad privacy change, not a Copilot-only switch. It may disable Outlook suggested replies, Word text predictions, PowerPoint Designer, automatic image alt text, design recommendations, editing suggestions, data insights, Dictate and Translator. Microsoft also notes possible effects on co-authoring and online file storage.
Does hiding the Copilot button disable Copilot?
No. Hiding, moving or docking the button changes the entry point only. Microsoft says Copilot may remain available through other interfaces, including the shortcut menu.
Can Copilot be turned off in Designer, Notepad or Paint?
Microsoft’s Copilot subscription FAQ says these controls cannot turn Copilot off in Designer, Notepad or Paint. Their availability must be handled through any product-specific or administrative options provided for those apps.
The Bottom Line
Use the narrowest setting that matches the problem. On supported Windows and Mac desktop editions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, clear Enable Copilot for each app and device. In Outlook, turn off the separate account-synced Copilot toggle. If Excel alone is producing formula cards, disable its completion and pattern-based suggestion controls instead. Treat connected-experience privacy settings as a last resort because they can remove unrelated Microsoft 365 features, and remember that hiding an icon never disables Copilot itself.
