Claude does not document a dedicated switch that guarantees the removal of every emotional or relationship-framing phrase. You can, however, steer its communication style toward neutral, direct wording. Start with the Concise or Formal preset, then create a custom style that explicitly rejects emotional language. Use profile response preferences when the rule should apply across your account, project instructions when it should apply only to one project, or an in-chat reminder for a single conversation.
What “turn off emotional language” means in Claude
People use this request to describe several related behaviors: affectionate wording, terms of endearment, statements that imply personal attachment, reassurance framed as a relationship, or conversational filler that sounds emotionally invested. A request such as “Can you stop sounding affectionate?” usually means the reader wants concise, task-focused answers rather than a simulated personal relationship.
Claude’s documented personalization controls are designed to steer tone and format. Anthropic’s Help Center does not describe a guaranteed “emotional language off” mode. The practical goal is therefore to give Claude a clear style constraint and apply it at the scope you need. Even with that instruction, an occasional phrase can appear when the model is responding to a sensitive topic, following a user’s wording, or trying to be polite. Treat the controls as guidance, not as a hard filter.

These controls can coexist. For example, you can use a Formal style globally, add a stricter preference in your profile, and then add project-specific terminology for a technical workspace. The most specific instruction normally gives Claude the clearest immediate direction.

Fastest method: select Concise or Formal
- Open Claude and start a new message.
- Open the Search and tools menu.
- Choose Use style.
- Select Concise for short, economical answers or Formal for a more restrained professional tone.
Anthropic’s documented preset list also includes Normal and Explanatory. Concise and Formal are the useful starting points when you want less conversational warmth. The selection carries into new messages, edits and retries made while that style is active.
A preset may reduce friendly framing without eliminating it. If Claude still says things such as “I’m happy to help,” “That sounds difficult,” or “I’m here for you,” move to a custom style with explicit exclusions.
Create a custom style that rejects relational phrasing
Anthropic’s style feature lets you create and edit a style either by supplying a writing sample or by describing the desired style. The advanced custom-instructions option is the most direct way to specify what Claude should avoid.
- Open the Search and tools menu.
- Select Use style, then choose Create & edit styles.
- Choose the option for advanced custom instructions rather than relying only on a sample.
- Describe the desired voice in concrete, testable terms.
- Save the style and select it for the conversation.
You can adapt this instruction:
Use neutral, direct language. Avoid emotional or relational phrasing, terms of endearment, and statements implying personal attachment. Focus on the task, evidence, and next steps. Do not describe yourself as a friend, companion, or person with feelings. If a question concerns emotions, discuss them objectively unless I explicitly ask for supportive language.The wording above is an example instruction, not an Anthropic preset. Its value comes from naming both the preferred behavior and the unwanted behavior. “Be less emotional” is vague; “avoid terms of endearment and statements implying personal attachment” gives Claude clearer boundaries.
Make the style operational, not merely descriptive
Include rules Claude can follow while generating an answer:
- State the conclusion or action first.
- Use neutral descriptions instead of sympathy, praise or affection.
- Do not use pet names, emojis or relationship metaphors.
- Do not claim feelings, needs, loyalty or personal attachment.
- Ask clarifying questions only when they change the answer.
- When discussing a distressing subject, acknowledge the topic briefly and then provide factual options, safety information or next steps.
That last rule prevents an overcorrection. A completely mechanical response can be unhelpful when someone is asking about grief, danger or a mental-health crisis. You can request a neutral tone while still allowing clear safety guidance.

Set an account-wide preference
If you want the same neutral style in most conversations, put the instruction in your profile response preferences. Anthropic’s personalization documentation says these preferences are considered across conversations.
- Open the profile menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Find What preferences should Claude consider in responses?
- Add a concise version of your neutral-language rule and save it.
A profile preference is broader than a style selected for one chat. Write it so that it remains useful for varied tasks rather than tying it to one project. For example:
Prefer neutral, direct, professional responses. Avoid affectionate or relationship-framing language, emotional reassurance, and claims of personal feelings or attachment. Prioritize facts, uncertainty, and actionable steps.After saving, test the preference in a fresh conversation. Ask for a short explanation, a rewrite and an answer to a personal-sounding question. If one answer drifts, give a local reminder instead of repeatedly editing the account setting.
Apply the rule only inside a project
Project instructions are appropriate when a workspace has a particular editorial or professional voice. Anthropic’s project documentation describes instructions as guidance for chats within that project and notes that projects are available on paid Claude plans.
- Open the relevant project.
- Open the project’s instructions or project settings panel.
- Add the neutral-language rule.
- Save it, then start or reopen a chat in that project.
Keep project instructions specific to the work. A technical project might use:
Write in a neutral engineering style. Do not use terms of endearment, emotional reassurance, or language implying a personal relationship. Use headings, assumptions, evidence, and explicit next steps.A project instruction does not automatically change chats outside that project. If you later move the discussion to a normal conversation, add the preference there or rely on your profile setting.

Use an in-chat instruction for a one-off correction
For a single exchange, tell Claude exactly what to change before asking the next question. Anthropic’s prompt-design guidance recommends explicit English instructions and specifying what you want.
Try:
For the rest of this conversation, use neutral, direct language. Do not use affectionate terms, emotional reassurance, or statements that imply personal attachment. Answer the task and identify uncertainty plainly.If a response contains unwanted wording, correct it without restarting:
Rewrite the previous answer in a neutral, impersonal style. Remove emotional and relational phrasing, keep the facts, and preserve the same recommendations.This correction is useful for testing a preference before you save it. It is also the quickest recovery when a model response follows the emotional framing of your question.

How to reduce common types of unwanted wording
Affection and terms of endearment
Explicitly prohibit words such as “dear,” “friend,” “love,” or other pet names if they are a problem. Ask Claude to address you directly without a nickname and to omit emojis. Do not assume that “professional” alone covers every term you dislike.
Claims of feelings or personal attachment
Tell Claude not to say that it feels, cares, misses, worries, is proud, or is always here for you. Ask it to describe the information or action instead. For example, replace “I’m glad this helped” with “The configuration is now applied.”
Relationship framing
Some answers use phrases such as “we can work through this together” or “I’m on your side.” Add a rule against describing Claude as a friend, companion, teammate or confidant unless that framing is specifically requested.

Emotional reassurance
If you want factual answers even when a subject is sensitive, ask for a brief acknowledgment followed by practical information. This preserves clarity without asking Claude to ignore safety-related context.

Include “Do not praise the user or validate feelings unless the user asks for that form of support.” Otherwise, Claude may interpret a request for politeness as a request for encouragement.
Why Claude may still sound emotional
- The instruction is broad. “Be less emotional” does not define which words or behaviors to remove.
- The user’s wording sets a frame. If a prompt asks Claude to act as a caring friend, that request can conflict with a general preference.
- Different controls have different scope. A project rule does not govern a chat outside the project, and an in-chat reminder may not carry to a new conversation.
- Safety and sensitivity affect wording. Claude may acknowledge distress or recommend immediate help when the subject indicates risk.
- Features and labels can change. Anthropic’s interface, plan availability and rollout status may differ by account or change over time.
These behaviors do not indicate that a hidden “emotional mode” is enabled. They reflect the way style and instruction-following interact with the current prompt and context.
Troubleshoot tone drift
Drift in one answer
- Quote the unwanted sentence or describe it precisely.
- Ask for a rewrite that removes emotional and relational wording.
- Continue with the next question using the same neutral instruction.
Drift in many conversations
- Check which style is selected under Search and tools → Use style.
- Review the saved custom style for conflicting instructions such as “warm,” “friendly,” or “conversational.”
- Check Settings → What preferences should Claude consider in responses? for an account-wide rule.
- If the work is inside a project, review its project instructions as well.
Conflicting instructions
Remove or reconcile rules that point in opposite directions. “Use a warm, encouraging voice” conflicts with “avoid emotional reassurance.” Replace them with a precise compromise, such as “be courteous and clear, but do not use affection, praise or personal-attachment language.”
A style change seems ineffective
Check whether you selected the style before sending the message and whether you are testing a new message, edit or retry covered by that selection. Then test with a prompt that does not itself request emotional role-play. If the account does not show the same labels described here, the feature may not have reached that account or the interface may have changed.
How to test whether the preference works
Use a small, repeatable test instead of judging one answer. Send prompts from different categories:

- Neutral information: “Explain how a router assigns an IP address in five bullet points.”
- Correction: “Rewrite this paragraph for a formal report.”
- Personal framing: “I made a mistake at work. What should I do next?”
- Sensitive subject: “List practical steps for finding crisis support in my area.”
Look for the specific behaviors you prohibited: pet names, declarations of feeling, relationship metaphors, praise and unnecessary reassurance. Also check that the answers remain useful, retain safety information and do not become so terse that they omit assumptions or next steps.
Recommended instruction patterns
Strictly impersonal
Use an impersonal, technical tone. No terms of endearment, emotional reassurance, praise, emojis, or claims of feelings, care, loyalty, or personal attachment. Focus on evidence and actions.Neutral but courteous
Be courteous and respectful without sounding affectionate. Avoid relationship framing and emotional validation. State the answer first, then explain assumptions, limitations, and next steps.Professional editing
Edit and write as a professional document editor. Remove conversational filler, sympathy, praise, and personal-attachment language while preserving meaning, safety warnings, and uncertainty.Neutral support for sensitive topics
Use calm, factual language. Do not role-play a friend or claim personal feelings. Combining every prohibition can make responses rigid; add only the constraints that solve the wording you actually see.
What Claude’s controls cannot guarantee
Anthropic’s documented pages establish that styles, profile preferences, project instructions and direct prompts can shape communication. They do not establish a feature that mechanically strips every emotional phrase from every response. A model can still produce a conventional courtesy phrase, mirror the emotional language in a prompt, or use an empathetic acknowledgment where safety context makes it relevant.

Ask Claude to check its draft against your rule, or use a separate text-processing system that your organization has evaluated. Do not treat a style preference as a compliance guarantee for legal, clinical, customer-support or other regulated communications.
Practical recommendation
Start with Concise or Formal. If that is not sufficient, create a custom style containing explicit prohibitions and a preferred response structure. Put the rule in profile preferences for account-wide use, project instructions for one workspace, and an in-chat message for a temporary correction. This is the documented way to make Claude more neutral and direct, while recognizing that no reviewed Anthropic help page promises complete elimination of emotional or relational language.
