To stop ChatGPT from using memory for personalization, open Settings > Personalization > Memory and switch off the memory or reference controls shown on your account. The labels can differ by plan, region, platform, and workspace; you may see Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories.
That switch changes future personalization, but it is not a data-erasure command. Existing chats remain, and saved memories can remain until you remove them. To clear information already retained, delete the relevant saved-memory item, the chat where it was shared, and any separate Library file or connected-app copy that applies.
No paid app, privacy device, or third-party cleaner is required. ChatGPT’s own settings and deletion controls are the appropriate tools.
What ChatGPT memory includes
“Memory” can refer to several related sources of personalization. A saved memory is an item ChatGPT keeps for future conversations, such as a preference or recurring detail. Reference chat history lets the service draw on information from earlier conversations even when it is not shown as a discrete saved-memory entry. Some accounts also show a memory summary and controls for inspecting individual saved items.

Those sources are separate from the text of a current conversation, Custom Instructions, files stored in Library, and information available through connected apps. Turning off one source does not automatically erase the others. That is why a complete cleanup requires identifying where the information originated.
Where to turn off ChatGPT memory
Use the ChatGPT settings menu:
- Open ChatGPT and select your account menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Personalization.
- Select Memory.
- Turn off the memory or reference option available on your account.
Depending on the current interface, the controls may be named Memory, Reference saved memories, or Reference chat history. Some accounts show a memory summary and a Manage or Saved memories area instead. OpenAI documents the current behavior in its Memory in ChatGPT help article.
Not every account has the same switches. Availability can depend on your plan, country or region, app or web platform, and whether an administrator controls a managed workspace. If a control is missing, it may not be enabled for that account rather than hidden behind another menu.
How the two reference controls relate
In some versions, turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history. Where saved-memory reference remains on, chat-history reference may be offered as a separate switch. Do not assume that every account can control them independently; follow the options actually displayed in Settings > Personalization > Memory.
Web, mobile, and managed-workspace differences
The account-menu location can look different on the web, iOS, and Android, but the general path remains Settings > Personalization > Memory. A work or school workspace can have administrator-controlled availability, so a member may be unable to change a setting that a personal account can change. Check that you are signed into the intended account and workspace before troubleshooting the menu.
What switching Memory off actually changes
Turning off Memory stops the relevant memory-based personalization going forward. It does not delete your past conversations or automatically remove every item ChatGPT may have saved. OpenAI’s own wording is: “Turning off Memory does not delete your past chats.”
Reference chat history has an additional consequence. When you turn that feature off, information ChatGPT remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days. The original conversations are not deleted by that process. You must delete those chats separately if you want them removed from your account and scheduled for system deletion.

Turning off Reference chat history also does not delete saved memories. A saved-memory entry can survive after chat-history reference is disabled, so inspect and remove those entries when your goal is to erase information rather than merely stop future personalization.
Memory and personalization controls do not promise that context will never be used for safety or security. OpenAI says limited uses of context can still occur in rare, high-risk situations. Treat the setting as a control over ordinary personalization, not as a guarantee that no context is processed under any circumstance.

How to remove information ChatGPT has already saved
Use the following sequence when you want a piece of information gone rather than simply ignored in future replies.
1. Delete the saved-memory item
In Settings > Personalization > Memory, open Manage or Saved memories if that option is present. Find the item and delete it. A memory summary is only a high-level view and may omit details or sources, so inspect the available source information rather than assuming the summary lists everything.

Use the memory-management controls for deletion.
2. Delete the conversation where the information was shared
Delete the original chat from your history. Deleting a chat removes it from the account view immediately and schedules permanent system deletion within 30 days, subject to OpenAI’s stated de-identification, security, and legal exceptions. The retention policy is described in Chat and file retention in ChatGPT.
Deleting the chat alone may not remove a separate saved-memory entry. Complete both actions when the information exists in both places. Search archived and regular conversations if you do not remember the chat’s location; archiving is not the same as deleting.
3. Check Library files and connected apps
If the information came from an uploaded document, image, or other file, check whether it was saved separately in Library and delete that item there. A file in Library is a separate source from the conversation that referenced it. Removing the chat does not necessarily remove a Library copy.
Also review connected apps. Remove the relevant item in the connected service or disconnect the app when that is the applicable way to revoke access. A memory deletion cannot erase a copy that remains in an external service, and deleting a ChatGPT conversation cannot rewrite the source service.
4. Review Custom Instructions and the current chat
If ChatGPT repeats a preference after Memory is disabled, inspect Custom Instructions and the messages in the conversation itself. Those are different mechanisms. A current chat can still contain the information, and Custom Instructions can continue supplying it even when saved-memory reference is off.
5. Allow time for deletion to propagate
Memory changes and deletions may not appear everywhere instantly. OpenAI says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. This is different from the user-facing removal of the item and does not mean the deleted memory should continue appearing as ordinary personalization.

Use Temporary Chat for a single conversation
Temporary Chat is a per-conversation choice, useful when you do not want a new discussion to create or update memory. OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ states that “Temporary chats start non-personalized by default.”

Starting a Temporary Chat
- Start a new conversation in ChatGPT.
- Choose the Temporary Chat option before sending the first message.
- Review the personalization choice shown before the conversation begins.
- Start the chat only after selecting the behavior you want.
A Temporary Chat starts non-personalized by default, but you can choose to personalize it before starting. That choice cannot be changed after the conversation begins, so select it before sending sensitive details.
Personalized versus non-personalized Temporary Chat

Neither type creates or updates memories while it remains temporary. Temporary Chats do not appear in normal history unless you save them. If you save one, it becomes a regular chat and then follows your account’s personalization and model-improvement settings.
OpenAI may keep a copy of an unsaved Temporary Chat for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Temporary Chat therefore limits personalization and history exposure; it is not an instant, zero-retention channel.
Do not confuse Memory with model training
Memory controls and the model-improvement preference govern different things. To stop chats from being used to improve models, open Settings > Data Controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. The relevant settings are documented in Data controls in ChatGPT.
Disabling model improvement does not delete saved memories, hide existing chats, or turn off Memory. Your conversations can still appear in history after the training preference is disabled. Conversely, switching off Memory does not automatically change the model-improvement preference.

What happens to chats, memories, and files after deletion
Saved memories
Deleting an entry removes it from the memory controls, but OpenAI may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. During propagation, a memory may not disappear simultaneously from every interface.
Regular chats
A deleted chat disappears from your account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days, except for the exceptions described in the retention policy. Deleting a chat is separate from deleting a saved memory created from that chat.
Library files
A file stored in Library has its own lifecycle. Delete it from Library as well as deleting the associated conversation when you want both sources removed.

Temporary Chats
An unsaved Temporary Chat does not appear in normal history, but OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Saving the conversation changes it into a regular chat, after which ordinary history, personalization, and model-improvement settings apply.

These periods are maximums or schedules described by OpenAI, not a promise that every item remains for the entire period. They also do not make the different data sources interchangeable: removing one does not automatically remove the others.
Troubleshoot missing controls or unexpected references
The Memory menu is not shown
- Confirm that you are in the account and workspace you intend to change.
- Check Settings > Personalization rather than Data Controls; the menus serve different purposes.
- Consider plan, region, platform, or workspace-admin availability. A managed workspace may disable or centrally control Memory.
- Update or reload the ChatGPT app or web session, then check the same path again.
ChatGPT still mentions something after Memory is off
- Check whether the reference came from the current conversation itself, Custom Instructions, a connected app, or an uploaded file rather than saved Memory.
- Open Manage or Saved memories and remove any matching item.
- Delete the source chat and any Library file that contains the information.
- Allow time for deletion and synchronization to propagate.
You turned off chat-history reference but the information remains
Turning off Reference chat history schedules remembered information for deletion; it does not delete saved memories or the original chats. Remove those separately when you need complete source-level cleanup.
You saved a Temporary Chat by mistake
Saving converts it into a regular chat. Delete the saved conversation if you do not want it in history, and inspect Memory and any files or connected-app sources separately.
Recent changes and documentation
OpenAI’s release notes dated June 4, 2026 describe a memory upgrade intended to keep memory context more up to date and reduce stale or contradictory saved memories. Interface names and availability can still change, so use the labels currently displayed in your account rather than relying on an older screenshot. - Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Turn off the relevant Memory, saved-memory reference, or chat-history reference control.
- Open Manage or Saved memories and delete each item you want removed.
- Delete every source chat in which the information was supplied.
- Remove related files from Library.
- Review connected apps and delete or disconnect the applicable source.
- Check Custom Instructions if the detail continues to appear.
- If you also want to stop model improvement, turn off Improve the model for everyone under Settings > Data Controls.
- For a one-off sensitive conversation, start a new Temporary Chat and choose its personalization state before sending a message.
- Allow the documented retention windows for deletion and propagation to complete.
Frequently overlooked points
Turning off a preference is reversible, while deleting a chat or memory is a separate action. If you later turn Memory back on, information that still exists in eligible sources may be available for personalization again. For the strongest cleanup, remove the saved item and every source before re-enabling any reference feature.
Similarly, deleting a chat is not the same as deleting an account, and a Temporary Chat is not the same as an encrypted, zero-retention channel. The controls reduce ordinary personalization or remove specific account sources, while safety, security, legal, and debugging retention rules can still apply.

Does turning off ChatGPT Memory delete my chats?
No. OpenAI says turning off Memory does not delete past chats. Delete the relevant conversations separately, and remove saved-memory entries if you want the information erased from both places.

How do I delete something ChatGPT remembers?
Open Settings > Personalization > Memory, choose Manage or Saved memories when available, and delete the item. Then delete the chat where it was shared and check Library files or connected apps for separate copies.
What is the difference between Reference saved memories and Reference chat history?

No. Improve the model for everyone is a separate Data Controls preference. Turning it off does not delete memories or chats, and turning off Memory does not change that training preference.
Is Memory available in every ChatGPT account?
No. Controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. A managed workspace administrator may control availability, so a missing setting may reflect account configuration rather than a hidden menu.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > Personalization > Memory to stop ordinary personalization, but do not treat the switch as deletion. Remove saved-memory entries, source chats, Library files, and connected-app copies separately. Use Temporary Chat for a single conversation, and use Settings > Data Controls if your separate goal is to stop model improvement.
