To stop ChatGPT from using personal details, open Settings > Personalization > Memory and turn off the available memory controls. To remove a teenager’s conversation, delete that chat separately from the chat-history menu. These actions solve different problems: turning off Memory does not erase existing chats, and deleting a chat does not necessarily remove a saved memory created from it.
Use the sequence below when you need both personalization stopped and a specific conversation removed. Account type, plan, region, platform and workspace policy can change the labels you see.
What each privacy control actually does
ChatGPT has several controls that are easy to confuse. Choose the one that matches your goal rather than assuming one switch erases everything.

OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT help article states: “Turning off Memory does not delete your past chats.” Treat that sentence as the key distinction when deciding what to do next.

Turn off ChatGPT Memory
1. Open the Memory controls
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account you want to change.
- Open the account menu and select Settings.
- Choose Personalization.
- Open Memory.
Depending on your account, the page may use labels such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage or Saved memories. The controls can differ between the web app, mobile apps, plans, regions and managed workspaces.
2. Disable the controls you do not want
Turn off Reference saved memories or the main Memory switch to stop ChatGPT from using saved personal details for personalization. If your page also shows Reference chat history, turn that off when you do not want ChatGPT to use information remembered from previous conversations.
These are related but not identical settings. Turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days. The conversations that supplied that information remain in your chat history until you delete them. Saved memories are stored separately and are not automatically removed just because Reference chat history is disabled.
3. Check for a separate saved-memory list
Some accounts show Manage or Saved memories inside the Memory page. Open it and review the entries. Remove any detail you do not want retained. Disabling Memory prevents future use of the feature, but it is still prudent to delete sensitive entries when your goal is removal rather than merely stopping personalization.
4. If the account is linked to a parent
For a linked teen account, a parent or guardian can manage supported memory controls through Parental controls. The exact controls available depend on the account and rollout. A parent should change only the settings presented in that control panel; a linked parent is not given a transcript of the teen’s conversations.
Remove a saved detail completely
Turning off Memory and deleting a conversation are separate operations. If ChatGPT remembered a detail that you want gone, use this order:
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Memory, open Manage or Saved memories, and delete the relevant memory entry.
- Find the conversation in which the detail was first shared and delete that chat from the history controls.
- Search for other copies of the same information in chats, uploaded files in your Library, or connected apps. Remove those copies using the controls for the relevant feature.
Deleting only the conversation does not necessarily remove a separate saved memory. Conversely, deleting the memory entry does not delete the original conversation. When the same detail appears in several places, each source has to be handled separately.
Delete a teen’s ChatGPT conversation
Delete one chat on the web or in the app
- Open the ChatGPT account’s conversation list.
- Locate the conversation to remove. Use the search or list controls available on your platform if you need to find an older chat.
- Open the conversation’s More menu, usually shown as three dots, and choose Delete.
- Confirm the deletion when ChatGPT asks.
The conversation is removed from the account view immediately. It is then scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days, except when it has already been de-identified and disassociated or must be retained longer for security or legal obligations. Deletion is not reversible, so save anything the teen is legally or practically required to keep before confirming.

Deleting a chat is not the same as hiding it
Choose Archive when the goal is to remove a conversation from the visible history list but keep it available. Archiving does not alter retention and does not remove memories, files or other copies. Use Delete only when you want the conversation to enter the deletion process.
What happens if the chat does not disappear
- Confirm that you deleted the correct conversation and completed the confirmation step.
- Refresh the page or reopen the app; a temporary display delay does not change the deletion request.
- Check that you are signed in to the same account and workspace where the chat was created.
- If the conversation was in a managed workspace, an administrator’s retention or legal-hold policy may apply.
- Remember that removing a chat does not remove a saved memory derived from it; inspect the Memory page separately.
Use Temporary Chat for future teen conversations
Temporary Chat is useful when a teen wants a conversation that should not become part of normal history or personalization. Start a new chat and select the Temporary option, or choose the unpersonalized option shown before starting when that choice is available on the account.
- A temporary conversation does not appear in normal history unless it is saved.
- It does not create or update memories while it remains temporary.
- OpenAI may retain temporary chats for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
- Saving the conversation converts it to a regular chat subject to the account’s ordinary history and data controls.
Temporary Chat is a forward-looking safeguard. It does not convert previously stored conversations into temporary chats and does not erase existing saved memories.
Teen accounts, parents and privacy boundaries
How the teen experience is enabled
ChatGPT for Teens is automatically enabled for eligible accounts that ChatGPT identifies as belonging to someone under 18. The teen does not need to switch the experience on manually. Availability and the exact safety settings can change as the rollout develops.
What a linked parent can and cannot do
A linked parent or guardian can manage selected settings through Parental controls, including supported memory controls. Parental controls do not let the parent read or monitor the teen’s conversations. For limited safety notifications, OpenAI says it shares only the information needed to help support the teen’s safety, rather than providing a complete conversation history.
What changes when the user turns 18
When ChatGPT identifies the account holder as 18 or older, it may gradually move the account out of the teen experience and remove teen protections. The transition is rolling out over time, not necessarily on one universal date. A linked parental-controls connection ends during that transition. If a setting or control disappears after the account changes status, that may explain the difference rather than a failed deletion.
Do not confuse Memory with model-improvement settings
Improve the model for everyone is a separate data-control choice. Turning it off affects whether eligible content may be used to improve models; it does not delete chats, hide them from the history list, or remove saved memories. If the objective is to erase a specific teen conversation, use the conversation’s Delete command. If the objective is to stop personalization, use the Memory controls under Personalization. Both settings can be changed independently.

You want ChatGPT to stop personalizing replies
Turn off Memory under Settings > Personalization > Memory. If shown, also turn off Reference chat history. Existing chats will still be present unless you delete them.

You want one teen conversation removed
Delete that conversation from the chat-history menu and confirm. It will leave the account view immediately and cannot be restored. Inspect saved memories separately if the conversation contained information ChatGPT had already remembered.
You want a remembered detail removed everywhere you can find it
Delete the saved-memory entry, delete the chat where it was shared, and remove duplicate copies in Library files or connected apps. A single deletion action is not sufficient when the information exists in multiple storage locations.
You only want the chat out of sight
Archive it. This hides the conversation without changing retention and is reversible.

You want future chats that do not create memories
Start a Temporary Chat and verify that the temporary or unpersonalized option is selected before sending sensitive information. Do not save that chat if you want it to remain temporary.
Common problems and their explanations
The Memory option is missing
Memory controls are not identical for every account. Check that you are in the correct account and workspace, then look under Settings > Personalization for alternative labels such as Reference saved memories or Memory summary. Plan, region, platform and staged feature availability can all affect what appears. In a managed workspace, an administrator’s policy may control availability.
A parent cannot find a teen’s chat list
That is expected: Parental controls provide selected settings and limited safety support, not a conversation-monitoring dashboard. The teen must use the account’s own chat-history controls to delete a conversation, unless a specific supported control is presented to the linked parent.
A deleted chat is gone, but ChatGPT still seems to know the detail
Check Settings > Personalization > Memory for a saved entry. Delete it, then remove other source copies. A deleted chat and a saved memory are separate records with separate controls.

That switch concerns information remembered from chats, not the chats themselves. The original conversations remain in history until you delete them individually. The remembered information is scheduled for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days, while saved memories follow their own controls.

You need evidence of what was deleted
Deletion removes the chat from the account view and cannot be undone. Before deleting, record any information you are entitled to retain, such as dates or school-related details, without copying sensitive content into another service unnecessarily. Afterward, verify that the conversation no longer appears in the correct account and workspace.
A practical privacy checklist
- Decide whether the goal is to stop personalization, delete a chat, hide a chat, or prevent future history and memory creation.
- For personalization, open Settings > Personalization > Memory and disable the relevant Memory controls.
- For a remembered detail, remove the saved-memory entry as well as the chat and any other source copy.
- For a teen conversation, use the chat’s Delete command and confirm; do not choose Archive if permanent removal is the goal.
- For future sensitive conversations, select Temporary Chat before sending the first message and do not save it afterward.
- Keep model-improvement settings separate from deletion and personalization decisions.
- If the account is linked to a parent, use Parental controls for supported settings while respecting the boundary that parents do not receive routine conversation access.
- Recheck the account type if the user turns 18, because the teen experience and parental link may change during the transition.
A two-pass cleanup for families
For a thorough cleanup, handle settings first and content second. On the first pass, the account holder or linked parent changes the applicable Memory controls and confirms whether Reference chat history is also disabled. This prevents new personalization from the settings you no longer want. On the second pass, review the saved-memory list, identify the exact conversation or conversations involved, and delete each one individually. Check Library files and connected apps only when the same detail was also placed there; deleting a chat cannot remove a separate copy.
Keep the account and workspace visible while doing this. A teen may have a personal account and a school or employer workspace, with different retention or administrator rules. Deleting a conversation in one place does not affect a similarly named conversation in another. If several family members share a device, sign out of the wrong account before making changes so a parent does not accidentally alter their own settings instead of the teen’s.

There are three different moments to distinguish. First, the chat disappears from the account view when deletion is confirmed. Second, OpenAI generally schedules the deleted chat for permanent deletion within 30 days. Third, limited exceptions can extend retention: data that has already been de-identified and disassociated may not be tied back to the account, and security or legal obligations can require longer retention. The 30-day window is therefore a general schedule, not a promise that every copy is erased at the same instant.
Turning off Reference chat history has its own schedule: information remembered from prior chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days, while the original chats remain until separately deleted. Temporary Chat can also be retained for up to 30 days for safety, even though it normally does not appear in history or create memories. These timelines do not make Archive equivalent to Delete; an archived chat remains retained and can be restored.
Before you confirm deletion
- Decide whether the teen needs a copy for school, a support request, a safeguarding record or another legitimate purpose. Once deleted, the chat cannot be restored.
- Note the conversation title or date if you need to verify the correct item, but avoid exporting sensitive material to an unnecessary service.
- Check for attachments or Library files that should be handled separately.
- After confirming, refresh the same account and workspace to verify that the conversation is no longer visible.
These checks do not change OpenAI’s deletion schedule; they simply reduce accidental deletion and account mix-ups.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off ChatGPT Memory delete old conversations?
No. Turning off Memory stops or limits personalization, but past chats stay in the account until you delete them. OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT guidance explicitly says that turning off Memory does not delete past chats.
If I delete a teen’s chat, is the saved memory deleted too?
Not necessarily. A saved memory is separate from its source conversation. Delete the memory entry under Settings > Personalization > Memory, then delete the chat and any copies in files or connected apps.

How long does a deleted ChatGPT conversation remain?
It disappears from the account view immediately and is generally scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days. De-identified data and information retained for security or legal obligations are exceptions.
