There is no single “privacy off” switch in modern AI assistants. Chat history, saved memory or personalization, and permission to use conversations for model training are separate controls. Turn off the control that matches your goal, then delete existing chats, memories, or activity separately. Temporary or incognito modes reduce normal storage but can still be subject to safety, security, feedback, or workplace retention rules.
Three controls you must distinguish
Before changing a setting, decide what you are trying to stop. A conversation can be absent from the visible chat list yet still be retained for a limited period, used for safety review, or represented as a separate saved memory. Conversely, deleting a chat may leave a memory or derived preference that was created from it.
Chat history
History controls whether conversations appear in the assistant’s ordinary conversation list and can usually be reopened or searched. Turning history off generally affects future conversations; it does not automatically erase older chats unless the provider explicitly says it does.

Memory controls whether the assistant keeps or uses facts, preferences, or inferences from earlier interactions. Examples include a saved preference for concise answers or a profile detail inferred from previous chats. Memory may be stored separately from the conversation that produced it, so deleting one does not necessarily delete the other.

Training and product-improvement use
A training or model-improvement setting governs whether eligible conversations may be used to improve AI models. It is independent of history and memory. You can often leave history and personalization on while opting out of training, or use a temporary chat while a separate training policy still applies to other conversations.
Choose the right action

ChatGPT: disable memory, history reference, or training
The exact labels can vary by plan, region, platform, and whether the account belongs to a managed workspace. Use the account’s current settings rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Stop ChatGPT from using past chats for personalization
- Open Settings.
- Choose Personalization.
- Review the available controls. Depending on your account, you may see Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, and Manage.
- Turn off Reference chat history if you do not want new answers to draw on information from previous chats. OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days after this control is disabled.
- Leave the original conversations deleted if you want them removed from the visible history as well; turning off reference chat history does not delete those conversations.
Turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history in the documented configuration. When saved memories remain enabled, chat-history reference may be managed separately. Deleting a conversation does not necessarily remove a saved memory created from it, and deleting a saved memory does not remove the original mention from an old conversation. Check both locations.

- Open Settings.
- Choose Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
This is a separate control from memory and history. Turning it off does not remove conversations from your account’s history and does not, by itself, stop personalization based on information already available to the account.
Use a one-off Temporary Chat
- Start a new conversation and select Temporary Chat.
- Before sending the first message, choose Unpersonalized if you do not want the conversation to use existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins. A Personalized temporary chat can use those existing sources.
- Use the temporary conversation for the sensitive request.
Neither temporary choice creates or updates memories while the conversation remains temporary. Temporary chats stay out of ordinary history and are not used to improve OpenAI models while temporary, but OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. If you save the chat, it becomes a regular conversation governed by the account’s normal settings.
Claude: pause or erase memory and use an incognito chat
Claude’s availability differs by account type. The current help documentation describes memory as available by default for Free, Pro, and Max accounts on web, desktop, and mobile. Team and Enterprise owners decide whether the feature is available; it is off for each member until enabled.

Pause memory without deleting it
- Open Settings.
- Choose Memory.
- Select Pause memory.
Pausing keeps existing memories but stops Claude from using them and stops it from creating new memories. This is the reversible choice when you may want the saved profile later.
Reset and delete memory
- Go to Settings > Memory.
- Select Reset memory.
- Confirm the deletion.
Resetting deletes memories, including project memories, and cannot be undone. A deleted or expired conversation does not automatically remove a memory entry that was created from it, so review the Memory page after deleting chats.
Disable memory for one new conversation
- Start a new chat.
- Open the + menu.
- Turn off Memory.
- Send your first message only after the control is off.
That conversation does not use memory or add to it, but it remains in chat history and can be found by searching past chats.
Use Claude’s incognito chat
Incognito chat is the separate mode described as not saving the conversation to chat history or Claude memory. It is not an exemption from an organization’s retention policy: Enterprise policies can still require retention and access during the required period. Use incognito when you want to avoid ordinary history and memory, then verify your employer or school’s policy if the account is managed.
Gemini: turn off Keep Activity and past-chat personalization
Gemini has several overlapping controls. The names and availability can differ between a personal Google Account and a work, school, or supervised account.

Turn off Gemini’s Memory for past chats
- On the web, open Settings and help > Personal Intelligence.
- In the mobile app, open the profile menu and choose Personal Intelligence.
- Review or disable the Memory control for past chats.
Google documents this feature for eligible users with a personal Google Account who are at least 18 and have Keep Activity enabled. It is not available for work, school, or supervised accounts and can vary by platform or feature.

To remove information Gemini learned from earlier conversations, delete the relevant items from Gemini Apps Activity or from Recent chats. Google notes that personalization can take a short time to reflect the deletion.
Stop activity saving and model-improvement use
- Open Gemini Apps Activity.
- Choose Turn off to stop future activity saving, or Turn off and delete activity to combine the change with deletion of existing activity.
- Review the confirmation and any connected-app warning.
For personal accounts, Google says turning off Keep Activity stops future chats from appearing in Activity and from being used to train its AI models, unless you send feedback. Google may still retain conversations with the account for up to 72 hours to provide the service, process feedback, and protect users. Some Connected Apps become unavailable when this setting is off, and other Google services can continue collecting information under their own settings.
Use Gemini Temporary Chat when available
Google’s privacy guidance describes Gemini Temporary Chat as a way to avoid having Gemini remember information or use it to personalize the experience. Availability and behavior can change, so do not treat Temporary Chat as identical to turning off Keep Activity. Check the current control shown in your account and review the activity page if you need to delete older data.

Set automatic deletion for Gemini activity
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes an 18-month default auto-deletion period for Gemini Apps Activity. The setting can be changed to 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. Activity already reviewed by human reviewers may be retained for up to three years and is not deleted when ordinary account activity is deleted. These are provider-published operational periods, not guarantees that every copy disappears at the same instant.
Microsoft Copilot: separate consumer training from Microsoft 365 chat history
Copilot has materially different controls for consumer accounts and Microsoft 365 work or school accounts. Identify which experience you are using before changing a setting.
Consumer Copilot: opt out of model training
- Open Copilot on the web, desktop, or mobile app.
- Open your profile menu.
- Choose Privacy.
- Turn off the consumer conversation-training control.
Microsoft says opting out excludes future conversation activities from training those AI models. It does not mean the conversations are never used for any other purpose: Microsoft states that conversations may still support general product or system improvements and may be processed for advertising, safety, security, or compliance. Training can be off while personalization remains on, so this change alone does not stop Copilot from remembering recent conversations.

For consumer Copilot memory, deleting all memory is separate from deleting conversation history. Perform both actions when your goal is to remove the profile information and the chats that supplied it.
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat: turn off chat history and work insights
- Open Copilot Chat with your work or school account.
- Open Chat settings.
- Choose Personalization.
- Turn off Chat history. Some managed accounts show Chat history & work insights instead.
Microsoft says this schedules inferences from previous chats for deletion after 30 days. If you turn the setting back on during that 30-day period, Copilot can add those memories back. Work insights are conditional on the account and the organization’s Microsoft 365 plan.
Use Microsoft 365 temporary chat
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat’s temporary chat does not access or store personalized information, does not appear in chat history, and cannot later be referenced by you or Copilot. An organization’s retention policy can still require the data to be kept, and an IT administrator may be able to access it during that period. Temporary chat therefore changes normal Copilot behavior, not the legal or administrative rules applied to the tenant.
What to delete after changing a setting
Use a separate cleanup pass when you need to remove information already collected. The exact menu names differ, but the categories below cover the common copies of your data.
- Conversation history: delete individual chats or use the provider’s bulk-delete option.
- Saved memories: open the assistant’s Memory or Personalization page and remove entries one by one or reset them.
- Derived inferences: turn off the feature that creates them, such as reference chat history or Microsoft 365 Chat history, and observe the stated deletion window.
- Activity logs: use Gemini Apps Activity or the equivalent account activity page rather than deleting only a visible chat.
- Connected services: review app permissions and integrations. Turning off one assistant setting does not necessarily delete data held by a connected service.
- Feedback and reviewed data: check the provider’s terms because feedback or data already reviewed for safety or quality can follow a different retention schedule.

How to verify that the change worked
- Check the control again: reopen the settings page and confirm the toggle is visibly off, not merely changed on a different device or account.
- Identify the account: verify the email address, workspace, tenant, and plan. A personal account and a work account can expose different controls.
- Run a harmless test: in a new non-sensitive chat, state a unique preference, end the conversation, and ask a later chat whether it remembers it. Do not use confidential information for testing.
- Inspect history and memory: confirm whether the test appears in the chat list and whether a memory entry was created.
- Review activity: for Gemini, inspect Gemini Apps Activity; for other providers, inspect their account data or privacy page.
- Wait for the stated window: scheduled deletion is not immediate. Recheck after the provider’s published period rather than assuming a delayed result means the toggle failed.
- Check integrations: if the assistant connects to documents, email, calendars, or other apps, review those services’ own retention and permission settings.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Turning off training and expecting history to disappear
A model-improvement opt-out usually changes future training eligibility only. Delete existing conversations and review memory or personalization separately.
Deleting a chat and assuming memory is gone
Saved memories and chat-derived inferences can be separate records. Open the Memory or Personalization page and remove them directly.

Using a temporary chat that is still personalized
Some temporary modes can use existing personalization unless you select an unpersonalized option. In ChatGPT, choose Unpersonalized before sending the first message if you do not want existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins applied.
Assuming “not in history” means “not retained anywhere”
Temporary and incognito modes can still be retained for safety, security, feedback processing, legal compliance, or an organization’s required retention period.
Changing the wrong account
Consumer, work, school, supervised, Team, and Enterprise accounts can expose different controls. Sign out and back in if necessary, then confirm the account identity at the top of the settings page.

Some services can restore derived personalization when a history or personalization control is turned back on before scheduled deletion completes. Leave the setting off until the stated period has passed if deletion is your objective.
Managed accounts require an administrator check
Work and school environments can impose rules that an individual user cannot change. Workspace administrators may disable Gemini Memory, control Claude memory availability, apply Microsoft 365 retention policies, or access temporary-chat data during the required period. A local toggle can therefore change personalization without changing the organization’s legal hold, audit, security, or backup obligations. If the setting is missing, locked, or immediately reverts, ask the administrator which policy controls it and how to submit a deletion request.
A practical privacy workflow
For the strongest change available to an individual account, use this order:
- Choose the assistant and identify whether the account is personal or managed.
- Turn off memory or personalization, including reference to past chats.
- Turn off model-training or model-improvement use separately.
- Use a temporary or incognito mode for conversations that should not enter ordinary history.
- Delete old chats, memories, activity records, and connected-app data through their respective controls.
- Read the provider’s retention statement for safety, feedback, reviewers, and workplace policies.
- Verify the settings and allow the published deletion period to elapse.
This workflow prevents the most common misunderstanding: one privacy toggle changes one data use, while history, memory, training, deletion, and retention are separate decisions.
