Firefox for Android does not currently document a single global switch that disables every video from continuing after you leave the page or minimize the browser. You can stop playback that is already running with Firefox’s Open Tabs pause control or Android’s notification media controls. To prevent sites from starting media automatically, use Menu (three dots) > Settings > Privacy & security > Site settings > Autoplay and select Block audio and video.
Those are different controls. Autoplay governs media that starts without your action; background playback governs media that continues after Firefox is minimized or the page is no longer visible. The steps below show which control matches each situation, what private tabs do differently, and how to troubleshoot exceptions and site-specific behavior.
Choose the control that matches the problem
Start by identifying what you want to stop. Firefox exposes a reliable control for media that is playing now and a separate preference for future autoplay. It does not describe the autoplay preference as a master background-playback kill switch.

The distinction matters because blocking autoplay will not necessarily stop a video that you deliberately started from continuing in the background. Conversely, pausing the current tab does not prevent the next page from automatically starting another clip.

Stop a video that is playing right now
Pause from Firefox’s Open Tabs screen
- Open Firefox for Android’s home screen or start page.
- Find the Open Tabs section, which lists your currently open tabs.
- Locate the tab that is producing sound or playing video.
- Tap the Pause button shown for that playing tab.
This is the quickest Firefox-level action when you want the current stream to stop but do not want to close the tab. The page remains available, so you can return to it later and start playback manually.
Pause from Android’s notification panel
- Swipe down from the top of the Android screen to open notifications.
- Expand the media-control card if Android has collapsed it.
- Tap the pause control for Firefox’s media session.
Android’s media controls can be useful when Firefox is minimized or another app is in the foreground. The exact appearance of the card varies by Android release and phone manufacturer, but the play/pause action is supplied by the active media session rather than by a Firefox preference.
When pausing is preferable to closing the tab
Closing a tab also ends its page session, while pausing leaves the tab and its position available. If you only need silence or want to stop data use temporarily, pause first. If a page repeatedly resumes on its own, close the tab after pausing and then review the autoplay permission described below.

Mozilla’s current Firefox for Android help places autoplay controls under site settings. Use the following path rather than older instructions that refer to a Display menu.
- Open Firefox and tap Menu (the three dots).
- Tap Settings.
- Open Privacy & security.
- Tap Site settings.
- Choose Autoplay.
- Select Block audio and video.
Reload pages that were open when you changed the preference. A reload gives the site a new permission decision and stops a page that had already created a media element under the previous setting.

What each autoplay option means

“Automatically” means the page starts media without a user-initiated play action. A video that you tapped to play can still be eligible to continue when Firefox is minimized, even with autoplay blocked.
Why autoplay blocking is not a background-playback switch
Mozilla’s current help treats autoplay and background playback as separate behaviors. It says that, in regular tabs, audio or video can continue when Firefox is minimized so you can multitask. The same guidance does not document a global preference that forces all regular-tab media to stop whenever Firefox leaves the foreground.

That means there is no supported, universal path such as “Settings > Background playback > Off” in the documented Firefox for Android interface. Experimental builds, individual players, or manufacturer software could behave differently, so the precise statement is that Mozilla’s current help does not document such a global switch.
Regular tabs
For a normal browsing tab, continuing playback after minimization is permitted by Firefox, but the website or player can choose to stop. The result can therefore differ between two sites even when Firefox settings are identical.
Private tabs
Firefox pauses audio and video in private tabs when the browser is minimized. If your priority is ensuring that media stops whenever you leave Firefox, opening the page in a private tab provides that documented behavior, although it changes the tab’s privacy and session characteristics.

Site behavior can stop or continue playback
A webpage can detect that it is no longer visible. Mozilla explains that when a page moves to another tab, the Page Visibility API triggers a visibilitychange event. Sites can listen for that event and pause a player, or ignore it and continue. A site can also react to a fullscreenchange event when fullscreen status changes.

Consequently, a video that stops as soon as you minimize Firefox may be following the site’s own visibility or fullscreen policy, not obeying a Firefox-wide “background playback off” preference. The opposite can happen too: a site may keep playing because its player deliberately supports background audio or video.
Do not confuse the background-playback extension with a blocker
Mozilla’s background-playback documentation points to the Video Background Play Fix extension as an example that intercepts visibility and fullscreen events. That add-on addresses the opposite problem: keeping media playing when a site pauses it. It is not a method for disabling background playback. Installing an add-on intended to preserve playback will not create a reliable “stop all background video” policy.
Check exceptions when the setting appears ineffective
Firefox can apply a per-site permission that overrides the general autoplay choice. If one website still starts media after you select Block audio and video, treat that site as a permission exception rather than assuming the global setting failed.
- Return to Menu > Settings > Privacy & security > Site settings > Autoplay.
- Open the area labeled Exceptions, if it is shown.
- Look for the affected domain and remove or change its special permission.
- Reload the site after changing the exception.
You can also inspect the current site’s controls from the page itself. A permission granted earlier for a news, social, streaming, or game site can continue to take precedence over the default until it is revoked.

Symptoms of an exception
- Most sites respect the block, but one domain still starts video.
- The problem returns only after visiting a site where you previously chose “Allow.”
- Changing the global choice has no visible effect until the tab is reloaded.
Diagnose playback that keeps running after minimization
If you started the video yourself and it continues after you leave Firefox, use this sequence. It separates a currently active stream from a future autoplay permission and from site-specific background support.
- Press pause in Open Tabs or in Android’s notification media card. This confirms whether the current media session can be stopped directly.
- Reopen Firefox and check whether the same tab resumes only after you tap play. If it does, the issue was an active stream rather than autoplay.
- Set Autoplay to Block audio and video, reload the page, and test without pressing play. This tests automatic starts separately.
- Repeat the test in a private tab. Private-tab media should pause when Firefox is minimized.
- Try a different website. If only one player continues or pauses, its visibility or fullscreen behavior is likely responsible.
This process cannot create a documented global background-off mode for regular tabs; it identifies which layer is controlling the behavior.

Some readers use “background video” to mean a floating or continuing player and may arrive here because media stops unexpectedly. That is the inverse of disabling playback. Mozilla recommends checking Android battery and data restrictions, trying another site, and reviewing picture-in-picture permission when a floating video window is the intended result.
Battery and data restrictions
Android may limit background activity or network access for Firefox. Manufacturer-specific settings can suspend the browser, stop background data, or restrict battery use. The menu names and paths differ across Android versions and phone makers, so look in the system settings for Firefox’s battery, background activity, and mobile-data permissions.
Picture-in-picture
Picture-in-picture is a separate Android capability. If the player is expected to become a floating window, check whether picture-in-picture is allowed for Firefox and whether that particular site supports it. Allowing picture-in-picture does not disable background video; it changes how supported video is displayed.

Older instructions you should not follow
An archived Mozilla Support forum question from 2015 used the wording “how do I disable autoplay video on Firefox on my phone?” Its accepted answer referred to Firefox 41 and the path Settings > Display > Allow autoplay. That interface is from an older release and should not be used as current guidance.
Current Firefox for Android places the control at Settings > Privacy & security > Site settings > Autoplay. If your labels differ, first check that Firefox is updated; Android manufacturers can also alter system-level media controls, but they do not change the documented Firefox menu path.
Practical decision guide
You hear a video right now
Use the Open Tabs pause button or Android’s notification pause control. These actions target the active media session and do not depend on an autoplay preference.

Set Autoplay to Block audio and video, reload the page, and remove any site exception that grants autoplay.
A video you started keeps playing after minimization
Firefox’s current help does not document a global regular-tab switch to prohibit this. Pause the stream manually, close the tab, or use a private tab when you need the documented minimize behavior.
Only one website behaves differently
Check that site’s exception and its own player controls. Visibility and fullscreen events can make two sites respond differently to the same Firefox setting.
Playback stops but you wanted a floating player
Check Android battery and data restrictions, try another site, and verify picture-in-picture permission. Those checks address continuation and display, not autoplay blocking.

- It can pause an active media session from Open Tabs or Android’s notification controls.
- It can block automatic audio and video starts through the Autoplay setting.
- It can apply different autoplay permissions to individual sites.
- It pauses media in private tabs when Firefox is minimized.
- It allows regular-tab playback to continue in the background when the site/player permits it.
- It does not document one global setting that turns off all regular-tab background playback.
Use the narrowest control that solves your problem: pause for an immediate stop, Autoplay for unsolicited starts, and site or tab management when a deliberately started stream continues in the background.
