WhatsApp’s official help guidance does not document a switch that turns off automatic video playback in Status updates. You may check your own app build for a newly added option, but there is no published WhatsApp menu path for an autoplay-off control in the guidance reviewed.
The setting many people find instead is Media auto-download. It controls whether video files download automatically; it does not control whether a Status video plays after you open it.
What the official guidance actually confirms
WhatsApp Status lets you share photos and videos that remain available for 24 hours. The official Status instructions explain how to view and create those updates, but they do not list an autoplay preference for Status videos.

That supports a careful conclusion: no Status-video autoplay-off control is documented in the current official articles reviewed. It does not prove that every phone, operating-system version or future WhatsApp build can never expose such a control. App interfaces and help pages can change, so a later release may use different labels.

WhatsApp’s Help Center also says that Status itself cannot be turned off or disabled. That is a separate feature limitation. It does not specifically answer whether a particular version can control video playback after a Status is opened.
First determine what is playing automatically
People often use “WhatsApp video autoplay” to describe several different behaviors. Identifying the surface matters because WhatsApp has documented different behavior for Status and for videos opened in chats.

If the clip is inside an individual or group conversation, follow the chat behavior rather than assuming it is a Status. If it appears in the Status tab or in a contact’s Status viewer, the official guidance reviewed offers no documented switch to block automatic playback.
Why “Media auto-download” is not an autoplay setting
WhatsApp provides a storage-and-data control for automatic media downloads. The commonly documented route is Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download; wording and the exact arrangement can vary by platform and app build.
Under that control, selecting Never prevents WhatsApp from automatically downloading videos. This can reduce background data use and the number of video files saved without an explicit download action. It does not tell WhatsApp to leave a Status video paused once you are viewing the Status.

The distinction is explicit in WhatsApp’s help wording: “However, once you tap the play button, the video will play and continue the download process in the background.” That statement concerns the download setting. It should not be read as a statement that Status videos require a tap before they play, nor as an autoplay-off method.
What changing auto-download can accomplish
- Reduce automatic video downloads over mobile data or Wi-Fi, depending on the media rules you choose.
- Reduce storage consumed by media that you never intentionally saved.
- Require an explicit interaction before an undownloaded video begins its download process.
What it cannot accomplish
- It cannot convert the Status viewer into a manual-play interface.
- It cannot guarantee that a Status video will remain paused after the Status is opened.
- It cannot disable the Status feature itself.
How to check your own WhatsApp build without assuming a menu exists
Because the official articles reviewed do not provide an autoplay path, do not follow guides that invent a specific “Status autoplay” switch. You can still verify whether your installed build has introduced one.
- Open WhatsApp and enter its Settings area.
- Look through sections whose names relate to Status, Chats, or media playback. The labels can differ between Android, iPhone and app releases.
- If you see a control explicitly referring to Status video autoplay or automatic playback, read its description carefully and test it with a non-sensitive Status.
- If no such control appears, treat that absence as consistent with the current official guidance: WhatsApp has not documented an autoplay-off setting in the help material reviewed.
- Record your phone platform and WhatsApp version if you need to ask support or report behavior. A platform-specific answer cannot be inferred from the general Status articles alone.
Do not confuse a control for animated previews, media downloads, notifications, or sound with a control over whether a Status video starts. The label must specifically describe playback of Status videos to answer this question.
What happens when you change auto-download to “Never”
Changing automatic downloads is reasonable when your goal is data or storage management. It is not a solution when your goal is to prevent the motion on screen as soon as a Status opens.
Example: reducing downloads
Suppose a contact posts a large Status video and you do not want WhatsApp to fetch it in advance. Setting video auto-download to “Never” addresses that download concern. If you later tap the play button, WhatsApp says the video plays and the download continues in the background.

Example: trying to stop playback
If your complaint is that a video begins as soon as you enter the Status viewer, changing auto-download may leave that behavior unchanged. The setting governs file transfer, not the viewer’s playback rule.

Several WhatsApp controls affect visibility, alerts or audience selection. None is documented as a Status playback control.
- Disabling Status: WhatsApp’s Help Center says Status itself cannot be turned off. That does not create an autoplay preference.
- Muting Status notifications: This changes alerts, not what happens after you open the Status viewer.
- Muting one contact’s Status: This changes where that contact’s updates are shown; it is not a playback setting for other Status videos.
- Restricting your Status audience: Audience privacy determines who can see updates you post. It does not control videos you view.
- Turning off WhatsApp notifications: Notifications concern incoming alerts. They do not document a way to pause videos once a Status is open.
- Using headphones or a headset: Audio accessories may change what you hear, but they do not stop the video from starting.
These options can be useful for privacy or notification management, but presenting them as autoplay fixes would conflate unrelated functions.
Status videos versus videos opened in a chat
WhatsApp’s July 27, 2023 announcement about video messages describes a chat-specific interaction: a video message plays automatically on mute when opened in a chat, and tapping the video starts its sound. That announcement does not establish how Status videos behave.
This distinction explains why a setting or tip that appears relevant to chat video messages may not affect Status. Before changing anything, note whether the video is:

- part of a video message opened in that conversation; or
- in the Status viewer, where contacts’ temporary updates are displayed.
Only the third case is the subject of this guide. The official Status guidance reviewed does not provide a corresponding autoplay-off preference.
A practical decision path
- Identify the surface. If it is in a chat, use chat-specific information. If it is in Status, continue.
- Define the unwanted behavior. Is the problem that a file downloads, that the image moves, that sound starts, or that the Status viewer opens at all? These are different functions.
- If downloads are the problem, open Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download and review the video rule. “Never” addresses automatic downloading, not playback.
- If playback is the problem, look for a control explicitly named for Status video playback in your installed build. The reviewed official guidance supplies no path to one.
- If no playback control exists, there is no documented WhatsApp setting you can apply based on the current official articles. Avoid treating notification, audience or mute controls as substitutes.
- If your app behaves differently from the documentation, note the platform, WhatsApp version and exact screen where playback begins, then consult the live WhatsApp Help Center or support channel. Help content and app behavior can change.
Data, storage and privacy considerations
Although auto-download does not solve autoplay, it can still be worth configuring independently. Automatic downloads may consume mobile data, Wi-Fi bandwidth and device storage. A “Never” rule can prevent videos from being fetched until you deliberately interact with them, while WhatsApp’s documented behavior still allows playback and background downloading after you tap play.
Privacy expectations also matter. A Status is designed to be viewed inside WhatsApp and disappears from view after 24 hours. Limiting your own Status audience controls who can see what you publish; it does not alter the playback behavior of updates posted by other people.

“If I stop downloads, videos cannot play.”
Not according to WhatsApp’s auto-download explanation. Tapping play starts the video and continues the download in the background.
“WhatsApp says Status cannot be disabled, so autoplay cannot be disabled.”
Those are different propositions. The Help Center statement concerns disabling Status as a feature. The narrower autoplay question remains: no autoplay-off preference is documented in the Status guidance reviewed.

“The chat video-message announcement proves Status videos autoplay.”
It does not. The announcement specifically describes video messages opened in a chat and should not be generalized to Status.
“A notification or mute option should pause Status videos.”
Those controls address alerts or visibility, not the playback rule in the Status viewer.
What to expect from future app updates
The conclusion here is tied to the official guidance currently reviewed, not a promise about every future release. WhatsApp can add, rename or move controls, and help pages can be revised. When checking after an update, search the app’s current Settings categories for wording that explicitly mentions Status video playback. If the only related option concerns media auto-download, it still addresses downloading rather than autoplay.

For a support request, include your operating system, WhatsApp version, whether the video was a Status or a chat message, and whether it began playing immediately on opening or only after tapping. Those details separate a playback report from a download or notification question.
Bottom line for WhatsApp Status autoplay
Based on WhatsApp’s official Status and auto-download guidance, there is no documented setting to turn off automatic video playback in Status updates. You may check your own current build in case its interface has changed, but do not mistake Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download for an autoplay switch. “Never” limits automatic downloading; it does not stop playback after you tap play. Chat video messages are a separate feature with separately documented behavior.
