There is no single switch that turns off every kind of photo processing on every phone. First identify what is changing: the camera may process a picture as it is captured, the preview may display alignment guides, or Photos/Gallery may suggest or apply edits after the shot. The right setting depends on the phone, app, and feature.
If you are asking “How do I turn off the AI editing on my phone?” or “Why does my phone change the photo after I take it?”, start by noting when you see the difference and which app is showing the image. Those details help distinguish a camera setting from a preview aid or an editing tool.
First identify when and where the change happens
“Automatic editing” can mean several different things. A camera can adjust a captured image; a preview can show leveling indicators without changing the saved photo; or a Photos or Gallery app can offer a crop, enhancement, or generative edit. These behaviors do not necessarily share a setting.
Recommended Free Tools
| What you notice | Likely feature type | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| The saved photo’s scene treatment or appearance differs from what you expected. | Camera capture processing or a camera-specific scene setting. | Camera settings; on iPhone 12 models, check Scene Detection. |
| Lines or arrows appear while composing a shot, but the saved image is not visibly changed. | A framing or leveling aid in the camera preview. | Camera settings; on Pixel, check Framing hints. |
| An edit is offered after you open an image, or the image changes after you choose an edit tool. | A Photos/Gallery suggestion or an editing feature. | The photo app’s edit screen and its settings. |
| The result has a wider crop, a changed composition, removed objects, or image areas that were not in the original. | A reframing or generative editing tool. | Look for Auto frame, Reframe, Photo Assist, or similar tools in the editing app. |
To narrow it down, take a test photo and compare the saved original in another viewer if available. Note whether the change is visible immediately in the camera preview, only after capture, or only after opening an edit or suggestion. Also record the phone model, operating-system version, and app displaying the result: menu names and feature availability vary.

A useful way to describe the problem is to separate four questions: when does it happen (during capture, in the preview, or while editing); where does it happen (Camera, Photos/Gallery, or a platform AI settings hub); what changes (appearance, guides, crop, generated fill, or objects); and how broad is the control you found (one feature, one app, or a wider group of tools)? A match across these details is more reliable than searching for a general “AI off” button.
If possible, keep an untouched copy of a test image before experimenting with edit controls. Compare that copy with the version shown in the app where you noticed the change. If the difference appears only after you tap an editing suggestion or tool, the issue is likely in the editing workflow rather than a camera behavior at capture. If guides appear only while composing, they may be visual aids rather than changes to the saved photo.
Turn off or avoid the feature on iPhone
Disable Scene Detection on iPhone 12 models
- Open Settings > Camera.
- Tap Scene Detection and turn it off.
Apple documents Scene Detection for iPhone 12 models. It recognizes the scene and applies a tailored look, and Apple says it is on by default. This control is not a universal off switch for iPhone image processing.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf you are trying to stop a camera from applying a scene-aware look, this is the Apple setting most directly related to that specific behavior in the documented instructions. If you do not see it, do not assume that a different camera option is a substitute: the instruction is scoped to iPhone 12 models. Check your exact model and installed iOS version before looking for an equivalent control.
Distinguish other camera controls
Apple documents separate settings for Lens Correction, which adjusts front-camera or Ultra Wide photos on supported models, and Prioritize Faster Shooting, which changes processing when you tap the shutter rapidly. These settings address different behavior from Scene Detection. If the specific setting you are looking for is not present, check your iPhone model and installed iOS version rather than assuming a similarly named control will do the same job.
These examples matter because “the photo looks different” can refer to more than one kind of adjustment. Scene Detection recognizes a scene and applies a tailored look; Lens Correction concerns supported front-camera or Ultra Wide photos; Prioritize Faster Shooting concerns processing when the shutter is tapped rapidly. They are separate controls with separate scopes. Turning off one should not be presented as disabling the others.
Do not confuse Photos editing tools with automatic capture
Apple’s Photos tools Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe are selected while editing; they are not the same as a camera setting that automatically changes every capture. To use Clean Up, the documented path is Photos > open a photo > Edit > Tools > Clean Up. Extend and Reframe are also selected from Tools. If one of these edits changed an image, use the available Undo or Reset option in the editing workflow to reverse it.

That distinction answers an important question: seeing an AI tool in Photos does not mean it automatically changed every picture taken by the camera. The Apple workflow places these tools inside photo editing. Reframe and Extend are choices made from Tools, while Clean Up is reached through the same editing route. If the problem began after choosing an edit, look for the edit’s Undo or Reset control rather than changing a camera setting that addresses a different stage.
Apple Intelligence eligibility depends on the iPhone model, iOS version, language, and region. The presence or exact name of a tool can therefore differ between devices; confirm eligibility and the installed software before following a menu path that is not visible.
Check Galaxy AI and Photo Assist on Samsung Galaxy
Find the AI controls
- Open Settings > Galaxy AI. On some devices the route is Settings > Advanced features > Galaxy AI, or the menu may have a similarly named Awesome Intelligence label.
- Inspect the available controls and the settings inside Camera or Gallery. Samsung notes that some AI switches are managed in individual app settings rather than only in the main AI menu.
- After changing AI settings, restart the phone, as Samsung’s support instructions advise.
Galaxy AI availability and menu paths vary by device and software version. A master control in the AI hub should not be treated as a promise that all conventional camera processing is disabled.
Work through the settings in layers. First inspect the Galaxy AI hub for the controls available on your device. Then open Camera or Gallery settings if the behavior belongs to one of those apps. A switch that appears in one place may control a particular AI feature, while an app-level option may govern a related behavior in that app. Samsung’s guidance explicitly allows for some controls to live inside individual apps, so checking only the top-level hub can miss a relevant setting.
Review Photo Assist and Gallery editing
For Samsung’s photo-editing features, check Settings > Galaxy AI > Photo Assist, then inspect the Photo Assist or Gallery options available on your model. Samsung lists Reframe, object removal, and rescaling in this editing family. If the change occurs only after opening an edit, look for the specific tool that was selected instead of assuming the camera altered the original capture.
Reframe, object removal, and rescaling are different kinds of edits, even though Samsung groups them within Photo Assist. If a composition changed, focus on Reframe; if something disappeared, look for object removal; and if the image dimensions or scale changed, inspect the rescaling tool. Matching the visible result to the named tool helps avoid disabling a broader collection of features when only one is involved.
Samsung describes image editing among cloud-based Galaxy AI functions and provides a Process data only on device control for cloud-processing preferences. That setting concerns where processing happens; it is not necessarily an editing-off switch. Look for a separate control for the specific feature if your goal is to prevent that edit.

In other words, processing location and feature availability are different questions. Choosing on-device processing is a preference about where processing occurs; it does not, by itself, mean Photo Assist or every edit has been turned off. Check the control’s description on your model and separately look for the setting that governs the feature you want to avoid.

Separate Pixel camera guides from Google Photos edits
Turn off Pixel Camera Framing hints
- Open the Camera app.
- Go to Settings > More settings > Framing hints.
- Turn Framing hints off.
Google describes Framing hints as horizon-leveling and up/down indicators. Turning them off removes those guides; it does not disable all camera image processing or editing in Google Photos.
If the lines or indicators are what prompted the question, this is the targeted control to try. It addresses what the camera shows as framing help. It is not a control for a crop applied later, a Google Photos suggestion, or the way an image is processed when captured. If the saved image itself has a different composition, investigate the photo and editing workflow separately.
Avoid or undo Google Photos Auto frame
In Google Photos on Android, Auto frame is an editing tool under Edit > Crop. It can recompose or extend a photo, using AI to fill image areas or expand the picture. To avoid that change, do not select Auto frame. If you have already used it, use the editing screen’s available undo or reset option, if offered, to return to an earlier state.
Google Photos may also present suggested edits such as Enhance, Dynamic, and AI Enhance. These are suggestions in the editing experience, not the Pixel Camera Framing hints setting. The documented steps refer to editing a photo in Google Photos, not to a global camera switch. Feature availability depends on device support, and results can vary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
So if your concern is a suggested look rather than a crop, identify the suggestion by name before changing settings. Enhance, Dynamic, and AI Enhance are examples Google Photos may present; their presence does not mean you have turned on the Pixel Camera’s leveling indicators. Conversely, turning off Framing hints will not remove suggestions inside Google Photos. The two features are in different apps and address different parts of the photo experience.
Why Auto frame can add content
Google Research describes the newer Auto frame method as interpreting an image as a 3D scene, adjusting a virtual camera perspective, and then using generative inpainting to complete areas that were not visible in the original. This explanation applies to the documented Google Photos Auto frame feature; it should not be generalized to every phone photo or every kind of camera processing. It also explains why an Auto frame result may contain generated image content rather than simply a conventional crop.

A conventional crop selects a smaller area already present in the image. The documented Auto frame approach can go further: it can change the virtual viewpoint and fill areas that were not visible in the original. That is why a result may look like a wider or recomposed image and may include generated material. If preserving only the pixels from the original capture is important, avoid choosing Auto frame and compare against an unedited copy.
Compare the controls before switching anything off
| Control or feature | When it acts | What it changes | Scope of control |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Scene Detection | Camera capture behavior | Recognizes a scene and applies a tailored look | A specific documented setting for iPhone 12 models |
| iPhone Lens Correction | Camera/photo processing | Adjusts front-camera or Ultra Wide photos on supported models | Separate setting; not Scene Detection |
| iPhone Prioritize Faster Shooting | When shutter is tapped rapidly | Changes processing in that situation | Separate setting; not an all-processing switch |
| Pixel Camera Framing hints | Camera preview | Displays horizon-leveling and up/down indicators | Turns off the guides, not all processing |
| Google Photos Auto frame | Post-capture editing | Recomposes or extends a photo and may fill image areas | A selected editing tool under Edit > Crop |
| Samsung Photo Assist | Post-capture editing | Includes tools such as Reframe, object removal, and rescaling | Feature and app controls vary by model and software |
This comparison is useful when one phone seems to offer several “AI” controls. A framing aid is not the same as reframing an image; an appearance treatment is not the same as object removal; and a preference about cloud processing is not automatically a command to stop an edit. Follow the row that matches both the symptom and the app rather than switching controls at random.

- Check the app first. Confirm whether you are viewing the image in Camera, Photos, Gallery, or another app. A setting in one app may not affect another.
- Match the feature to the symptom. A preview guide, a scene treatment, a suggested edit, and a generative reframe are different controls. A setting that removes guides will not necessarily change the saved image.
- Verify model and software eligibility. Apple’s Scene Detection instruction is scoped to iPhone 12 models; Apple Intelligence tools depend on model, iOS version, language, and region; Samsung says Galaxy AI availability varies by device and software version. Menu labels can also change with updates.
- Look in both the platform hub and the app. Samsung says some AI controls live in Camera or Gallery settings, not just Galaxy AI. On other platforms, check the specific editing app if the behavior happens only there.
- Restart after a Samsung AI setting change. Samsung’s support instructions recommend restarting after changing AI settings.
- Ask with the exact details if the path differs. Include the phone model, operating-system version, and the name of the app where you see the change. Without those details, an exact menu path may not be reliable.
If turning off a setting appears to have no effect, repeat the test in the same app and at the same stage of the workflow. For example, compare the camera preview with the saved image, then open that image in the app where the altered version appeared. This helps determine whether the setting affected the preview, the captured photo, or only an edit view. Check whether you selected a tool or suggestion in Photos or Gallery, since a selected edit is a different case from a camera control.
Do not assume a setting is missing because your phone lacks all photo controls. It may be unavailable on that model, have a different menu path, depend on software eligibility, or live in an individual app rather than the main settings hub. Apple’s cited camera setting is specific to iPhone 12 models, Apple Intelligence tools depend on model, iOS version, language, and region, and Samsung documents device and software variation. Google Photos editing features can also depend on device support.
The official instructions covered here do not establish exact menu paths for every Android manufacturer, third-party gallery, or software build. If your device is not an iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, or Pixel using Google Photos, use the phone maker’s support information for your model and the app’s own help or settings. Avoid treating a path written for one brand or app as universal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What turning a setting off does—and does not—mean
Feature-specific controls have limited scope. Turning off Pixel Framing hints removes leveling indicators, not every Pixel or Google Photos adjustment. Disabling iPhone Scene Detection addresses that documented iPhone 12 camera behavior, not Clean Up, Extend, Reframe, Lens Correction, or every other form of processing. Galaxy AI or Photo Assist options apply according to the feature and device, while a cloud-processing preference controls processing location rather than necessarily stopping an edit.
Likewise, avoiding a user-selected edit is different from disabling capture processing. Apple’s Photos Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe are editing tools selected from the Photos workflow. Google Photos Auto frame is found under Edit > Crop. Samsung Photo Assist includes editing functions such as Reframe and object removal. If you want the original composition, avoid applying the relevant editing tool and retain an unedited version when possible.

The practical answer is to disable or avoid the named feature that matches the change you see. The reviewed Apple, Samsung, and Google instructions describe app- and feature-specific controls, not one cross-platform switch that turns off all automatic photo processing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off AI editing on my phone?
There is no single universal switch. Identify whether the change happens during capture, appears as a camera preview guide, or occurs after you open a photo-editing app. Then check the feature-specific control for that phone and app: for example, iPhone 12 Scene Detection, Samsung Galaxy AI or Photo Assist, or Google Photos Auto frame.
Why does my phone change a photo after I take it?
It may be camera processing, a scene-specific setting, or an edit or suggestion displayed in Photos or Gallery. Compare the saved image with the camera preview and note whether the difference appears only after opening an editing tool. The app and exact phone model help identify which control applies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How do I stop my phone from reframing photos?
First identify the app and feature. Google Photos Auto frame is an editing tool under Edit > Crop; Samsung’s Photo Assist includes Reframe; Apple Photos also offers Reframe as a selected editing tool. Avoid selecting the tool, or use the available Undo or Reset workflow where applicable if you have already applied an edit.
Does turning off Pixel Framing hints stop photo processing?
No. Google describes Framing hints as horizon-leveling and up/down indicators in the camera preview. Turning them off removes those guides, but it does not disable all image processing or Google Photos editing.
Can I turn off all photo AI on iPhone?
The documented controls are feature-specific, not a universal off switch. Scene Detection is documented for iPhone 12 models. Apple’s Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe are selected in Photos editing, while Lens Correction and Prioritize Faster Shooting address separate camera behaviors. Tool availability can depend on model, iOS version, language, and region.
Does Samsung’s Process data only on device setting disable Photo Assist?
It is a cloud-processing preference about where processing happens, not necessarily an editing-off switch. Check Photo Assist or Gallery settings for a control for the particular feature you want to avoid.
What details should I provide if a setting is missing?
Provide the exact phone model, operating-system version, and app where the change appears. Menu names and feature availability vary by device and software; Apple Intelligence tools also depend on language and region.
The Bottom Line
Pinpoint the stage and app before looking for an off switch. Camera processing, preview guides, and editing tools such as Auto frame or Reframe are different features with different controls. Use the setting that matches the specific change—and do not assume it disables every other kind of photo adjustment.
