To stop automatic capitalization, disable the setting on the keyboard that is actually typing your text. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Keyboard and turn off Auto-Capitalization. On Android, the route depends on the active keyboard: Gboard uses Text correction > Auto-capitalization, while Samsung Keyboard uses More typing options > Auto capitalize.
This changes capitalization only. You can leave autocorrect, spelling suggestions, predictive text, auto-spacing, and auto-punctuation enabled unless you switch those controls off separately.
Quick paths by phone and keyboard
Use the row that matches the keyboard shown when you type. Android does not have one universal keyboard-settings menu, and a Galaxy phone can use Gboard instead of Samsung Keyboard.

Turn off automatic capitalization on an iPhone
Standard iPhone keyboard
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Keyboard.
- Find Auto-Capitalization and switch it off.
With the switch off, the iPhone keyboard stops automatically changing the first letter of a sentence and normally stops applying its automatic capitalization behavior to proper nouns. Apple describes the enabled feature as one that capitalizes proper nouns and the first words in sentences when an app supports the feature.

Test the change in Notes or another ordinary text field. Start a new sentence after a period and type a few letters. The first letter should remain lowercase unless you capitalize it yourself or the app applies a separate rule.
iPhone with a connected Magic Keyboard
If you type on a connected Magic Keyboard or another physical keyboard, check the hardware-specific controls instead of assuming the on-screen switch governs every input method.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Keyboard.
- Tap Hardware Keyboard.
- Change the capitalization option displayed for the physical keyboard.
The on-screen keyboard and hardware keyboard can expose separate settings. If capitalization changes only when the physical keyboard is connected, adjust the control under Hardware Keyboard.

Why Android instructions differ
Android’s Settings app is supplied by the phone manufacturer, while the keyboard may be supplied by Google, Samsung, Microsoft, or another developer. The keyboard that is active owns the capitalization switch. Consequently, a Galaxy phone using Gboard follows Gboard’s route, not Samsung Keyboard’s route. Labels and screen layouts can also change with the phone model, Android version, keyboard version, and country.

Before changing anything, tap a text field so the keyboard appears and identify it. The keyboard’s name may appear in a toolbar, in a keyboard-switcher button, or in the system input-method picker. If you cannot identify it, use the Settings search box for keyboard, on-screen keyboard, or the name of a keyboard app you recognize.
Gboard
- Open any app with a text field, such as Messages, Notes, or a browser search box.
- When Gboard appears, tap its gear icon. If the toolbar is collapsed, tap the toolbar menu first and then the gear.
- Tap Text correction.
- Turn off Auto-capitalization.
You can also reach the active on-screen keyboard from Android Settings and open Gboard’s settings there. The exact Android Settings path varies by manufacturer, so the gear inside Gboard is usually the quickest route.
After changing the switch, place the cursor in a new sentence and type a lowercase letter. If the letter still changes to uppercase, verify that the text field is using Gboard and not a different installed keyboard.

Samsung Keyboard on a Galaxy phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management.
- Tap Samsung Keyboard or Samsung Keyboard settings. Samsung uses both labels on different software versions.
- Tap More typing options.
- Turn off Auto capitalize.
Samsung defines this feature as automatically capitalizing the first letter of each sentence. The instructions apply to the default Samsung Keyboard. Samsung’s support documentation notes that screens and available settings can vary by device and country, and some options may not be present on older devices or older operating systems.

If your Galaxy shows Gboard when you type, do not look for the switch in Samsung Keyboard settings. Follow the Gboard instructions instead, or change the default keyboard first if you deliberately want to use Samsung Keyboard.
Another Android keyboard
Keyboards such as SwiftKey and other third-party options keep their own preferences. Open the keyboard while a text field is active, tap its settings button, and look under a category named Typing, Typing settings, Text correction, or Advanced. The control may be called Auto-capitalization, Auto capitalize, or a closely related phrase.
If the keyboard has no visible settings button, open Android Settings and search for the keyboard’s name. Select the installed keyboard, then look for its preferences. Avoid changing the system language or replacing the keyboard merely to alter capitalization; the active keyboard’s own setting is the targeted fix.
Disable capitalization without disabling autocorrect
Automatic capitalization is one of several independent typing features. Turning it off does not inherently turn off:

- Autocorrect: automatic spelling or word corrections.
- Predictive text or suggestions: proposed next words and completions.
- Auto-replace: substitutions defined by the keyboard or your text-replacement list.
- Auto-spacing: insertion of spaces between words.
- Auto-punctuation: punctuation inserted after certain gestures or pauses.
On iPhone, leave Auto-Correction and Predictive enabled if you want spelling help and suggestions while preventing automatic initial capitals. On Samsung Keyboard, the corresponding controls appear separately from Auto capitalize under the keyboard’s typing settings. Gboard likewise places capitalization under Text correction alongside other correction controls.
This selective approach is useful when you write code, usernames, file paths, product identifiers, hashtags, or messages in which sentence-style capitalization is undesirable but spelling suggestions are still helpful.

The wrong keyboard is active
The most common cause is changing one keyboard’s preference while another keyboard is supplying the text. On Android, open a text field and check the keyboard name or input-method switcher. A Galaxy phone can alternate between Samsung Keyboard and Gboard. Reopen the settings for the keyboard currently visible and change its capitalization control.

The app applies its own text behavior
Apple qualifies its description by saying that capitalization occurs in an app supporting the feature. A particular app can configure its text field differently, force uppercase display, or apply formatting after text is entered. Compare the behavior in a basic app such as Notes. If lowercase typing works there but not in one specialized app, the app—not the keyboard’s global setting—is controlling that field.

The label is different
Look for equivalent wording rather than one exact spelling. iPhone uses Auto-Capitalization; Gboard uses Auto-capitalization; Samsung uses Auto capitalize. Capitalization and capitalization-related controls may be grouped under Text correction, Typing, or More typing options.
The switch is missing
- Open the phone’s Settings search.
- Search for keyboard, then open the settings for the keyboard identified as current or default.
- Search inside that keyboard’s preferences for capitalize, capitalization, or typing.
- If the option still does not appear, check whether the phone is using an older operating system or keyboard version. Samsung notes that some settings are unavailable on older devices and software.
Do not assume that a missing switch means the feature cannot be changed. It may be located in the keyboard app rather than the main Android Settings page, or the keyboard may not expose an independent capitalization control.
Capital letters still appear after a reset or update
Updates can restore default keyboard preferences, change menu names, or switch the default input method. Repeat the active-keyboard check, then apply the relevant path again. If you use multiple languages, verify the setting for the keyboard layout currently selected; some keyboards maintain language-specific behavior.
Only one field is forced to uppercase
Some forms intentionally request uppercase values for items such as codes or registration fields. A field that displays every character in uppercase may be styled by the website or app even when the keyboard’s automatic-capitalization setting is off. Test another ordinary text field before changing additional keyboard settings.
How to turn capitalization back on
Use the same path and reverse the final switch:
- iPhone: Settings > General > Keyboard > Auto-Capitalization on.
- Gboard: Gboard settings > Text correction > Auto-capitalization on.
- Samsung Keyboard: Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard or Samsung Keyboard settings > More typing options > Auto capitalize on.
For a physical iPhone keyboard, use Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard and enable the applicable capitalization option there.

What to expect after switching it off
The keyboard will generally leave the first letter of a sentence in the case you type. You remain responsible for adding capitals to names, sentence starts, titles, and abbreviations. Existing text is not automatically converted back to lowercase; the preference affects future typing behavior.
Because capitalization is handled by the active keyboard and, in some cases, by the app’s text field, behavior can differ between messaging, browsers, document editors, login forms, and specialized apps. A successful test in a plain text field confirms the keyboard setting, while a different result in one app points to that app’s formatting rules.
