To disable audio enhancements, change the setting for the specific speaker, headphone, or microphone that is causing the problem. In Windows 11, use Settings > System > Sound and switch Audio enhancements to Off. In Windows 10, open the classic Sound Control Panel, select the device, and choose Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects. Microphones can expose the control on an Enhancements or Advanced tab, depending on the driver.

Play or record the same material again immediately after changing the setting. If the distortion, crackling, low volume, missing sound, or microphone failure remains, continue with device selection, volume, audio-format, and driver checks rather than repeatedly toggling enhancements.

Before you turn enhancements off

Audio enhancements are processing applied by Windows or the device driver. They can include effects such as equalization, loudness processing, room correction, noise reduction, or other vendor-specific filters. Microsoft notes that having enhancements enabled can sometimes result in audio issues, but disabling them is a diagnostic step, not a universal repair.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA) | USB audio adapter; no drivers needed; for Windows & Mac; 3.5mm headphone & mic jacks; usb to 3.5mm jack audio adapter
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
  • Identify the device you hear. A monitor with built-in speakers, a USB headset, Bluetooth headphones, a docking station, and a laptop’s internal speakers appear as separate outputs.
  • Identify the device that records. A laptop microphone, webcam microphone, headset microphone, and USB microphone are separate inputs.
  • Keep the test repeatable. Note the application, song, video, call, or microphone test that exposes the fault so you can compare before and after.
  • Check mute and volume first. An enhancement setting cannot restore a muted device or a volume level set to zero.

Changing the setting for one device does not disable processing on every device in Windows. If you switch from speakers to a headset later, inspect the headset’s own properties as well.

Windows 11: disable enhancements for speakers or headphones

  1. Open Start, then select Settings.
  2. Choose System, followed by Sound.
  3. Under Output, select the speaker or headphone device that is producing the sound you hear. If more than one output is listed, do not select a device merely because it is the default; select the one physically in use.
  4. On that device’s page, expand or locate Advanced settings.
  5. Set Audio enhancements to Off.
  6. Play the same audio again at the same approximate volume and note whether the symptom changed.

Windows may present the control as a drop-down rather than a large switch. If the option is absent, the driver may not expose enhancement processing through this page; use the device’s additional properties when available.

If Windows 11 lists several similar outputs

Names such as “Speakers,” “Headphones,” “Digital Audio,” or a monitor model can be confusing. Disconnecting unused USB or Bluetooth devices temporarily, or changing the output from the taskbar sound selector and then returning to Settings, can help you match the listed device to the jack or hardware you are using. Make the change on each output that you use, because the setting is device-specific.

Windows 10: disable all enhancements in the Sound Control Panel

  1. Open Control Panel. You can search for it from the taskbar.
  2. Select Hardware and Sound, then Sound.
  3. Open the Playback tab.
  4. Select the speaker or headphone device in use and choose Properties.
  5. Open the Enhancements tab.
  6. Select Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects, whichever wording your driver provides.
  7. Select OK, play the same audio again, and compare the result.

The checkbox may be missing, or the Enhancements tab may not exist, when the installed driver does not provide those controls. That absence does not prove that processing is active or inactive; it means this interface cannot expose a switch for that device.

Apply the change to another Windows 10 output

The Playback tab can contain separate entries for internal speakers, a monitor, a dock, and wired or wireless headphones. Select each device you use and repeat the properties change. If you set one device’s enhancements off and then Windows routes audio to another device, the original change will not affect the new output.

Disable enhancements for a microphone or other input

Microphone processing is separate from speaker processing. A microphone can have noise suppression, automatic gain, or other effects enabled even when your headphones have enhancements turned off.

  3. Open Device Properties, then select Additional device properties.
  4. Inspect the tabs in the dialog. Your driver may place the control on Enhancements or on Advanced.
  5. On Enhancements, choose Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects.
  6. On Advanced, clear Enable audio enhancements if that option is shown.
  7. Apply the change, close the dialogs, and run the microphone test again.

Microsoft states that the location depends on the manufacturer. Do not assume every microphone has the same tab, checkbox, or wording. If you use more than one microphone, repeat the procedure for each input device that an application may select.

When microphone testing shows no signal

First confirm that the microphone selected in Windows is the one connected to your headset, webcam, or USB device. Then check its input volume and whether a physical mute switch is enabled. If the meter remains inactive after enhancements are disabled, the cause may be device selection, permissions, a connection problem, or a driver issue rather than an audio effect.

Test the change correctly

Use the same source and route that exposed the fault. For playback, replay the section that crackled, sounded muffled, or went silent. For an input, speak at a normal level while watching the input meter or recording a short sample in the application that failed.

  • Improved immediately: leave enhancements off for that device and check whether the application retains its output or input selection.
  • Sound changed but did not improve: the effect may have been contributing to the character of the sound, but another problem remains. Continue with the format and driver checks below.
  • No change: verify that you changed the active device, then move to the broader troubleshooting steps.
  • Sound became quieter or less balanced: some devices use enhancement processing for their intended tuning. You can turn it back on if the unprocessed signal is worse, then investigate other causes.

Microsoft’s guidance is explicit that if turning off enhancements does not help, you should continue with additional troubleshooting.

If disabling enhancements does not fix distorted or crackling audio

1. Confirm output selection and volume

  • Open the Windows sound controls and confirm the output is the speakers or headphones you are actually wearing or listening to.
  • Make sure the device is not muted and that its volume is high enough for a meaningful test.
  • Check the application’s own volume and mute controls; an application can suppress sound even when Windows volume is correct.
  • If a monitor, dock, or Bluetooth device is connected, temporarily select the intended local output to rule out routing confusion.

2. Try another default audio format

For continuing distortion or crackling, open the selected device’s properties and look for the Advanced tab and the Default format control. Test another available format, apply it, and replay the same material. The exact choices depend on the driver and hardware, so do not assume a particular sample rate or bit depth is correct for every device. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which change affected the symptom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check the audio driver

An outdated, damaged, or incompatible driver can cause faults that resemble enhancement problems. Check for an available driver update through the normal Windows device-management tools or the computer, motherboard, headset, or audio-device manufacturer’s support channel. If the issue continues, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance advises reinstalling the latest driver supplied by the device manufacturer.

Use the driver intended for your exact Windows edition and hardware model. Installing a package for a different device can remove features or create new failures. Restart Windows after a driver installation or reinstallation, then retest the same device.

4. Isolate hardware and connection problems

  • Reconnect a wired plug firmly and try another jack if one is available.
  • For USB audio, try a different USB port and avoid an unpowered hub during testing.
  • For Bluetooth audio, verify that the device is connected as an audio output rather than merely paired.
  • Test the same headphones or microphone on another computer or test a known-good device on this computer. This separates a Windows configuration fault from a hardware or cable fault.

If there is no sound at all

Disabling enhancements is only one possible step when speakers or headphones are silent. Confirm the correct playback device and default-device selection first, then check mute and volume. If the device appears but produces no sound, inspect its connection and driver. If it does not appear, Windows may not be detecting the hardware, so an enhancement checkbox cannot solve the underlying detection problem.

Why the control differs between computers

Windows supplies the Settings and Control Panel shells, but the audio driver determines many device-specific pages. Consequently:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows 11 may show an Audio enhancements switch directly on the device page, while another driver exposes only additional properties.
  • Windows 10 may say Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects.
  • A microphone may put its control under Enhancements or Advanced.
  • Some modern USB, Bluetooth, HDMI, and vendor-managed devices handle processing outside the classic Windows checkbox.

These differences are normal. Use the closest available control for the selected device and record which device and driver you changed when troubleshooting multiple endpoints.

What turning enhancements off does—and does not do

The switch changes processing for the selected endpoint; it is not a global Windows audio reset. Turning it off does not raise a muted volume, select a missing device, repair a damaged cable, or install a driver. It also does not automatically change the enhancement state of a second headset, monitor, dock, or microphone. If the symptom follows you to another endpoint, repeat the procedure there before drawing a conclusion.

The change is reversible. You can return to the same device page and select On, or clear the disable checkbox, if the unprocessed sound is less suitable. Comparing both states with the same test clip or microphone recording is more useful than judging from memory.

Windows 11 versus Windows 10: practical differences

Comparison Windows 11 Windows 10
Main interface Settings app under System > Sound Classic Sound Control Panel
Playback label Audio enhancements: Off Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects
Microphone location Input device properties, then Additional device properties Recording or microphone properties, with tabs supplied by the driver
Device scope One selected output or input at a time One selected Playback or Recording device at a time
Availability Depends on the audio driver and hardware Depends on the audio driver and hardware

There is no purchase requirement for this procedure: the controls are built into Windows when the driver exposes them. Buying a new headset, speaker, adapter, or repair part is not a prerequisite for testing whether enhancements contribute to the fault.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing the wrong endpoint: turning off enhancements for laptop speakers will not affect a USB headset selected later.
  • Testing a different source: use the same song, video, call, or microphone test so the comparison is meaningful.
  • Assuming a missing checkbox means failure: the manufacturer may manage processing elsewhere or may not expose a Windows control.
  • Ignoring volume and mute: an enhancement switch cannot produce a signal from a muted device.
  • Changing several settings at once: alter one item, test, and note the result before changing the format or driver.
  • Confusing support status with settings availability: Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but an installed Windows 10 system can still display and change the setting.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. The Windows 10 Control Panel procedure can still be used when the operating system and driver expose the setting, but support status is separate from whether the checkbox exists on your computer. Keep that distinction in mind when deciding whether a persistent driver or compatibility problem should be addressed by moving to a supported Windows release.

A compact troubleshooting checklist

  1. Select the exact output or input device in active use.
  2. Check mute, volume, application volume, and physical connections.
  3. Turn off audio enhancements for that device using the Windows 11 Settings path or Windows 10 Sound Control Panel path.
  4. Replay or rerecord the same test material.
  5. If the symptom remains, try a different default audio format for playback.
  6. Check for, or reinstall, the latest driver from the device manufacturer.
  7. Test another port or known-good device to separate configuration from hardware failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off audio enhancements in Windows 11?

Open Settings > System > Sound, select the output device under Output, open Advanced settings, and set Audio enhancements to Off. Replay the same audio immediately. The control is specific to the device you selected.

How do I disable all enhancements in Windows 10?

Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound. On the Playback tab, select the speaker or headphone device, choose Properties, open Enhancements, and select Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects. Select OK and test the same audio.

Why is there no signal when I test my microphone?

First select the microphone that is actually connected, then check its input volume and any physical mute switch. Open Settings > System > Sound > the microphone > Device Properties > Additional device properties. Depending on the manufacturer, disable enhancements on the Enhancements tab or clear Enable audio enhancements on the Advanced tab, then test again. If the meter is still inactive, investigate device selection, connection, permissions, or the driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I cannot find the Enhancements tab or checkbox?

The driver may not expose that control, or it may place it on a different page. Windows 11 can show Audio enhancements on the device page, while microphone controls may appear under Enhancements or Advanced. A missing checkbox does not by itself identify whether processing is active.

Can disabling enhancements fix crackling or distorted sound?

It can resolve problems caused by enhancement processing, but it is not guaranteed. If the symptom remains, confirm the output device and volume, try another Default format, and update or reinstall the latest driver from the device manufacturer.

Should I turn enhancements back on if the sound gets worse?

You can. The change is reversible, and some devices rely on processing for their intended tuning. Compare On and Off with the same test material, then continue troubleshooting if neither state removes the fault.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy new audio hardware to try this fix?

No. Disabling enhancements uses built-in Windows controls when the driver provides them. Hardware replacement is not required to perform the test.

The Bottom Line

Turn off enhancements only on the device that is producing or recording the faulty audio, then repeat the same test. Windows 11 uses Settings; Windows 10 uses the Sound Control Panel, and microphone controls vary by driver. If the symptom remains, check the selected device, mute and volume state, default audio format, connections, and manufacturer driver rather than assuming enhancements are the sole cause.
