On a computer, open Google Chat settings and find the Accessibility or Animation controls. Set the animation option to Off. Google’s accessibility documentation identifies the control as “Animation on/off/use system settings,” but the current help page does not publish a complete click-by-click path to it.
On a phone or tablet, Google Chat’s behavior appears to follow the device’s accessibility animation setting rather than a clearly documented in-app switch. Check your device’s motion or animation controls if animated emoji continue to play. That mobile guidance comes from a Google Chat Community Product Expert and should be treated as reported behavior, not as a guaranteed menu path for every device.
What the Google Chat setting controls
Google Chat includes accessibility options that can reduce or stop interface motion. Google’s Chat accessibility documentation lists an animation choice with three states: on, off, and use system settings. Choosing Off is the direct way to suppress Chat’s animated emoji and other Chat animations on a supported desktop interface.

Google’s official page confirms that the control exists, but it does not state the exact sequence of buttons, menu names, or its precise scope in every Chat surface. The safest desktop instruction is therefore to open Chat settings and look for the Accessibility or Animation section rather than follow a supposedly universal route that may not match your account or current interface.
Turn off animated emoji on Google Chat desktop
1. Open the Chat settings
- Open Google Chat in a desktop browser, or open the standalone Google Chat app if you use one.
- Open the product’s Settings area.
- Within settings, look for a section named Accessibility, or for an option that contains Animation. Google’s documentation does not publish a single confirmed navigation path, so the location can vary with the current Chat interface.
2. Choose the animation state
- Find the control whose wording corresponds to Animation on/off/use system settings.
- Select Off.
- If the control offers only a system-dependent choice and you want Chat to stop moving, leave Chat on use system settings and turn animations off in the operating system instead. Selecting On allows supported Chat animations to play.
3. Confirm that the change took effect
Return to a conversation in which animated emoji had been appearing and watch for a new message or reaction. The expected result is that the emoji remains available but its animated presentation no longer plays. If a message was already on screen, reload the conversation or reopen Chat before judging the result; a previously rendered animation may not change until the interface refreshes.
If you cannot find an Accessibility or Animation entry, do not assume that your account lacks the feature. The official help page confirms the setting but does not document its exact location. Check the main Chat settings rather than the emoji picker, notification settings, or an individual conversation’s menu.

Turn off animation when you use Chat on a phone or tablet
Mobile instructions require more caution. A Google Chat Community Product Expert, PeggyK, wrote on November 13, 2025: “All animations in Google Chat can be turned off in the desktop Accessibility settings.” The same community response says that on mobile, Chat appears to use the device’s Accessibility settings. That is useful guidance, but it is secondary to Google’s official documentation and is not a promise that every Android or iOS release exposes identical controls.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Use the Settings search field for terms such as animation, motion, or accessibility.
- Review the motion or animation controls and enable the option that reduces or disables animation.
- Close and reopen Google Chat, then test a conversation containing an animated emoji.
Google’s iPhone and iPad accessibility help mentions a Toggle animation feature among the options users can explore, but the documented page does not provide device-specific, step-by-step directions. Apple’s labels can also differ by operating-system version, so use the wording shown on your device rather than looking for an exact Google Chat switch inside the app.
Android phone or tablet
- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Search Settings for animation, remove animations, motion, or accessibility. Manufacturer software can place these controls in different sections.
- Turn on the device option that reduces or removes animations, if one is available.
- Reopen Google Chat and test a new animated emoji.
There is no single Android menu path that can be guaranteed across manufacturers, Android versions, or accessibility skins. If your phone has no animation control, update Google Chat and the operating system, then check the app’s own settings again. The available evidence supports treating mobile Chat as device-dependent rather than promising an in-app toggle.

Desktop, mobile, and Gmail: what is established
| Where you open Chat | What the available documentation supports | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop browser or standalone Chat app | Google documents an accessibility animation control with on, off, and use system settings states. | The official help page does not specify one exact click sequence or confirm every current label. |
| Chat on iPhone or iPad | A Google Chat Product Expert reports that mobile Chat appears to use device accessibility settings. Google’s iOS help mentions a “Toggle animation” accessibility feature. | The supplied official page does not give device-specific steps or guarantee that every iOS version behaves identically. |
| Chat on Android | The same community guidance points to device accessibility settings for mobile Chat. | Menu names and availability vary by Android device and version; a universal path is not established. |
| Chat inside Gmail | Google states that its appearance settings apply to chat.google.com and the standalone app, not Chat in Gmail. | That scope statement concerns appearance settings. It does not prove whether the animation preference behaves identically inside Gmail. |
Use the table as a boundary on what can be promised. If you turn animation off in standalone Chat and still see movement in Gmail, check Gmail’s Chat settings and the browser or operating-system animation preference separately. Do not infer that an appearance-setting rule automatically applies to the animation control.

If animated emoji still appear after you switch animation off
Check that you changed the Chat preference, not a different product
Google Messages has its own option called Show expressive animations. Google Messages and Google Chat are separate products. Changing that Messages option does not answer the Google Chat question, and changing Google Chat’s accessibility animation setting does not document a change to Messages.
Refresh the interface
Close and reopen the Chat tab or standalone app after changing the setting. If you use Chat in a browser, a full page refresh can cause the new preference to be read again. Test with a newly received or newly sent emoji rather than judging an effect that was already rendered before the change.

Inspect the system setting when Chat is set to use system settings
The use system settings state delegates the decision to the operating system. If Chat is still animated in that state, switch the Chat control explicitly to Off, or locate the device’s accessibility animation option and disable motion there. A system setting can also be overridden by an operating-system update or a device profile.
Check the surface you are using
Chat can be opened at chat.google.com, in the standalone app, or in Gmail. Because Google documents different scope for appearance settings and does not specify the animation preference’s scope, test the exact surface where you notice the animation. A setting changed in one place should not be assumed to have been applied everywhere.

Look for account or interface differences
Google can present settings gradually or change labels as Chat is updated. If one account shows an Accessibility section and another does not, compare the standalone Chat experience with Chat in Gmail, confirm that you are editing the intended account, and look again after updating the app or reloading the browser. Avoid relying on an old screenshot that shows controls absent from the current interface.

What turning animation off does not change
- Emoji sending: You can still open the emoji picker and send ordinary emoji.
- Message content: The preference does not delete, replace, or rewrite emoji that other people send.
- All visual effects everywhere: The setting is for Chat’s supported animation behavior. It is not a documented global switch for every animated image, video, GIF, sticker, or browser effect displayed in a conversation.
- Other Google products: Google Messages has separate expressive-animation controls, and those settings are not interchangeable with Google Chat.
- Every Chat surface: Google has not documented that the animation preference has identical behavior in chat.google.com, the standalone app, and Chat in Gmail.
When to use “Off” versus “Use system settings”
Choose Off for a Chat-only change
Use Off when you want Google Chat to stop animating regardless of the computer’s general motion preference. This is the clearest choice when Chat is the only application whose animation bothers you or when you need a deterministic Chat setting for troubleshooting.
Choose Use system settings for a device-wide policy
Use use system settings when you want Chat to follow the accessibility policy already configured on the computer or mobile device. This is useful if you have intentionally disabled motion across the operating system and want apps to respect that choice. If the device allows animation, Chat may continue to animate in this mode.
Choose On only when motion is acceptable
The On state allows supported Chat animation. It is the opposite of the setting needed to suppress animated emoji and should not be selected while testing whether the control works.
Accessibility reasons to disable animated emoji
People turn off Chat animation for different reasons: motion sensitivity, distraction, battery or performance concerns, or a preference for a static interface. You do not need to change notification settings or remove emoji to address those concerns. The accessibility animation control is the relevant first setting to try.
If motion causes significant discomfort, apply the device’s broader accessibility options as well and consult the platform’s own documentation for the exact controls on your model. Google’s Chat documentation establishes the Chat-level animation choice; it does not claim that this one preference handles every type of motion in every product.
Quick Recap
A concise checklist
- On desktop, open Google Chat Settings.
- Look for Accessibility or Animation.
- Set the documented animation choice to Off, or choose use system settings if the operating system already disables animation.
- Refresh Chat and test a newly displayed animated emoji.
- On mobile, check the device’s accessibility motion or animation controls; treat this as device-dependent guidance.
- If the effect remains, confirm that you are testing Google Chat rather than Google Messages and that you changed the same Chat surface where the animation appears.
