The VPN key icon means Android currently reports an active VPN connection. To remove the icon, disconnect that VPN. Open Settings > Network and internet > VPN, open the controls beside the connected VPN, and turn it off. If you also want to erase its saved setup, choose Forget instead. Those are different actions: turning a VPN off preserves its configuration, while Forget removes the saved VPN entry.
If the connection returns by itself, disable Always-on VPN for that VPN when the option is available. On supported Pixel phones, VPN by Google has a separate Pause VPN command that is temporary and can resume after the phone joins another network.
What the Android VPN key icon means
Android’s status bar uses a key-shaped VPN icon to indicate an active connection. Android Developers describes it as the VPN (key) icon that shows an active connection. The icon does not merely mean that a VPN app is installed or that a VPN profile is saved; it indicates that Android considers a VPN tunnel active at that moment.

Removing the icon therefore means stopping the active connection. You do not have to delete the VPN app or erase its profile unless you no longer want the setup on the phone. Decide which outcome you need before changing the setting:

Disconnecting or forgetting a VPN removes its protection for traffic that would otherwise use that tunnel. If the VPN was required by your employer, school, or another organization, check its policy before removing it.
Disconnect a VPN and remove the key icon
The generic Android route below is the best starting point. Android Help notes that some of these instructions apply only to Android 14 and later, and phone makers can rename, move, or redesign the controls.
- Open Settings. Use the Settings app, not the VPN app’s internal screen, for the Android system profile.
- Open the VPN list. Tap Network and internet > VPN. Depending on the phone, the category may appear as Network & internet or use a slightly different capitalization.
- Find the connected entry. The active VPN is shown in the VPN screen. If several profiles or apps are listed, open the one that is currently connected.
- Open its controls. Tap the settings control, commonly a gear icon, beside the VPN entry.
- Disconnect it. Turn the VPN off using the switch or connection control shown for that profile. This keeps the saved VPN details while ending the current tunnel.
- Check the status bar. The key icon should no longer indicate an active VPN after the connection has ended. If it comes back, follow the automatic-reconnect checks below rather than repeatedly switching the same control.
If you cannot find a VPN category, use the Settings search field and search for VPN. Android Help recommends contacting the device manufacturer when the setting still cannot be found, because the exact menu depends on the Android release and the manufacturer’s interface.
Turn off the VPN but keep its configuration
Choose the off or disconnect control when you might use the same VPN again. The saved server, authentication, or app-managed profile remains in Android’s VPN list, so you can reconnect without setting it up from the beginning.
This is the appropriate choice when you are troubleshooting a connection, switching temporarily to an unprotected network, or following an instruction to stop the tunnel for a short time. It does not uninstall the VPN app, cancel a subscription, or remove an organization’s management policy. It only stops the current connection.

Forget a VPN and remove its saved setup
Use Forget when you want the profile removed from the phone’s VPN list.
- Go to Settings > Network and internet > VPN, or search Settings for VPN.
- Tap the settings control beside the VPN profile you want to remove.
- Tap Forget and confirm if Android asks you to confirm.
Forgetting a profile is more permanent than turning it off. You will need to configure the VPN again, or let its app create the profile again, if you later decide to use it. Forgetting the Android profile also does not necessarily uninstall the app that created it; remove the app separately only if that is your intention.

If the key disappears and then returns, Android may be following an Always-on VPN setting. Always-on can start a VPN when the device boots and keep it running. It is designed to maintain a connection, so turning the VPN off once may not be enough.
- Open Settings > Network and internet > VPN.
- Open the settings control beside the VPN that reconnects.
- Find Always-on VPN.
- Turn Always-on VPN off, then disconnect the VPN itself if it is still connected.
The Always-on control may not be shown for a VPN configured through an app. In that case, open the VPN app and look for its own auto-connect, startup, or always-on setting. The wording and location are app-specific, so do not assume that a missing Android switch means the VPN cannot reconnect automatically.
Android Help also notes that turning off Always-on for a VPN clears the persistent notification Android can show when an always-on connection fails. That failure notification is different from the key icon: the key represents an active connection, while the persistent notification reports a problem maintaining an always-on connection.

Pause VPN by Google on a supported Pixel
Some supported Pixel devices include VPN by Google as a built-in VPN. Its temporary control is not the same as forgetting a profile.

- Open Settings > Network and internet > VPN.
- Tap VPN by Google.
- Open the connection status panel and tap Pause VPN.
Google’s support guidance says the pause lasts until the phone connects to a different network. Joining another Wi-Fi network or switching between network connections can therefore allow VPN by Google to resume. Use Pause when you need a short, per-network interruption. If you want the setup removed, use the available removal control instead; if you want to stop automatic behavior, check the relevant VPN or network settings after the pause.
When the VPN menu or controls look different
Android version differences
Android Help identifies some of the documented steps as applying to Android 14 and later. Earlier releases can use different labels, place VPN under another network category, or expose fewer controls. Start with Settings search for VPN, then follow the closest equivalent screen.
Manufacturer interface differences
Phone makers can change the order of Settings categories and the names of switches. You may see Network & internet, Connections, or a manufacturer-specific network section rather than the exact generic wording. The important destination is the system VPN list, where each profile has its connection and saved-profile controls.
App-managed VPNs
A VPN app can create and control its own connection. Android may show the app’s profile in the system VPN list but omit the Always-on option. Open the app for its disconnect and auto-connect controls, while using Android Settings when you need to inspect or forget the system profile.

Work- or school-managed phones
An employer or school can manage VPN settings through device administration. An administrator may force a VPN, prevent users from changing it, or recreate a profile after it is removed. If the switch is unavailable, the profile returns, or Android says the setting is managed, contact the organization’s administrator. The available evidence establishes that administrator control can affect the setting, but management interfaces differ by organization and are not identical across manufacturers.

A different VPN is still active
More than one VPN app or profile can exist on a phone. Return to the system VPN screen and inspect every listed entry. Disconnect the active profile rather than assuming the first profile in the list is responsible.
Always-on VPN restarted the connection
If the icon returns after a manual disconnect, check the Always-on setting for that profile. Disable it before disconnecting again. For an app-managed VPN, check the app’s automatic connection setting instead.
VPN by Google resumed after a network change
On a supported Pixel, Pause VPN is temporary. It can end when the device connects to another network, so a returning key icon after a Wi-Fi or mobile-data change may be expected behavior rather than a failed disconnect.

A work or school policy may require the VPN and may restore it after you turn it off. In that situation, the administrator—not a normal user switch—is controlling the connection.

You are seeing a failure notification, not the key icon
Android can show a persistent notification when an Always-on VPN connection fails. That notification does not mean an active tunnel is currently running. Turn off Always-on for the affected VPN if you want Android to stop trying to maintain that always-on connection. The status-bar key icon, by contrast, indicates an active connection.
Disconnecting versus forgetting: choose deliberately

Security and connectivity consequences
A VPN can change how traffic is routed and protected. When you disconnect or forget it, traffic that was using the VPN no longer travels through that VPN connection. If the VPN was required to reach an internal company or school service, that service may stop working until the VPN is restored. If the VPN was configured for a particular network policy, turning it off changes the phone’s network path even though the phone itself continues to access the internet normally.
For that reason, use Turn off for a reversible test and Forget only when you are comfortable recreating the setup. On a managed device, follow the administrator’s instructions instead of deleting a required profile.

- Open Settings > Network and internet > VPN, or search Settings for VPN.
- Open the controls beside the active VPN.
- Turn it off to disconnect while retaining the setup.
- Tap Forget only when you want the saved profile removed.
- If it reconnects, disable Always-on VPN or the VPN app’s equivalent auto-connect setting.
- On a supported Pixel using VPN by Google, use Pause VPN for a temporary, current-network pause.
- If controls are missing or the profile returns on a work or school phone, ask the device administrator.
- If the menu is absent, search Settings for VPN and consult the phone manufacturer’s instructions.
What to expect after the change
Turning off the active VPN stops the connection but leaves its setup available. Forgetting removes that setup from Android’s VPN list. Disabling Always-on prevents that specific always-on behavior, while an app or administrator can still impose separate connection rules. Pausing VPN by Google is temporary and can end after a network change. These distinctions explain why the key icon may disappear immediately after one action yet return after another.
