Android’s ad controls and its advertising ID are separate. To limit Android-mediated ad personalization and measurement, open Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy, then switch off Ad topics, App-suggested ads, and Ad measurement individually. Reset or delete the advertising ID in a different Privacy > Ads menu. The exact labels can differ by Android version, phone maker, and language.

These changes do not remove advertisements from apps, guarantee that every ad is non-personalized, or override an app’s own privacy and advertising settings. The controls limit particular Android services; they are not a universal tracking or advertising blocker.

What Android’s ad privacy controls actually cover

Android documents three separate Ads privacy features: Ad topics, App-suggested ads, and Ad measurement. Each governs a different exchange between Android and apps. You can turn off all three or leave a feature enabled according to your preference. Google’s current instructions are in Manage your ad privacy settings on Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The advertising ID is a fourth, separate setting. It is an identifier that apps can use for advertising and measurement on supported Google Play services devices. Resetting it gives you a new identifier; deleting it removes the identifier. Neither action automatically changes every app’s internal profile or its own advertising choices.

Turn off all three Ads privacy features

You do not need a subscription, accessory, or special app. The procedure uses Android’s built-in Settings app and is free.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Google. On some phones, you may need to tap All services first.
  3. Under Privacy & security, tap Ads.
  4. Tap Ads privacy.
  5. Open each feature and switch its Allow setting off: Ad topics, App-suggested ads, and Ad measurement.
  6. Read any confirmation shown by your phone and return to the Ads privacy page to verify that each selected control is off.

Android says the feature list may not appear until a feature is fully available and apps begin using it. Settings names and locations can also vary by device software and localization. If you cannot find the route, use the Settings search field for Ads or Advertising ID rather than assuming your phone is missing the capability.

Ad topics

Android records topics inferred from the apps you use. An app may ask Android for those topics, and Android says it shares up to three topics at a time with an app. Turning off the Ad topics Allow setting stops this Android-mediated topic sharing.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some versions also let you remove an individual topic instead of disabling the feature. When you remove one, Android says it will not share that topic again, but you may still see ads related to it. Android says ad topics are deleted after four weeks. Those statements describe Android’s topic service; they do not promise that an app has erased information it collected independently.

App-suggested ads

Apps can recommend and store ad suggestions in Android for possible use in other apps. Turning off App-suggested ads prevents that Android-mediated use. If the page offers an individual-app control, blocking an app deletes the suggestion data associated with that app, although ads related to the app may still appear. Android says suggestion data is deleted regularly.

This control does not prohibit an app from showing ads based on information it handles itself. It only stops the described Android service from supplying or using app-suggested ad data.

Ad measurement

Ad measurement lets apps share limited information, such as when an ad was shown, so performance can be measured. Switch off Allow ad measurement to disable this Android feature. The setting concerns the measurement exchange; it does not stop an app from displaying an ad or prevent every form of analytics that the app operates under its own policy.

Reset the advertising ID separately

The advertising ID is not controlled by the three Ads privacy switches. Google’s Play Console documentation lists the advertising-ID controls under Settings > Privacy > Ads. See Advertising ID for Google’s documented behavior.

Reset the identifier

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy, then Ads. If your phone uses a different arrangement, search Settings for Advertising ID.
  3. Tap Reset Advertising ID.
  4. Confirm when Android asks.

A reset changes the identifier supplied to apps. Treat this as a new identifier, not as a command that erases every advertising record held by every app. Apps may retain their own settings or data, and those settings can affect the ads you see.

Delete the identifier instead

  1. Follow the same Settings > Privacy > Ads route, or find it by searching Settings for Advertising ID.
  2. Tap Delete Advertising ID.
  3. Confirm the deletion.

On supported devices with Google Play services, Google says deletion removes the identifier and that attempts to access it return a string of zeros. Google also warns that apps may have their own settings, which can affect the types of ads shown. Google’s details appear in Ads.

Older Android wording

Older Android releases may place the control at Privacy > Advanced > Ads > Opt out of Ads Personalization. That label is not the same as the newer Ads privacy page. If it is the only ad-related option you can find, use it as the version-specific control shown by your phone, then search for Advertising ID to look for reset or deletion choices. Do not assume that a menu path documented for one Android release appears unchanged on another.

Which setting should you change?

Setting What it controls Available action What can still happen
Ad topics Topics Android records from app use and may provide to requesting apps. Turn off the Allow setting, or remove an individual topic where offered. Ads related to a removed topic may still appear; Android says topics are deleted after four weeks.
App-suggested ads Suggestions that apps recommend and Android stores for potential use in other apps. Turn off the feature, or block an individual app where that option appears. Ads related to a blocked app may still appear; the app may use its own data and settings.
Ad measurement Limited event data, such as when an ad was shown, used to measure performance. Turn off Allow ad measurement. Ads can remain visible, and an app’s independent analytics or policy still applies.
Advertising ID reset The identifier apps can use for advertising and measurement. Choose Reset Advertising ID and confirm. A new identifier does not automatically erase app-held profiles or settings.
Advertising ID deletion The same identifier, removed rather than replaced. Choose Delete Advertising ID and confirm. On supported Google Play services devices, access attempts return zeros; apps still have independent settings.

Reset versus delete: which is appropriate?

Choose Reset Advertising ID when you want to replace the current identifier with a new one. This can separate future app activity from activity associated with the old identifier, but it is not an eraser for data an app already stored. A reset is reversible in the sense that apps receive an identifier again, although it will be a different value.

Choose Delete Advertising ID when you want the identifier removed on a supported Google Play services device. Google says an access attempt then returns a string of zeros. Deletion is not the same as uninstalling every app, closing an account, or deleting an app’s server-side records. If you later see an option to create or restore an advertising identifier, read the confirmation carefully before accepting it.

What changes after you switch the controls off

Ads do not disappear

Disabling Ads privacy features limits the specific Android services described above. It does not remove advertising slots from free apps, websites, games, or streaming services. An app can continue to show ads using its own logic, contextual information, or other data permitted by its policy.

Google’s explanation of personalized advertising also describes opt-out controls without promising that ads disappear. Read About privacy and personalized ads for Google’s description of that distinction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Personalization is not guaranteed to stop everywhere

Android says the ads you see can depend on the Ads privacy controls, advertising-ID settings, and individual app policies. Turning off one or all Android controls therefore cannot guarantee that every ad will be non-personalized. A service may have a separate account-level or in-app setting, and an advertiser may use information that is not supplied through these Android features.

Resetting is different from deleting

A reset replaces the advertising ID with another identifier. Deletion removes the identifier on supported Google Play services devices, where an access request returns zeros. Neither operation should be described as a universal deletion request for all advertising data. The distinction matters if you are trying to stop a specific app from recognizing an old identifier: you may still need to use that app’s own privacy, account, or data controls.

How to handle individual topics or apps

Remove a topic without disabling all topics

  1. Open Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy.
  2. Tap Ad topics.
  3. Select the topic you do not want Android to share and choose the remove option shown on your device.
  4. Remember that Android will not share that removed topic again, but an ad related to it can still be displayed.

Use the global Allow switch instead when you do not want Android’s topic service operating for any app. Removing a topic is narrower: it changes that topic, not the other topics that remain available. Android says up to three topics may be shared with an app at one time, so removing one does not necessarily affect the others.

Block one app’s suggestions

  1. Open the same Ads privacy page and select App-suggested ads.
  2. Find the app whose suggestions you want to block, if your version lists individual apps.
  3. Use the block control and confirm.

Android says blocking an individual app deletes its associated suggestion data. It does not promise that all advertising related to that app stops, because the app can still have independent ad practices.

Requirements, cost, and preparation

There is no paid service, physical product, repair tool, or special download required. You need access to the phone’s Settings app. The Google Ads privacy page and advertising-ID controls may depend on the Android build and Google Play services installed on the device. If a work or school administrator manages the phone, an organization’s policy may restrict or rename some settings.

Before changing anything, note which controls are currently enabled if you may want to restore them. Take screenshots only if they do not expose information you would rather keep private. Changing these switches does not require clearing app storage, signing out of Google, or factory-resetting the phone.

Troubleshoot a missing or different menu

The Ads privacy page is not listed

First, open Settings search and enter Ads privacy, Ads, or Advertising ID. Then check Settings > Google > All services rather than looking only at the first Google screen. Android notes that a feature list may not be visible until the feature is fully available and apps begin using it, so an absent list is not proof that the phone is malfunctioning.

The labels do not match

Phone manufacturers, Android releases, and localizations can change menu names. Look for equivalent labels such as Privacy & security, Privacy, Ads, or Advertising ID. Use the documented route as a guide, not as a guarantee that every device has identical wording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You found an opt-out switch but not reset or delete

On an older release, Opt out of Ads Personalization may be the available control. Search separately for Reset Advertising ID or Delete Advertising ID. Google’s documentation contains paths that do not exactly match the newer Android Ads privacy route, so do not infer that one missing label means the other controls are unavailable.

A switch turns itself back on or behaves unexpectedly

Reopen the page and check the actual state after leaving Settings. If the switch is present but an app still shows personalized-looking ads, review that app’s privacy and advertising settings. Android’s controls do not override those independent practices. If the entire feature is absent, the phone’s Android build may not expose it yet, or the feature may not be active for apps on that device.

After changing the settings: a verification checklist

  1. Return to Ads privacy and confirm each intended Allow switch is off.
  2. Check whether you meant to remove one topic or disable all topic sharing; these are different actions.
  3. Open Privacy > Ads and verify whether you reset or deleted the advertising ID, rather than assuming the Ads privacy switches changed it.
  4. Review the privacy page of apps that matter most to you, especially apps with account-based advertising controls.
  5. Expect ads to remain. A continuing ad is not proof that the Android switch failed.

A practical sequence for maximum control

If your goal is to reduce Android-mediated personalization while preserving the ability to use the phone normally, use this order:

  1. Turn off Ad topics to stop Android from sharing the topic signals described by Google.
  2. Turn off App-suggested ads to prevent Android-mediated storage and use of app suggestions.
  3. Turn off Ad measurement if you do not want the documented limited measurement exchange.
  4. Choose Reset Advertising ID if you want a new identifier for future app interactions.
  5. Choose Delete Advertising ID instead of reset if your supported device offers deletion and you want the identifier removed.
  6. Open frequently used apps and review their own privacy or ad-personalization settings, because Android’s switches cannot change those policies.

You can perform only the steps relevant to your concern. For example, removing one unwanted topic is a narrower change than turning off the entire topic feature, while deleting the advertising ID is a separate decision from disabling ad measurement.

What these settings cannot promise

  • They cannot block every advertisement.
  • They cannot guarantee that every ad is non-personalized.
  • They cannot erase all data an app already collected under its own policy.
  • They cannot force an app to adopt Android’s settings if that app uses independent controls or practices.
  • They cannot make every Android phone display the same menu path or feature list.

The documented effect is narrower and useful: you can control Android’s ad-topic, app-suggestion, and measurement services, then separately reset or delete the advertising ID where your device exposes those options.

Frequently asked questions

Will turning off Ads privacy remove ads?

No. Ads can continue in apps, games, websites, and streaming services. The settings limit particular Android services and do not remove advertising slots.

Are Ad topics and the advertising ID the same thing?

No. Ad topics are signals Android derives from app use and may share with requesting apps. The advertising ID is a separate identifier managed in the Privacy > Ads area. You must change each type of setting separately.

What does “up to three topics” mean?

Android says it can share up to three topics at a time with an app. Removing one topic stops Android from sharing that topic again, but related ads may still appear and other topics may remain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does Android keep an ad topic?

Android says ad topics are deleted after four weeks. That statement applies to Android’s topic service, not necessarily to information an app collected independently.

Does deleting the advertising ID delete my app profiles?

No. Google describes deletion of the identifier separately from app-specific settings and data. Apps may retain their own profiles or account information, and those practices can affect the ads you see.

Should I reset or delete the advertising ID?

Reset when you want a new identifier. Delete when you want the identifier removed on a supported Google Play services device; Google says access attempts then return zeros. Neither choice is a universal deletion request for all advertising data.

Why can I not find Ads privacy?

Feature availability, Android version, manufacturer software, and localization affect menus. Search Settings for Ads, Ads privacy, or Advertising ID, and check Google’s All services page. Older phones may show only Opt out of Ads Personalization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to reset the phone after changing these options?

No reset or factory wipe is required. Change the switches, confirm them on the relevant page, and then review individual apps if their own advertising settings remain active.

Bottom line

Start at Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy and switch off each of the three controls you want disabled. Then use Privacy > Ads to reset or delete the advertising ID separately. Search Settings when your phone uses different labels, and remember that these choices limit Android-mediated ad features rather than removing ads or overriding individual apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will turning off Android’s ad privacy features stop all ads?

No. Ads can still appear, including ads related to removed topics or blocked apps. Individual apps and services may use their own advertising and privacy settings.

Can I disable one topic without disabling Ad topics entirely?

On versions that provide the option, open Ad topics and remove the specific topic. Android says it will not share that topic again, although related ads may still appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between resetting and deleting the advertising ID?

Resetting supplies apps with a new identifier. Deleting removes it on supported Google Play services devices; Google says access attempts return a string of zeros.

Does deleting the advertising ID erase data apps already collected?

No. Apps can have independent settings, account records, and profiles that affect advertising.

Why is my Ads privacy menu missing?

Menus vary by Android release, phone maker, and localization. Search Settings for Ads, Ads privacy, or Advertising ID, and check Settings > Google > All services.

How much does this procedure cost?

Nothing. It uses the built-in Settings app and does not require a subscription, accessory, or special software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Disable Ad topics, App-suggested ads, and Ad measurement under Android’s Ads privacy page, then reset or delete the advertising ID separately under Privacy > Ads. Menu labels vary, and these controls limit Android-mediated ad features rather than eliminating ads or app-level tracking.
