To shut down an iPhone, show the Power Off slider using the button combination for your model, or use Control Center or Settings. Drag the slider to turn the phone off. If the iPhone is frozen and will not respond to normal shutdown, use a force restart instead.
Turn off an iPhone with its buttons
iPhone with Face ID
- Press and hold the side button and either volume button at the same time until the sliders appear.
- Drag the Power Off slider and wait for the iPhone to shut down.
iPhone with a Home button
- Press and hold the side button until the sliders appear.
- Drag the Power Off slider.

Turn off an iPhone without the button combination
Use Control Center
- Open Control Center.
- Touch and hold the Power button in the top-right corner until the shutdown slider appears.
- Drag the Power Off slider.
Use Settings
- Open Settings and tap General.
- Scroll down and tap Shut Down.
- Drag the Power Off slider.
These on-screen methods are useful when you would rather not use the physical-button shortcut. Apple lists both in its iPhone User Guide.
Turn the iPhone back on
Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Apple’s restart guidance also identifies the top button for older models that have one. See Apple Support’s restart instructions for the model-specific steps.

Restart normally or force-restart a frozen iPhone?
Normal restart
A normal restart is a shutdown followed by turning the iPhone back on. Apple’s instructions vary the shutdown button by model generation:
- iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, or later: Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the slider appears.
- iPhone 6, 7, 8, or iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation): Press and hold the side button until the slider appears.
- iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 5, or earlier: Press and hold the top button until the slider appears.
Drag the slider, wait 30 seconds for the iPhone to turn off, then press and hold the side or top button, as appropriate, until the Apple logo appears. These generation groups and timing are from Apple Support’s restart instructions.

Force restart when the phone is unresponsive
Apple advises: “If iPhone isn’t responding, and you can’t turn it off then back on, try forcing it to restart.” A force restart is a troubleshooting step for an unresponsive iPhone, not the ordinary way to shut down a working phone. For an iPhone with Face ID:
