On a supported Galaxy phone, open Settings > Galaxy AI > Notification highlights > Summarize notifications, then turn off the switch at the top. On Galaxy S26 models, Samsung also documents Settings > Notifications > Notification highlights. If neither path appears, search Settings for Notification highlights or Summarize notifications; the menu depends on your model, One UI version and app version.
Turn off all AI notification summaries
Samsung calls the feature Summarize notifications. It is grouped under Notification highlights. Turning off the main switch disables the feature broadly for supported apps on the phone. This is the quickest choice if you do not want Galaxy AI generating condensed versions of incoming conversations.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Galaxy AI, then Notification highlights, if those entries are present.
- Open Summarize notifications.
- Turn off the switch at the top of the screen.
Samsung’s U.S. support guide describes the control while explaining how to activate the feature, but the same switch is the control to disable it. Once it is off, the phone no longer uses that setting to create notification summaries.
If you opened a related notification category instead, go back and look specifically for the words Notification highlights and Summarize notifications. Generic notification controls can change whether an app alerts you, but they are not the Galaxy AI summary switch.

Use the alternate Galaxy S26 menu path
Samsung Canada’s guide for the Galaxy S26 series places the setting in a different location:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Notification highlights.
- Open Summarize notifications and turn off its switch.
That S26 guide was last updated March 20, 2026. The difference between the U.S. and Canadian instructions does not necessarily indicate a problem with your phone; Samsung changes menu organization between models, regional software builds and releases. The Galaxy S26 route is documented specifically for the S26 series, so do not assume it is the correct path on an older Galaxy model.
In practical terms, both documented routes lead to the same feature family. The route that appears on your phone is the one to follow; do not keep changing unrelated notification permissions because another Galaxy model shows the setting somewhere else.
Find the setting when neither route matches
Use the search control inside Settings and enter either Notification highlights or Summarize notifications. Open the result that matches the feature name rather than a general notification category. Searching both phrases matters because Samsung documentation and software screens can emphasize either the group name or the individual feature name.
If Settings search returns no result, check the phone model and software version. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting documentation describes Notification highlights on One UI 8.5 or later, including the Galaxy S26 series and newer models. Samsung also warns that feature availability and menu options can vary with the phone model, software version and app version. A Galaxy phone that does not support the feature will not show the switch, and changing notification permissions will not create it.
Do not treat a missing menu as proof that the phone is malfunctioning. Samsung’s support material does not promise the feature on every Galaxy device, and the S26-specific instructions should not be generalized to all models. If the exact labels are absent after a Settings search, the phone may simply be on an unsupported model or software release.
Disable summaries only for selected apps
You do not have to choose between summaries everywhere and summaries nowhere. Samsung documents individual app controls, so you can leave Notification highlights available and turn off Summarize notifications in the notification settings for particular apps.

- Open the notification settings for the app you want to change.
- Find that app’s Summarize notifications control.
- Disable the control for that app.
- Repeat for each app whose summaries you do not want.
The exact screen used for an app can vary by Galaxy software release. If you cannot see the control inside the app’s notification settings, use Settings search for the app name together with “notification,” then look for the Notification highlights or Summarize notifications entry. Samsung’s wording indicates that individual app settings can enable or disable the feature even when the broader Notification highlights feature remains available.
This selective approach is useful when you want a condensed view from some conversational apps but want the original wording from others. It also avoids changing the setting for every supported app when only one app’s summaries are unwanted. Because Samsung says supported-app lists may change, review the relevant app control again after a software or app update if the behavior changes.

What Notification highlights actually summarizes
Samsung describes Summarize notifications as an AI feature for conversational notifications. It does not summarize every type of alert indiscriminately. A supported app and supported language are required, and Samsung says those lists can change.
Samsung’s U.S. guide says the feature uses notification history from the previous 24 hours. The Galaxy S26 guide in Canada describes AI-generated summaries based on unread notifications. Because Samsung uses different descriptions for different software documentation, the exact set of notifications considered may differ by device and version. Treat the labels and behavior on your phone as authoritative for that software build.

One software build may evaluate recent notification history, while another documentation set describes unread notifications. It is safer to open the original conversation when you need the complete sequence, timestamps or exact wording.
Samsung also warns that summaries are not guaranteed to be accurate. Its official support note states: Summaries may not always be accurate.
A generated summary is therefore a convenience, not a replacement for opening the original notification when the wording or context matters. This is especially important for instructions, appointments, disputes or any message where a missing detail could change the meaning.
Why a summary may not appear even when the feature is enabled
Missing summaries do not necessarily mean the switch is broken. Samsung lists several operating requirements and limits. The feature is conditional, so an enabled switch does not guarantee an output for every notification.

These figures are feature requirements published in Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guide, not performance statistics. They explain why a short message, a newly arrived chat or a phone in Power saving mode may produce no summary. They also explain why testing with a single brief notification can give the impression that the feature is unavailable even though a supported, longer conversation would qualify.

The timing rules are measured differently for one-to-one and group conversations: three minutes for the former and nine minutes for the latter. A notification that is under 200 characters may also be excluded. Samsung’s wording says “may not” be summarized, so these conditions should be treated as limitations rather than a promise that every qualifying message will produce a summary.
Troubleshoot the setting step by step
The Notification highlights entry is missing
- Search Settings for both “Notification highlights” and “Summarize notifications.” Samsung may expose one label but not the other in search results.
- Check whether the phone is running the software generation that supports the feature. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting page covers One UI 8.5 or later, including the S26 series and newer models.
- Do not assume that an older Galaxy model has the feature simply because another Galaxy phone does. Samsung explicitly says model, software and app versions affect availability.
- Remember that the Canada instructions are for the Galaxy S26 series. On another model, the documented U.S. Galaxy AI route may be the relevant one, or the feature may not be present at all.
The switch is present, but summaries continue
- Return to the main Summarize notifications screen and verify that the switch is off, rather than changing a different notification category.
- Check whether the summaries are coming from a per-app setting. Samsung supports individual app controls, so an app-specific configuration can differ from what you expected.
- Use the exact feature names in Settings search. Generic searches for “AI” or “notifications” can return unrelated controls.
- Compare the screen you changed with the feature label. Turning off an app’s ordinary notifications is a different action from turning off that app’s AI summaries.
The feature is enabled, but nothing is summarized
- Confirm that the app and language are supported; Samsung’s lists can change over time.
- For a one-to-one conversation, allow at least three minutes of notification history. For a group conversation, allow at least nine minutes.
- Check whether the notification contains fewer than 200 characters.
- Make sure the screen is off and the phone has at least 30% charge. Turn off Power saving if it is preventing the feature from running.
- Remember that the U.S. documentation refers to the previous 24 hours of notification history, while the S26 Canada documentation refers to unread notifications. The phone’s software version determines which behavior applies.
The summary is misleading
Samsung does not promise perfect accuracy. When a summary leaves out context or appears wrong, open the original notification or conversation rather than relying on the generated text. Disabling the main switch or the affected app’s individual control prevents future summaries from that setting.
How the two documented menu paths relate to software versions
The U.S. support route is Settings > Galaxy AI > Notification highlights. The Canada route for Galaxy S26 is Settings > Notifications > Notification highlights. Both lead to the same feature family, but they are not universal instructions for every Galaxy phone.
Samsung’s documentation uses different wording about the source notifications: the U.S. page refers to notification history from the last 24 hours, while the S26 page refers to unread notifications. That difference is a practical reason to identify the model and One UI version before troubleshooting. A menu moved by an update can look like a missing feature, and a change in notification handling can make the output appear different even when the switch is on.

A quick decision guide
- You want no AI summaries: turn off the main Summarize notifications switch.
- You want summaries from only certain apps: keep the main feature available and disable it inside the notification settings of unwanted apps.
- You cannot find either menu: search Settings for the two exact feature names, then verify your model and software version.
- You see no summaries despite enabling the feature: check app and language support, notification age, message length, screen state, charge level and Power saving.
- You distrust a generated summary: read the original conversation; Samsung cautions that summaries may not always be accurate.
What changes when you turn the feature off?
The main switch controls Samsung’s Summarize notifications function. Turning it off is different from disabling all notifications for an app: the app can continue delivering its normal alerts while the AI summary feature is disabled. If you only want to remove summaries from one service, use that service’s individual control instead of the broad switch.

Conversely, leaving the main switch on does not require you to accept summaries from every supported app. Samsung’s per-app controls let you narrow the feature. The broad and selective choices are therefore reversible settings decisions, not separate phone modes or hardware changes.

This is a software setting. You do not need a replacement phone, charger, accessory, repair tool or paid service to turn Notification highlights off. The required control is inside the Galaxy Settings app when the device supports the feature. Buying a new Galaxy phone is not a solution for a missing menu; first verify the current model and software version, because Samsung does not make the feature universal across all devices.

What is the exact Samsung setting called?

Does Power saving affect Notification highlights?
It can. Samsung says summaries may not be provided when the battery is low or Power saving is turned on. The documented activation conditions also include the screen being off and the device having at least 30% charge.
Are Samsung’s AI summaries always accurate?
