There is no single switch that removes artificial intelligence from every app or device. “Turn off AI” can mean disabling a feature, preventing chats from training models, stopping history or memory, removing personalization, or disconnecting an assistant such as ChatGPT from Siri. Those controls have different effects and scopes.
Use the section for your app and change only the setting that matches your goal. Menu names can vary by operating-system version, region, account type, and administrator policy, so confirm the current labels on your device before you finish.
First decide what you want to disable
Before opening Settings, identify the outcome you need. A feature switch changes what an app can do; a privacy switch changes how information is stored or used. The following requests are not interchangeable:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Remove an AI feature: stop a summary, smart reply, assistant, or generative tool from appearing.
- Stop model training: prevent new conversations from being used to improve a provider’s models. This normally does not erase existing history.
- Stop history or temporary retention: keep a conversation out of your visible history or limit how long the provider keeps it.
- Stop personalization or memory: prevent an assistant from using connected services, saved memories, or prior activity to tailor responses.
- Disconnect an assistant: stop a service such as ChatGPT from being called by Siri while leaving other Apple Intelligence features available.
There is no universal “disable AI” setting across an account, phone, or ecosystem. A setting may apply to one chat, one app, a signed-in account on every device, a single device, or a managed work or school environment.

Match the control to the result
If your concern is training, look for a model-improvement or training toggle. If you simply do not want an icon, summary, or voice assistant to appear, look for a feature-availability switch instead. If the concern is who can see information, examine history, activity, memory, connected apps, and deletion controls separately. A single provider can offer all of these controls in different menus.
Also distinguish a setting that prevents future use from one that deletes old material. Turning off training generally affects new conversations; it does not automatically clear saved chats. Disconnecting a service can stop future personalization while leaving information quoted in earlier conversations. Make a note of the specific result you want so you can verify the right setting afterward.
What each control changes
| Goal | Typical control | Scope to check | What may remain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prevent training use | Improve-model or model-training toggle | Account, or browser when signed out | Saved chats and normal product access |
| Keep a conversation out of history | Temporary chat or history control | Individual conversation or app account | Short safety or service retention may still occur |
| Stop personalization | Memory, activity, or connected-app setting | Account and selected services | Earlier chat content and some public information |
| Disable a device feature | Per-feature switch, assistant setting, or Screen Time restriction | Device and operating-system version | Other AI features that have separate switches |
| Remove a connected assistant | Extension or integration switch | Device integration | The standalone assistant and unrelated system features |
Use four questions when comparing any setting: What changes, how broad is the scope, what remains enabled, and who controls the menu? The answer may differ between a single chat, an account, a phone, a browser, and a managed workspace. This approach is more reliable than assuming an app is either completely “AI on” or “AI off.”
ChatGPT: stop training, use temporary chats, or disconnect it from Siri
Turn off use of new chats for model training
- On the web: open ChatGPT, choose your profile menu, select Settings, then Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone and select Done if the web interface displays that button.
- On iPhone or Android: open the sidebar, tap your profile, choose Settings, open Data controls, and switch off Improve the model for everyone.
For a signed-in account, this preference applies across your devices. If you are signed out, OpenAI stores the preference in that browser instead. New chats are not used to improve models after the switch is off, but chats you save can still appear in your history. This is a training opt-out, not a product shutdown. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT data-controls guide for the current labels.
That account-versus-browser distinction matters on a shared computer. A change made while signed out is not necessarily carried to another browser or device. Conversely, a signed-in preference can follow the account when you use ChatGPT elsewhere. Check the profile state before assuming the setting applies globally.
Start a conversation that does not enter history
- Open ChatGPT and start a new conversation.
- Choose Temporary Chat before sending your first message.
OpenAI says a Temporary Chat does not appear in history, does not create or update memories, and is not used to improve models while it remains temporary. OpenAI may retain it for up to 30 days for safety. If you save a temporary conversation, it becomes a regular chat and follows your normal account settings. Use this option when you need a single conversation with reduced persistence, not when you want to disable ChatGPT everywhere.
Temporary Chat is therefore a conversation-level choice, not an account-wide privacy mode. Start it before entering sensitive content; changing settings after a normal conversation has begun does not retroactively turn that conversation into a temporary one. If you need a record, remember that saving changes its status and normal account rules apply.
Stop ChatGPT from being called by Apple Intelligence
- On a supported iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri, then ChatGPT.
- Turn ChatGPT off.
- To stop Siri from suggesting the integration, turn off Setup Prompts in the same area.
This removes the ChatGPT extension from Siri; it does not delete the ChatGPT app or disable Apple’s other system features. Labels differ by operating-system release. OpenAI documents the integration at Setting up ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence.
There are two separate goals here: preventing Siri from calling ChatGPT and preventing the ChatGPT service from retaining or using chats. Turning off the extension addresses only the first. If you still use the standalone app, review its Data controls and choose Temporary Chat when appropriate.

Google Gemini: disable activity or disconnect personalization sources
Turn off Gemini Apps Activity
- In the Gemini mobile app: open your profile menu and tap Gemini Apps Activity.
- Tap the control showing that activity is on.
- Choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity, then confirm your choice.
- On the web: open Gemini, choose Settings & help, and select Activity to reach the same control.
Turning off activity does not disable every Gemini capability. Google says conversations may still be retained for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback; that temporary retention does not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. Work or school accounts may have the setting controlled by an administrator. Read Google’s Gemini Apps Activity instructions for account-specific wording.
The two choices have different effects. Turn off changes future activity handling, while Turn off and delete activity also offers deletion of activity already listed there. Neither choice should be described as removing Gemini from the phone or blocking every response. Gemini can remain available even when activity history is not being used in the usual way.

Disconnect a Google service from personalization
- On the web: open Settings & help, select Personal Intelligence, and open Connected Apps.
- On mobile: open your profile, tap Personal Intelligence, then Connected Apps.
- Switch off the service you do not want Gemini to use for personalization, such as Google Photos, Workspace, Search services, or YouTube when that option is available.
Disconnecting an app stops that app from personalizing Gemini; it does not remove information already present in earlier chats. Google also says Gemini may still use public information from some Google services. Changes to deleted or updated connected-app content can take days to affect the Gemini experience. Details and availability are listed in Google’s Connected Apps help page.
For example, disconnecting Photos should not be treated as deleting a photo-related answer already included in a conversation. Review and delete old chats separately if that is part of your goal. Connected-app choices can also vary by account and location, so an option visible in one account may not appear in another.
Why one Gemini switch is not enough
Gemini activity, connected-app access, saved memory, individual app permissions, and the Gemini assistant itself are separate controls. Turning off one does not imply that the others are off. After changing a setting, return to Gemini’s settings and check each category relevant to your privacy goal.
iPhone: turn off individual Apple Intelligence and Siri features
Apple exposes separate switches rather than one master control. The exact list depends on your iPhone model, software version, language, and region. Apple’s current guide, written in an iOS 27 context, lists controls for Siri AI, Messages summaries, Mail summaries and smart replies, notification summaries, voicemail suggestions, call-context cards, and Journal writing prompts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDisable Siri’s AI features
- Open Settings and tap Siri (the label may appear as Apple Intelligence & Siri on some releases).
- Turn off the available Apple Intelligence or Siri AI option.
- Where offered, select the option to use Siri Classic.
Do not apply the iOS 27 path to older releases without checking the menus on the phone. Feature availability is limited by supported hardware, language, and region.
If Siri itself is still enabled, ordinary voice commands can continue to work after its newer AI functions are disabled. Selecting Siri Classic, where available, is a way to choose the older assistant behavior rather than removing Siri from the device altogether.
Disable summaries, suggestions, and writing assistance separately
In Settings, open the relevant Apple Intelligence, Siri, Messages, Mail, Notifications, Phone, or Journal section and switch off only the feature you do not want. Examples include notification summaries, Mail summaries, smart replies, voicemail suggestions, call-context cards, and Journal writing prompts. Apple lists the current per-feature paths in its iPhone user guide.

- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
Because these are independent controls, turning off notification summaries will not necessarily disable Mail smart replies, and disabling Journal prompts will not affect Siri. Work through the list of features you actually see on your model instead of looking for a single confirmation that “AI” is off.

Restrict features for a child or managed device
Use Settings > Screen Time when the goal is to restrict access rather than change your own preferences. Screen Time restrictions can supplement the individual Apple Intelligence switches, but they do not automatically remove every AI capability supplied by third-party apps.
A child can still encounter AI in a separate downloaded app or service unless that app is restricted too. Screen Time is therefore an access-management layer, not a complete inventory of system and third-party AI features.
Remove the ChatGPT extension separately
If Siri is still offering ChatGPT after you disable Apple Intelligence features, use the dedicated integration path: Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT, then turn ChatGPT off. Also disable Setup Prompts if suggestions are the problem. This integration setting is independent of the ChatGPT app’s training and history controls.
Microsoft Copilot: check the app version and account type first
Microsoft’s documented privacy controls cover personalization and memory, model training, personalized advertising, and conversation history for personal accounts. The support page also describes an 18-month conversation-history period for the older Copilot app and provides deletion controls.

Microsoft says the page applies only to the older Copilot app version and does not apply to work or school Microsoft 365 Copilot. Microsoft introduced an updated web, desktop, and mobile app on August 18, 2026. Therefore, do not assume that an old menu path is valid in the current app.
For a personal Copilot account
- Open Copilot and locate its Privacy or account-settings page. The location differs among the web app, Windows or macOS app, mobile app, and Edge Sidebar.
- Review separate controls for personalization or memory, model-training use, personalized ads, and conversation history.
- Delete existing conversations if your goal is removal; switching off training or personalization does not by itself erase history.
- Save the setting, sign out and back in if requested, then verify that the control remains off.
Because the published instructions target an older version, use Microsoft’s current privacy page inside the updated app for the exact labels: Microsoft Copilot privacy controls.
Do not assume that changing a setting in Edge Sidebar changes a separate Copilot installation or another account. Check each surface where you use Copilot. If the page offers independent switches, change only the categories that match your goal and use the deletion control for existing conversations.
For a work or school account
Your organization may control retention, training, connected services, and feature availability. The personal-account instructions above do not apply to Microsoft 365 Copilot. Contact your administrator or consult the organization’s Microsoft 365 privacy documentation instead of changing a personal Copilot setting.

How to verify that the change worked
- Check the scope: determine whether the setting says it applies to this conversation, this device, this browser, your account, or an organization.
- Test the feature: start a new chat or invoke the assistant in the same app and confirm that the disabled option no longer appears.
- Check history separately: a training opt-out may leave existing chats visible, and a disconnected app may leave earlier information in old conversations.
- Review residual retention: temporary service or safety retention can continue after a history or activity switch is turned off.
- Check integrations: disabling a standalone app does not necessarily remove its Siri, browser, keyboard, or connected-service extension.
- Repeat on other accounts: signed-in preferences may follow your account, while signed-out preferences can be stored only in one browser. Work and school accounts can have administrator-enforced settings.
Take a screenshot or write down the switch you changed and the date. This is useful when a vendor redesigns its menus, when another family member uses the same device, or when you need to restore the feature later. If the feature still appears, identify whether it is a different provider, a different account, or a separate integration rather than repeatedly changing the same toggle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common reasons an AI feature appears to stay on
You changed privacy, not availability
Turning off training, activity, or personalization usually leaves the assistant usable. To remove the feature from the interface, find the separate app, assistant, or per-feature switch.
The feature belongs to another app
Siri integrations, connected Google services, browser sidebars, and operating-system summaries can have controls outside the main AI app. Check the host device’s integration settings as well as the app account.
Your software version has different labels
Vendors revise menus and roll out features by region. If a path does not match your screen, use the provider’s current help page from inside the app and search for the exact feature name rather than following an old screenshot.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →An administrator controls the setting
Gemini work or school accounts and Microsoft 365 Copilot can have policies that individual users cannot override. A personal-account tutorial cannot remove an administrator-managed feature.
Old data is still visible
History, memories, and text already copied into an earlier chat can remain after a connected app or training switch is changed. Look for a separate delete-history or memory-management control when removal, rather than future-use prevention, is required.
The practical limit of “turning off AI”
You can usually disable a particular assistant, integration, summary, memory source, or training use. You cannot infer from one successful switch that AI is disabled across an entire phone, account, or vendor ecosystem. Treat every relevant layer—conversation, account, app, device, connected service, and administrator policy—as a separate decision, and record what you changed so you can reverse it later.
Frequently asked questions
Does turning off model training delete my old chats?
No. In ChatGPT, turning off Improve the model for everyone prevents new chats from being used to improve models, but saved chats can remain in history. Use the product’s deletion controls if you need to remove existing conversations.

Does turning off Gemini Apps Activity turn off Gemini?
No. It changes activity handling, not every Gemini capability. Google says conversations may still be retained for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback, and that temporary retention does not appear in Gemini Apps Activity.
Will disconnecting Google Photos or YouTube erase information Gemini already saw?
No. Disconnecting a connected app stops that app from personalizing Gemini, but information already present in earlier chats can remain. Public information from some Google services may still be used, and updates can take days to affect the experience.
How do I stop Siri from suggesting ChatGPT?
On a supported iPhone, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT, turn ChatGPT off, and disable Setup Prompts. This controls the Siri integration; it does not change the standalone ChatGPT app’s data settings.
Can I turn off every Apple Intelligence feature at once?
Apple’s guide lists individual switches for Siri AI, summaries, smart replies, suggestions, call-context cards, and Journal prompts. Availability and labels depend on device, software, language, and region, so check each feature shown on your iPhone.
Why do Microsoft Copilot instructions differ from what I see?
Microsoft’s privacy page describes an older Copilot app version, with separate paths for web, desktop, mobile, and Edge Sidebar. It excludes work or school Microsoft 365 Copilot, and an updated app became available on August 18, 2026. Use the current privacy page in your app and verify the account type.
Is there a product I need to buy to disable these features?
No. The documented changes are made in app, account, device, or administrator settings. A privacy accessory or repair tool does not itself switch off these software features.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between turning off AI and opting out of training?
Turning off a feature removes or restricts a function such as summaries or an assistant. A training opt-out changes whether new conversations may be used to improve models, while the product can remain fully usable and saved chats can remain visible.
Do these settings apply to every device I own?
It depends on scope. A signed-in ChatGPT preference applies across devices, while a signed-out preference is stored in that browser. Device integrations and Screen Time restrictions are local, and work or school administrators can impose separate policies.
Can an administrator prevent me from changing an AI setting?
Yes. Google says work or school Gemini settings may be administrator-controlled, and Microsoft’s personal Copilot instructions do not apply to Microsoft 365 Copilot. Contact your administrator for managed accounts.
What should I do if a menu path is missing?
Check the account type, operating-system version, region, and app version. Open the provider’s current help page from the app and search for the exact feature name instead of relying on an older screenshot.
The Bottom Line
There is no ecosystem-wide AI-off button. Choose the exact goal—feature removal, training opt-out, history reduction, personalization control, or integration removal—then change that setting and verify its scope, residual retention, and account or administrator limits.
