LibreOffice does not include AI features in its standard installation, according to The Document Foundation (TDF). If you added an AI extension, you can disable or remove it; separately, save documents to a local drive and check any extension’s provider settings if you want text processing to stay on your computer.
Does LibreOffice have built-in AI to turn off?
No. TDF says AI is not included out of the box; AI functionality can be added through optional extensions. That describes the project’s default application, not every third-party extension or modified installation. TDF’s September 2026 statement discusses AI as an optional feature and says users should be able to choose where inference takes place. TDF’s statement on optional AI
TDF spokesperson Italo Vignoli wrote, “No content may leave the computer without authorisation.” That is a statement of the project’s principle, not a technical guarantee about every third-party extension. An extension’s own settings and documentation determine how it handles text.

Open Tools → Extensions. In the tabbed interface, use the Extensions command.

Review the installed extensions for AI or writing-assistant features. Select the extension you want to manage.

Choose Disable to leave it installed but inactive, or Remove to uninstall it. Restart LibreOffice if prompted or required by the extension.

Some controls may be unavailable for extensions bundled with LibreOffice or installed for all users; changing those may require administrator access. The Extension Manager help describes management options and their scope.

How to tell whether an extension processes text locally
Disabling an extension is the clearest choice if you do not want its AI commands available. If you keep one, inspect its provider and data-handling settings. LibreOffice’s lack of built-in AI does not establish how an optional extension processes selected text.

For example, TDF’s 2025 account of the localwriter extension describes local inference through Ollama or text-generation-webui. A separate extension’s documentation describes sending selected text to local Ollama when configured for it, or to the OpenAI API when that remote provider is selected. These are examples of extension-specific behavior, not options available in every extension. Check the documentation and current configuration for the exact extension you use.
TDF’s localwriter article and the AI Assistant for Writer documentation describe those particular extensions.

How to save documents on a local drive

Choose File → Save As.

Select a folder on your computer’s local drive, then verify the destination path shown in the dialog before saving.

If local-only storage is your goal, avoid a network share or a cloud-synced folder. LibreOffice supports saving to local media, network drives, and internet locations; the selected destination determines where the document is stored.

A local folder does not by itself rule out copying by separate synchronization or backup software. LibreOffice’s Saving Documents help explains the available destination types, but not how other services on your computer are configured.
What metadata removal does—and does not do
To remove personal information from file properties, comments, and tracked changes when saving, open Tools → Options (or Preferences on macOS), then go to LibreOffice → Security → Security Options and Warnings and enable Remove personal information on saving. The option removes user data and replaces author names in comments and tracked changes with generic values. Menu labels can vary by platform and release. Security Options and Warnings help
This setting handles document metadata. It does not disable AI, set an extension’s provider, or choose the save location.

LibreOffice’s Paths help identifies separate locations for temporary files and backup copies in the user profile. If a document is especially sensitive, consider those paths as well as the main save folder. Saving to a local drive does not mean temporary or backup copies are absent.
