In macOS 27, turn off Siri AI by opening System Settings > Siri, selecting Turn Off Siri, and confirming. You can then re-enable Siri and choose Use Siri Classic if you want voice commands without Siri AI. Apple Intelligence summaries, smart replies, voicemail suggestions, Journal prompts, notifications, and ChatGPT are controlled separately.
Turn off Siri AI in macOS 27
- Open System Settings from the Apple menu or Dock.
- Select Siri in the sidebar.
- Click Turn Off Siri.
- Click Turn Off Siri again to confirm.
This is Apple’s supported method for disabling Siri AI (Beta). The setting can be changed later, so turning it off is reversible.
Keep classic Siri without Siri AI
After turning Siri off, return to System Settings > Siri and click Turn On Siri. When macOS offers the choice, select Use Siri Classic. This keeps the traditional Siri experience instead of Siri AI.

Disable Apple Intelligence features in individual apps
Turning off Siri AI does not automatically switch off every summarization or writing feature. Use each feature’s own setting:

Turn off ChatGPT in Siri
ChatGPT is an optional Siri extension. To disable it, open System Settings > Siri > ChatGPT and turn off Use ChatGPT.
If Siri AI is enabled on the Mac, open System Settings > Siri > Extensions, select ChatGPT, and turn off Use Extension. ChatGPT access can also be blocked through Screen Time restrictions.

Restrict Apple Intelligence with Screen Time
For a managed Mac or a child account, use System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Siri. The Siri restrictions can limit access to Apple Intelligence features, including the ChatGPT extension. Screen Time is an Apple-supported control, not a background-process remover.

What turning these settings off does—and does not do
- Scope: The Siri switch controls Siri AI; app settings control summaries, smart replies, prompts, and suggestions separately.
- Reversibility: Every switch listed above can be changed again later.
- Supported approach: System Settings and Screen Time are Apple’s documented controls. Terminal feature flags and third-party debloating scripts are not documented methods for this task.
- System processes: Apple documents feature-access controls, not guaranteed removal of every related process from Activity Monitor. Do not treat a remaining process as proof that the controls failed.
Mac, language, and region requirements
Siri AI is identified as a beta feature in macOS 27. Apple Intelligence requires a compatible Mac, Siri enabled, and the device language set to a supported language. Apple’s September 14, 2026 macOS 27 release supports Mac models with an M1 chip or later, subject to feature and language limits.

Apple lists support for English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Turkish, and Vietnamese. Individual capabilities can differ by language and region. Siri AI initially launched in English, with additional language support announced for October 2026. If a setting is missing, the Mac may not meet the hardware, language, rollout, or regional requirements.

Which control should you use?

| Use traditional Siri | Turn Siri back on, then choose Use Siri Classic |
| Stop summaries or writing assistance | Turn off the corresponding Messages, Mail, Notifications, Phone, or Journal setting |
| Stop Siri from sending requests to ChatGPT | Siri > ChatGPT, then turn off Use ChatGPT; also check Extensions when Siri AI is active |

If AI features still appear
- Check that Turn Off Siri was confirmed, rather than only closing System Settings.
- Review each app-specific switch; Siri’s main control does not cover all summaries and suggestions.
- Check Siri > ChatGPT and, when applicable, Siri > Extensions.
- Verify the account’s Screen Time restrictions are not overriding the setting.
- Confirm the Mac’s macOS version, Apple silicon eligibility, device language, and region. Feature availability varies across those conditions.
