To turn off a responsive Samsung Galaxy Tab S8, hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down together until the power menu appears. Tap Power off, then tap it again to confirm. You can also open Quick Settings, tap the Power icon, and choose Power off. If the tablet is frozen, use the button combination to force a restart instead; that restarts the tablet rather than leaving it off.
Turn off the Galaxy Tab S8 with its buttons
- Press and hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down together for a few seconds.
- When the power menu appears, tap Power off.
- Tap Power off again to confirm.
- To turn the tablet back on later, press and hold the Side/Power button.

Shut down from Quick Settings
- Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open Quick Settings.
- Tap the Power icon.
- Tap Power off, then tap it again to confirm.

If the tablet is frozen or will not turn off
Force a restart
Hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down together for more than seven seconds to force a restart, according to Samsung UK. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance says that shutdown while a device is frozen can take up to 60 seconds. This is a recovery step: the tablet restarts and does not remain powered off. If Maintenance Boot Mode appears
Use the volume buttons to select Normal Boot, then confirm with the Power or Bixby button. If the tablet still will not turn off, Samsung directs users to request service. Samsung U.S.: Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet will not turn off.
If freezes keep happening
Samsung UK recommends checking for software updates and investigating whether a particular app is causing the freezes. Why your screen or button names may look different
Samsung’s support listing identifies the Wi-Fi Galaxy Tab S8 as model SM-X700 and offers manuals for multiple Android versions, including Android 12 and Android 15. The listing does not identify every regional or cellular variant, and menu details can vary by model, region, and installed software.
