To disable 5G, choose LTE in your phone’s mobile-network settings. On iPhone, open Settings > Mobile Data (or Cellular) > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data and select LTE. On a Google Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, choose the SIM, then select LTE under Preferred network type if that option is available. Apple’s 5G Auto and Google’s Adaptive Connectivity are less restrictive alternatives that can reduce 5G use without forcing LTE all the time.
What changes when you turn off 5G?
Selecting LTE changes the preferred radio technology; it does not cancel your mobile plan or switch off cellular data. An iPhone set to LTE uses LTE even in an area where 5G is available. A Pixel set to LTE uses that network type when the carrier and software expose the choice. Calls, messages and mobile data continue through the carrier’s LTE service, subject to coverage.
The battery effect is possible, not guaranteed. Apple says that 5G Auto can save battery by moving to LTE when 5G would not noticeably improve the experience, and warns that 5G On may reduce battery life. Apple does not provide a universal number of minutes or hours gained by choosing LTE, and official guidance does not establish a controlled LTE-versus-5G result for every phone. Treat LTE as a practical experiment for your device rather than a promise of a specific increase.
Turning off 5G is a software setting, so there is no accessory, subscription change or physical installation involved. You can reverse the setting at any time. The main trade-off is that you may give up the higher peak speeds available from your carrier’s 5G network, especially for large downloads, high-resolution streaming and hotspot use.

Turn off 5G on an iPhone
Use LTE for the selected line
- Open Settings.
- Tap Mobile Data. In some regions or language settings, this menu is labeled Cellular.
- Tap Mobile Data Options. If the iPhone has Dual SIM, select the line you want to change before opening its options.
- Tap Voice & Data.
- Select LTE.
The LTE choice is the direct setting for someone who wants 5G disabled. Apple describes it as using LTE even when 5G is available. To verify the setting later, return to the same Voice & Data screen; there is no separate 5G-off switch elsewhere in iOS.
With two active lines, check which line supplies mobile data before changing the setting. Changing the voice-and-data preference for one SIM does not necessarily change the other line. If the wrong line is selected, the phone can continue using 5G for data even though one line is set to LTE.
Choose 5G Auto instead of disabling 5G completely
If you want the phone to use 5G when it materially helps but avoid unnecessary 5G operation, choose 5G Auto in the same Voice & Data menu. Apple calls this Smart Data mode: when 5G speeds do not provide a noticeably better experience, the iPhone switches to LTE automatically. Apple says that behavior saves battery life. It leaves 5G available for situations in which the phone decides the higher speed is useful.
5G Auto is usually the best starting point when you are unsure whether LTE-only will affect streaming, downloads or hotspot performance. It reduces manual switching and allows the phone to use 5G when its benefit is apparent. It is still different from LTE: the phone can connect to 5G under 5G Auto.
Understand the third iPhone choice
5G On tells the iPhone to use a 5G network whenever it is available. Apple’s wording is explicit: “5G On: always uses 5G network when it’s available. This may reduce battery life.” That setting is different from LTE and different from 5G Auto’s adaptive behavior.
If the 5G options are not visible, confirm that the iPhone model, carrier plan and region support 5G. Menu labels can also differ by language. A carrier update or a different SIM profile may change which choices appear; use the carrier’s instructions for the exact line rather than assuming every iPhone has identical options.
Do not confuse Voice & Data with Data Mode
iPhone’s Voice & Data menu controls the radio preference: 5G Auto, 5G On or LTE. The separate Data Mode menu controls how much background and high-data activity is allowed over mobile networks.
- Allow More Data on 5G permits higher-data features when the phone is using 5G.
- Standard allows automatic updates and background tasks on mobile data.
- Low Data Mode pauses automatic updates and background tasks.
Changing Data Mode does not turn 5G off. Conversely, selecting LTE does not automatically enable Low Data Mode. If your goal is specifically to prevent 5G, change Voice & Data; use Data Mode only when you also want to limit cellular-data activity.
For example, Low Data Mode can reduce background transfers while leaving the phone on 5G. LTE can prevent 5G connections while leaving normal background activity unchanged. These controls address different causes of data use and battery consumption, so changing one is not a substitute for the other.

Turn off 5G on a Google Pixel
Select LTE as the preferred network type
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet.
- Tap SIMs.
- Select the SIM or mobile line you want to edit.
- Look for Preferred network type.
- Select LTE, if it is listed.
These are Google’s documented Pixel controls. The exact choices can differ by Pixel model, Android version, country and carrier. Google’s connectivity guidance lists 5G and LTE as possible choices but does not promise that every phone or SIM will show both.
On a Pixel with more than one SIM, edit the line that is actually selected for mobile data. A secondary line can retain its own network preference. After changing the setting, give the phone a moment to reconnect; the status indicator may change only after the next network registration.

If Preferred network type is missing
Do not assume that a hidden code or testing menu is a reliable replacement. Instead:
- Open the Settings search and search for preferred network type or network mode.
- Check the support instructions for your exact phone maker and Android version.
- Contact your carrier if the control is absent, locked or different from the documented Pixel path.
A carrier can determine which network selections are exposed. A menu that exists on one Android phone may not exist on another, even when both use the same Android release. Country, SIM type, firmware and carrier provisioning can all affect the list. If your phone is not a Pixel, use the manufacturer’s terminology and instructions; do not apply the Pixel path as though it were universal.
Pixel alternatives that reduce 5G use
Adaptive Connectivity
Pixel’s Adaptive Connectivity is for people who want automatic decisions rather than a permanent LTE preference. Google says it turns on 5G only when an app needs increased speed, such as when streaming or downloading videos, and recommends enabling it to save battery power. Search Settings for Adaptive Connectivity if your Pixel exposes the feature, then turn it on.
Adaptive Connectivity does not mean that 5G is permanently disabled. An app that needs additional throughput can still trigger 5G, while ordinary background activity may remain on a lower-generation network. This makes it a useful compromise for users who want occasional 5G performance without selecting it continuously.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSome U.S. carriers may limit Adaptive Connectivity. If the option is unavailable or behaves differently, the limitation may come from the carrier rather than a fault with the phone.
Battery Saver
Battery Saver is a broader power-saving mode, not a 5G-only control. Google says that a Pixel with 5G may use 4G while Battery Saver is on, depending on the carrier network. Because this behavior is carrier-dependent, Battery Saver should not be treated as a guaranteed substitute for selecting LTE under Preferred network type.
Battery Saver can also affect other phone behavior, such as background activity and refresh timing. Use it when you need a wider reduction in power use, not merely when you want to test LTE against 5G. Turn it off again when you need normal background synchronization or full performance.

Which setting should you choose?
| Choice | 5G behavior | Battery information | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 5G Auto | Switches to LTE when 5G would not noticeably improve the experience | Apple says the automatic shift saves battery | Option names or availability can depend on market and carrier |
| iPhone LTE | Uses LTE even when 5G is available | Avoids 5G use; no universal measured gain is established | Shown in Voice & Data where supported |
| Pixel LTE preferred | Selects LTE for the chosen SIM when offered | No universal measured gain is established | Varies by phone, Android version, country and carrier |
| Pixel Adaptive Connectivity | Turns on 5G when an app needs higher speed | Google recommends it to save battery power | Some U.S. carriers may limit it |
| Pixel Battery Saver | May use 4G instead of 5G | General power-saving behavior; no isolated 5G-only gain is quantified | Depends on the carrier network |
Choose LTE when you want a predictable, manual restriction. Choose 5G Auto on iPhone or Adaptive Connectivity on Pixel when you prefer the phone to decide. Use Battery Saver when you also want the broader power-saving effects of that mode.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Consider your normal use before deciding. If you mostly send messages, browse, navigate and listen to audio, LTE may feel identical. If you regularly download large files, stream high-resolution video, upload content or use a hotspot, retaining automatic 5G may be more convenient. You can test LTE during a typical day and restore 5G if the speed trade-off is noticeable.
What battery improvement should you expect?
There is no reliable percentage or extra-hours figure that applies to every iPhone or Android phone. Battery use depends on the handset, signal conditions, carrier, software, workload and how often the phone is transferring data. Official documentation supports only a qualitative conclusion: 5G settings can affect battery life, and adaptive modes are intended to avoid unnecessary 5G operation.
A weak or changing signal can also influence power consumption, but official guidance does not quantify how much any one factor contributes. If LTE does not produce a noticeable difference on your phone, another process may be responsible for the drain. Keep the LTE setting only if its coverage and performance meet your needs.
To make a useful personal comparison, test both settings under similar conditions: use the same line, location, brightness, apps and mobile-data workload for a full charging cycle or longer. Compare the phone’s built-in battery statistics rather than relying on a single percentage observed after a brief commute. This is not a controlled measurement, but it avoids mistaking a busy app, poor indoor signal or a software update for a 5G effect.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Coverage, speed and fallback behavior
Choosing LTE can reduce peak mobile-data speeds in places where 5G would have been substantially faster. It may nevertheless feel unchanged for ordinary messaging, web pages or audio because those activities do not always need 5G throughput. Video streaming, large downloads and hotspot use are more likely to expose a speed difference, although the actual result depends on the network.
When 5G is unavailable, 5G phones already fall back to 4G and lower network technologies as supported by the carrier. That fallback is automatic; selecting LTE simply prevents the phone from selecting 5G in the first place. LTE-only does not guarantee service everywhere: if LTE coverage is weak or absent at a particular location, another available network mode may provide better connectivity.
Network generations are not the only measure of performance. A strong LTE signal can be more usable than a congested or weak 5G signal, while a strong 5G connection can be much faster for demanding tasks. Judge the setting by reliability, speed and battery behavior in the places where you actually use the phone.
Troubleshooting after changing the setting
The phone still shows a 5G icon
On Pixel, Google notes that the 5G status-bar icon can indicate that 5G service is available rather than proving that the phone is actively receiving data over 5G. Check the selected network setting instead of treating the icon alone as evidence of an active 5G data session. Other manufacturers may use similar icons with their own meanings.

LTE is not listed
Confirm that you edited the intended SIM and that the phone is running the expected software. If LTE is still absent, the carrier, country, device model or SIM profile may control the available choices. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for that model or ask the carrier which network modes are supported. Do not install an unverified utility or rely on an unofficial dialer code to alter radio settings.
Mobile data stopped working
Review the same SIM’s network selection and make sure you changed only the preferred network type, not the mobile-data or airplane-mode control. If the carrier does not provide LTE service at your location, the phone may have no usable LTE connection until you return to an available network option. Restarting the phone or toggling airplane mode once can prompt a fresh network registration, but it cannot create coverage the carrier does not provide.
Calls or messages behave differently
Network behavior for voice and messaging can depend on the carrier’s LTE implementation and the line’s provisioning. Restore the previous setting and contact the carrier if changing the preferred network type causes a service problem that does not resolve after reconnecting. Ask specifically whether voice over LTE is supported on your plan and device.
The battery did not improve
That result is normal and does not prove the setting failed. Apple only describes a possible battery benefit, and Google recommends adaptive features without promising a fixed gain. Check battery usage for apps, screen time, location services and background activity before attributing all drain to 5G.
How to restore 5G later
On iPhone, return to Settings > Mobile Data (or Cellular) > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data and select 5G Auto or 5G On. On a Pixel, return to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, choose the SIM, open Preferred network type and select the 5G option if it is offered. The choices shown remain subject to the phone, software version, country and carrier.
If you changed a setting for a temporary trip or battery test, make a note of the original option before switching back. Restoring 5G does not require changing Data Mode, mobile-data access or your cellular plan.
Frequently asked questions
Does turning off 5G turn off mobile data?
No. Selecting LTE changes the network generation, while mobile data remains available through LTE when coverage and the carrier plan support it.
Will LTE make calls and texts stop?
Usually not, but voice and messaging depend on carrier provisioning and LTE support. Contact the carrier if calls or messages fail after the change.

Why can’t I find LTE on my Android phone?
Android menus vary by manufacturer, model, Android version, country and carrier. Search Settings for “preferred network type” or “network mode,” then check the maker’s instructions or ask the carrier.
Does the 5G icon prove that data is using 5G?
No. Google says the Pixel icon can indicate availability rather than an active 5G data session. Confirm the selected network option instead.
Can Battery Saver permanently disable 5G?
Not reliably. Google says a 5G Pixel may use 4G while Battery Saver is on, depending on the carrier. It is a broader power-saving mode, not a guaranteed LTE lock.
Will turning off 5G save a fixed number of hours?
No fixed figure applies to all phones. Apple describes possible savings but does not publish a universal LTE-only improvement, and results vary with signal, workload and software.
Do I need to buy anything?
No. The documented changes are settings in iOS or Android. A charger or power bank may help with recharging, but neither disables 5G.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to turn off 5G on an iPhone?
Open Settings, choose Mobile Data or Cellular, then Mobile Data Options, Voice & Data and LTE.
How do I switch a Google Pixel from 5G to LTE?
Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, select the relevant SIM, open Preferred network type and choose LTE if it is offered.
Will my phone automatically return to 5G?
Not while iPhone is set to LTE or a Pixel is set to LTE preferred. You must select a 5G option again, unless the carrier or device software changes the available controls.
Why does my iPhone menu say Cellular instead of Mobile Data?
Apple uses different labels by region and language. Cellular and Mobile Data lead to the same type of network settings.
Can I disable 5G on only one SIM?
Yes, where the phone exposes per-line controls. Select the intended line before changing Voice & Data on iPhone or Preferred network type on Pixel.
Should I choose LTE or 5G Auto?
Choose LTE for a predictable 5G restriction. Choose 5G Auto when you want the phone to use 5G only when it expects a noticeable speed benefit.
