There is no single Android switch called “turn off 3D emoji.” On a Samsung phone, the 3D-looking item is usually either an AI-generated sticker, an AR Emoji avatar sticker, or an ordinary emoji displayed unusually large. To send a standard character, open your keyboard’s regular emoji picker and tap the emoji you want. If the item is a sticker or avatar, leave that feature and return to the keyboard picker instead.
The appearance of an emoji can be controlled by the phone, keyboard, app and Android or One UI version. The steps below separate those cases so you change the right feature without losing ordinary emoji entry.
Identify what “3D emoji” means on your phone
People use “3D emoji” for several different things. They do not share one control, so identifying the source is the quickest fix. A character selected from the keyboard’s emoji grid is an ordinary Unicode emoji. A generated picture, avatar pose or animated image is a sticker feature, even when it is labeled with the word emoji.

Samsung Community guidance uses “3D emoji” for a style option in custom AI stickers. Samsung’s AR Zone documentation describes avatar creation and the production of stickers or GIFs. Both are separate from choosing a standard emoji character in a text field.

Use a standard emoji from the Android keyboard
This is the direct solution when you want the normal text emoji rather than a generated image or avatar.
- Open the app where you are writing, such as a messaging, email or notes app, and tap a text field.
- When the keyboard appears, tap its emoji button. On Gboard this is the smiley icon, usually near the space bar or in the toolbar; the exact position can change with the layout.
- Browse the categories or use the emoji search field, then tap the character you want.
- Send or save the message from the app. Do not select an item from a sticker, GIF or AI-sticker row if you need a text emoji.
Google’s Gboard instructions describe this as ordinary emoji entry. The selected character is inserted through the keyboard’s emoji picker; it is not generated by AR Zone or an AI-sticker tool.
If the emoji button is not visible in Gboard
- Tap the toolbar arrow or the four-square toolbar button to reveal additional controls.
- Select the emoji icon. If the toolbar is customized, open Gboard settings from the keyboard and add the emoji or sticker control to the toolbar.
- Return to the text field and tap the icon again to open the character picker.
Labels and icon placement can differ by Gboard release, screen size and navigation mode. The important distinction is the grid of standard characters, not the sticker or GIF tabs beside it.
Switch away from a Samsung AI or 3D-looking sticker
An AI-generated sticker is a picture. It can have a 3D-rendered appearance, but it is not the same data as a standard emoji character. There is therefore no ordinary-emoji artwork setting to disable for that sticker. Use the character picker instead.

- In the conversation or document, place the cursor in the text field.
- Open the keyboard’s standard emoji picker, not the sticker drawer. On Samsung Keyboard, this may require opening the toolbar first; on Gboard, tap the smiley emoji button.
- Tap the standard emoji from the grid or search results.
- If a sticker panel opens automatically, switch back to the emoji tab before selecting anything.
To stop accidentally inserting the 3D item, avoid the AI Sticker shortcut or remove that shortcut from the keyboard toolbar if your keyboard provides toolbar customization. Samsung’s support information describes toolbar management, but it does not document a universal selector that replaces all ordinary emoji artwork with another design.
How to tell that you inserted a sticker
- The item appears as a separate image bubble rather than inline text.
- It is offered in a sticker, GIF or AI-created collection instead of the Unicode emoji grid.
- You can usually resize, animate or edit it as an image.
Those signs mean you need to return to the keyboard’s ordinary emoji tab; changing the phone’s font or keyboard language will not convert an already-created sticker into a character.
Use or hide a Samsung AR Emoji avatar
Samsung AR Emoji is a camera and avatar feature. Samsung describes AR Zone as a place to create an avatar and produce stickers or GIFs. Availability and exact names depend on the Galaxy model, One UI release and region.

- Choose the AR Emoji or avatar feature to view the avatar and its sticker collection.
- Do not choose an avatar sticker when composing a text message if you want a standard emoji. Close the AR sticker panel.
- Return to the message’s text field, open the keyboard emoji picker and select a character from the regular grid.
Removing or hiding an avatar sticker collection affects that collection only. It does not change the emoji characters offered by Samsung Keyboard or Gboard. If AR Zone is missing, your model or software may not support that feature; the absence of AR Zone does not prevent ordinary keyboard emoji use.

When the problem is emoji size, not 3D artwork
Some users call emoji “3D” because the characters look oversized in the keyboard or message composer. Gboard documents an emoji-size control under its layout settings. By default, Gboard emoji sizes match the device’s font scale. This control changes how large the emoji appears; it is not presented as a way to replace the artwork design.
Adjust the emoji size in Gboard
- Open any text field so Gboard is visible.
- Tap the Gboard settings gear. If the gear is hidden, open the toolbar and tap the three-dot menu, then choose Settings.
- Open Emojis, stickers & GIFs.
- Choose Layout.
- Adjust the emoji-size slider or the available size control, then return to the text field and check the result.
Menu wording can vary by Gboard version. If your build does not show this control, Android’s display or font-size setting may be determining the scale instead. Reducing the device font size can make emoji appear smaller in Gboard, but it also changes the size of other interface text.
Separate size from style
- Size: controlled by Gboard’s layout setting and, by default, the device font scale.
- Style: the artwork supplied by the operating system, keyboard or app.
- Sticker appearance: controlled by the sticker or avatar feature that created the image.
Changing the size slider will not turn a generated sticker into a standard character, and changing font size will not remove AR Emoji or AI Sticker options.

Changing keyboards can alter the controls you see, but it is not a guaranteed way to force one emoji design in every app. Keyboard-specific settings govern the picker and toolbar; apps can render received emoji with their own fonts or graphics.

Gboard also has keyboard-language controls. Changing Gboard’s language changes the languages available for typing; Google’s documentation says it does not change the device language. It is therefore not a solution for changing emoji artwork.
Check whether wallpaper effects are being mistaken for emoji
If the dimensional graphics appear on the lock screen, home screen or wallpaper rather than inside a text field, they are not keyboard emoji. Google’s Pixel wallpaper help distinguishes emoji wallpaper and photo-motion effects from keyboard emoji entry. Open the wallpaper customization controls for the relevant screen and remove or replace that wallpaper effect. Keyboard settings cannot change a graphic that is being drawn by the wallpaper system.

The documented controls cover different layers: Gboard controls its picker, layout and keyboard languages; Samsung Keyboard controls its own toolbar; AR Zone creates avatar media; and AI-sticker tools create image stickers. None of the cited Google or Samsung documentation establishes a system-wide switch that forces one ordinary-emoji artwork set in every app.
Even when two apps receive the same standard character, the phone, keyboard, app and software release can affect how it is displayed. A keyboard change may alter what appears while you are composing, while the receiving app may use a different renderer. For that reason, a setting that makes emoji look “standard” in one app cannot be promised to do the same everywhere.

Troubleshoot by symptom
“I tap an emoji, but a large picture is sent.”
- Check whether you selected a sticker or GIF tab rather than the character grid.
- Return to the ordinary emoji picker and tap the character itself.
- If the character is still oversized but remains inline text, adjust Gboard’s emoji layout or the device font scale.
“The 3D option keeps appearing in my suggestions.”
- Open the keyboard toolbar settings and remove the AI-sticker or sticker shortcut if your keyboard allows it.
- Keep the emoji shortcut visible so the standard character grid is easy to reach.
- Do not delete the keyboard solely to remove an avatar collection; AR Emoji and ordinary emoji entry are separate features.
“I cannot find AR Zone.”
AR Zone is model- and software-dependent. Look for AR tools in the Camera app or app drawer. If they are unavailable, use the keyboard’s ordinary emoji picker; AR Zone is not required for standard emoji.
“The menu names do not match these steps.”
Gboard and Samsung change labels and placement across versions, One UI releases, Android editions and regions. Start from the active keyboard’s gear or toolbar, then look for sections named Emojis, Stickers, GIFs, Layout or Toolbar. On Samsung phones, AR features may be under Camera rather than a separate AR Zone app.
“Only one app shows the 3D appearance.”
That points to app-specific rendering or an app-specific sticker control rather than a universal Android setting. Test the same standard character in another text field. If the other app shows the expected character, adjust the first app’s input or display options instead of changing AR Emoji settings.
A practical decision path
- Is it inside a text field? If no, inspect wallpaper or camera effects. If yes, continue.
- Is it inline text or a separate image? Inline text is ordinary emoji; a separate image is a sticker or avatar.
- Is the inline emoji only too large? Adjust Gboard’s layout or the device font scale.
- Is the image generated, animated or based on your face? Leave the AI-sticker or AR Emoji panel and use the character picker.
- Does the appearance differ by app? Treat it as keyboard- or app-specific; no universal artwork switch is established.
What the available documentation does and does not establish
Google’s Gboard help establishes ordinary emoji insertion, keyboard-language controls and an emoji-size setting whose default follows device font scale. Samsung documentation establishes AR Zone as an avatar-and-sticker feature and provides keyboard customization guidance. Samsung Community guidance identifies a 3D style for custom AI stickers. Together, these sources support choosing standard emoji from the keyboard and changing size, but they do not establish a setting that replaces every ordinary Android emoji design system-wide.
Feature names, menu paths and availability can change with the device model, Android version, One UI release, keyboard version and region. The safest approach is to identify whether you are dealing with a character, sticker, avatar or wallpaper effect, then change that feature’s own control.
