There is no Rockstar-published method yet that proves you can mute GTA 6’s licensed songs while preserving every gunshot, voice line, and other gameplay sound. As of October 16, 2026, Rockstar has described the game’s radio and score but has not published a GTA VI audio-menu walkthrough or confirmed separate controls for radio music, mission score, dialogue, and effects.

When the game is available, the first place to check is Pause Menu > Settings > Audio. That path follows Rockstar’s established GTAV layout, but it is a sensible starting point—not a confirmed GTA VI procedure. The requested result requires a dedicated Radio or Licensed Music control. If the shipped menu has only one broad Music slider, reducing it may also remove mission or ambient music, and Rockstar has not confirmed how that control will behave.

What is confirmed—and what is not

Rockstar’s official GTA VI music information says the game will include “the biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio and podcasts yet” and also identifies an official score. That confirms multiple kinds of music are part of the audio design, but it does not document a player-facing switch that isolates copyrighted radio tracks.

Rockstar’s GTA VI support hub likewise does not currently publish an Audio-settings walkthrough. A current third-party guide reports that the final audio menu and the relationship between radio music and mission score remain unconfirmed. Therefore, no responsible guide can promise that a particular slider will silence licensed songs while leaving gameplay audio untouched.

The exact answer to the common question

If you mean “Can I turn off GTA 6 radio songs but keep gunshots and dialogue?” the answer is not currently documented. The feature may exist in the final game, but Rockstar has not confirmed it publicly. You will need to inspect the shipped audio menu for separately named channels.

Why the distinction matters

“Music” can describe several different audio layers:

  • Licensed radio: songs played by in-game stations.
  • Mission or ambient score: original music used during missions, transitions, or exploration.
  • Dialogue: character voices, phone calls, announcements, and subtitles-related voice playback.
  • Effects: gunshots, footsteps, vehicles, explosions, interface sounds, and environmental audio.

A control that lowers all music may remove both radio songs and score. A radio-only control would be needed to preserve the score while muting licensed tracks. Separate effects and dialogue sliders protect the sounds most players mean by “gameplay audio,” but their existence and exact labels are not confirmed for GTA VI.

Where to look when GTA VI is available

Rockstar’s GTAV support instructions say settings are changed from the Pause Menu and then the Settings tab, where audio options are available. That makes the following route the most reasonable first check in GTA VI:

  1. Pause the game.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Audio or the closest audio-related category.
  4. Read every music-related label before changing a value.

This is an informed starting point based on GTAV, not an officially confirmed GTA VI menu path. The final interface could use different names, group controls differently, or add platform-specific options.

How to test for an independent radio control

Do not assume that a slider named Music means licensed songs only. Use a controlled test so you can identify what each option actually changes.

Step 1: Record the original settings

Before changing anything, note the current values for Music, Radio, Score, Dialogue, Effects, and any master-volume option. A screenshot or written list makes it possible to restore the original mix if a control affects more than expected.

Step 2: Search for precise labels

Look for controls named Radio, Licensed Music, Station Music, Score, Dialogue, or Effects. The wording matters: a control explicitly tied to radio or licensed music is more likely to provide the split you want than a general Music slider.

Step 3: Lower only the dedicated radio control

If a Radio or Licensed Music slider exists, set that control to zero or use its Off option. Leave Effects and Dialogue unchanged. Keep Score unchanged unless you also want to remove mission and ambient music.

Step 4: Verify more than one situation

Test the result in at least three contexts: driving with a station active, an ordinary gameplay encounter involving weapons or vehicles, and a dialogue-heavy scene. A setting may affect radio playback without affecting effects, yet still interact with score or scripted sequences.

Step 5: Check persistence

Return to gameplay, reload a save or restart the game if practical, and verify that the setting remains at zero. Some games apply audio changes immediately; others save them only after leaving the menu or closing the session. GTA VI’s behavior is not documented yet.

What each possible menu design would mean

Menu option you find What it could control Can it guarantee radio-only muting? What to do
Radio or Licensed Music In-game station songs, possibly station jingles and adverts Most likely, but still verify in gameplay Set it to zero or Off; leave Effects and Dialogue alone
Score Mission, cinematic, or ambient music No; it addresses score rather than necessarily radio Leave it unchanged if you want non-radio music
Music only Could combine radio and score No; the scope is not confirmed Lower it cautiously and test whether score disappears
Dialogue Character and scripted voices No Keep it at the desired voice level
Effects or SFX Weapons, vehicles, impacts, ambience, and interface sounds No Keep it unchanged to preserve gameplay cues
Master volume All game audio No Do not use it for selective music muting

If GTA VI has only one Music slider

A single Music slider cannot be treated as a licensed-song switch. It may combine radio broadcasts with the score, or it may control only one of those layers; the label alone does not establish which.

Set the slider to zero only if you accept that other music may disappear. Then test a radio station, a mission with scripted music, and ordinary combat. If the score is also gone, the game does not provide the precise split you wanted through that control.

Do not compensate by lowering Effects or Dialogue. Those channels are the ones that preserve weapon reports, vehicle sounds, environmental cues, and voices. Changing them solves a different problem and can make gameplay harder to follow.

If there is no radio-specific control

If the Audio menu contains no Radio, Licensed Music, or equivalent option, GTA VI has no documented in-game way—at least in the publicly described interface—to mute only licensed tracks. You may still be able to silence all music, but that is not the same result.

External music playback does not selectively remove the game’s own songs. Playing another soundtrack through a console, television, headset, or receiver can add audio or mask what you hear, but it does not alter the game’s licensed-radio channel and may also cover dialogue and effects. It is therefore not a true substitute for an in-game control.

Radio music versus mission score

Players often use “background music” to mean two different things. Radio songs are diegetic: they come from stations, vehicles, or other in-world sources. Score is typically arranged for missions, dramatic transitions, or the broader atmosphere. A future GTA VI menu could combine them, separate them, or expose only one category.

  • Radio or Licensed Music: 0 or Off.
  • Score: your preferred level, if you want mission music.
  • Effects: unchanged.
  • Dialogue: unchanged.

That configuration is a target state, not a setting Rockstar has confirmed. If the game exposes only Music, you cannot infer that the target state is available.

Streaming, recording, and copyright concerns

People commonly ask this question because they stream or record gameplay and want to avoid licensed tracks. Muting radio music can reduce the chance that a broadcast contains songs subject to separate platform claims, but the presence, behavior, and scope of any GTA VI streamer-safe option are not documented in the available Rockstar material.

Do not label a generic Music slider as “streamer mode” unless Rockstar explicitly describes it that way. A streamer-focused setting could theoretically affect radio, score, or both. Until official instructions identify its behavior, verify the resulting mix yourself and monitor whether dialogue, effects, and mission audio remain audible.

Platform and availability considerations

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page uses the wording “Plays best on PlayStation 5.” That is a platform statement, not confirmation of a particular audio-menu feature. Menu labels and accessibility options can differ by platform or build, so a setting documented for one version should not automatically be assumed to exist on another.

If Rockstar later publishes platform-specific support instructions, use the instructions for your edition and update rather than relying on a GTAV-era menu path. The exact platform, edition, and software version should accompany any future claim about the control.

Troubleshooting the mix after changing settings

Radio is silent, but mission music is also gone

The control you changed may combine radio and score. Restore the original value, then look for a separate Radio, Licensed Music, or Score option. If none exists, the game does not document a way to preserve score while removing radio.

Gunshots or vehicle sounds became too quiet

Check Effects or SFX rather than Music. If Effects is unchanged, inspect any master-volume, dynamic-range, speaker, or headset setting before changing additional game channels. A master control can reduce every category at once.

Voices disappeared or are difficult to hear

Check Dialogue and the master volume. Also verify that your platform’s output device is configured correctly. Lowering Music should not be assumed to affect voices, but the final GTA VI audio routing has not been documented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The setting resets after restarting

Reopen Pause Menu > Settings > Audio and confirm whether the value was saved. If it resets, check for a separate apply or confirm action, profile-specific settings, or a pending game update. Rockstar has not published a GTA VI persistence procedure.

Radio still plays after setting Music to zero

The slider may control score rather than radio, or the station may have its own volume setting. Search the entire Audio menu for Radio, Station, Vehicle Radio, or Licensed Music. If no such control appears, there is no confirmed selective method to use.

A practical decision guide

Your goal Control to seek Risk or limitation
Remove station songs only Radio or Licensed Music Not confirmed in GTA VI; test after changing
Remove all musical material Music, Radio, and Score controls, or a documented master music option A broad Music control may affect score and radio together
Keep gunshots and voices audible Leave Effects and Dialogue unchanged Master-volume changes can still reduce them
Prepare a stream without licensed songs An explicitly documented streamer-safe or licensed-music control No such GTA VI option has been confirmed
Use another soundtrack External playback Does not selectively mute the game’s own songs and can mask gameplay audio

What would count as definitive confirmation

A reliable answer will require one of three things: Rockstar’s GTA VI manual, an official support article showing the Audio menu, or a platform-specific guide that names the control and explains what it affects. The useful details would be the exact path, the label, whether it controls radio or score, and whether the setting is available on each platform.

Until that documentation appears, treat reports based on previews, assumed GTAV behavior, or an unlabeled Music slider as provisional. The only safe promise is that a dedicated Radio or Licensed Music control would be the required mechanism; Rockstar has not confirmed that mechanism for GTA VI.
