If your laptop says Wi-Fi is turned off, first check the Wi-Fi control, airplane mode, and any physical wireless switch or function key. If Wi-Fi is on but networks are missing—or the laptop connects without internet—the next steps are different. Work through the checks below in order, starting with the ones that are easiest to undo.
First identify what is wrong
“Wi-Fi is turned off” can describe several different problems. Notice which one matches your laptop before changing drivers or resetting network settings:
- The Wi-Fi control is off: Turn Wi-Fi on in the operating system. On Windows, also check airplane mode and the laptop’s wireless switch or key.
- The Wi-Fi option is missing: Check the physical switch and whether the wireless adapter appears and is enabled in Device Manager on Windows.
- Wi-Fi is on, but no networks appear: Check range, the hardware switch, the adapter, and whether it supports the network’s frequency band.
- The laptop connects to Wi-Fi but has no internet: Investigate the network, router, VPN or security software, or ISP rather than treating it as a turned-off radio.
Wi-Fi connection and internet access are separate stages. If another device also cannot use the same network, the issue may not be the laptop.
Turn Wi-Fi on in Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Open the network controls from the taskbar or go to Settings > Network & internet. Turn on Wi-Fi.
- Check Airplane mode and turn it off if enabled. Microsoft explains that “Airplane mode gives you a quick way to turn off all wireless communications on your PC.” Windows may retain the prior Wi-Fi state while airplane mode is on, so check Wi-Fi itself after disabling airplane mode. Microsoft’s airplane mode guidance describes the control.
- If the Wi-Fi switch is absent or won’t turn on, look for a physical wireless switch or a function key marked with a wireless symbol. Its location and key combination depend on the laptop model; use the manufacturer’s manual rather than guessing.
- To check the adapter, right-click Start and open Device Manager > Network adapters. If the wireless adapter is listed but disabled, enable it. If it is missing or shows an error, find the driver for the exact laptop model on its manufacturer’s support page. If Windows Wi-Fi is on but no networks appear
Check the radio and range
Confirm Wi-Fi is on, any physical switch is enabled, and the laptop is close enough to the router to receive its signal. If nearby networks appear but one particular network does not, the adapter may not support the frequency band used by that network. The router or laptop documentation can help establish supported bands.

Run Windows’ troubleshooter
On Windows 11, use the network troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Also check whether another phone or laptop can join the same network. If other devices can see and use it, focus on the laptop; if they cannot, investigate the network or router. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps.
Consider a driver only when the symptoms point to it
If Wi-Fi stopped working after an update, or the adapter is missing or reports an error, a driver problem is possible. Before uninstalling an adapter, download and keep the correct driver for the exact PC model—especially if the laptop has no other internet connection. Microsoft says Windows can attempt to reinstall an adapter after a restart, but having the manufacturer’s driver available provides a recovery option. Follow the Windows adapter troubleshooting guidance carefully.

Leave network reset until last
Windows network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings. Use it only after the simpler checks fail and you are prepared to reconfigure network settings. Microsoft lists it as a later troubleshooting step in its Wi-Fi connection guide.

- Use the Wi-Fi status menu to turn Wi-Fi on, then move within range of the network. If Wi-Fi is not available as a service in Network settings, follow Apple’s instructions for restoring a missing Wi-Fi service.
- If the Mac connects but cannot reach the internet, check whether other devices can use the network. Restarting the Mac or router may help; also verify the Mac’s date and time, install macOS updates when another network is available, and check whether a VPN or other security software is interfering.
- Use Wi-Fi Recommendations or Wireless Diagnostics when available. Apple notes that Wi-Fi Recommendations are not available for personal hotspots or some enterprise security configurations. Its Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting guidance explains the options.
- Try another Wi-Fi network. If that works, ask the original network’s administrator or your ISP to check the router, connection, or a possible outage. Apple’s internet troubleshooting page was dated March 10, 2025.
When Wi-Fi works on your phone but not your laptop
A phone that connects successfully suggests the network is available, but does not rule out a laptop-specific compatibility or signal issue. On the laptop, confirm Wi-Fi is on, check airplane mode on Windows, and inspect the hardware switch and adapter. If the laptop sees other networks but not this one, check whether its adapter supports the network’s frequency band. If it joins the network but has no internet, investigate laptop VPN or security software and compare results on another network.

Use Ethernet as a diagnostic test if available
If the laptop has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router to test whether internet access works over a wired connection. If it lacks a port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a temporary wired connection for this test. Ethernet can help distinguish a Wi-Fi-specific problem from a broader router or internet issue; it does not turn the Wi-Fi radio back on. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
