There is no documented Google switch that turns off only Help me write. To disable the Gemini-powered Workspace experiences that include Help me write, open Gmail on a computer and go to Settings → See all settings → General → Google Workspace smart features → Manage Workspace smart feature settings. Turn off Smart features in Google Workspace, then select Save. This is a broad control: Google says the listed Workspace experiences, including Gemini in Workspace, will stop working until you turn the setting back on.
The separate Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet setting controls features such as Smart Compose, Smart Reply, automatic categorization, and summary cards. It is not documented as a dedicated Help me write switch.

Gmail presents several smart-feature controls with different scopes. Choosing the wrong one can leave Help me write available or disable unrelated personalization features, so identify the setting before changing it.

Google’s current documentation therefore supports a scope-based answer rather than a one-feature answer: use the Workspace control when you need to stop Gemini in Workspace, and use the Gmail, Chat, and Meet control when you want to change those apps’ personalization features.

Before you turn anything off
Decide which behavior you actually want to change. If you only dislike an occasional suggestion, you do not need to disable a setting; review, edit, or delete that draft. If you want all Workspace Gemini experiences unavailable, the Workspace switch is the relevant documented control, but it may also affect features you use elsewhere in Workspace.
Record the account you are changing, especially if several Gmail accounts are open in the same browser. Settings are account-specific, and a managed work or school account may have administrator restrictions. After changing a setting, keep the confirmation or note the previous value so you can restore it later.
How to turn off Help me write’s documented Workspace control
These are the current desktop steps. Use Gmail in a web browser because Google’s documented route is through the full settings page.

- Turn Smart features in Google Workspace off.
- Return to the settings page and select Save if Gmail presents the save control.
Google states that turning off this setting removes access to the Workspace experiences listed in its help documentation. Its wording is explicit: “When you turn off this setting, you can’t use the experiences listed above in Google Workspace products. To continue to use these experiences, you need to turn the setting back on.” That means this is not a silent, Help me write-only preference. Check whether you depend on other Gemini or smart Workspace functions before saving.
What changes after you switch it off
- Workspace experiences governed by the setting, including Gemini in Workspace, are unavailable while it is off.
- The Gmail, Chat, and Meet smart-feature setting remains a separate preference.
- Turning this control off does not mean that every Google AI feature, every Gmail feature, or every form of Google data processing is disabled.
- Google does not document this control as deleting previously developed model learnings.
- Existing messages and ordinary Gmail functions remain available; the change concerns the smart experiences covered by Google’s list.
If Help me write still appears immediately after saving, refresh Gmail, close and reopen the compose window, and confirm that you changed the intended account. Google does not promise that every visible entry point disappears instantly on every device, so treat the setting’s scope—not a single button’s appearance—as the authoritative result.
How to turn the Workspace control back on
- Open Gmail on a computer.
- Select Settings, then See all settings.
- In General, open Google Workspace smart features.
- Select Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Turn Smart features in Google Workspace on.
- Select Save.
Re-enabling the control restores the Workspace experiences governed by it, subject to your account’s eligibility, language, country, administrator policies, and Google’s rollout status. If the feature does not return, sign out and back in, reload Gmail, and check the account and availability conditions below.
How to manage Gmail, Chat, and Meet smart features separately
If your goal is to change Gmail personalization rather than Gemini in Workspace, use the separate control in Gmail’s General settings.

- Open Gmail and select Settings → See all settings.
- On the General tab, find Smart features.
- Change Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.
- Save the change if Gmail asks you to do so.
Google lists automatic email categorization, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and summary cards as examples governed by this setting. Do not use this switch as a guaranteed way to remove Help me write: Google’s current help does not establish that it is a dedicated control for that feature.
Changes apply across devices and apps where you are signed in, although Google notes that a change made on a computer may not appear immediately in a mobile app. If the app shows no notification of the change, update the app and check again. Also allow time for an account change to propagate before concluding that the setting failed.
How to use Help me write when it is available
Help me write can generate a first draft from a request, then revise it with a more specific instruction or one of Google’s tone controls. Treat the output as a draft, not as verified communication.
- In Gmail, select Compose, open a reply, or open an existing draft.
- Enter any context you already know, or leave the body blank if you want the feature to create the initial text.
- At the bottom of the compose window, use the prompt bar. If it is not visible, select Help me write to reveal it.
- Describe what you want and select Create.
- Review the generated draft for accuracy, tone, names, dates, attachments, promises, and confidential information.
- Refine it by entering a follow-up instruction or selecting Formalize, Friendly, or Shorten.
- Insert the version you approve into the message, make any manual corrections, and only then send it.
Prompts that give the feature useful context
Google recommends specifying the recipient, the topic or action, and the desired tone. If a factual answer depends on an existing message or file, refer to that relevant context rather than asking for an unsupported guess. For example, a request such as “Write a concise, friendly reply to the customer confirming the Tuesday delivery and asking for the gate code” gives the feature a recipient, action, facts, and tone to work with.

Do not paste secrets, regulated information, or details you are not authorized to process.
Google cautions that Workspace with Gemini is “constantly learning and may not be able to support your request.” Generated suggestions can also be inaccurate or inappropriate. Verify every material detail before inserting or sending the text.
Why Help me write may be missing
The Workspace smart-feature control is off
Check General → Google Workspace smart features → Manage Workspace smart feature settings and turn the control on. Save, reload Gmail, and open a new compose window.

You are looking for an old or incorrect setting
Current Google instructions place the relevant control under General and Google Workspace smart features. Advice that tells you to use an old Advanced tab or to treat Smart Compose as the Help me write switch does not match the current documented route.
Your account is not eligible
Availability depends on account type, plan, country or territory, language, platform, and rollout. A missing control or prompt can therefore be an eligibility issue rather than a browser fault.
A mobile app has not synchronized the change
Google says computer changes may not immediately show in a mobile app. Update Gmail from the device’s app store, restart the app, and verify that you are signed in to the same account. Check the web version as a comparison; if the web account is eligible and enabled but mobile is not, the issue may be staged mobile availability.
An administrator controls the account
For a managed Google Workspace account, an administrator or organizational policy may determine which Gemini and smart features are available. If the setting is absent or locked, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing personal Gmail preferences. An administrator may also disable access even when the plan itself is eligible.
The browser is showing stale account data
Confirm the profile and Gmail address, reload the page, and test a private window only after checking that you can sign in safely. Avoid changing several smart-feature switches at once; changing one setting at a time makes the result easier to identify.
Eligibility and availability
Google’s current Gmail feature information lists Help me write for eligible Google AI plans and eligible Google Workspace plans. It also lists Web, iOS, and Android availability and the following supported languages:
- English
- French
- German
- Italian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Portuguese
- Spanish
For personal Gmail accounts, Google’s feature table identifies availability in those languages in the United States. Google says it is gradually expanding country and territory availability, so the same account type may show different access in another region or during a staged rollout. Feature availability can also change after Google updates its plan or product documentation.

Eligibility to use Help me write is not a requirement for turning it off. You can manage the documented Workspace smart-feature control without subscribing to a Google AI plan. Conversely, having an eligible plan does not guarantee that every account sees the feature immediately.
Privacy and data-setting implications
Google describes the Workspace smart-feature setting as controlling the use of Workspace content and activity to provide smart features across Workspace, with Gemini in Workspace among the examples. While the relevant setting is on, content can be used to provide the associated smart features.

Google says that turning the setting off stops future use for those features and stops active processing to improve the relevant features going forward. It also states that learnings already developed may persist. Therefore, do not interpret the switch as a request to erase historical data, delete prior model learnings, or change every Google data-handling practice.
The Gmail, Chat, and Meet control has a different purpose: it governs personalization in those apps. The separate “other Google products” control governs personalization outside that group. Turning off one category does not automatically turn off the other two.
Google states that smart-feature settings are off by default for residents of the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. That describes the default for these settings; it is not a guarantee that every AI feature is unavailable or that all processing is disabled in those regions.
A practical decision guide
- You want Gemini and Help me write unavailable in Workspace: turn off Smart features in Google Workspace, understanding that the change affects the broader list of Workspace experiences.
- You want to stop Smart Compose, Smart Reply, categorization, or summary cards: use Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.
- You want to change personalization in other Google products: manage the separate “other Google products” control.
- You only want to prevent one generated sentence from being sent: leave the setting alone, review the draft, and delete or edit the suggestion before sending.
- You cannot find either control: check that you are in Gmail on the web, confirm the account, look under General, and consider eligibility or administrator restrictions.
- You share a computer: verify the active account before changing anything, then sign out or switch profiles so another user’s settings are not mistaken for yours.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Confusing Smart Compose with Help me write: they are different experiences, and Google places them under different documented controls.
- Assuming one switch affects only Gmail: the Workspace control is intentionally broader and can affect experiences across Workspace products.
- Forgetting to save: Gmail may require the Save button after you leave the nested control. Navigate away only after the change is saved.
- Testing in the wrong account: browser profiles and multiple signed-in accounts can make a feature appear enabled or disabled unexpectedly.
- Treating generated text as verified: check facts, names, dates, commitments, tone, and sensitive content before sending.

Google’s current help documents the broader Workspace control and the separate Gmail, Chat, and Meet control, but it does not document a switch that removes only the Help me write entry point while leaving every other Gemini Workspace experience untouched. It also does not promise identical availability for every account, country, language, device, or rollout stage.
Use the broad Workspace switch only when its wider consequences are acceptable. If you need a narrower result, the documented settings do not provide a guaranteed Help me write-only option; your practical choices are to leave the feature enabled and ignore it, remove individual drafts, or ask a Workspace administrator about account-level policy.
