Android has three separate caller-ID controls: the information shown for an incoming call, a spoken announcement of that caller’s name or number, and whether your own number is presented when you call someone else. On phones using Google’s Phone app, incoming labels are controlled at Phone → More options → Settings → Caller ID and spam → See caller ID & spam. Spoken announcements are at Phone → More options → Settings → Caller ID announcement. Hiding your outgoing number is a different, carrier-dependent setting, commonly found in Samsung Phone under supplementary call settings.
First identify which caller-ID behavior you want to change
The phrase “caller name display” can describe different events. Changing one does not automatically change the others. Use this table to choose the right setting before opening your Phone app.

Menu labels differ among Google Phone, Samsung Phone, Android releases, carriers, and countries. If a path below is not present, first determine which Phone app handles calls on your device, then look for the equivalent caller-ID or supplementary-settings entry.

Turn incoming caller-name and spam labels on or off in Google Phone
Google’s Phone app combines business identification and potential-spam warnings in one switch. This is the setting to use when you want to stop seeing names or labels attached to incoming numbers, or when you want those labels back.

Use the exact Google Phone path
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options, usually the three-dot menu.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Caller ID and spam.
- Turn See caller ID & spam on to identify businesses and possible spam callers, or off to stop those identifications and warnings.
The switch affects incoming-call identification. With it enabled, Google says the app can identify businesses and potential spam callers. With it disabled, the number can still appear and your contacts can still be recognized locally, but the Google-provided caller-ID and spam labels may no longer be shown.
What the switch means for privacy
Google states that caller-ID and spam protection may require sending information about calls to Google. That data-sharing consideration is separate from whether your own number is visible when you call someone. If reducing call-information sharing is more important to you than automatic business and spam labels, leave See caller ID & spam off. If warnings about likely spam are more useful, keep it on.
If the Google setting is missing
- Check that Google Phone, rather than another dialer, is the default Phone app.
- Install available updates for the Phone app and Android, then reopen the settings.
- Consider regional, carrier, and device-build limits. Google does not make this feature available in every configuration.
- On a dual-SIM phone, inspect the settings associated with the line that receives the call; policies can differ between SIMs.
Make Android announce a caller’s name or number aloud
A spoken announcement is independent of the text label on the screen. Use this feature when you want the phone to read the caller’s name or number, for example while the phone is not in view.
Choose an announcement mode in Google Phone
- Open Phone.
- Tap More options, then Settings.
- Open Caller ID announcement.
- Tap Announce caller ID.
- Select one of the available modes: Always, Only when using a headset, or Never.
Google’s instruction is: “To announce a caller’s name or number, turn on Caller ID announcement.” The Always choice speaks the announcement without requiring a headset. Only when using a headset limits it to calls received while a headset is connected. Never disables spoken announcements while leaving other caller-ID behavior unchanged.

Requirements and practical limits
- The announcement depends on a text-to-speech language supported by the phone. If the option is unavailable or silent, check the device’s text-to-speech language settings.
- The headset-only choice requires a connected headset at the time of the call.
- Changing this setting does not turn incoming on-screen identification on or off.
- It also does not determine what the recipient sees when you make an outgoing call.
Show or hide caller ID on a Samsung Galaxy
Samsung Galaxy phones commonly use Samsung’s Phone app, whose labels and layout differ from Google’s. Samsung notes that older Android versions can use different steps, and carrier or regional policies can change which choices are offered.
Find the caller-ID control
- Open Samsung’s Phone app.
- Tap More options.
- Open Settings (on some releases this is called Call settings).
- Tap More or Supplementary settings.
- Look for the caller-ID or number-display control.
Depending on the Galaxy model, Android version, carrier, and country, the available choices can include showing your number, hiding it, or using the network default. Select the choice that matches your goal, then make a test call to a trusted person who can tell you exactly what appeared.
When you want incoming identification on a Galaxy
Samsung’s incoming caller-identification controls may be presented under a caller-ID, spam-protection, or related call-settings label rather than Google’s exact Caller ID and spam wording. Read the description beside each switch: a control that identifies incoming numbers is not the same as one that controls your number on outgoing calls. If you cannot find an incoming-identification option, confirm the default Phone app and check for updates before assuming the phone cannot provide it.

When you want your own number hidden on a Galaxy
Use the control under More or Supplementary settings, not the Google-style incoming spam switch. If the menu offers Show number, Hide number, and Network default, choose Hide number for private outgoing calls or Show number to present it. Network default lets the carrier’s policy decide. Some carriers remove one or more choices, so the setting may be unavailable even though the Phone app has the menu.

Control your outgoing caller ID on other Android phones
There is no single Android-wide path for hiding the number you present to other people. The carrier and the dialer determine whether the option exists. The Google Phone switch named See caller ID & spam does not control outgoing number presentation.
A reliable way to locate the setting
- Open the Phone app that is set as default.
- Open More options and then Settings.
- Search within call settings for terms such as caller ID, additional settings, supplementary settings, or calling accounts.
- Open the SIM or calling account you use for outgoing calls.
- Choose the available presentation option, such as showing your number, hiding it, or using the network default.
- Place a test call to someone who does not already have your number saved, because a saved contact can display its own label.
If none of these entries exists, contact the carrier that provides the line. Carrier policy can determine whether caller-ID blocking is permitted, whether it applies to every call or only selected calls, and which network default is used.
Dual-SIM considerations
On a dual-SIM device, caller-ID presentation is usually associated with the selected line or calling account. Inspect the settings for the active SIM and repeat the check for the other line if both are used. A choice applied to one SIM may not change the other.

Hiding your outgoing number does not guarantee that every recipient sees a blank screen. The displayed name can come from several places outside the handset setting:

- The recipient may have your number saved in contacts, so their phone displays their own contact label.
- The carrier may supply a network caller-ID name or apply its own privacy rules.
- A business caller-ID service or database may associate a name with the number.
- The call may be routed through a service that applies a caller-ID label independently of your Android menu.
For a meaningful test, call a trusted person who does not have your number stored, ask what appeared, and note which SIM placed the call. If that person still sees a name or number after you selected a hiding option, the result is likely being supplied by the recipient’s contacts, a carrier, or a caller-ID database rather than by the incoming-identification switch on your phone.

The menu path does not match
Different Phone apps and Android versions use different labels. Compare the icon and app name shown as the default dialer, then follow that app’s settings. On Samsung, try both Call settings and Settings, followed by More or Supplementary settings. On Google Phone, look specifically for Caller ID and spam and Caller ID announcement.
“See caller ID & spam” is unavailable
The feature may not be supported in your country, device build, carrier configuration, or selected dialer. Verify the default Phone app, update it, and check the setting for the SIM receiving calls. If the entry remains absent, use the phone’s available local caller-ID controls or the carrier’s support channel; do not expect an outgoing-number setting to replace it.

The phone announces nothing
- Confirm that Announce caller ID is set to Always or Only when using a headset, as intended.
- For headset-only mode, connect the headset before the call arrives.
- Check that a supported text-to-speech language is installed and selected.
- Raise media or accessibility speech volume if the announcement is enabled but inaudible.
Spam labels disappeared after you changed a setting
Turning off See caller ID & spam can remove Google’s incoming business and possible-spam identifications. It does not erase contacts or prevent a carrier or another service from supplying a label. Turn the switch back on if you want those Google-provided warnings again.

Your number is still visible when you call
Check that you changed the outgoing caller-ID control for the correct SIM or calling account. The incoming Google switch cannot hide your number. If the outgoing option is missing or the network ignores it, carrier policy controls the result.
A name appears even though you turned off incoming identification
The recipient-side explanations above apply in reverse as well: a contact label, carrier record, or business caller-ID service can still identify a number. The incoming-identification switch mainly controls the labels supplied by the Phone app; it cannot rewrite another person’s contacts or external database.

Privacy and caller-identification trade-offs
Incoming identification is useful because it can distinguish a business or warn about a possible spam call before you answer. The trade-off is that Google says using caller-ID and spam protection may send information about calls to Google. Decide based on whether automated identification or minimizing that data sharing matters more to you.
Outgoing caller-ID privacy is a separate decision. Hiding your number can prevent the person you call from seeing it directly, but it does not remove contact records, carrier records, or external caller-ID databases. Conversely, showing your number can make it easier for trusted contacts to recognize you while still leaving incoming spam identification under its own setting.
