To turn automatic clock setting off, open your device’s date-and-time settings, switch off the automatic date/time control, and then enter the date, time, or time zone manually. To restore synchronization, turn the automatic control back on. The exact path differs by platform, and automatic time and automatic time-zone selection are often separate controls.

Device Automatic date/time path Manual change Separate time-zone control
iPhone Settings > General > Date & Time Turn off Set Automatically, then edit the time zone or displayed date Yes; Time Zone and location-based detection
Android Clock > More > Settings > Change date and time Turn off the device’s automatic setting, then choose date, time, or zone Yes; Automatic time zone
Windows 10/11 Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time Turn off Set time automatically, then select Change Yes; Set time zone automatically
Mac Apple menu > System Settings > General > Date & Time Turn off Set time and date automatically, select Set, and enter values Yes; Set time zone automatically using your current location

Automatic date and time versus automatic time zone

There are usually two independent decisions behind the clock shown on a phone or computer:

  • Automatic date and time obtains the clock value from a network, carrier, or time server.
  • Automatic time zone determines which regional offset and daylight-saving rules apply.

A device can therefore show the right minutes but the wrong local hour if its time zone is incorrect. Conversely, a correct zone with automatic synchronization disabled can still drift. When diagnosing a wrong clock, check both controls rather than changing only the displayed time.

Network access is commonly needed for automatic synchronization. Location services may be needed for automatic zone detection, especially on mobile devices. Carrier or regional rules, a Screen Time restriction, or a workplace-management profile can prevent a control from being changed. Android labels and locations vary more by manufacturer and software version than the Apple and Microsoft interfaces described here.

Turn automatic date and time on or off on an iPhone

Turn automatic setting on

  1. Connect the iPhone to the internet.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Tap General, then Date & Time.
  4. Turn on Set Automatically.

With this enabled, the iPhone obtains the date and time and applies the relevant time zone. A network connection is part of Apple’s current procedure; an offline phone may not be able to correct itself immediately.

Turn automatic setting off and edit the clock

  1. Go to Settings > General > Date & Time.
  2. Turn Set Automatically off.
  3. Tap Time Zone and select a city if the regional zone is wrong.
  4. To change the calendar date or clock, tap the displayed date and time and enter the required values.

Manual editing is available only after automatic setting is disabled. Changing the time zone is preferable to manually adding or subtracting hours when the date is correct, because the zone also controls daylight-saving behavior.

Make iPhone time-zone detection use your location

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security.
  2. Tap Location Services.
  3. Scroll to System Services.
  4. Turn on Setting Time Zone.

This allows location-based zone detection when the iPhone is traveling or when the network’s regional information is insufficient. Location permission and network access are separate from the Set Automatically switch, so both may need to be available for hands-off updates.

Why Set Automatically is dimmed or unavailable

  • Carrier or regional limitation: Some carriers or regions do not permit the phone to change the setting.
  • Screen Time passcode: A restriction can lock date and time changes.
  • Corporate management: A configuration or management profile can enforce the clock.
  • Connectivity or location: The phone may not have the network or location access required for automatic detection.

If the switch is unavailable, check those conditions before repeatedly changing the date. On a managed iPhone, the organization that installed the profile may be the only party able to release the setting.

Turn automatic date and time on or off on Android

Open the date-and-time controls

  1. Open the Clock app.
  2. Tap More (often shown as three dots).
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Choose Change date and time.

Google documents this route, but manufacturers can move the same controls into a main Settings app or rename them. If the route is different, use the Settings search field and search for date and time, automatic date and time, or time zone.

Enable network-provided time

  1. Open the Change date and time screen.
  2. Turn on Automatic date and time, or the manufacturer’s equivalent such as Set automatically.
  3. If offered, leave the network-provided option selected so the phone can synchronize its clock.

The wording and placement can differ by Android version and manufacturer. Some devices expose a network-provided time option separately from the time-zone option.

Enable automatic time-zone detection

  1. On the same date-and-time screen, find Automatic time zone.
  2. Turn it on.
  3. If Android offers a location-based method, allow the required location access.

Some phones use location to identify the zone. A Wi-Fi-only tablet may show different choices because it lacks cellular network information, so its automatic controls can be more limited than those on a phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set an Android clock manually

  1. Return to Clock > More > Settings > Change date and time, or open the equivalent Settings page found through search.
  2. Turn off Automatic date and time or Set automatically.
  3. Tap the date, time, or time-zone field and enter the desired value.
  4. Save or confirm if your manufacturer’s interface provides a confirmation button.

If the date and time fields cannot be edited, automation is still enabled or a device policy is enforcing it. Android’s manufacturer variation means that a label such as Use network-provided time may serve the same purpose as Automatic date and time.

Turn automatic date and time on or off in Windows 10 and Windows 11

Turn automatic clock synchronization on

  1. Open the Start menu and select Settings.
  2. Choose Time & language.
  3. Open Date & time.
  4. Turn on Set time automatically.

Microsoft uses this page for both Windows 10 and Windows 11, although the surrounding Settings design differs slightly between releases. With the switch enabled, Windows can synchronize the clock instead of relying on a manually entered value.

Set the Windows clock manually

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Turn Set time automatically off.
  3. Find the date-and-time control and select Change.
  4. Enter the date and time, then confirm the change.

The Change button is intended for manual entry and may be unavailable while automatic synchronization is active.

Control Windows time-zone and daylight-saving behavior

  1. Remain on Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Turn Set time zone automatically on when Windows should determine the zone.
  3. If automatic zone handling is off, select the appropriate time zone manually.
  4. Use Adjust for daylight saving time automatically when that option is available and you want Windows to apply seasonal clock changes.

The daylight-saving control is presented when automatic time-zone handling is off. A manually selected zone and daylight-saving preference should match the region where the PC is being used; otherwise calendar entries, meetings, and file times can appear shifted.

Turn automatic date and time on or off on a Mac

Turn automatic date and time on

  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Choose General, then Date & Time.
  4. Turn on Set time and date automatically.
  5. If macOS asks for a server, choose a network time server.

Apple describes this as using a network time server. The Mac needs network access to obtain a current value, and the selected server must be reachable for synchronization to work.

Turn on location-based time-zone selection

  1. Stay in Apple menu > System Settings > General > Date & Time.
  2. Turn on Set time zone automatically using your current location.
  3. Allow location access if macOS requests it.

This setting controls the regional zone, not the basic network clock value. Both automatic options can be enabled for a Mac that should follow travel and daylight-saving changes without manual intervention.

Set the Mac clock manually

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Date & Time.
  2. Turn off Set time and date automatically.
  3. Click Set.
  4. Enter the date and time.
  5. Click Set again to apply the value.

Apple notes that correct time matters because email, message, and file timestamps depend on it. A deliberate manual setting can be useful for testing or for an isolated system, but it changes the recorded time of new activity.

Why your time zone is wrong even when the clock is synchronized

A synchronized clock can still be displayed in the wrong local zone. The most common causes are a disabled location service, an incorrect manually selected zone, travel between regions, a carrier or network that supplies incomplete regional data, or a policy that prevents changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the zone before changing the time

  1. Open the platform’s date-and-time page listed above.
  2. Read the current time zone or city, not just the hour and minutes.
  3. If the zone is wrong, enable the platform’s automatic zone control and any required location permission.
  4. If automatic detection is unavailable, select the correct city or regional zone manually.
  5. Check the displayed date as well as the time; a zone change near midnight can move the calendar date.

Do not compensate for a wrong zone by manually adding hours while leaving the wrong zone selected. That creates a clock value that may look right temporarily but leaves calendar, daylight-saving, and timestamp rules inconsistent.

What to check when an automatic switch is missing or greyed out

Use this sequence before assuming the device is defective:

  1. Verify connectivity. Connect to a working Wi-Fi or cellular network and retry the automatic setting.
  2. Check location access. For location-based zone detection, enable the platform’s location service and its time-zone permission.
  3. Search the settings. On Android in particular, manufacturer software can move the control; search for “date and time” instead of following a generic menu path.
  4. Review restrictions. On iPhone, check Screen Time and any corporate management profile. On computers and managed Android devices, an administrator may enforce the clock.
  5. Install available system updates. Interface labels and fixes can change with an operating-system update.
  6. Check carrier or regional limits. iPhone may dim the setting because of carrier or region rules, and network-provided time may not be available in every environment.
  7. Restart after correcting permissions. A restart can make a newly granted location or management setting appear, but it cannot override an administrator policy.

If the control remains unavailable after these checks, use the device’s administrator, carrier, or workplace support channel rather than repeatedly forcing a manual clock value.

Platform comparison: controls, dependencies, and restrictions

Platform Automatic clock control Automatic zone control Main dependency Common lockout Manual entry prerequisite
iPhone Set Automatically Time Zone and Setting Time Zone under Location Services Internet; location for location-based detection Carrier/region limits, Screen Time, or management profile Set Automatically must be off
Android Automatic date and time or Set automatically Automatic time zone Network and, on some devices, location Manufacturer variation or device policy Automatic control must be off
Windows 10/11 Set time automatically Set time zone automatically Network synchronization; location for automatic zone detection where used Organization policy or unavailable synchronization Set time automatically must be off
Mac Set time and date automatically Set time zone automatically using your current location Network time server and location Management settings or unavailable permissions Automatic date/time must be off

Android has the widest variation in menu names because manufacturers customize Settings. Apple and Microsoft publish more consistent labels, but both can still restrict changes through regional, account, or management controls.

When manual date or time changes are appropriate

Manual control is useful for a short diagnostic test, an offline device that cannot reach a time source, or a controlled software test that requires a known clock value. It is not a good permanent setting for an everyday phone or computer connected to services that expect current time.

  • Authentication: Security credentials and time-limited sign-ins can fail when the device clock is far from network time.
  • Messages and email: Incorrect clocks can place new or received items out of chronological order.
  • Files and backups: File timestamps and backup schedules can be misleading.
  • Calendars and reminders: Events may appear at the wrong local hour after a manual zone or clock change.
  • Daylight-saving transitions: A manually entered offset may not follow a regional rule change.

After the test or offline period, re-enable automatic date and time and automatic time-zone selection where appropriate. That lets the device return to network or location-based corrections instead of preserving a temporary value.

A reliable cross-platform procedure

When you need to change a clock on any of these systems, use the following order:

  1. Identify the problem. Decide whether the error is the clock value, the time zone, or both.
  2. Open the platform-specific date-and-time page. Use the paths in this guide; on Android, use Settings search if the labels differ.
  3. Disable only the automation you need to override. Turn off automatic date/time for a manual clock value, or change the time zone control when only the region is wrong.
  4. Enter or select the value. Choose a city or zone rather than applying a guessed hour offset whenever possible.
  5. Verify dependent data. Check the displayed date, calendar events, a recent message timestamp, and a file timestamp if accuracy is important.
  6. Restore automation. Once the reason for manual control has ended, turn automatic date/time and automatic zone detection back on as needed.

This order prevents the most common mistake: changing the hour to hide a time-zone error and then leaving the device with inconsistent regional rules.
