Yes—if the phone supports wired external video, you can use it as the center of a desktop-style Android gaming station. Connect it to a monitor or TV, add keyboard, mouse or controller input, and run compatible Android games in a larger workspace. The phone still runs Android; it does not become a Windows gaming computer.

To play demanding PC games, use the phone as a streaming client for a separate gaming PC. In that arrangement, the PC renders the game and the Android phone receives the video and sends your controls.

What an old Android phone can—and cannot—become

A suitable Android phone can replace several parts of a basic gaming setup: it can run the game, provide the operating system, and output a display signal. With a monitor, keyboard, mouse and optional controller, the result can feel like a compact desktop station.

That description has an important limit. External-display support is not universal, and a USB-C charging port does not automatically carry video. Android may mirror the phone screen, offer a separate desktop session, or provide no wired display output at all, depending on the exact model and software. Google Android Help warns that connected-display support “isn’t available on all devices and the experience may vary.”

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

There are therefore two different projects:

Route What runs the game What the phone does Main constraints
Android gaming on an external display The Android phone Runs the Android game and sends a desktop-style or mirrored picture to the display Phone model, video output, desktop-mode support, game compatibility and controls
PC game streaming A separate gaming PC Receives the stream and sends controller, keyboard or mouse input The host PC must be available, and network quality affects responsiveness

Decide which route you want before buying an adapter. A hub cannot add video output that the phone’s hardware does not support.

Check the phone before spending money

1. Record the exact model and software

Open Settings and note the full model number, Android version and, where applicable, the manufacturer’s interface version such as One UI. “Old Android phone” is not a useful compatibility category: two phones released in the same year can have different display hardware and desktop features.

Search the manufacturer’s current support documentation for that exact model. Samsung’s current support guidance should take priority over older lists hosted on developer pages. Do not treat a similar model name, regional variant or a newer successor as proof that your handset is supported.

2. Verify wired video output

Look specifically for documentation describing USB-C video output, DisplayPort over USB-C, HDMI adapters or a desktop dock. A port that charges and transfers files may still lack the circuitry required for an external display.

For supported Galaxy phones, Samsung documents connecting through a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or a DeX dock. The adapter or dock is only appropriate after the handset itself has been confirmed as compatible. If the manufacturer does not document wired video for your model, assume a normal USB-C-to-HDMI cable will not solve the problem.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

3. Find out whether you get mirroring or a desktop session

Screen mirroring duplicates the phone’s normal interface. A desktop mode creates a layout intended for a larger display, usually with windows, a taskbar or desktop controls. Some phones provide one option, some provide both, and some provide neither.

On supported Galaxy devices, Samsung DeX supplies the desktop-style environment. Android’s connected-display behavior varies by device, so look in Settings, Connected devices, display settings or quick settings for the option documented for your model. Do not assume that a mirrored screen will offer windowed multitasking.

4. Confirm the games and controls

Check each game’s Android listing for operating-system requirements, controller support and account requirements. A desktop display does not convert a touch-only game into a keyboard-and-mouse title. Some games work best with touch input, some accept Bluetooth or USB controllers, and others recognize keyboard and mouse input inconsistently.

The available evidence does not establish universal controller compatibility or a consistent performance level across old phones. Treat every game, adapter and input device as a separate compatibility check.

Hardware for the station

Display

Use an HDMI monitor or television with an input that matches the adapter or dock. The display does not need special gaming features for turn-based or casual games, but a fast-response display can make action games feel better. Your phone’s output limits resolution and refresh behavior; do not buy a high-refresh display expecting the phone to drive it at that rate.

USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or powered hub

A simple USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is the least complicated choice when you only need video. A USB-C HDMI hub with power-delivery passthrough is more useful when you want to charge the phone while connecting USB accessories. A hub may also provide USB-A ports for wired keyboard, mouse or controller input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that the phone supports wired video before ordering.
  • Check the adapter’s connector type and the display’s input.
  • Verify the hub’s power-delivery requirements and whether your charger can supply them.
  • Use a cable long enough to keep the phone and hub away from strain or heat.

Keyboard, mouse and controller

Keyboard and mouse input can be wired through a hub or paired over Bluetooth. Samsung documents both methods for DeX and also supports using the phone itself as a touchpad. That touchpad option lets you test the setup without immediately buying a mouse.

A game controller is optional and useful only for games that support it. Pair it through the phone’s Bluetooth settings or connect it by USB when the hub and game support that arrangement. Keep a touch-based fallback available while testing.

Power, cooling and network

External display use, charging and gaming can warm an older phone. Place it on a hard, ventilated surface, avoid covering its vents and remove a thick case if it traps heat. If the phone supports charging through the hub, connect a reliable charger before a long session rather than waiting for the battery to become low.

Network equipment matters only for streaming, not for a game that runs locally on the phone. For streaming, connect the host PC and phone to the same home network during setup. A wired connection for the host is often practical, while the phone can use Wi-Fi if coverage is strong where you play.

Set up Android gaming on a monitor

  1. Back up the phone and update it. Install the latest updates offered for the exact model, remove unnecessary applications and make sure you know the screen lock or account credentials needed after a restart.
  2. Connect the display path. Plug the USB-C adapter or hub into the phone, connect HDMI to the monitor or TV, and select the correct display input. If the phone has a documented DeX dock workflow, follow that model-specific procedure instead of improvising.
  3. Choose the display behavior. Accept the desktop mode prompt if the phone offers one. If Android only mirrors the screen, open display or quick settings and look for the supported desktop-display control. If no external display is detected, disconnect the adapter and recheck compatibility before changing settings.
  4. Connect input devices. Pair a Bluetooth keyboard, mouse or controller under Settings and Connected devices, or plug USB devices into the hub. Test pointer movement, typing and controller buttons on the desktop before launching a game.
  5. Arrange the workspace. Set the monitor’s input, adjust Android display scaling if available, and place the phone where its cable and cooling airflow are not stressed. Use the phone as a DeX touchpad when you have no mouse.
  6. Install or open a game. Use the Play Store or the game’s existing installation, sign in, and check its control settings. Start with a title known to run on the phone rather than assuming every Android game supports a desktop window.
  7. Set conservative graphics options. Begin with the game’s default or lower preset, then raise resolution or effects only if temperatures, frame pacing and controls remain acceptable. There is no universal frame-rate figure for unspecified phone models.
  8. Test a complete session. Play for at least several minutes with audio, input, charging and display connected. Watch for heat, battery drain, disconnections or an on-screen message that the accessory is drawing too much power.

Using a supported desktop mode

A desktop mode is more useful than simple mirroring when you want to switch between a game, chat and settings. On supported Galaxy hardware, DeX provides a PC-like environment, and Samsung documents keyboard, mouse and touchpad input options.

The exact controls depend on the phone. Look for window maximize, minimize and close buttons, an app launcher and notification controls. Some games remain full-screen even in a desktop session. Others open in a resizable window but still expect touch gestures; use the game’s own control menu rather than forcing a keyboard mapping it does not support.

If the phone starts mirroring instead of the desktop session, first confirm that the model supports the desktop mode. Then check the phone’s display or quick-settings controls while the HDMI connection is active. A missing toggle is usually a support limitation, not a defective monitor.

Play PC games by streaming them to the phone

Streaming is the practical way to use an old phone with a library of PC games, but the phone is not doing the PC game’s rendering. The separate computer must stay powered on, signed in and able to run the game.

Moonlight with Sunshine

Moonlight is an Android streaming client. Its documented setup uses Sunshine as the streaming host on the gaming PC. Install and configure Sunshine on the host, install Moonlight on the phone, and keep both devices on the same network for initial pairing.

  1. Install the host software on the gaming PC and make sure the PC can launch the games locally.
  2. Start the host service and note any pairing code or approval prompt it displays.
  3. Open Moonlight on the Android phone and select the discovered computer, or add the host address if discovery does not find it.
  4. Enter the pairing code on the host when prompted, then choose a game from the available list.
  5. Connect your controller or keyboard and mouse to the phone, and test navigation before launching a demanding title.
  6. If the picture stutters, reduce the stream resolution or bitrate in the client and test the network before blaming the phone’s display adapter.

Moonlight and Sunshine are software components for a host-and-client system; they do not remove the requirement for a capable gaming PC or a suitable home network.

Steam Link

Steam Link uses a home PC running Steam as the host. Install the Android app, leave Steam running on the computer, and place the phone on the same network during setup. Follow the app’s pairing prompt, enter the displayed code on the PC, and launch a game from the Steam library once the connection test succeeds.

Because the phone receives compressed video, network conditions affect latency and image quality. A game can run smoothly on the host while still feeling delayed on the phone if the wireless signal is weak or the route between devices is congested.

Streaming controls and display output

You can play on the phone itself, mirror the stream to an external display, or use the phone’s supported desktop-display mode. Connecting the monitor does not move rendering to the phone. Keep the phone powered and avoid placing the Wi-Fi antenna behind large metal objects or inside a closed cabinet.

Performance limits you should expect

  • Model variation: Processor, graphics hardware, memory, Android version and video-output circuitry differ widely among phones that look similar.
  • Thermal throttling: A phone may reduce performance after extended heat exposure. A short successful test does not guarantee a long session at the same speed.
  • Game support: Android games may require touch, a specific operating-system version, Google services or a controller profile that desktop mode cannot provide.
  • Display behavior: Mirroring and desktop mode are different experiences. A monitor can show the phone without providing resizable windows.
  • Streaming delay: Host rendering, encoding, Wi-Fi, decoding and controller input all add possible latency. Local Android play avoids the network portion but remains limited by the phone.
  • Power draw: HDMI output, radio activity and gaming can consume more power than ordinary phone use. Charging through a compatible hub is preferable for stationary sessions.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to try
No picture on the monitor The phone lacks wired video support, the display input is wrong, or the adapter is incompatible. Confirm the exact model’s documentation, select the correct HDMI input, reseat both ends and test the adapter with a known-supported phone if available. Do not assume the USB-C connector guarantees video.
Only a mirrored screen appears The phone supports mirroring but not a separate desktop session, or desktop mode is not enabled. Check display and quick-settings controls while connected. If the model is not documented as supporting desktop mode, use mirroring or choose a different phone.
Keyboard or mouse is not detected The hub lacks power, Bluetooth pairing failed, or the game ignores that input type. Pair the device again, connect it directly or through a powered hub, test it in Android settings, then check the game’s own control options.
The phone disconnects while charging The hub or charger cannot provide the required power, or the cable is faulty. Use a compatible power-delivery charger, remove unnecessary USB devices and replace the cable. Verify the hub’s power specifications.
Streaming host is not found The PC and phone are on different networks, the host service is stopped, or firewall rules block discovery. Put both devices on the same home network, start Sunshine or Steam, approve the application in the PC firewall and add the host address manually if the client permits it.
Stream video is delayed or pixelated Wireless congestion, weak signal, excessive stream settings or host overload. Move closer to the access point, use a wired host connection, lower resolution or bitrate and close other network-heavy applications.
The game runs briefly, then slows down Heat-related throttling, low battery or background activity. Improve airflow, connect power, close background apps and lower the game’s graphics settings.

Security and reliability checks

  • Install games and streaming clients from their official distribution channels, and review requested permissions before accepting them.
  • Keep Android, the desktop-mode software and the host PC updated within the support offered for each device.
  • Pair streaming clients only on a network you control. Do not expose a game-streaming host directly to the public internet just to avoid local pairing.
  • Use a separate user profile or remove saved accounts if the phone will be shared.
  • Stop charging if the battery swells, the connector becomes unusually hot or the phone repeatedly shuts down.

Which approach is right for you?

  • Choose local Android gaming when the phone has documented wired video output, supports the games you want and you do not own a separate gaming PC.
  • Choose PC streaming when you already have a gaming PC and accept that network quality, host availability and input delay determine the experience.
  • Use mirroring only when the phone can output video but has no supported desktop mode; it is simpler, but less suited to windowed multitasking.
  • Stop before buying accessories when the exact phone model has no documented wired video support. A more expensive hub cannot compensate for missing hardware.

The most dependable build is therefore model-first: verify wired video and desktop-mode support, select the simplest compatible adapter, add controls only after testing, and treat PC gaming as a separate streaming project that still requires a gaming computer.
