An AI-generated layout is a starting point, not proof that you have a production-ready website. To make it work, choose how you will maintain and publish it—editable code or a managed visual platform—then connect real content and data, define what every control does, check responsive layouts, and test the complete experience before launch.

First choose how you want to maintain the site

The right workflow depends less on how the design was generated than on what you need to own and maintain afterward. A design can be translated into code for a project, or refined and published inside a visual website platform. Those outcomes are not interchangeable: some tools provide editable code or repository options, while others publish a live site in a managed platform without giving you a downloadable static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript project.

  • Choose a code-oriented route if the site needs to live in a codebase your team maintains, or if you need to work directly with generated HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Figma documents generating and refining code, with export or publishing options. Confirm that the current plan and workflow provide the export or repository handoff you need.
  • Choose a visual publishing route if you want to refine pages visually and manage publishing, CMS fields, or SEO settings within a platform. Framer describes this kind of workflow, but says its Figma route creates a live React-based website rather than a downloadable static-code folder.
  • Check the starting point before committing if you are considering Webflow. Its Figma plugin converts Figma auto-layout frames and can sync a design system. Its AI site builder is a separate workflow: Webflow says it cannot be applied to a pre-existing site that was not originally built with that AI builder.

In all cases, treat claims about what a tool can generate or import as vendor descriptions, not proof that a specific design will transfer perfectly. Compatibility, the amount of refinement, and the available handoff depend on the workflow and starting files.

Compare the routes by handoff, not by the mockup

Before transferring anything, decide what you expect to receive at the end. A visually similar result may still be the wrong deliverable if you need source code, a CMS, or a managed publishing workflow.

Route What the documented workflow offers What to verify for your project
Figma Make and code generation Figma describes generating a responsive site from a description or existing design/codebase, refining visually or in code, connecting data, testing with real content, and publishing or pushing to a repository. Its code-generation page describes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript generation with code export or publishing options. Whether the current plan and selected workflow support the export, repository push, or publishing option you need; how much code and breakpoint refinement your design requires.
Framer Figma workflow Framer describes importing Figma layers, groups, and structure, then refining layout, breakpoints, interactions, animations, CMS fields, SEO metadata, and publishing a live site. Its documented route is not a static code export. Whether a managed live site meets your handoff and maintenance needs; how much layout and responsive adjustment the imported design needs.
Webflow Figma plugin Webflow documents converting Figma auto-layout frames into Webflow and syncing a design system. Whether your Figma frames use the structure expected by the plugin and whether a conversion workflow fits your site.
Webflow AI site builder Webflow documents an AI site-building workflow for a new site or an existing site originally built with that builder. Eligibility: Webflow says the builder cannot be applied to an existing site that was not originally made with it. Do not assume it imports an arbitrary layout.

The product descriptions do not establish a universal amount of manual work, a guaranteed conversion quality, or a performance advantage for any route. Plan time to inspect the result rather than treating transfer as completion.

Turn the design into a build specification

A screenshot shows appearance at one moment; it does not fully specify how a website behaves. Before implementation, inventory the visible elements and decide what each should do. This prevents a polished-looking page from shipping with controls that are decorative, inconsistent, or disconnected.

  1. List the page regions. Record the header, navigation, main content sections, calls to action, forms, footer, and any repeating cards or content blocks. Note which elements recur across pages.
  2. Assign a purpose to each control. For every button, link, menu, tab, form field, or interactive element, write down the expected result. A navigation item should lead somewhere; a form should have a submission outcome; a menu should open and close in a predictable way.
  3. Identify required data. Mark content that is fixed, such as an introductory paragraph, separately from content that changes or comes from a data source, such as a list of items or CMS-managed entries. Figma’s published workflow specifically includes connecting a backend and testing flows with real content.
  4. Define important states. Where the design implies interaction, specify what the user sees before, during, and after it. For example, note whether a menu starts closed, how a submitted form responds, and what happens when a user follows a navigation link.
  5. Resolve unanswered design decisions. Decide what happens on pages, devices, or interaction states the generated visual does not show. Do not assume the AI’s layout is a complete set of product requirements.

Keep this inventory close to the implementation. It is the reference for deciding whether each feature is actually complete, not merely present in the design.

Build the site in a deliberate sequence

Figma describes a workflow that can begin with a site description or an existing design or codebase, followed by generation, refinement, data connection, testing with real content, and publication. That is a useful order to follow regardless of which route you choose. It keeps decisions about structure and behavior ahead of launch.

1. Start from the best available input

Use the existing design or codebase if it is the intended source of truth; otherwise, describe the site you want to create. Confirm that the chosen route supports that input. For example, a Figma conversion workflow and an AI site builder are different ways to start, and the latter has a stated eligibility limit for existing Webflow sites. Avoid transferring a design into a workflow that cannot accept or maintain the result you need.

2. Generate or transfer, then inspect the structure

After generation or import, check that the page is organized into the intended regions and that repeated elements are handled consistently. Compare the output with the design, but also review whether the structure supports the content and behavior identified in your specification. If you use a code path, review and refine the generated code in the project workflow you intend to maintain. If you use a visual path, inspect and refine the imported page in that platform before publishing.

3. Replace placeholders with approved content

Use the real copy, images, labels, and other material intended for launch. Check that text describes the actual site or service and that image choices fit their placement. Figma warns that generated copy can sound convincing while still being incorrect about what is being built. A finished-looking sentence is not evidence that it is accurate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Connect the data and services the page requires

If a page relies on backend data or a CMS, connect the appropriate source and confirm that the expected content appears in the actual layout. Check how empty, missing, or longer-than-expected content affects the page. A static design cannot demonstrate that data is connected, and a populated preview alone does not show that a user flow works from beginning to end.

  • 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.

5. Implement every interaction in the inventory

Wire navigation, buttons, menus, forms, and other interactive elements to their intended outcomes. Make sure each control behaves consistently with its label and context. If an interaction requires data or a backend, test it with that connection in place. Figma’s guidance specifically puts connecting a backend and testing flows with real content before publishing.

6. Refine the visual system after content and behavior are real

Real text and data can change line lengths, component heights, and page flow. Revisit spacing, alignment, image crops, and control placement after replacing placeholders and connecting content. Figma and Framer describe responsive generation or refinement capabilities, but vendor documentation does not establish that every generated layout is correct at every viewport. Treat the output as something to inspect and adjust.

Review responsive behavior at narrow and wide widths

Responsive review is a separate task from generating or importing a page. A design may look convincing at its original dimensions while becoming difficult to navigate or read at another width. Review more than whether the page fits on screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Navigation: Check that the full navigation remains usable where space permits and that any collapsed version opens, closes, and exposes the expected destinations.
  • Text wrapping: Look for headings, buttons, labels, and paragraphs that wrap awkwardly, become crowded, or disrupt the visual order of the page.
  • Images: Check whether crops preserve the important subject and whether image proportions still work in narrower layouts.
  • Spacing and alignment: Review gaps between sections, cards, and controls. Look for content pressed against the edges or separated so far that its relationship is unclear.
  • Controls: Make sure forms, buttons, menus, and links remain visible and practical to use at each reviewed width.
  • Page flow: Confirm that sections stack in a sensible order and that important content does not become hidden or hard to find.

For each route, inspect the result in the platform or project where it will actually be maintained. Adjust breakpoints and layout behavior there rather than assuming that an imported or generated responsive design needs no further work.

Test the complete experience before publishing

Testing should follow the same user paths the site is meant to support. A successful visual preview does not prove that links, forms, or data flows work. Figma’s described workflow explicitly calls for testing flows with real content before publishing.

  1. Follow each route through the site. Start at the page entry point and use the navigation and calls to action as a visitor would. Confirm that every link reaches the intended destination.
  2. Exercise every form. Enter realistic content, submit it, and inspect the result. Check that the visible response matches the action and that the flow uses its intended backend or data connection.
  3. Open and close interactive elements. Check menus and other controls in each state represented by the design or implementation. Confirm that the result is understandable and that the control remains usable after interaction.
  4. Review real content in context. Read the copy, labels, and data as displayed in the finished layout. Correct inaccurate generated claims, and look for content that overflows or changes the intended hierarchy.
  5. Repeat the visual review at narrow and wide widths. Use the responsive checklist above for the actual pages and states you intend to launch.
  6. Inspect the published destination and handoff. Confirm that the site is published through the intended route and that the people responsible for maintaining it have the access, code, or platform workflow they expect.

Keep a short list of failed checks and fix the underlying issue before launch. If a control has no defined outcome, resolve its purpose rather than publishing it as if it were functional.

Common mistakes that make an AI layout feel unfinished

Treating appearance as functionality

A button drawn in a mockup is not necessarily connected to an action, and a form shown on a page is not proof of a working submission flow. Use the interaction inventory and test each result.

Keeping generated copy without checking it

Generated text can be fluent but factually wrong for the site. Verify every claim and replace placeholder content before assessing the final layout.

Assuming “responsive” means finished at every size

Responsive capability is not a guarantee that a particular page will wrap, crop, stack, or collapse correctly. Review those behaviors directly and refine the layout where needed.

Choosing a route before checking its handoff

A managed live site may not satisfy a requirement for a downloadable code project. Conversely, a code-oriented route may require maintenance in a project rather than visual editing and managed publishing. Match the output to who will own updates.

Confusing separate workflows from the same vendor

A Figma conversion plugin and an AI site builder do not necessarily accept the same starting material or solve the same problem. Check the route’s specific compatibility limits before committing to it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Publishing before testing with real data

Placeholder content can conceal layout problems and disconnected flows. Connect the required data and test realistic user paths before treating a preview as launch-ready.

Choose a route with a maintenance plan in mind

The best route is the one that can carry the site through both launch and later changes. Before deciding, answer these questions for the people who will actually maintain it:

  • Do they need editable source code or a live site maintained inside a visual platform?
  • Does the existing design or site qualify for the transfer or builder workflow under consideration?
  • Who will connect data, maintain content, and handle later layout changes?
  • Does the route provide the export, repository, CMS, SEO, or publishing controls the project requires?
  • Can the team review the result at multiple widths and test the site’s real interactions before launch?

Current plan requirements, export availability, and product capabilities can change. Check the provider’s current documentation and terms for the specific workflow you plan to use; the product descriptions alone do not establish what is included in every plan.
