A playable Unity prototype is not a release candidate. To ship it, first freeze a recoverable copy, record the exact Editor and package state, inventory every dependency, document where generated and imported content came from, and then rebuild and test the project for a named target platform. Keep diagnostic development builds separate from release builds, and treat rights, declarations, signing, performance, and store compliance as release gates rather than paperwork after the fact.
The workflow below is deliberately target-aware. A Windows build, console title, mobile app, and Web build have different signing, input, memory, certification, privacy, and store obligations. Because no target platform or project files are specified here, the process shows what to verify and where a platform-specific decision must be made instead of pretending one universal checklist exists.
What “shippable” means for an AI-assisted Unity project
“Shippable” means you can reproduce a known build from a controlled project state, run that build on the intended platform, and demonstrate that its content, code, dependencies, rights, and submission materials satisfy the requirements of that platform and storefront. It does not mean the game merely enters Play mode without an obvious error.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →AI generation changes how quickly scripts, materials, models, textures, dialogue, or other project files can appear. It does not change their status: they are still project assets that must be reviewed, tracked, tested, and cleared for use. Unity’s in-editor generated assets can contain metadata identifying them as AI-generated, but that metadata is not a blanket license and does not replace checking the terms for a third-party generator, source asset, prompt input, or platform.

Before calling the project release-ready, establish these facts:
- The Unity Editor version, package versions, target platform, build configuration, and source revision are recorded.
- The project can be restored from version control or a verified backup.
- Scenes, scripts, prefabs, shaders, plugins, input, physics, and platform-specific files have owners and known dependencies.
- Generated and imported material has a provenance record and a rights decision.
- A clean build succeeds using a documented profile, and the resulting player runs on the intended device or runtime.
- Release-only checks—signing, privacy disclosures, age or content declarations, store metadata, and platform certification—are complete for the chosen target.
1. Preserve the prototype before changing it
Do not begin a large cleanup, asset replacement, or Editor upgrade in an untracked working directory. Your first deliverable is a restore point that can reproduce the prototype as it exists today.
Create a source-control checkpoint
- Close Unity or wait until all imports and script compilations finish.
- Commit the project’s text-based assets, scenes, scripts, settings, package manifests, and lock files to version control. Use a descriptive commit such as
prototype-freeze-YYYY-MM-DD; the date identifies the checkpoint, not a release promise. - Record the commit identifier in the project’s release notes or engineering log.
- Verify that another checkout, or a clean copy on the same machine, opens and imports successfully. A commit that was never restored is not a tested backup.
Unity recommends version control as the backup approach for projects. Auto-generated folders such as Library can normally be excluded from manual backups, but do not apply a blanket deletion rule to asset metadata. Confirm the repository’s Unity-appropriate serialization and metadata settings first; deleting metadata indiscriminately can break references, prefab identity, or scene links.

Capture the environment
Write down the exact Unity Editor version, active build target, package manifest and lock state, scripting backend or equivalent runtime settings, graphics APIs where relevant, and any locally installed plugins or SDKs required to open the project. Also save a working prototype build if one exists, along with the platform and configuration used to make it.
This record gives every later failure a comparison point. If an upgrade changes rendering, input, physics, serialization, or package behavior, you can determine whether the change came from your edit or from the environment.
2. Inventory what the prototype actually contains
AI-assisted prototypes often hide dependencies behind generated folders, copied samples, or a single scene that references more content than the creator remembers. Build an inventory before attempting architectural cleanup. The inventory is a map of what must be preserved, replaced, tested, or removed.
| Area | Record | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Scenes | Startup scene, gameplay scenes, menus, test scenes, and their order | Which scenes ship, and what is the first scene on each target? |
| Code | Scripts, assemblies, generated snippets, native plugins, and editor-only tools | Which code is runtime-safe, maintainable, and covered by tests? |
| Prefabs and assets | Prefab variants, models, textures, materials, animations, audio, fonts, and addressable or streamed content | Is each item used, licensed, optimized, and referenced by the intended scene? |
| Rendering | Render pipeline choice, shaders, post-processing, lighting data, and platform-specific graphics settings | Does the target device support the selected features at the required quality? |
| Input and physics | Input actions, control schemes, layers, collision matrices, physics settings, and fixed-step assumptions | Do controls and simulation behave correctly on the target hardware? |
| Packages | Manifest, lock file, package versions, registries, and samples | Are versions compatible with the recorded Editor and target platform? |
| Platform files | Icons, splash assets, entitlements, signing configuration, permissions, shaders, plugins, and build scripts | What must be supplied for the selected store or runtime? |
Separate prototype-only material
Mark debug scenes, placeholder art, benchmark scripts, sample packages, test credentials, temporary analytics, and experimental AI outputs. Do not delete them immediately. Move them to an explicitly named non-shipping area or remove them in a reviewed commit after confirming that no runtime scene or build script still references them.

For every scene intended to ship, list its direct references and the systems it expects to be initialized. A prototype may rely on a scene being opened manually in the Editor, a singleton left over from a previous run, or an object that exists only in a test scene. Those assumptions must become explicit startup behavior before release.
3. Establish provenance and usage rights for generated content
Make an asset register that follows content from generation or import to the final build. Include generated code, art, models, textures, music, sound effects, dialogue, prompt inputs, reference images, downloaded packages, and substantial human edits.
What to record
- Asset path and type.
- Date and tool or source used to create or obtain it.
- Prompt, reference material, or source URL when applicable.
- Human author or editor and the changes made after generation.
- License or terms that govern the generator, source material, and redistribution.
- Where the asset is used in the game and whether it ships in a player, download, or marketing package.
- The reviewer’s decision: cleared, replaced, restricted, or awaiting evidence.
Unity states that assets generated by its in-editor assistant include embedded metadata flagging them as AI-generated. Treat that flag as useful provenance, not as proof that every input or output is cleared for commercial use. The obligations for another generator, an imported asset, or a prompt containing someone else’s material may be different.
Unity’s official guidance puts the responsibility plainly: “Developers are fully responsible for managing app store declarations and verifying usage rights.” That includes deciding whether a storefront asks for an AI-content disclosure, whether a license permits redistribution in the selected region, and whether attribution or notices must ship with the game.
Use a release gate, not a last-minute search
Do not wait until a store submission form asks about AI. Block release of an asset whose terms are unknown. If a generated texture used a reference image with unclear rights, replace it or obtain evidence before the asset enters the release branch. If generated code includes an external snippet, review its license and obligations just as you would for imported source code. Keep the evidence with the project so a future update does not repeat the same investigation.
4. Stabilize the Editor and packages before upgrading
An upgrade is a project change, not routine housekeeping. Unity warns that package incompatibilities and feature changes can affect scripts, shaders, third-party assets, and builds. Use the frozen checkpoint as the baseline and perform upgrades as isolated, reversible changes.
- Read the release notes and upgrade guidance for the proposed Editor and packages.
- Check that the target platform, render pipeline, input system, plugins, and build tooling support the proposed versions.
- Create a branch or checkpoint for the upgrade.
- Open the project and resolve compilation, serialization, package, and import errors before changing gameplay.
- Run the project and exercise features that depend on changed systems: loading, input, physics, animation, shaders, audio, saving, networking, and plugins as applicable.
- Build for the intended platform and run that build. Editor Play mode is not evidence that the player build is compatible.
- Keep the upgrade only if the acceptance checks pass; otherwise restore the checkpoint and investigate one change at a time.
Choose an Editor version for the project’s platform and dependencies, not because it is simply newer. Record the final choice and lock package resolution so another machine or a build service does not silently select different versions.

5. Turn prototype systems into production-owned systems
AI-generated scripts can be structurally plausible while still failing under conditions a prototype never exercised. Assign ownership and acceptance criteria to each gameplay system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Code and runtime behavior
- Remove hard-coded paths, test keys, debug cheats, and assumptions about the active scene.
- Define what happens when an asset, save file, input action, or network response is missing.
- Make initialization order explicit and log failures with enough context to diagnose a player build.
- Review generated code for unreachable branches, unbounded loops, repeated allocations, unsafe reflection, and copied dependencies whose licenses are unknown.
- Separate editor scripts and test utilities from runtime assemblies so they cannot enter a player accidentally.
Content and rendering
- Replace placeholder meshes, materials, sounds, and UI that are not cleared for distribution.
- Check texture dimensions, compression, mesh complexity, shader variants, lighting data, and animation clips against the target’s memory and performance budgets.
- Test scenes from a cold launch, not only after opening them in the Editor, to expose missing serialized references and initialization dependencies.
Data, saves, and updates
If the game saves progress, define the file location, version the save format, and decide how an update handles older data. If content is downloaded or streamed, verify its availability and integrity without assuming an Editor cache exists. These decisions are project-specific; document them as requirements rather than relying on prototype behavior.
6. Use separate development and release build profiles
Unity Build Profiles let you select scenes and target-specific settings. Maintain at least one profile for diagnostics and one for delivery, with differences reviewed rather than changed ad hoc before every build.
| Concern | Development profile | Release profile |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Debugging, profiling, and reproducing issues | Delivering the player to users or a store |
| Diagnostics | Development and diagnostic facilities enabled as needed | Only the diagnostics intentionally required for support or certification |
| Scenes | May include test or benchmark scenes when explicitly selected | Only the approved shipping scene list, in launch order |
| Symbols and logs | Symbols, verbose logging, and profiler access according to the test plan | Release symbol and logging policy, with no secrets or internal paths |
| Signing and identity | Test certificate or sandbox identity where the platform permits it | Production signing identity and store-specific configuration |
| Acceptance | Useful for diagnosing a failure; not proof of shipping readiness | Must pass the release-candidate test and submission gates |
A development build exposes facilities useful for diagnostics and profiling. A release build should contain what is needed to run the application without carrying experimental scenes, test credentials, or accidental debug controls. Never infer release behavior from a development build when stripping, optimization, signing, graphics settings, or permissions differ.
Make the scene list intentional
Open the Build Profiles window and verify the selected target, scene list, ordering, scripting and graphics settings, and platform-specific options. Save the profile or configuration in a reviewed project change. A successful build with the wrong startup scene is still a failed release.
7. Make builds reproducible and automatable
Unity supports Editor-driven builds, command-line builds, custom build scripts, and automated pipeline services. The right choice depends on team size, platform access, and how often you need a build—not on a universal winner.
| Workflow | Best fit | Controls to add |
|---|---|---|
| Editor-driven | Small teams and interactive setup of a new profile | Recorded profile, clean checkout, named output folder, and saved build log |
| Command line or custom script | Repeatable local or continuous-integration builds | Explicit project path, target, profile, version, output, and failure handling |
| Automated build service | Teams needing centralized credentials, scheduled builds, or shared artifacts | Pinned Editor and package versions, protected secrets, artifact retention, and approvals |
Whichever workflow you choose, build from a clean, known revision rather than a developer’s uncommitted workspace. Store the source revision, Editor version, package lock state, target, profile, build number, warnings, errors, and output hash with the artifact. This turns “it worked on my machine” into a result another person can inspect.

Protect credentials
Keep signing keys, store passwords, API tokens, test accounts, and private endpoints out of source control and out of player logs. Supply them through the platform’s approved secret mechanism or a local secure store, and verify that a development profile cannot accidentally use production credentials.
8. Validate the actual release candidate
Build validation is an evidence-gathering exercise. Use the release profile, install the resulting player on the intended device or runtime, and record pass or fail results against project-specific acceptance criteria.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Test area | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Launch and first run | Cold launch, first-time setup, permissions, splash flow, and recovery from a missing or corrupt local file | Device, build number, result, and relevant log |
| Core loop | Start, play, pause, resume, win or lose, restart, and exit without relying on Editor state | Scenario or test case and pass/fail result |
| Input | Every supported control scheme, focus changes, remapping if offered, and controller disconnect or reconnect | Target hardware and configuration |
| Scene transitions | Loading, asynchronous operations, back navigation, and repeated entry and exit | Observed errors, timing notes, and logs |
| Save and load | New save, update of an existing save, interrupted write, and incompatible older data if relevant | Save version and recovery result |
| Audio and rendering | Music, effects, mute behavior, resolution or orientation, materials, shaders, lighting, and visual effects | Device, graphics settings, screenshots or captures where useful |
| Performance | Frame pacing, load times, memory pressure, thermal behavior, and battery impact where relevant to the target | Measurements against your defined budget |
| Errors and telemetry | Player logs, crash reporting, privacy behavior, and absence of secrets or development endpoints | Sanitized logs and configuration review |
These categories are a practical test plan, not results from testing a particular game. Set budgets and pass criteria for the actual target hardware. A desktop prototype may need different memory, frame-time, resolution, accessibility, and input checks than a mobile or console build.
Test more than the happy path
Exercise interrupted loading, repeated scene transitions, window focus changes, low storage, missing optional content, invalid save data, unplugged controllers, and device rotation or suspend-resume when those conditions apply. AI-generated logic often handles the expected sequence while failing at a boundary. Log the exact build, device, steps, and first observable failure so a fix can be reproduced.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Complete platform and storefront gates
The target platform is an unresolved project decision until you name it. Do not copy a checklist from another platform and assume it applies.
Desktop
Define supported operating-system versions, graphics APIs, display modes, controller support, installation location, update behavior, crash reporting, and any platform-specific privacy or consent requirements. Test on clean machines or environments that do not contain the Editor, cached packages, or developer-only runtimes.
Mobile
Confirm the required SDK and signing setup, device architecture, permissions, orientation, lifecycle behavior, memory limits, background and resume behavior, in-app purchase or account flows if present, and the selected store’s declarations. Test on representative low- and high-end devices rather than relying on a desktop simulation.

Console or closed platforms
Use the platform holder’s current development, certification, signing, performance, accessibility, privacy, and submission requirements. Access, terminology, and test procedures are controlled by the platform holder, so they cannot be generalized from a PC workflow.
Web or browser runtime
Check browser support, loading and caching behavior, input focus, audio-start policies, memory limits, networking and security headers, URL routing, and how updates invalidate cached assets. Test the deployed build, not only a local server.
Store declarations and privacy
Prepare accurate content ratings, privacy disclosures, permissions, third-party notices, AI-content declarations where required, screenshots, descriptions, age gates, and support contact details. Ensure the shipped binary matches those declarations. If analytics, advertising, accounts, cloud saves, or downloaded content are present, document what data is collected, why it is collected, where it goes, and how users can control it according to the applicable law and platform rules.

The project opens with missing scripts or broken references
Return to the frozen checkpoint and compare package, Editor, and metadata state. Re-importing or upgrading repeatedly can obscure the original cause. Restore the recorded package lock, inspect the first compilation error, and repair the dependency or serialized reference before addressing later errors.
The game works in Play mode but fails in the player
Check the release scene list, initialization order, stripping or optimization settings, graphics API, file paths, shader inclusion, permissions, and platform-specific plugins. Reproduce from a clean build and collect the player log; do not treat an Editor console with no errors as proof of a valid player.
Generated content has no clear license
Quarantine the asset from the release branch. Identify the generator, prompt inputs, reference material, applicable terms, and intended distribution. If the evidence does not establish permission, replace the asset or obtain a documented rights decision. Metadata identifying AI generation is not a substitute for that review.
An upgrade introduces visual or gameplay changes
Compare the upgrade branch with the frozen build using a focused test list for affected packages and features. Check release notes, package compatibility, shaders, input, physics, and third-party plugins. Keep the upgrade only after the target-platform build passes; otherwise revert and schedule the change separately.
The release build contains test content or secrets
Inspect the release profile’s scenes, resources, addressable or streamed content, build scripts, logs, and configuration files. Search the final artifact and installed player for test endpoints, credentials, debug menus, and internal paths. Correct the source and rebuild rather than patching the output manually.
11. Final release checklist
- A tagged source-control revision can restore the project.
- Editor, packages, target, profile, and build number are recorded.
- The repository excludes regenerable folders appropriately and preserves required metadata.
- Every shipping scene and dependency is inventoried.
- Generated, imported, and human-authored content has provenance and a rights decision.
- Prototype-only scenes, credentials, debug controls, and experimental assets are excluded.
- Upgrade changes have been reviewed, tested, and built for the target.
- The release profile contains the approved scenes and target settings.
- The build was produced from a clean, known revision and its artifact and logs were retained.
- The installed release candidate passes launch, gameplay, input, transitions, save/load, audio, rendering, error, and performance checks appropriate to the target.
- Signing, permissions, privacy, content ratings, AI declarations, third-party notices, and store metadata match the binary.
- A rollback plan exists for the source revision, build artifact, and store submission.
When every item has an owner and evidence, the AI-generated prototype has become a controlled Unity project rather than an unrepeatable demo. The remaining work is target-specific certification and submission, not a leap of faith that the Editor preview represents the product users will receive.
