You can save one paused moment from a phone video as a separate still image without installing an add-on. On an iPhone, open the clip in Apple Photos and use Save Video Frame as Photo. On Android, open the clip in Google Photos, enter the video editor, select the moment you want, and use Export frame when that control is available.
The exact Android control can move between Google Photos versions, and Google says video editing is unavailable on non-Pixel phones running Android 9. The steps below show the official paths first, then explain where the saved image appears, what to try when a control is missing, and what the available evidence does—and does not—establish about image quality.
Quick answer: use the phone’s photo app

These are separate still-photo files created from the selected video moment. The supplied official instructions do not specify the exported file’s pixel dimensions, compression level, or whether either platform preserves more detail than the other, so do not treat either workflow as a guaranteed “full-resolution” export.

Apple Photos includes a dedicated action for this job. Apple describes the feature as saving “a frame from a video as a photo.” Follow the steps in Apple’s iPhone user guide.

Step-by-step
- Open the Photos app.
- Open the video that contains the moment you want.
- Play the video, then pause when the target image is visible. Use the video timeline to move to a nearby moment if necessary.
- Tap More, shown as the three-dot control.
- Choose Save Video Frame as Photo.
- Return to your photo library and look for the new still.
The command acts on the frame currently paused on. If the subject is between two moments, pause, move the playhead slightly, and run the command again; each saved selection becomes its own still image.
Find the new image in Photos
Apple says the still is saved in the photo library. Its position depends on the library sort setting:
- If the library is sorted by Added, the new photo appears at the bottom.
- If the library is sorted by Captured, it appears beside the original video.
Those two locations can make it seem as if the export failed when the photo is actually present under a different sort order. Open the video’s surrounding date in the library if you use Captured, or check the bottom of the library if you use Added.

If the iPhone command is not visible
Make sure you opened the video itself rather than a single photo, and pause playback before opening More. The Apple workflow places Save Video Frame as Photo in the video’s three-dot menu; it is not a general command shown for every item in Photos. If the item still does not appear, confirm that you are using Apple Photos on the iPhone rather than a different gallery or a third-party viewer.
Export a video frame on Android with Google Photos
Google Photos documents frame export as part of its video editor. The official path is described in Google Photos Help for Android.
Official workflow
- Open Google Photos on the Android phone or tablet.
- Open the video you want to use.
- Open the video editor for that clip.
- Move to the desired point in the video strip and select the frame.
- Tap Export frame.
- Open your photo library and verify that the exported still has been added.
The wording and placement of the editor controls can change as Google Photos is updated. The essential sequence is unchanged: open the clip, choose the precise point, and invoke Export frame from the editor rather than taking a general screenshot of the playback screen.

When Export frame is hidden behind another control
Some recent Google Photos layouts place the frame action behind a control associated with the video strip. In community guidance, users report selecting the desired point first and then tapping a camera or timestamp control to reveal Export frame. That report is useful for locating the command after an interface change, but it is not a universal official layout specification. See the recent discussion at Google Photos Community.
Try this order when you cannot see the command:
- Open the clip in Google Photos and enter editing mode.
- Tap or drag the video strip until the exact frame is selected.
- Look for a camera, timestamp, or similarly frame-related control near the strip.
- Open that control and check for Export frame.
If the control is still absent, continue with the availability checks below before assuming the video is damaged.
Android availability: the Android 9 non-Pixel limitation
Google Photos Help states that video editing is unavailable on non-Pixel Android devices running Android 9. Because Export frame is an editor function, this built-in route cannot be promised on those phones. The limitation is tied to the combination of a non-Pixel device and Android 9; do not apply it automatically to every Android phone.

Check before troubleshooting the menu
- Identify whether the phone is a Pixel or a different Android model.
- Check the Android version in the phone’s system information.
- Open the video in Google Photos and see whether editing controls load at all.
If the phone is a non-Pixel device on Android 9 and the editor is unavailable, changing the timeline or searching additional menus will not enable the documented feature. You will need another supported device or a separate frame-extraction method. The available guidance does not establish a particular third-party app as a recommendation, so choose any alternative with the usual care about permissions, file access, and the destination of uploaded media.

There is no Export frame option on Android
First confirm that you are inside the Google Photos video editor, not merely viewing the clip. Select a point on the video strip, then inspect any camera or timestamp control near that strip, as described in the community guidance. If no editor opens, check the Android 9 non-Pixel limitation. The control may also be presented differently after a Google Photos interface update, so use the current labels shown on your device.

The exported image shows the wrong moment
Frame selection happens before the export command. Move the playhead, pause or select the target point, and export again. Fast movement, camera shake, or a subject crossing the scene can make adjacent frames look substantially different; selecting a neighboring point is the practical fix.
The result looks soft or lower quality than expected
A video frame is one image from a moving sequence, so motion blur, focus, lighting, and the source video’s recording settings affect the result. The cited Apple and Google documentation explains how to create the still but does not publish a resolution or quality comparison for exported frames. Do not assume that the saved image has the same characteristics as a photo taken by the phone’s camera, and do not assume one platform produces a sharper file than the other without a measurement for your specific clip.
The clip cannot be edited
On Android, determine whether the device falls under Google’s non-Pixel Android 9 restriction. On either platform, make sure the item is a locally accessible video that the native photo app can open. If the built-in editor is unavailable, use another supported device or a separate extraction workflow rather than repeatedly searching for a menu that the phone does not provide.

Neither native workflow requires a replacement phone, camera accessory, storage accessory, or paid editing manual. If the compatible app and editor are already available, the task is performed with the phone you have.
What this method does and does not preserve
The output is a still image derived from a single video frame. It is useful for capturing an expression, a gesture, a whiteboard moment, or another instant that was recorded in motion. It is not a way to recreate a separately captured photograph: the source video determines the available detail, and the selected frame may contain motion blur or compression artifacts.
Apple and Google’s cited help pages establish the commands and availability conditions, but they do not give a universal exported resolution, file-size range, color profile, or platform-to-platform quality ranking. For a publication or print requirement, inspect the resulting file on the device and verify its dimensions and appearance in the destination service instead of relying on an assumed specification.
