Yes, a PSP can be converted into a Raspberry Pi computer, but it is a hardware replacement project rather than a software trick. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine documented “PSPi,” a build that removed the original Sony PSP electronics and installed a Raspberry Pi Zero inside the handheld. That proves the concept; it does not provide a ready-to-follow wiring guide, complete parts list, or tested recipe for every PSP model.

The practical way to approach the project is to treat the magazine article as proof of feasibility, then design and validate the display, controls, audio, battery, charging, mounting, and heat solution yourself. The confirmed starting point is a Raspberry Pi Zero, a microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS, and an appropriate micro-USB power supply for bench setup.

What “turning a PSP into a Raspberry Pi” actually means

There are two very different ideas behind this phrase:

  • Internal conversion: replace the PSP’s motherboard and supporting electronics with a Raspberry Pi and custom interface circuits, while reusing the shell and possibly the screen, controls, speakers, and battery.
  • External use: leave the PSP unmodified and somehow use it as a monitor or controller for a separate Raspberry Pi.

The documented PSPi project is the first type. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine says the project put a Raspberry Pi Zero inside a Sony PSP. Its overview does not document a method for driving an untouched PSP as an external display or controller, so you should not assume that such a software-only conversion is available.

An internal conversion is closer to a custom embedded-computer build than to installing an app. The original console’s screen, buttons, analog control, audio amplifier, battery, charging circuit, connectors, and motherboard were designed to work together. Removing that motherboard removes the interfaces that made those parts usable. A successful build therefore needs new electrical and mechanical connections between the Pi and the retained PSP components.

What the documented PSPi project confirms

The magazine identifies the board used in PSPi as the original Raspberry Pi Zero. The builder, identified only as Adam, described it as a second version with updated circuits and said that another version was in development:

“It’s the second version of the PSPi, and includes many updated circuits. It’s complete now, and the next version is in the works with some big changes coming.”

The article is evidence that a Pi Zero can be physically integrated into a PSP-sized handheld. It is not a build manual. The page does not publish a complete bill of materials, circuit diagrams, firmware files, connector pinouts, assembly sequence, exact PSP revision, cost, battery runtime, or thermal measurements. Read the original report at Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s PSPi article.

That distinction matters: you can use PSPi to justify beginning a project, but copying the idea requires engineering work that the article leaves unspecified.

Raspberry Pi Zero specifications relevant to the conversion

The current Raspberry Pi Foundation product page lists the Raspberry Pi Zero with a 1 GHz single-core CPU, 512 MB of RAM, Mini HDMI, micro-USB OTG, micro-USB power, and a 40-pin header. See the official Raspberry Pi Zero specifications.

Item Figure or feature How to interpret it for a PSP build
CPU 1 GHz, single core (current Foundation listing) Establishes the board’s published capability; it is not a measured PSPi performance result.
Memory 512 MB RAM Enough to identify the board used by the project, but not a guarantee that every emulator or application will run well.
Video connector Mini HDMI Useful during bench setup; integrating it with the PSP LCD requires a separate display-interface design.
USB Micro-USB OTG Can support peripherals during development; the finished enclosure may require a hub, adapter, or a different connector strategy.
Power Micro-USB input Provides a known bench-power entry point; it does not prove compatibility with a PSP battery.
Expansion 40-pin header Offers GPIO access for custom interfaces, but the required circuits and pin assignments are not supplied by the PSPi report.

The magazine’s comparison gives the PSP as 333 MHz with 32 MB of RAM and the Pi Zero as 900 MHz with 512 MB. Those are the figures presented in that historical article, not independent benchmark measurements. The current official listing uses 1 GHz for the Zero. No measured performance benchmark for the completed PSPi appears in the cited material, so neither set of clock figures should be turned into a promised frame rate or emulation result.

Minimum confirmed equipment for a bench prototype

Only a few items are directly established as baseline requirements by the Raspberry Pi documentation:

  • Raspberry Pi Zero: this is the board named in the PSPi report. Confirm the exact revision you obtain before designing the enclosure.
  • MicroSD card: Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance says to begin with a card containing Raspberry Pi OS. The sources do not specify a required capacity, so choose one according to the operating system and software you intend to install rather than treating an invented capacity as a project requirement.
  • Micro-USB power supply: use an appropriate supply for initial bench work. Raspberry Pi’s product guidance covers starting the Zero with micro-USB power and Raspberry Pi OS; consult the current instructions at Raspberry Pi’s Zero product page.
  • A donor PSP: the project needs a shell and the parts you intend to reuse. The documented page does not identify the PSP model or revision, so compatibility of your donor cannot be inferred from the article.

For early testing, keep the Pi outside the shell. Boot it, verify the operating system, and work out each interface before you commit to cutting plastic or soldering into a battery circuit.

Project-specific engineering that the sources do not solve

The following are the central design tasks. The PSPi overview does not provide enough information to specify a wiring diagram or claim that any particular off-the-shelf adapter will work.

Display interface

A PSP LCD is not automatically compatible with the Pi’s Mini HDMI output. You must identify the exact panel and its electrical interface, then determine whether a suitable controller or custom bridge can translate the Pi’s video signal. Mechanical fit, voltage levels, timing, backlight power, and connector pinout all need confirmation from the panel’s documentation or measurements. Do not connect an unidentified LCD directly to GPIO or HDMI pins.

Buttons and analog control

The directional pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons, and analog nub are passive controls in the original console, but the Pi needs them presented as readable inputs. A design may use GPIO with appropriate switch wiring or an input controller, but the PSPi article does not state which method was used. Map every control, account for switch grounding and pull-ups, and test for bounce before writing software that depends on the inputs.

Audio

Reuse of the PSP speakers requires a compatible amplifier and a safe signal level. The Pi’s available audio path, any amplifier board, speaker impedance, and physical speaker enclosure must be evaluated together. The published project does not disclose its audio circuit, so do not copy an assumed pinout or connect speakers to an arbitrary GPIO pin.

Battery, charging, and voltage regulation

This is the highest-risk part of a portable conversion. Raspberry Pi documentation specifies 5.1 V for its computers and describes micro-USB power for models through the Pi 3 generation. That requirement does not establish that an original PSP battery can be connected directly to a Pi Zero. A portable build needs a purpose-designed battery-management and regulation solution that can provide the required voltage and current, include appropriate charging and protection, and isolate unsafe wiring.

Do not guess from the battery’s nominal voltage, splice the cells directly to the Pi, or retain an unknown PSP charging circuit without a documented electrical analysis. The PSPi article does not identify its battery, charger, regulator, protection board, capacity, or runtime. Use the Raspberry Pi hardware documentation as the electrical reference for the computer side: Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation.

Physical mounting and connectors

The Pi Zero’s board, headers, USB plugs, display adapter, audio hardware, and power board all consume space. A clean installation needs an insulated mounting method, strain relief, access to the microSD card, and a way to service the device without crushing cables. The source material supplies no enclosure dimensions, printable files, bracket design, or connector placement, so those must be developed against your specific donor shell.

Heat and current validation

Do not infer safe temperatures or battery life from the magazine feature. Measure the assembled system under the workloads you intend to run, with the shell closed and the display and audio active. Confirm that the regulator, battery wiring, and Pi remain within their documented limits, and stop testing if cables, cells, or regulators heat unexpectedly.

Which Raspberry Pi Zero should you choose?

The PSPi report names a Raspberry Pi Zero, not every board in the Zero family. Raspberry Pi’s current hardware documentation lists Zero, Zero W, Zero WH, Zero 2 W, and Zero 2 WH variants and notes differences such as wireless capability and header availability.

Choice What is established What remains unverified for PSPi
Original Raspberry Pi Zero Directly named in the PSPi report; current official listing specifies 1 GHz and 512 MB. The report still does not publish its exact board revision, wiring, or mechanical drawings.
Zero W or Zero WH W variants add wireless connectivity; header configuration differs by model. No substitution test shows that the PSP shell, circuits, power design, or software fit.
Zero 2 W or Zero 2 WH A later Zero-family option with a different platform. Use would be an unverified redesign requiring new checks for dimensions, heat, power draw, header arrangement, and software behavior.

Choose the original Zero when your priority is to follow the only board choice explicitly documented by the project. Consider another variant only when you have a specific need, such as wireless networking, and are prepared to redesign and retest the conversion. A newer board is not automatically a drop-in upgrade.

  1. Choose and document the donor. Record the PSP model and revision, photograph the internal assemblies, and decide which parts you will retain. Do not assume another revision has the same LCD, button membrane, battery, or mounting points.
  2. Prove the Pi works on the bench. Install Raspberry Pi OS on a microSD card, connect the Pi Zero to an appropriate micro-USB supply, and verify that it boots before connecting any PSP hardware. Keep the board accessible so you can recover the card or change wiring.
  3. Inventory every retained part. Identify the LCD connector, backlight circuit, button contacts, analog assembly, speakers, microphone if present, battery connector, and charging contacts. Mark unknown parts as unknown instead of assigning a pinout by appearance.
  4. Obtain interface information. Find documentation for the exact LCD and battery, or characterize them with suitable electronics tools and safety procedures. Establish voltage, signal type, current demand, and connector orientation before designing an adapter.
  5. Prototype one subsystem at a time. Test display, controls, audio, and power separately. A fault in one circuit should not be able to damage the Pi or battery while you are diagnosing another.
  6. Design the power path independently. Select a regulated 5.1 V supply path for the Pi, a compatible charger and protection arrangement for the chosen battery, and a safe on/off method. Validate the output with a meter and under load before attaching the computer.
  7. Create the mechanical layout. Place the Pi, regulators, adapters, speakers, and wiring in the donor shell. Check button travel, screen alignment, USB and video access during development, insulation, and serviceability.
  8. Integrate software inputs and outputs. Map the controls to the chosen input method, configure the display driver or controller, and verify audio routing. The exact software configuration depends on the interfaces you selected; it is not supplied by the PSPi article.
  9. Run staged tests. Test with external bench power first, then with the portable power system, then with the shell closed. Monitor voltage, current, temperature, accidental resets, display stability, input errors, and charging behavior.
  10. Document your own revision. Keep a wiring diagram, parts list, board revisions, measured voltages, and test results. Future repairs will otherwise require reverse-engineering your modifications.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming the PSP motherboard can stay in place

The documented conversion replaces the PSP internals. Leaving the original motherboard in place does not create a Pi interface; it usually creates a space, power, and signal conflict. Decide at the outset whether you are building a full replacement or a separate external accessory.

Treating HDMI as a universal LCD connection

A connector shape does not tell you that a panel accepts the signal produced by the Pi. Confirm the panel interface and use a suitable controller or bridge designed for it.

Connecting the original battery directly

The Pi’s 5.1 V requirement and a PSP battery’s chemistry are different facts. Without a validated regulator, charger, protection circuit, and wiring plan, direct connection can damage hardware or create a fire hazard.

Buying a newer Zero board and expecting a drop-in fit

Wireless variants and Zero 2 models may differ in header availability, power behavior, heat, and software support. The published conversion contains no compatibility matrix or substitution test.

Promising a runtime or performance level

No verified runtime, cost, thermal result, or measured benchmark is reported for PSPi. State those values only after testing your own build with a defined battery, software load, and measurement method.

What is known—and what is not

Question Evidence-based answer
Has a PSP-to-Pi conversion been demonstrated? Yes. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine documented PSPi with a Raspberry Pi Zero inside a Sony PSP.
Is there a complete public tutorial in that report? No. The report does not provide a complete parts list, wiring diagram, build files, or step-by-step procedure.
Which PSP model was used? Not stated on the cited page.
How are the original screen and controls connected? Not explained in the cited material.
Can the original PSP battery be wired directly to the Pi? Not established and should not be assumed safe.
What does the finished conversion cost? Not stated.
How long does it run on a charge? Not stated.
Are Zero W, Zero 2 W, or other variants tested replacements? No substitution testing or compatibility table is provided.

When a PSP conversion is the right project

Choose this route if your goal is to preserve the PSP’s shell and physical character while learning custom electronics, embedded Linux, display interfacing, and battery design. Expect iterative fabrication and troubleshooting rather than a weekend software installation.

If your priority is simply a working Raspberry Pi handheld, a purpose-built case with a documented display, controls, and power system may involve less reverse-engineering. That is a different project, however; the PSPi evidence only establishes the feasibility of putting a Pi Zero inside a PSP and does not compare the two approaches or certify any commercial case.

Final answer

You can turn a PSP into a Raspberry Pi computer, and the PSPi project proves that an internal Raspberry Pi Zero conversion is real. Start with the Pi Zero, Raspberry Pi OS on a microSD card, and safe micro-USB bench power. Then treat the LCD, controls, audio, battery, charging, mounting, and thermal behavior as separate engineering problems. Until you have documentation or measurements for your particular donor and circuit design, do not claim a universal wiring method, direct battery compatibility, exact cost, runtime, or tested support for another Zero-family board.
