A four-port 2.5GbE mini PC can become a capable home router and firewall when you install x86-64 router software such as OPNsense, connect one port to your modem or optical network terminal (ONT), and use another for your internal network. The mini PC performs routing, DHCP, DNS forwarding, firewalling and optional VPN or intrusion-prevention work; it does not replace a Wi-Fi access point, and it may not replace a switch when you have more wired devices than available ports.

The reliable way to build it is to identify the actual network-interface names, assign WAN and LAN deliberately, configure each additional port as a routed network when useful, and measure the finished system’s power and throughput instead of assuming that a 2.5GbE label guarantees 2.5Gbps routing.

What this setup does—and what it does not

In this design, the mini PC is the network’s Layer 3 gateway. OPNsense runs on its x86-64 processor and controls traffic between your ISP connection and your home networks. It can provide:

  • WAN addressing, including DHCP from an ISP or a manually configured/static connection.
  • LAN addressing and DHCP for clients.
  • Stateful firewall rules between the internet and internal networks.
  • DNS forwarding or resolver services.
  • Separate trusted, guest and IoT networks.
  • Optional VPN, traffic shaping, logging and intrusion-detection features.

It is not automatically a Wi-Fi router. You still need a Wi-Fi access point, wireless router in access-point mode, or a wired access point. If you have many wired clients, add a switch. A managed switch and VLAN-capable access point can carry several logical networks over one tagged link; otherwise, the spare physical ports can provide separate networks.

Choose hardware that matches the workload

OPNsense states that “The hardware required for your local OPNsense will be determined by the intended minimum throughput and feature set.” A four-port 2.5GbE rating describes the electrical link speed of the ports, not the throughput the complete appliance can route while running VPN encryption, deep inspection, large state tables or other services.

OPNsense sizing profiles

Profile Processor Memory Storage What the figure means
Minimum 1 GHz dual-core 3 GB RAM Minimum 4 GB install target For standard features that do not require disk writes; not a performance guarantee.
Reasonable 1 GHz dual-core 4 GB RAM 40 GB SSD A practical baseline for a modest installation; actual needs vary with traffic and services.
Recommended 1.5 GHz multi-core 8 GB RAM 120 GB SSD OPNsense’s recommended profile for broader headroom, not a promise of 2.5Gbps routing.

OPNsense also gives an approximate rule of about 1 kB of RAM per state-table entry. A busy household, many devices, long-lived connections, cameras or downloads can make state-table capacity more important than raw port speed. Caching proxies, high-volume state tables, VPN encryption and intrusion-detection workloads can all change the required CPU, memory and storage.

Checklist for a four-port mini PC

  • Network controller: identify the exact Ethernet chipset, not only “2.5GbE.” Verify that the current OPNsense/FreeBSD driver supports it and that all four ports appear reliably.
  • CPU and RAM: use at least the reasonable profile for a general home gateway; choose more memory and cores for VPN, IDS/IPS, proxying or many clients.
  • Storage: use a reliable SSD with enough space for the chosen installation and logs. A 120 GB SSD is OPNsense’s recommended profile.
  • Cooling: sustained firewall or VPN work can expose weak heatsinks, noisy fans or thermal throttling.
  • Firmware and boot: confirm UEFI/BIOS settings, the ability to boot from installation media and a way to reach the console if the web interface is unavailable.
  • Power measurement: measure the complete appliance at the wall, including its power adapter, at idle and under representative traffic.

For pfSense, Netgate directs builders to the FreeBSD hardware notes for the FreeBSD version used by the build. Netgate also emphasizes that NIC selection matters and qualifies Intel-NIC guidance by speed and vendor factors above 1 Gbps. Do not infer compatibility from a port label alone.

Plan the four ports before installing

Draw the intended connections and write down the physical chassis label, the operating-system interface name and the network role for every port. The printed labels may not match the names OPNsense displays.

Physical port Typical role Example use Notes
Port 1 WAN Modem or ONT Receives the ISP address, often by DHCP.
Port 2 LAN Managed switch or access point Primary trusted home subnet and management path.
Port 3 Optional routed interface Guest, IoT or trusted wired segment Physically separate network; configure its own address, DHCP scope and rules.
Port 4 Optional routed interface or unused Lab, cameras or another segment Leave unassigned until you have a policy and a reason to use it.

The simple design uses one WAN port and one LAN port. The other two can be separate routed interfaces. VLANs are optional: use them when a managed switch and access point need to transport multiple networks over one cable, not as a prerequisite for a basic router.

Install OPNsense on the mini PC

  1. Obtain the current x86-64 OPNsense image. Use the installation instructions for the release you are installing rather than relying on old screenshots or defaults. Write the image to removable media, boot the mini PC from it and install OPNsense to the local SSD through the console.
  2. Keep cabling simple during first boot. Where practical, connect only the intended modem/ONT path and the intended internal-network path. Disconnect other cables so a mistaken assignment cannot affect another network.
  3. Record interface names and link state. At the console, inspect the available interfaces and their link indicators. Move one cable at a time if necessary to learn which operating-system interface corresponds to each physical socket.
  4. Assign interfaces deliberately. During manual assignment, OPNsense treats the first assigned interface as LAN and the second as WAN. Assign the interface physically connected to your internal network as LAN and the interface connected to the modem or ONT as WAN. Do not assume that “LAN1” printed on the case is the first interface shown by the operating system.
  5. Confirm the ISP requirements. DHCP is common, but some connections require a VLAN tag, PPPoE credentials, a static address or a modem in bridge mode. Enter those requirements only after the correct WAN interface is selected.
  6. Set the LAN address and DHCP range. Choose a private subnet that does not overlap with the modem, a VPN, or another site you regularly reach. Enable DHCP for the home range, reserving static mappings where useful for access points, switches and servers.
  7. Connect one client to LAN. The client should receive an address, gateway and DNS settings from OPNsense. Open the management interface at the LAN address shown by the console or quick-start screen.
  8. Change initial credentials and update. Replace any initial administrator credentials, apply the current updates, and reboot if the release requests it before moving every household device to the new router.

The quick-start arrangement ordinarily places LAN on the first interface and WAN on the second, with DHCP on WAN. Treat that as a starting convention, not proof that your mini PC’s physical sockets follow the same order. Verify the assignment and the ISP’s requirements on the actual installation.

Assign the remaining Ethernet ports

In OPNsense, open Interfaces → Assignments. Add an unassigned physical interface, save, enable it, give it an address, and create a DHCP scope if clients on that network need automatic configuration. Repeat for the fourth port only when you have a defined use and firewall policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate physical networks

A physical guest or IoT port is easy to understand: connect that socket to a dedicated switch or access point, give it a different subnet, and write rules that control which destinations are allowed. This provides physical separation, but it consumes a mini-PC port and may require additional switches or access points.

VLANs over one uplink

With a managed switch and VLAN-capable access point, one LAN port can carry several tagged networks. Configure matching 802.1Q VLAN IDs on the router, switch and access point. A mismatch can leave clients without DHCP or place them in the wrong security zone. VLANs reduce cabling and preserve ports, but they add configuration dependencies and are not a substitute for firewall rules.

Do not bridge WAN and LAN casually

A normal home-router installation routes between WAN and LAN. Bridging ports can remove the separation that the firewall depends on and can expose devices directly to an upstream network. Use a bridge only for a specific, understood design and with rules appropriate to that design.

Create a guest network safely

  1. Go to Interfaces → Assignments and add the spare physical port or VLAN.
  2. Enable the interface and assign a distinct private address, such as a subnet that does not overlap the trusted LAN. Choose your own subnet rather than copying an example blindly.
  3. Enable DHCP for the guest range and provide the correct gateway and DNS settings.
  4. Add firewall rules on the guest interface that block access to the trusted LAN, management addresses, other private networks and the firewall itself as appropriate for your policy.
  5. Add an allow rule for intended internet traffic after the local-network blocks. Place more specific deny rules above broad allow rules because firewall rules are evaluated in order.
  6. Connect a test device, verify it receives a guest address, confirm internet access, and test that it cannot open the router’s management page or reach trusted devices.

The guest-network design is a policy decision, not merely a second DHCP scope. Decide whether guests may use local DNS, printers, casting devices or only internet access, then express those decisions in rules. Adapt example subnets and aliases to your real network.

Connect Wi-Fi and additional wired devices

Connect the primary LAN port to a switch when you need more wired sockets. Connect a Wi-Fi access point to the switch or directly to a spare routed interface. Put the access point in access-point or bridge mode so OPNsense remains the only router and DHCP authority. For multiple SSIDs, use a VLAN-capable access point and matching switch trunks; assign each SSID to the intended VLAN and apply the corresponding OPNsense policy.

If you use separate physical interfaces instead, connect each to the switch or access point dedicated to that network. Label both ends of every cable. A clear label such as “OPNsense igb2 — guest” prevents a later cable move from bypassing the intended segmentation.

Validate the installation before migrating the house

Test one client on each network before replacing the existing router:

  • Management: the client can reach the OPNsense interface from the trusted LAN, while guest clients cannot reach management addresses unless explicitly permitted.
  • DHCP: clients receive the expected subnet, gateway, DNS servers and lease duration.
  • DNS: names resolve, and the resolver policy behaves as intended.
  • Internet: ordinary web traffic works through WAN, and the WAN address matches the ISP service.
  • Isolation: guest and IoT clients cannot reach trusted hosts or other restricted networks.
  • Failure recovery: you know how to reach the console, reassign interfaces and restore a configuration backup if a rule locks you out.
  • Load: observe CPU, memory, state-table use and interface errors while several clients transfer data or use a VPN.

This is operational guidance, not a test result for any particular mini-PC model. Record your own throughput, latency, temperatures and power readings under the workload you actually care about.

Understand 2.5GbE throughput limits

Each port may negotiate at 2.5Gbps, yet routing performance can be lower once packet size, NAT, firewall rules, VPN encryption, IDS/IPS inspection, traffic shaping and simultaneous connections are included. The slowest component may be the CPU, the NIC driver, the PCIe connection, the storage used for logging, the modem, the switch or the ISP service.

There is no model-specific benchmark established here for an unspecified four-port mini PC. Treat “2.5GbE” as a connectivity specification and verify the real result with a controlled test. Test WAN-to-LAN and LAN-to-LAN separately, repeat with the features you intend to leave enabled, and monitor for dropped packets, rising latency, interface errors and thermal throttling.

Measure power instead of borrowing another appliance’s number

The title’s “low-power” goal is valid only after measurement. Use a wall power meter to record the complete mini PC, adapter and attached accessories. Take readings after the system has been idle long enough to settle, during normal household traffic, and during a sustained transfer or VPN workload. Note whether the access point and switch are included or measured separately.

A 13 W idle figure published for the Netgate 4200 is a vendor-listed value for that appliance, not a measurement of a generic mini PC. Do not substitute it for this build’s consumption, and do not use CPU TDP as whole-system wattage. Cooling, memory, SSD, NICs, power-supply efficiency and firmware settings all affect the wall reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common problems and fixes

The WAN has no address

Check that the modem or ONT is connected to the interface actually assigned as WAN. Confirm whether the ISP requires DHCP, PPPoE, a VLAN tag, a static configuration or a modem reboot after changing the device. Review link speed and interface errors before changing firewall rules.

The LAN client receives no DHCP lease

Verify that the client is on the LAN interface rather than WAN or an unconfigured spare port. Confirm that the interface is enabled, has the intended address and has a DHCP scope. If a managed switch is involved, check the access port’s VLAN and tagging mode.

The wrong port was assigned

Disconnect all but one cable, observe which interface reports link, and repeat the assignment from the console. Correct the mapping before reconnecting the modem and internal switch. Never infer interface order from the chassis printing alone.

Guests can reach trusted devices

Inspect guest-interface rules from top to bottom. Remove broad pass rules that precede isolation rules, block the trusted and management networks explicitly, and retest from a guest client after clearing its old lease.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Throughput is below expectations

Confirm that both endpoints negotiated 2.5GbE and that the switch, cables and ISP service support the target. Test with firewall, VPN and IDS features enabled one at a time to identify the limiting feature. Check CPU utilization, temperatures, driver messages, packet errors and state-table growth. A port link rate is not a routing benchmark.

The system is unstable or noisy

Check temperatures under sustained load, update firmware and the operating system, and verify that the power adapter is correctly rated. If the appliance still throttles or resets, reduce logging or resource-intensive services temporarily and contact the mini-PC vendor about cooling or warranty support.

When a four-port mini PC is the right choice

This design is attractive when you want control over firewall policy, separate networks, local services and future upgrades in a compact appliance. It is less attractive when you need a guaranteed, vendor-supported throughput figure, integrated Wi-Fi, silent operation or a simple plug-and-play setup. Compare candidate hardware on exact NIC chipset and driver support, WAN and inter-interface throughput with your selected features, measured whole-system idle power, thermals, noise, warranty and update support.

Install OPNsense on the SSD, map the ports physically, assign LAN and WAN in the correct order, add only the interfaces and VLANs you can secure, and validate every network before migration. That process turns a generic four-port 2.5GbE box into a maintainable home gateway without pretending that its port labels or another appliance’s power figure prove performance.
