There is no documented Jellyfin plugin that automatically converts a media library into live channels. The supported workflow described in the current Jellyfin and ErsatzTV documentation uses ErsatzTV as an external channel generator. ErsatzTV synchronizes selected Jellyfin libraries, creates scheduled virtual channels, and exposes two feeds: an M3U playlist for channel streams and an XMLTV feed for programme-guide data. Jellyfin then consumes those feeds from Dashboard → Live TV.
This produces an internet-style, 24/7 television experience from media you already own. It does not receive over-the-air broadcasts, and it does not require a physical TV tuner for the library-generated channels.
What this Jellyfin setup actually is
Think of the arrangement as three services with separate jobs:

- Jellyfin remains your media server and playback interface.
- ErsatzTV reads selected Jellyfin libraries, arranges programmes into virtual channels, and publishes channel and guide feeds.
- Jellyfin Live TV imports the M3U and XMLTV feeds so the channels appear alongside other live-TV features.
The M3U feed tells Jellyfin which channels exist and where their streams are. The XMLTV feed supplies programme names, descriptions, times and other guide metadata. They are separate integrations: adding only the playlist creates channels without a useful electronic programme guide (EPG), while adding only XMLTV gives Jellyfin guide data without playable channels.

The channels are virtual streams assembled from your existing library. They should not be confused with a broadcast tuner, an antenna signal or a third-party IPTV subscription.
What you need before starting
A working Jellyfin server
You need the network address of the Jellyfin server and permission to create an API key. The documented path is Dashboard → Advanced → API Keys. Use an account with sufficient administrative rights, and treat the key like a password: do not publish it in screenshots, URLs or public configuration files.
ErsatzTV running on a reachable host
ErsatzTV must be able to reach Jellyfin over your local network or another permitted network route. The two services can run on the same computer, on separate machines, or in containers, provided the relevant addresses and ports are reachable.

Libraries selected for synchronization
Decide which Jellyfin libraries should feed the virtual channels. Synchronizing only the libraries you intend to schedule keeps channel configuration easier to manage and avoids exposing unrelated media to the channel-building service.
Access to the media files
By default, ErsatzTV can stream items through Jellyfin. If you instead configure it to read files directly, both services must be able to access the same shares and mounts. When the path visible to Jellyfin differs from the path visible to ErsatzTV, configure a path replacement that maps the Jellyfin path to ErsatzTV’s local path.
Current installation instructions
Installation commands and version-specific compatibility details are not fixed by the integration documentation. Use the current ErsatzTV installation documentation for your operating system or container platform rather than copying an old command. The ErsatzTV client information also distinguishes an ErsatzTV Legacy line and says it will continue receiving security updates for the foreseeable future, but that statement does not establish a current release number or a universal installation method.

A playback request therefore travels from Jellyfin to the channel stream exposed by ErsatzTV, while the underlying programme comes from media synchronized from Jellyfin.

Step 1: Create a Jellyfin API key
- Sign in to Jellyfin with an administrative account.
- Open Dashboard.
- Go to Advanced → API Keys.
- Create a key with a recognizable name, such as “ErsatzTV”.
- Copy the key immediately and store it in a password manager or a protected service configuration.
You will enter this key, together with the Jellyfin server address, when creating the media source in ErsatzTV. If you later revoke or rotate the key, update the ErsatzTV connection as well.
Step 2: Connect ErsatzTV to Jellyfin
- Open the ErsatzTV administration interface.
- Add a new Jellyfin media source.
- Enter the Jellyfin server address that ErsatzTV can reach. Use the address as seen from the machine running ErsatzTV, not necessarily the address you use from a browser on another device.
- Enter the Jellyfin API key created in the previous step.
- Choose the Jellyfin libraries that ErsatzTV should synchronize.
- Run or save the synchronization, then verify that the expected movies and episodes are visible to ErsatzTV.
If the connection fails, first check the address, port, firewall rules and whether Jellyfin is listening on the network interface reachable by ErsatzTV. A valid API key cannot compensate for a blocked route.
Step 3: Make sure ErsatzTV can play the media
Use Jellyfin streaming
The documented default is for ErsatzTV to stream items through Jellyfin. This is the simplest arrangement when the services do not share a filesystem. It also avoids having to reproduce every library mount inside the ErsatzTV environment.
Use direct filesystem access
Direct access can be useful when both services run on the same host or have identical network mounts. Confirm that:

- The account running ErsatzTV has read permission.
- Container paths are actually mapped into the ErsatzTV container, if containers are involved.
- The path stored by Jellyfin corresponds to the path ErsatzTV can see.
When those paths differ, configure a path replacement. For example, a path that Jellyfin records under one mount point can be translated to the equivalent mount point visible to ErsatzTV. The exact replacement values depend on your hosts and are not universal.

Test one item before building many channels
Verify that ErsatzTV can start a synchronized item before troubleshooting Jellyfin’s tuner. If ErsatzTV cannot read or stream the source media, Jellyfin will show a channel but playback will still fail.
Step 4: Configure virtual channels in ErsatzTV
After synchronization, use ErsatzTV’s channel and scheduling tools to arrange the selected library content into the channels you want. A practical design is to give each channel a clear purpose, such as a genre, a library, a studio collection or a recurring programme block. The channel schedule determines which item plays at each time; Jellyfin does not create that schedule itself.
Keep channel names and numbering stable once you begin using them. Stable identifiers make guide matching easier and reduce confusion when you refresh the M3U and XMLTV feeds. When the channel configuration is ready, copy the M3U playlist URL and the XMLTV guide URL shown by ErsatzTV. Do not substitute one URL for the other: Jellyfin needs both.
Step 5: Add the M3U playlist to Jellyfin
- In Jellyfin, open Dashboard → Live TV.
- Add a tuner device.
- Choose M3U Tuner.
- Enter the M3U URL supplied by ErsatzTV. Jellyfin’s M3U tuner can use a web URL or a local playlist file; use the web URL when ErsatzTV is serving the playlist.
- Save the tuner and allow Jellyfin to load the channel list.
Jellyfin’s M3U settings include a custom user-agent field, a simultaneous-stream limit and an auto-loop option. A custom user agent is relevant when a remote source requires one. Set a simultaneous-stream limit if you need to prevent too many concurrent requests. Enable auto-loop only when a stream does not play correctly without looping; it is not a general performance setting.
After saving, check the tuner status in the Live TV settings. If no channels appear, confirm that the M3U URL is reachable from the Jellyfin server itself, not merely from your desktop browser.
Step 6: Add the XMLTV programme guide
- Remain in Dashboard → Live TV.
- Add a TV Guide Data Provider.
- Choose XMLTV.
- Enter the XMLTV URL supplied by ErsatzTV.
- Save the provider and wait for Jellyfin to import the guide.
Guide data may need to be mapped to the corresponding tuner channels. Match each XMLTV channel identifier with the channel imported from the M3U list rather than relying on similar display names. A mismatch can leave a channel playable but show an empty or incorrect guide.

Jellyfin refreshes guide data periodically and provides manual refresh controls in its Live TV settings. Use a manual refresh after changing schedules, channel identifiers or the XMLTV provider, then allow time for the import to complete.
Verify playback and the guide
- Open Jellyfin’s Live TV area and confirm that the imported channels are listed.
- Start one channel and verify that the stream begins and advances to the next scheduled item.
- Open the guide and check that programme times align with the channel schedule.
- Test from a second client if multiple devices will watch simultaneously.
- Check ErsatzTV and Jellyfin status pages when a channel is listed but will not play.
Testing one channel first isolates problems. If every channel is absent, investigate the M3U tuner or network path. If channels exist but only some fail, investigate the affected media, schedule or path mapping. If playback works but the guide is empty, investigate XMLTV import and channel mapping separately.
Troubleshooting common failures

Jellyfin supports HDHomeRun and M3U tuners, with additional tuner types available through plugins. The ErsatzTV workflow uses the M3U path; it does not require HDHomeRun hardware or another physical tuner.
Security, reliability and maintenance
- Protect the API key. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the Jellyfin API according to that key’s permissions.
- Keep feeds private when appropriate. An M3U endpoint can reveal channel names and stream addresses. Do not expose it to the public internet unless you have deliberately secured the service.
- Use stable network names or reserved addresses. If Jellyfin or ErsatzTV changes address, the connection and feed imports can break.
- Refresh after configuration changes. New channels, renamed channels and schedule changes may require an M3U reload, XMLTV refresh or both.
- Plan for concurrent playback. Each active viewer can consume resources from Jellyfin, ErsatzTV and the storage system. The M3U simultaneous-stream limit can prevent uncontrolled concurrency, but it does not create additional server capacity.
- Recheck documentation after upgrades. ErsatzTV installation steps and product versions can change, and the available material does not establish a permanent version-specific compatibility matrix.
Do you need to buy a tuner, storage or network equipment?
Not for the documented library-to-channel workflow. An existing Jellyfin server, an ErsatzTV installation and access to the media are the core requirements. A physical tuner becomes relevant only when you also want to bring broadcast television into Jellyfin. Additional storage, a dedicated server or faster networking may improve capacity in a particular household, but they are not established prerequisites for creating virtual channels from an existing library.
What this setup cannot do
- It does not turn Jellyfin into an antenna or cable receiver.
- It does not make unavailable media playable; every scheduled item still needs a working stream path.
- It does not guarantee a guide unless the XMLTV feed is added and correctly mapped.
- It does not eliminate the need to maintain both Jellyfin and ErsatzTV configuration.
- It does not provide a universal installation command or version guarantee; those details depend on the current ErsatzTV release and deployment method.
The Bottom Line
Use ErsatzTV as the channel and schedule layer, then add its M3U playlist and XMLTV guide to Jellyfin under Dashboard → Live TV. The result is a set of virtual live channels built from your existing library—not a Jellyfin plugin installation and not broadcast television.
