You can turn a chess diagram in a screenshot, webpage, or ebook into an interactive position by scanning it, checking the recognized board, and opening or copying its FEN into an analysis board. The key step is verification: image recognition can misread a piece or miss game details such as whose turn it is.
How screenshot-to-FEN conversion works
A scanner first has to find the chessboard, then identify what occupies each of its 64 squares and encode that position as FEN. Arrows, highlighted squares, unusual piece designs, a tilted board, clutter around the diagram, or multiple boards in one image can make recognition harder. A scan is a starting point, not proof that the position is correct.
Choose a scanning route for your image
- Phone screenshot or gallery image: Chessvision.ai documents workflows for sharing or uploading screenshots to scan a position, then editing it and sharing its FEN. See its scanner documentation.
- Chessboard on a webpage: Chessvision.ai documents browser scanning for diagrams on web pages. Its browser extension information is at Chessvision.ai.
- Browser-based screenshot workflow: The open-source fenshot project describes recognizing a chess position from a screenshot and opening the result in Lichess analysis or its board editor: fenshot on GitHub.
- Ebook or PDF diagram: Chessvision.ai describes ebook features for scanning chess diagrams. Check the current documentation for support in your reader and platform: Chessvision.ai.
These are documented workflows, not results from a controlled comparison. The best route depends on where the image is and which editing and handoff options you need.

Scan, verify, and open the position
- Start with the complete board. Choose a screenshot or image where all four board edges and every square are visible. Avoid cropping pieces or squares.
- Run the scan. Use the scanner’s upload, share, webpage, or ebook workflow for your image. Chessvision.ai says its scanner can handle some rotation or skew, but recommends a flatter, straighter image when recognition is imperfect.
- Check the board orientation. Confirm that the light and dark squares and the pieces match the diagram’s perspective. A board that is flipped can produce a position that looks plausible but is wrong.
- Compare every piece with the source. Pay special attention to pawns, pieces near the edge, and squares covered by arrows or highlights. Correct any mismatches in the scanner’s editing controls.
- Set the game details you need. Check whose turn it is and any relevant castling rights. These details may not be obvious from the board image, so do not assume the scan inferred them correctly.
- Export or hand off the checked position. Copy or share the FEN, or use the scanner’s supported open-in option. Chessvision.ai documents FEN sharing and a Lichess handoff; fenshot documents opening a result in Lichess analysis or the board editor.
What to compare when choosing a tool

Those descriptions do not establish which scanner is more accurate. Fenshot reports its own evaluation results, including zero wrong tiles on every positive case in its real-screenshot evaluation set, while also saying its legacy model misread as many as 34 tiles on a board. These are project-reported results, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for other images.

Fix a scan that does not match the diagram
- Pieces or squares are missing: Use a less-cropped, straighter image with the full board visible, then scan again. Manually correct any remaining errors in an editor.
- The board is reversed: Change its orientation in the scanner or editor, then compare the position again with the original image.
- The position looks right but analysis behaves unexpectedly: Recheck side to move and castling rights, as well as piece placement. A diagram may not show all game-state details needed for analysis.
- The scanner cannot read the image: Enter the position manually in a board editor or correct the generated FEN there. A Lichess community forum thread titled “Feature Request: Convert an image to FEN using AI, and import to Board Editor” discusses image-to-FEN phrasing and manual board-editor entry; it is a community discussion, not official documentation of an automatic Lichess image-recognition feature: Lichess forum thread.
Does converting a screenshot require a physical chess product?
No physical chess set, clock, or camera is required for the described task. The workflow uses an image and software to create a digital position; you can then analyze or play through it in a compatible board or analysis tool.
