The reliable workflow is: inspect and repair the scan, then choose between preserving it as a mesh for direct slicing or rebuilding it as editable CAD. Keep the mesh when the captured organic surface is the priority. Reconstruct the part in CAD when dimensions, mating features, holes, or future design changes matter. A mesh-to-solid conversion can help with downstream operations, but it does not automatically create a clean parametric design.
Choose the result before editing the scan
A 3D scanner normally produces a polygon mesh: a set of vertices, edges, and triangular or polygonal faces. That is different from the feature-based solids used by most CAD systems. Your intended result determines how much work is sensible.
| Goal | Best route | What you get | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Print an organic object that already matches the captured shape | Repair the mesh and send it to a slicer | A printable surface with the scan’s shape preserved | Dimensions and features remain difficult to edit precisely |
| Make a replacement or mechanical part with known dimensions | Use the scan as reference geometry and rebuild it in CAD | A cleaner, editable solid with designed features | Reconstruction takes longer and may not reproduce every scanned irregularity |
| Perform a few CAD operations on an existing scan | Repair, then convert the mesh selectively | A solid or surface body for additional operations | Faceted conversion can create many mesh-derived faces and is not the same as parametric modeling |
Do not treat conversion as a universal shortcut. Autodesk Fusion distinguishes faceted conversion, which retains individual mesh faces, from prismatic conversion, which attempts to group inferred prismatic features. A watertight mesh can convert to a solid; a non-watertight mesh converts to a surface body and may need further surface work.

What makes a scan printable?
Before modeling or slicing, verify that the mesh represents one coherent, closed volume. Blender’s 3D Print Toolbox describes a watertight mesh as one whose surface is closed everywhere. Its Solid check expects each edge to connect to exactly two faces; a boundary edge usually indicates a hole.

- Holes and boundary edges: Open borders can cause a slicer to interpret the model as a surface rather than a volume.
- Flipped normals: Faces pointing in inconsistent directions can make inside and outside ambiguous.
- Non-manifold edges: An edge connected to more or fewer than two faces often indicates overlapping or incomplete geometry.
- Self-intersections: Interpenetrating faces can produce missing or unexpected regions in the slice.
- Duplicate, degenerate, or empty faces: Zero-area triangles and duplicate shells add errors without adding useful shape.
- Stray scan geometry: Tables, floor patches, background objects, or disconnected shells may be printed accidentally.
- Thin regions: A scanner may capture a surface that is thinner than the nozzle or wall width your slicer can represent.
Run these checks before assuming that an export is ready. A model can look correct in a viewport while still failing a solid or slice analysis.
Import the mesh and confirm scale
Fusion import
In Fusion, use Insert Mesh to import STL, OBJ, or 3MF data. After insertion, compare the model with at least one known measurement from the scanned object. Check the document units and the mesh’s orientation before repairing it; correcting scale after rebuilding features can invalidate sketches and dimensions.
- Open a new or existing Fusion design.
- Choose Insert > Insert Mesh.
- Select the STL, OBJ, or 3MF file and place the mesh in the workspace.
- Set the correct units and inspect a known length with the measuring tools.
- Rotate the mesh so its functional faces and likely print orientation are easy to identify.
Blender inspection
In Blender, import the mesh in the format produced by your scanner, select the object, and enable the 3D Print Toolbox. The toolbox can report non-manifold edges, bad contiguous edges, intersections, degenerate faces or edges, thin areas, and overhangs. Use those reports to locate problems instead of applying an indiscriminate cleanup to the whole object.
Keep an untouched copy of the original scan. Repairs can remove small details or alter the boundary, and the original is the only reliable reference for checking whether a change was intentional.
Repair the mesh with the least change necessary
Repair is a balance: a more aggressive operation may produce a slicable shell while erasing internal structures or fine surface detail. Always preview the result and compare it with the unrepaired mesh.

Fusion repair options
| Fusion operation | Use it when | Documented behavior and caution |
|---|---|---|
| Close Holes | The mesh has identifiable openings | Autodesk describes it as making the fewest changes, so it is the preferred first option when the hole can be closed without redesigning the surrounding surface. |
| Stitch and Remove | Adjacent mesh regions need to be joined or unwanted pieces removed | Inspect the resulting seam and verify that the intended shell remains connected. |
| One Touch Fix | You need an automated attempt on common defects | Confirm every change; an automatic repair is not proof that the geometry is unchanged. |
| Wrap | The mesh is severely damaged and a new outer skin is acceptable | It makes more substantial changes and destroys inner structures. |
| Rebuild | You need a reconstructed outer form from a problematic scan | It is also a high-change operation and destroys inner structures. |
After a Fusion repair, rerun the analysis and inspect sections or silhouettes. If a hole carries functional information, such as a passage or mounting opening, do not let a blanket wrap operation seal it without recreating that feature deliberately.
Blender cleanup
The 3D Print Toolbox can identify defects and its Make Manifold operation attempts to correct normals, fill holes, and remove empty edges or faces. Treat this as a repair attempt, not a guarantee. Recheck the mesh afterward, inspect the repaired area in solid and wireframe views, and compare critical dimensions with the original.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Route A: preserve the scan and prepare it for a slicer
Choose this route when the scan itself is the desired shape, especially for organic forms, figurines, casts, ergonomic surfaces, or objects whose irregularities are part of what you want to reproduce.
- Delete unwanted scan material. Remove floor planes, turntable fragments, loose shells, and disconnected objects. Keep only the component you intend to print.
- Make the shell printable. Close genuine gaps, correct normals, remove self-intersections where possible, and verify that the object is one coherent volume.
- Check scale and units again. A correctly shaped scan can still be 10 times too large or too small after import if the scanner and modeling software used different unit assumptions.
- Set the print orientation. Place the largest stable face on the build plate when practical, but consider surface quality, support removal, strength, and visible seams as well as stability.
- Inspect thin features. Ears, fins, walls, and scan-captured sheets may be thinner than the slicer can represent. Thicken or redesign them if they disappear in the preview.
- Export the repaired mesh. Use the format required by the next application. STL is widely supported; OBJ can carry additional mesh information; 3MF is useful when the receiving workflow supports it.
- Open the file in the slicer for the actual printer. Review repair notices, build-plate placement, the layer preview, supports, and any disconnected or missing regions.
Do not rely on the viewport alone. A slicer’s layer-by-layer preview is where you can see whether a thin wall vanishes, a hole closes unexpectedly, or support material blocks a critical surface.
Route B: rebuild the object as editable CAD
Reconstruction is usually the better choice for a mechanical or replacement part. The scan becomes a measuring reference rather than the final geometry. This lets you replace noisy triangles with planes, cylinders, fillets, holes, and dimensions that can be edited later.

Create sections from the scan
Fusion provides mesh section sketches for taking cross-sections through a mesh. Select planes that expose the important profiles: for example, a longitudinal section for overall curvature, transverse sections for width changes, and sections through mounting or mating features.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Insert and scale the mesh as described above.
- Choose a construction plane at a meaningful location on the part.
- Create a mesh section sketch through that plane.
- Repeat at additional stations where the shape changes or a functional dimension must be controlled.
- Use the resulting section curves as sketch references.
- Fit sketch curves to the sections, then constrain them with the dimensions and relationships the finished part needs.
Rebuild functional features, not every triangle
Use section curves to establish the envelope, then model the features that make the part useful: mounting holes, locating bosses, flat interfaces, shafts, ribs, and controlled wall thicknesses. A scan may contain noise, small dents, and alignment errors that should not become permanent CAD features.
Anchor the reconstruction to known measurements. If two scanned faces should mate with another component, give the CAD model an explicit datum and dimension rather than copying a potentially noisy distance from the mesh. Preserve the scan in a hidden or separate component so you can compare the rebuilt body against the captured surface.
When mesh-to-solid conversion is appropriate
Conversion sits between direct slicing and full reconstruction. Use it when you need a solid or surface body for a limited operation, such as cutting away a region, combining the result with another body, or checking fit.
Faceted conversion
Faceted conversion preserves the individual mesh faces. It can represent the scan closely, but a dense scan may produce a very large number of faces, making selection, filleting, and other CAD operations slow or difficult.

Prismatic conversion
Prismatic conversion groups inferred prismatic features. It can produce a more manageable result when the object contains planar, cylindrical, or other mechanically recognizable regions, but it may not represent free-form scanned surfaces as faithfully.
Check watertightness first. Fusion documents that watertight meshes convert to solid bodies, while non-watertight meshes convert to surface bodies. A surface body is not automatically a printable solid; you may need to stitch, patch, or otherwise close it before export.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare the final model for printing
Size and orientation
Confirm the finished dimensions in the CAD document or slicer, not just the apparent viewport size. Orient the model according to the printer’s build volume and the part’s functional loads. A direction that minimizes supports may produce weaker layer alignment, while an orientation that protects a visible surface may require more support material.
Walls, small features, and overhangs
Thin scan features can be missed by a slicer. Examine the preview at the intended layer height and nozzle width, and thicken or redesign features that do not generate toolpaths. Overhangs may require supports; inspect where supports touch the model and whether they can be removed without damaging the surface.
Fusion additive preparation
Fusion’s additive workflow includes printer or machine selection and mesh-refinement controls such as surface deviation, normal deviation, maximum edge length, and aspect ratio. These controls affect how a model is refined for downstream manufacturing. The appropriate values depend on the target machine, material, and slicer, so do not copy a universal setting into every job.

Final slicer checks
- Confirm the slicer reports the intended dimensions and units.
- Ensure the model sits on the build plate rather than floating or intersecting it unintentionally.
- Check that all intended cavities, holes, and separate bodies appear in the layer preview.
- Look for missing thin walls, isolated islands, unexpected filled regions, and unsupported overhangs.
- Review supports and brim or raft choices for the selected material and printer.
- Save the slicer project or exported machine file only after the preview matches the intended part.
Common failure modes and fixes
The slicer says the model is not manifold
Return to the mesh editor, run the toolbox checks, and locate boundary edges, non-manifold edges, and self-intersections. Close only the holes that should be closed, remove stray shells, correct normals, and rerun the checks. If an automated repair changes the silhouette, undo it and repair the affected region manually or rebuild that portion in CAD.
The converted result is a surface, not a solid
The input mesh was probably not watertight. Recheck for open boundaries and disconnected shells, then stitch or patch the surface. If the scan is too damaged, use section sketches to reconstruct the part instead of repeatedly wrapping it.
The model is the wrong size
Measure a known feature, verify document units, and check the import scale factor. Correct the scale before creating sketches, holes, or other dependent features. Keep a note of the measurement used so the correction is reproducible.
Fine details disappear in the slice preview
The feature may be thinner than the slicer can express at the chosen nozzle and layer settings, or the scan may contain insufficient geometry. Increase the feature’s modeled thickness, simplify it into a printable form, or change orientation if that makes the feature easier to resolve.
Repair removed an important cavity or internal structure
Wrap and Rebuild are documented as high-change operations that destroy inner structures. Restore the original scan, use a lower-change repair such as Close Holes where appropriate, or reconstruct the cavity explicitly in CAD.
CAD operations are painfully slow
A dense faceted conversion may contain thousands or millions of mesh-derived faces. Reduce unnecessary scan geometry, isolate the region needed for the operation, or rebuild the functional shape from sections instead of converting every triangle.
CAD or slicer: a practical decision checklist
- Choose the slicer route if the scan’s irregular organic surface is the finished shape and you mainly need a printable shell.
- Choose the CAD route if the object must mate with other parts, meet explicit dimensions, contain editable holes or interfaces, or be revised later.
- Choose selective conversion if you need a solid or surface body for a limited CAD operation but do not need a fully parametric redesign.
- Regardless of route, keep the original scan, verify scale, repair with the least destructive method, and inspect the final slicer preview.
The Blender manual’s concise rule is: “In order to correctly slice a mesh, it needs to be ‘watertight’, meaning that the surface is closed everywhere.” That condition is necessary for dependable slicing, but it does not decide whether preserving the scan or rebuilding it in CAD is the better engineering choice.
