You can turn a sketch, concept image, or photos of a real object into a 3D model with AI—but the right workflow depends on what you are starting from. Use image-to-3D generation to interpret a design; use photogrammetry to reconstruct an existing object from many views. In either case, treat the first model as a draft: unseen surfaces are inferred, and the asset needs inspection and preparation before production use.

How do I turn a 2D image into a 3D model?

First decide whether you want to create a model from a design or reproduce a physical object. Those are different problems: a concept image gives a generator a visual target, while photos taken around an object provide evidence for reconstructing its actual shape.

Starting point Approach What the input tells the system
Sketch, concept art, or a single image Image-to-3D generation The visible design and appearance; hidden geometry must be inferred.
Existing physical object Photogrammetry from multiple photos Overlapping views of the real object, provided the capture covers its surfaces and has reasonable lighting.
Several reference images of one designed object Multi-view image-to-3D generation More than one angle, which can help constrain sides that a single view does not show.

Prepare a useful image reference

Choose a clear image with one main subject and a simple background. Meshy recommends a reference image at least 512 × 512 pixels; that is the vendor’s guidance, not a guaranteed quality threshold. Remove a distracting background or improve the image before generation if the subject is difficult to distinguish.

If the tool accepts multiple references, use views of the same object under similar lighting. Front, side, back, and three-quarter views can make the intended form clearer than a single picture. Meshy documents image-to-3D for concept art, photos, and hand-drawn sketches, and also describes a multi-view mode. See Meshy’s documentation for current input guidance and features.

Generate, then inspect from every angle

Generate a first pass and rotate it all the way around. A 2D image does not encode the back or other hidden surfaces, so a model made from one view may invent details or omit features there. If those surfaces matter, provide additional views rather than treating a single-image result as a faithful reconstruction. Adobe Research describes the underlying challenge plainly: “It’s a hard problem because the world is 3D, but we take photographs that compress that 3D information into 2D images,” as Principal Scientist Kalyan Sunkavalli put it.

Meshy describes its Standard mode as prioritizing detail and Smart Topology as intended for optimized, game-ready or real-time use. These are the vendor’s stated distinctions, not independent comparative test results. Choose based on the destination and inspect the geometry instead of assuming a mode name guarantees suitability.

Can I turn a drawing into a 3D model?

Yes. An image-to-3D generator can use a hand-drawn sketch or concept art as a starting reference. The result is an interpretation of the drawing, not an automatic recovery of dimensions and hidden structure that the drawing never specified.

  • Make the silhouette and important features easy to read.
  • Separate the subject from a busy background where possible.
  • Provide additional views if the back, sides, or proportions need to match a specific design.
  • Expect to refine ambiguous areas manually, especially where the drawing uses perspective, overlap, or stylized proportions.

For a design that needs to match a production brief, review the generated shape against the reference before moving on to materials. Adobe Research Principal Scientist Kalyan Sunkavalli notes that “A 3D model has the flexibility to let users get the exact angle and viewpoint they want.” That flexibility is useful only after the model’s geometry has been checked.

How do I make a 3D model from photos of a real object?

For an existing object, photograph it from multiple angles and reconstruct it with photogrammetry. Adobe recommends photos covering every angle, balanced lighting, and avoiding harsh shadows; it also says a smartphone camera can work. An optional tripod can make repeated shots more consistent, but it is not required.

  1. Plan the coverage. Capture enough overlapping views to show every surface you need, including the top, sides, and back. Keep the object in a consistent position and avoid changing the lighting between views.
  2. Use balanced light. Avoid harsh shadows that hide shape or create misleading contrast. Check that important details remain visible across the set.
  3. Run the reconstruction. Import the photographs into a photogrammetry workflow and generate the initial mesh and textures using the chosen application’s current instructions.
  4. Review masking and geometry. Adobe’s documented object-capture workflow calls for checking masking and reviewing the reconstructed mesh before export. Look for missing regions, unwanted background geometry, and surface defects.
  5. Export for the destination. Confirm that the exported model’s scale, geometry, texture maps, and file format suit the application where it will be used.

Photogrammetry is based on what the photos capture. If an area is hidden, poorly lit, or absent from the coverage, do not assume the reconstruction has reliable geometry there.

What to check Why it matters
Input support Confirm whether the tool accepts a single image, a sketch or concept image, or multiple views of one object. Meshy documents these image-to-3D inputs; Tripo’s official API page lists generation from single images or multi-view inputs.
Unseen-side evidence A single view leaves hidden surfaces unspecified. Multi-view input can add evidence for those areas, though the generated result still needs checking.
Topology and intended use Determine whether the output is meant for detailed presentation or optimized real-time use, and inspect the actual mesh for the project’s requirements.
Finishing features Check for relevant texture generation, mesh editing, UV handling, rigging, animation, and export options. Tripo documents texture generation, mesh editing, rigging, and animation retargeting as post-processing options on its official API page.
Destination compatibility Verify file format, UV layout, material maps, texture resolution, and the target renderer or engine’s conventions.
Commercial terms Read the current license and plan terms directly. Meshy’s documentation describes CC BY 4.0 on its free plan and private licensing on Pro and above; verify those volatile terms in the current Meshy documentation before commercial use.

How do I make an AI-generated 3D model usable in Blender or a game engine?

Import the model into the application where it will be finished and assess it as geometry, not just as a convincing image. A model can look plausible from one angle while having problems that appear only when rotated, edited, animated, or rendered.

Inspect the mesh

  • Silhouette and proportions: Compare the shape from front, side, and three-quarter views against the reference.
  • Disconnected or fused parts: Check that separate components are not accidentally joined and that intended connections are present.
  • Surface artifacts: Look for holes, spikes, uneven patches, or unwanted fragments.
  • Topology: Decide whether the mesh is appropriate for the next task, such as editing, deformation, or real-time rendering; repair or rebuild areas that are not.
  • UVs: Check that UV coordinates exist and that the layout works for the textures and edits you need.

Texture and prepare materials

Adobe Substance 3D Painter supports projects that store the model and texturing information. Its documentation covers texture sets based on material definitions, UV options, normal-map formats, and automatic UV generation when an imported model lacks UVs.

For material creation, Substance 3D Sampler’s Image to Material feature derives PBR maps from one input image. Adobe describes its AI-powered approach as generating normal, height, and roughness maps while removing shadows or highlights from albedo. Its B2M workflow can procedurally create base color, normal, metallic, roughness, and ambient occlusion maps; Adobe cautions that B2M may be less accurate but works across a wider range of images. Consult the current Substance 3D Painter documentation and Substance 3D Sampler documentation for the applicable options.

Validate the handoff

  • Confirm the model’s scale and orientation in the target project.
  • Check geometry and UVs after export and again after import.
  • Verify that the required material maps are present and connected correctly.
  • Match the normal-map convention to the destination. Adobe documents DirectX and OpenGL normal-map formats and notes default conventions for Unreal Engine and Unity.
  • Test the file in the intended application or engine; export support alone does not guarantee the asset will behave correctly there.

The right delivery settings depend on the target application and renderer, so identify that destination before finalizing the asset.

What does AI add—and what still needs an artist?

Generation can turn a visual reference into a draft model more directly than building every form from scratch, but it does not remove the need to decide what the model should be. The picture supplies only its visible evidence; the creator still judges whether inferred geometry, proportions, topology, textures, and export settings meet the intended use. Adobe Research Scientist Hao Tan described the goal as making this capability available to creators: “Our goal was to provide this kind of capacity for everyone who wants to generate their own 3D content.”

Use the generated model as a starting point, then revise it to fit the brief. No controlled same-input comparison establishes that Meshy, Tripo, or Adobe’s products consistently produce better results than one another, and output quality depends on the reference and intended use.
