DLSS 5 tuning starts with one control: the optional DLSS Neural Rendering switch in a supported game’s graphics menu. Turn it on, compare the same scene with identical surrounding settings, and then tune Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction separately. Do not look for universal “structure,” “tone,” or “masking” sliders: NVIDIA documents those as developer controls, and most games will not expose them to players.
What “DLSS 5 settings” means in a game
NVIDIA calls DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. It is a neural-rendering stage that uses a frame’s color data and motion vectors to add lighting and material effects, including subsurface scattering, contact shadows, and material–light interactions. It is different from the other technologies grouped under the DLSS name:
| Feature | Primary job | How it relates to DLSS 5 |
|---|---|---|
| DLSS 5 / 3D-Guided Neural Rendering | Adds neural-rendered lighting and material effects | The feature this guide tunes; NVIDIA says it can run alongside the other features |
| Super Resolution | Reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower internal render | Changes detail, sharpness and GPU workload independently of DLSS 5 |
| Frame Generation | Creates additional displayed frames | Changes apparent smoothness and latency behavior, not the underlying lighting effects |
| Ray Reconstruction | Uses AI to reconstruct ray-traced effects | Relevant when a game offers ray tracing; it is a separate switch |
| DLAA | Anti-aliasing at native resolution | Not an upscaling mode and not a DLSS 5 control |
In the player-facing menu, NVIDIA’s FAQ says the option is named DLSS Neural Rendering. NVIDIA also says it is optional, so a game that implements it should provide an on/off choice. The exact menu location, available modes and interaction with other graphics options are determined by the game developer.

Check compatibility before changing a setting
Local GPU support
NVIDIA’s compatibility table currently lists DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering for GeForce RTX 50 Series. The same table marks RTX 40, RTX 30 and RTX 20 Series as unsupported for this feature. A compatible card is necessary for local rendering, but it cannot add DLSS 5 to a game that has not integrated it.
Use NVIDIA’s maintained feature page for the current hardware list: NVIDIA DLSS Technology. Hardware and game support can change, so check the page and the game’s own patch notes rather than relying on an old screenshot or forum post.
Cloud access
NVIDIA’s September 3, 2026 FAQ also lists GeForce NOW Ultimate streaming from RTX 5080 rigs as a supported access path. Cloud availability still depends on the service catalog, the game version and regional service conditions. Streaming support does not mean that every locally installed GPU supports the feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGame integration
Install the current game update and graphics driver through their official release channels. Then open the game’s graphics or display settings and search for DLSS Neural Rendering. NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 support for NBA 2K27 on September 3, 2026, but that is an example of availability at that date, not a permanent list of supported titles.
Read the game’s support notes if the option is missing. A supported RTX 50 card and a current driver do not guarantee that a title has shipped the required integration.
A repeatable DLSS 5 tuning procedure
The most reliable “preset” is a controlled comparison in the game you actually play. Use the following procedure whenever you install a new title or an update changes its rendering menu.

- Record your baseline. Note display resolution, refresh rate, graphics preset, ray-tracing state, Super Resolution mode, Frame Generation state, Ray Reconstruction state and any frame-rate cap. Save a screenshot of the settings page if the game has many interdependent options.
- Choose a repeatable scene. Use a save point, benchmark loop or a quiet section that contains the kinds of surfaces and lighting you care about: faces, foliage, glossy materials, dark shadows and moving objects. Avoid comparing two unrelated scenes.
- Keep everything except DLSS Neural Rendering unchanged. Run the scene with the option off, then on. Observe the same objects and lighting in both passes. If the game requires a restart or shader compilation, allow it to finish before judging the image.
- Check your target, not just the average. Measure or observe frame-time consistency during traversal, combat and camera movement. A higher average that produces distracting stutter is usually a worse result than a slightly lower but stable frame rate.
- Change one neighboring feature at a time. If Super Resolution, Frame Generation or Ray Reconstruction is available, return to your chosen DLSS Neural Rendering state and then test only one of those switches. This isolates which control changed detail, latency, ghosting or lighting.
- Repeat at your real output resolution. An image that looks clean at 1080p may reveal reconstruction artifacts at 4K, while a setting that is acceptable on a television may look soft on a close desktop monitor. Judge the resolution, refresh rate and viewing distance you actually use.
- Save the result and retest after updates. Game integrations, neural models and menu options can change. Keep a short note of your chosen state so you can reproduce the comparison after a patch.
This is a practical method, not a vendor-prescribed benchmark. There is no official universal DLSS 5 intensity number that can be copied from one game or GPU to another.
How to balance image quality and frame rate
Start with DLSS Neural Rendering on versus off
Use side-by-side screenshots or repeated toggling in the same scene. Look for changes in contact shadows under characters and objects, the softness of skin or translucent materials, reflections and the way light interacts with rough or glossy surfaces. Also inspect motion: a single paused frame can hide temporal artifacts that appear while the camera or an object moves.
If the visual improvement is subtle but the frame-time cost is unacceptable on your system, leave the option off. Because NVIDIA describes the feature as optional, there is no requirement to enable it merely because the hardware and game support it.
Set Super Resolution separately
Super Resolution controls the internal rendering workload and reconstruction behavior. Compare its available modes at the same output resolution while keeping DLSS Neural Rendering fixed. Lower internal resolutions generally provide more performance headroom but can make fine geometry, hair, foliage, text and distant objects less stable. Higher-quality modes generally preserve more detail at a higher GPU cost.
Use the mode that meets your frame-time target without forcing DLSS 5 to compensate for an image that is already too soft. If the game offers a native-resolution or DLAA path, include it as an image-quality reference, remembering that it may require substantially more rendering work.
Treat Frame Generation as a separate smoothness decision
Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames; it does not replace the base frames produced by the game. Compare it on and off after you have selected DLSS Neural Rendering and Super Resolution. Judge camera pans, fast turning and input response, not only the frame-rate counter. A high displayed rate can coexist with an underlying frame rate that is too low for your preferred responsiveness.

Test Ray Reconstruction only with ray tracing enabled
Ray Reconstruction matters when the title uses ray-traced effects and exposes the option. Hold DLSS Neural Rendering, Super Resolution and Frame Generation constant, then compare Ray Reconstruction on and off in scenes with reflections, indirect lighting and shadows. Keep the state that gives the best compromise between clarity, stability and frame time for your target.
Choosing a result for different priorities
| Priority | Comparison order | What to accept |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum visual effects | DLSS Neural Rendering on; then test the highest-quality Super Resolution mode; evaluate Ray Reconstruction with ray tracing | Small performance costs are acceptable if frame times remain stable at the display’s refresh target |
| Stable competitive play | Establish a frame-time target first; test Neural Rendering on and off; favor the setting that avoids dips; evaluate Frame Generation separately | Consistent base-frame delivery and predictable input response over a higher counter value |
| Balanced single-player play | Choose a Super Resolution mode that preserves fine detail; compare Neural Rendering; then test Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction independently | A visually clean image with enough headroom for busy scenes and traversal |
| Limited GPU headroom | Check whether Neural Rendering adds worthwhile effects; prioritize an acceptable Super Resolution mode and a stable cap | Turn optional effects off when they cause repeated frame-time spikes or distracting artifacts |
These are decision frameworks, not universal presets. A city scene, a dark cave and a brightly lit arena can stress different parts of the renderer, so validate the choice in more than one representative location.
What NVIDIA’s published numbers do—and do not—prove
NVIDIA’s September 3, 2026 FAQ says a 5× performance gain since the initial March announcement had been achieved, with further optimization expected. That is NVIDIA’s development claim; it is not a promise that every game, GPU or player will receive five times the frame rate.

A September 3 driver announcement reports 370 FPS at 4K, Ultra settings with ray tracing on a GeForce RTX 5090 in NBA 2K27 with DLSS enabled. The same passage describes DLSS 5 together with Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation, so the figure cannot be attributed to DLSS 5 alone and is not an independent controlled benchmark. Read the announcement here: GeForce Game Ready Driver 616.64: DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27, Onimusha & Dawnwalker.
No independent, controlled cross-game DLSS 5 comparison or universal player preset is established by those figures. Use your own repeatable scene and your own frame-time target rather than converting a vendor demonstration into a guaranteed result.
Developer controls versus player controls
NVIDIA’s launch announcement explains that DLSS 5 can use artistic controls such as model selection, structure intensity, tone intensity and masking. They allow a studio to decide where and how neural effects appear in its assets and lighting pipeline. They are not documented as universal game-menu sliders.

For players, the safe rule is simple:
- Use DLSS Neural Rendering when the game exposes it.
- Do not infer that a missing structure, tone or masking control is hidden or broken.
- Follow a title’s own documentation if it exposes additional options, because their meanings and ranges are game-specific.
- Do not copy a numerical intensity value from a different title; NVIDIA’s player-facing material does not establish a universal scale.
In NVIDIA’s March 16, 2026 launch announcement, Bethesda Game Studios studio head and executive producer Todd Howard said: “With DLSS 5 the artistic style and detail shine through without being held back by the traditional limits of real-time rendering.” That is a developer statement hosted by NVIDIA, not an independent measurement. The announcement is available at NVIDIA DLSS 5 Delivers AI-Powered Breakthrough In Visual Fidelity For Games.

Troubleshooting missing options and poor results
The DLSS Neural Rendering option is absent
- Confirm the game is patched to a version that lists DLSS 5 support.
- Confirm the local GPU is an RTX 50 Series model, or that you are using a supported GeForce NOW Ultimate RTX 5080 stream.
- Install the current graphics driver through NVIDIA’s official channel and restart the game.
- Check whether the option appears only under an advanced graphics, ray-tracing or restart-required menu.
- Look at the title’s support notes. A compatible GPU cannot enable a feature that the game has not integrated.
The image looks soft or shimmers
First hold DLSS Neural Rendering constant and test Super Resolution modes at the same output resolution. Inspect fine geometry, foliage, hair and text while moving the camera. If the artifact follows a reconstruction mode, change that mode rather than blaming DLSS 5. A higher-quality mode, native rendering or DLAA may improve detail at additional GPU cost.
Frame rate is high but play feels uneven
Check frame-time graphs, busy-scene behavior and your frame cap. Test Frame Generation separately from the base rendering options. If the underlying frame delivery is unstable, reduce the most expensive option or set a cap that the system can sustain instead of chasing a peak counter reading.
An update changed the appearance
Repeat the same-scene comparison after the patch. Rendering models, integration code and menu defaults can change, so a previous screenshot is not proof that the new behavior is incorrect. Record the game version and driver when you make a comparison.
When an upgrade or cloud stream is relevant
If your existing GPU is an RTX 20, 30 or 40 Series model, NVIDIA’s current table does not list it as compatible with DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. Moving to an RTX 50 Series card is therefore a hardware requirement for local DLSS 5 use, not a routine tuning recommendation. The purchase still will not help in a title that lacks integration.
GeForce NOW Ultimate streaming from RTX 5080 rigs is another path NVIDIA lists as supported. Consider it only if the game is available through the service and your connection can deliver the latency and image quality you require. Service catalogs and regional availability can change.
Quick checklist
- Verify the game’s current DLSS 5 support and the game version.
- Verify RTX 50 Series local hardware or a supported RTX 5080 cloud stream.
- Find the exact in-game label: DLSS Neural Rendering.
- Compare on and off in the same repeatable scene.
- Keep resolution, preset, ray tracing and frame cap unchanged during that comparison.
- Test Super Resolution, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction one at a time.
- Judge motion, frame times and input response at your real output resolution.
- Ignore developer-only intensity and masking controls unless the specific game documents them for players.
- Recheck after game or driver updates.
