To try a Nintendo Switch game, open Nintendo eShop, search for the title (or browse Nintendo’s current games-with-free-demos catalogue), open its product page, and choose the demo download option when one is offered. If you decide to buy it, return to that same listing, select the full-game purchase option, complete checkout with the Nintendo Account that will own the game, and let the console download it. A demo is not guaranteed for every title, and a Game Trial is a different, time-limited program.

What you need before downloading anything

A free demo is available only when that particular game’s Nintendo eShop listing offers one. Nintendo’s US catalogue is a changing list, so a title can be added or removed over time. You can use the catalogue to discover games, but the product page is the final check for current availability and the exact download button.

Nintendo’s purchase guidance for the Americas says a digital download requires all of the following:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  • A Nintendo Switch system and access to Nintendo eShop.
  • A Nintendo Account signed in on the account that will make the purchase.
  • An active internet connection.
  • Enough free memory on the console or an installed microSD card for the game’s listed download size.

Exact availability, prices, payment methods, interface labels, demos, and trial periods can differ by country. The instructions below use the US-facing eShop flow; use your own region’s eShop listing when a screen or offer differs.

Choose the account carefully

The profile you select when opening eShop determines which Nintendo Account is used for the transaction. If several people share a Switch, decide in advance which account should own the digital game. A later profile can play software on the console under Nintendo’s account rules, but the purchase itself remains associated with the account that completed checkout. Selecting the wrong profile can make a legitimate purchase appear unavailable later.

Demo or Game Trial: check which one you are getting

Nintendo uses two separate terms. A normal demo is a limited version or sample of a game offered from that game’s product page. A Game Trial is the complete game made available to eligible Nintendo Switch Online members for a limited period. Nintendo Support defines it as “A Game Trial is a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.”

Feature Standard demo Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial
What you play A demo experience selected by the publisher; its content and limits are title-specific. The full version of the game during the active trial window.
How long it works The listing determines the demo’s terms; there is no universal duration. Access ends when the advertised, title-specific trial period ends.
Membership The standard demo instructions do not state a Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement. For the US, Canada, and Mexico download flow, Nintendo requires an account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Where to verify The individual game listing and the games-with-free-demos catalogue. The game’s eShop page and Nintendo’s Game Trials FAQ.

Do not assume that a Game Trial is a permanent demo, or that every game in the catalogue has the same amount of playable content. Read the offer shown for the title and your region before downloading. A Game Trial can be useful when you want to sample the entire game, but it is still temporary access rather than ownership.

How to find and download a free demo

Option 1: start with Nintendo’s catalogue

  1. On a phone or computer, open Nintendo’s US games-with-free-demos page.
  2. Find the game you want and open its store listing. Because the catalogue changes, confirm that the listing still displays a demo offer.
  3. Choose the link or action that opens the title in Nintendo eShop, then continue on the Switch if the page directs you there.

The catalogue is useful for discovery, not a promise that a demo remains available. If you cannot find a title there, search directly in eShop; regional catalogues can differ.

Option 2: search directly in Nintendo eShop

  1. Turn on the Switch and select the Nintendo eShop icon from the HOME Menu.
  2. Choose the Nintendo Account profile you want to use.
  3. Use eShop’s search function to enter the game’s name. Select the matching result rather than a similarly named add-on, bundle, or soundtrack.
  4. Open the product page and inspect the available actions. A game with a demo will show a demo download option; if only a price or purchase button appears, that listing is not currently offering a standard demo in that region.

Start the download from the product page

Select the listing’s demo download action and follow the on-screen confirmation. Button wording can change between eShop versions and regions, so use the action that explicitly identifies the free demo. The demo will appear on the HOME Menu after the download begins or completes. Download time depends on your connection and the size shown by the listing.

Keep the Switch connected while the download runs. You can usually leave the console on or place it in sleep mode with an internet connection; if the connection drops, the download may pause until service returns. The listing’s displayed size is the useful figure for planning storage, because there is no standard size shared by all demos or games.

If the page says Game Trial instead of demo, stop and check the membership and time-limit information in the previous table. In the Americas flow documented by Nintendo, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for that download.

Download a demo again after deleting it

Deleting a demo does not necessarily end access. Nintendo says most demos can be found again in eShop and downloaded again. Open eShop with the same profile, search for the game, open its listing, and select the available redownload option. If the title no longer shows a demo, its offer may have changed or ended in your region; the current listing controls what can be downloaded.

What to check while you are trying the demo

Use the demo to decide whether the game suits you, but treat the demo’s boundaries as title-specific. Publishers choose which levels, characters, modes, save features, and playtime are included. The eShop page or the game itself should explain any transfer or purchase information; do not assume that progress, saves, or downloadable content will carry into the full release unless the title explicitly says so.

$50 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • This item can be redeemed on eShop only. This item cannot be redeemed on the Wii Shop
  • The perfect gift for anyone who loves to play—including you. Choose from over 1,000 new, classic and indie games – delivered directly to your Nintendo Switch, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

Pay attention to the practical parts of the experience: controls, performance, visual presentation, text size, difficulty, and whether the available mode is the one you care about. A short sample cannot establish how the entire game works, so read the product description for the publisher’s stated limits rather than treating the demo as a complete review.

A normal demo is free to download, so you do not need to add funds merely to try it. A payment method becomes relevant only when you decide to purchase the full game or another paid item.

Buy and download the full digital game

Purchase from the Switch eShop

  1. Return to Nintendo eShop and open the same game’s product page. You can search for the title again from the eShop home screen.
  2. Confirm that the page is for the full game, not a demo, expansion, edition upgrade, or bundle you did not intend to buy.
  3. Select the full-game purchase option and review the displayed price, account, and any edition details.
  4. Follow the checkout prompts to confirm payment. Nintendo’s digital-purchase guidance covers the Americas; payment choices shown to you depend on your country and account settings.
  5. After confirmation, allow the download to start. A released digital game normally begins downloading after purchase when the system is connected to the internet.

Before confirming, compare the edition name and listed storage requirement with what you intended to buy. A standard edition, deluxe edition, expansion, and bundle can appear as separate products even when their names are similar. The price and purchase button shown on the exact listing are the safest way to distinguish them.

The purchase belongs to the Nintendo Account used during checkout. Keep that account available on the console: ownership is not transferred simply because another profile uses the Switch.

Buy through Nintendo.com

Nintendo also documents purchases made through its website. For a released game bought on Nintendo.com to download to the console, the Switch must be on or in sleep mode, connected to the internet, and associated with the purchasing Nintendo Account. If the console is powered off or offline, the download waits until those conditions are met.

This remote-purchase route still requires the same basic prerequisites: a Switch system, eShop access, a Nintendo Account, internet service, and enough memory. If the console is shared, confirm that the Nintendo.com account and the account active on the intended Switch are the same before paying.

Use an eShop Card only if you need funds

Nintendo lists eShop Cards as an optional way to add money when the account balance does not cover a digital purchase. A card is not required for a free demo. Card availability and redemption rules vary by country, so buy and redeem a card intended for your eShop region. You can also use another payment method displayed during checkout if it is supported for your account.

Do not buy a card just to unlock a demo. Add funds only after you have checked the full game’s price and decided which Nintendo Account should own it. If your balance is insufficient, checkout will show the available way to cover the difference for your region.

Manage storage before the download

There is no single download-size requirement for Switch games. The amount of space depends on the individual title and edition. Check the product page’s listed required space before confirming the purchase, then verify free space under the console’s System Settings and Data Management screens. If space is low, delete or archive software you no longer use, or install a compatible microSD card according to Nintendo’s system requirements.

Be careful when clearing space. Saved data and software are managed separately, so read the data-management choice before deleting anything. A deleted game can generally be redownloaded later from the purchasing account, while deleting software does not automatically mean that saved progress has been removed. Keep the purchasing account available if you need to retrieve the game later.

Fix common demo and download problems

The game has no demo option

Search the title in eShop rather than relying only on a catalogue page, then open the exact product listing. If the listing still has no demo action, the game does not currently offer a standard demo to your region or the offer has ended. Nintendo’s catalogue does not establish worldwide availability, so a demo visible in the US store may not appear in another country.

The demo disappeared after I deleted it

Open eShop with the profile that originally downloaded it, search for the game, and check the product page for a redownload action. Nintendo’s digital-content redownload guidance explains that most demos can be downloaded again. If no redownload option is present, check whether the listing or regional offer has changed.

The full game still shows a price

Nintendo says a price can appear when eShop is being viewed with a Nintendo Account other than the one that bought the game. Sign out of eShop, open it with the purchasing account, and revisit the listing. Only that purchasing account can download the purchased game at no additional cost. See Nintendo’s Previously Purchased Digital Content Shows Download Cost support page for the account-specific explanation.

The purchase is complete but the game is not visible

First confirm which Nintendo Account completed checkout and that the console is connected to the internet. Then use Nintendo’s Digital Content is Missing guide to check the purchase and redownload status. Searching the title in eShop while signed in to the purchasing account can also reveal the download control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The download will not start or finish

  • Test the Switch’s internet connection and reconnect if necessary.
  • Check available console or microSD-card space against the size shown on the game’s listing.
  • Leave the console on or in sleep mode with an active internet connection so a website purchase can reach it.
  • Retry from the purchasing account if eShop displays a purchase price or does not show the download action.

Nintendo identifies internet access and sufficient memory as download requirements in its Digital Game Purchases Through Nintendo.com FAQ. If those conditions are met and the problem persists, use Nintendo Support’s account and digital-content troubleshooting pages rather than buying the game again.

A Game Trial ended while I was playing

A Game Trial is limited to the advertised window. When that period ends, access to the full trial version ends unless you purchase the game. Reopen the title’s eShop page to see whether the trial is still active, whether a standard demo exists, and what purchase option is currently offered.

The listing changed after you downloaded the demo

Offers are controlled by the current product page. A title can stop appearing in a catalogue, lose a demo option, or show a different purchase or trial status. If the demo remains installed, it may still open, but the listing is the place to verify what Nintendo currently supports in your region. Do not assume that an old screenshot or a previously available offer is still valid.

A reliable decision path

  1. Search the game in your regional Nintendo eShop.
  2. If the listing offers a standard demo, download that free version and try it.
  3. If it offers a Game Trial instead, verify the Nintendo Switch Online requirement and end date before starting.
  4. When you are ready to own the game, select the full-game purchase option while signed in to the account you intend to keep as owner.
  5. Confirm the listing’s required storage, complete checkout, and leave the console connected so the download can finish.
  6. If the game later appears to cost money again, return to the purchasing account before troubleshooting anything else.

This process keeps the free trial step separate from ownership: a demo lets you evaluate the title, while the completed purchase grants the digital game to the Nintendo Account that paid for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every Nintendo Switch game have a free demo?

No. A demo exists only when that title’s current Nintendo eShop listing offers one. Check Nintendo’s games-with-free-demos catalogue and then verify the individual product page for your region.

Is a Game Trial the same as a demo?

No. A standard demo is a publisher-selected sample. A Game Trial is the full game for a limited period and, in Nintendo’s US, Canada, and Mexico flow, requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Do I need to pay or add an eShop Card to download a demo?

No. A standard demo is free to download. An eShop Card is an optional way to add funds only when you decide to buy a paid game and your account balance does not cover the price.

Can I redownload a demo after deleting it?

Nintendo says most demos can be found again in eShop. Open the listing with the profile that downloaded it and select the available redownload action. Availability can change if the offer ends.

Why does a game I bought still show a price?

The eShop may be open with a different Nintendo Account. Reopen it with the account that completed the purchase; Nintendo ties the no-cost download to that purchasing account.

What does the full-game download require?

Nintendo’s Americas purchase guidance lists a Nintendo Switch system, Nintendo Account, Nintendo eShop access, internet connection, and enough available memory for the game’s listed size.

Will my demo save or progress transfer to the full game?

Do not assume it will. Transfer rules are title-specific; check the game’s eShop page or in-game instructions for an explicit statement.

Can I buy the full game from Nintendo.com instead of the console?

Yes. For a released game purchased on Nintendo.com, the associated Switch must be on or in sleep mode, connected to the internet, and linked to the purchasing Nintendo Account so the download can begin.

The Bottom Line

Search the title in your regional Nintendo eShop, download its demo only if the listing offers one, and distinguish that sample from any time-limited Game Trial. When you decide to buy, use the Nintendo Account that should own the game, check the listed storage, complete checkout, and keep the Switch online for the download.
