When Zigbee devices keep going offline in Home Assistant, treat “offline” as a symptom rather than a diagnosis. First establish whether one device, a nearby group, or the whole Zigbee network is affected. Then inspect ZHA’s topology map, logs, and device diagnostics before moving the coordinator, adding routers, changing channels, or replacing hardware.
This sequence follows the official Home Assistant Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA) documentation, accessed October 13, 2026. It separates radio interference, weak mesh coverage, coordinator and serial faults, and device or battery problems without assuming that any single fix will work for every installation.
Start by defining what “offline” means in your installation
A device shown as unavailable may have missed a check-in, lost its route through the mesh, lost power, exhausted its battery, or become unreachable because the coordinator is unhealthy. The same Home Assistant symptom can therefore come from different layers of the system. Do not begin by changing a channel or buying a new coordinator; collect observations first.
Record the scope before changing anything
- Write down every device that becomes unavailable, including its room, model, and whether it is battery-powered or mains-powered.
- Note whether the devices fail at the same time or one at a time. Record the approximate time and how long each remains unavailable.
- Check whether Home Assistant, the host computer, the Zigbee integration, or the coordinator has recently restarted.
- Look for a location pattern: devices near one room, one wall, the coordinator, a Wi-Fi access point, or a USB 3.x peripheral.
- For a single device, record whether other Zigbee devices in the same area continue to respond.
These observations frame the investigation; they are not a guaranteed decision tree. A single failed sensor can still be affected by a route or coordinator problem, and several simultaneous failures can result from a common power or serial issue.

| Observation | What it can suggest | What to inspect next |
|---|---|---|
| Only one battery device is unavailable | A device-specific, battery, placement, or route problem is possible. | That device’s diagnostics, battery condition, and nearby mesh links. |
| Several devices in one area fail | Coverage, interference, or a missing router may be involved. | ZHA map links, coordinator placement, and powered-router coverage. |
| Many devices fail together | The coordinator, serial connection, host, or radio environment deserves priority. | ZHA logs, coordinator firmware and model, and recent restarts. |
| Failures began after a network change | A changed Wi-Fi channel, USB arrangement, coordinator position, or Zigbee setting may be relevant. | Compare the timing with the change and inspect logs before reversing settings. |
Inspect the ZHA map, logs, and diagnostics
Open the topology map
In Home Assistant, go to Settings > Connectivity > Zigbee, then choose Show map. ZHA’s visualization can display reported multi-hop relationships and RSSI or LQI values. Those readings can help identify a device with a weak-looking route or an area with sparse connectivity, but they are not a definitive radio-quality meter.
Reporting depends on the Zigbee stack implemented by each device. Battery-powered end devices commonly sleep and may not appear with complete links, so a missing line is not proof that the device has no route. Interpret the map alongside actual availability, logs, and diagnostics rather than ranking devices solely by one RSSI or LQI number. The official behavior and limitations are described in the ZHA documentation.
Capture useful logs
Reproduce or wait for the failure while ZHA logging is enabled, then save the relevant entries with their timestamps. Look for coordinator restarts, transport errors, repeated delivery failures, or messages that begin when several devices disappear. A log line that names a particular device is more useful than a generic unavailable state in the dashboard.
Download the affected device’s diagnostics
When one device is the focus, download its Zigbee device diagnostics from Home Assistant and keep the device signature, model, manufacturer, network address, and timing of the failure together with the logs. For a support issue, Home Assistant asks for debug logs, the exact coordinator model and firmware, and, when a specific device is involved, its Zigbee device signature and diagnostics. Supplying those details avoids guessing from a dashboard label.

Check coordinator placement and 2.4 GHz interference
The coordinator is the radio that anchors the ZHA network, so its physical location can affect every route. Home Assistant identifies USB 3.x ports and unshielded USB 3.x devices or cables as potential interference sources for low-power 2.4 GHz radios. Power supplies, appliances, the host computer itself, and Wi-Fi access points can also put the radio in a noisy or obstructed location.
Use a controlled relocation test
- Shut down or pause changes to the Zigbee network so you can compare behavior before and after the move.
- Disconnect the coordinator from a USB 3.x port or from a crowded cluster of cables where practical.
- Reconnect it through a USB 2.0 port, or through a powered USB 2.0 hub if that suits the host and coordinator.
- Use an adequately long, shielded USB extension cable to place the coordinator away from the computer, USB 3.x peripherals, power supplies, appliances, and Wi-Fi access points.
- Keep the new position consistent while you observe the same devices and log patterns you recorded earlier.
These are documented practices, not guaranteed cures. A move that improves one room but worsens another indicates that placement and mesh geometry still need to be considered; it does not by itself prove a particular cable or port was the sole cause.
What a placement change can and cannot establish
- If several devices recover or become more stable after the coordinator is moved, interference or attenuation at the original location becomes more plausible.
- If nothing changes, continue with mesh, serial, channel, and device checks instead of repeatedly moving the same hardware.
- Do not assume a USB extension fixes a damaged coordinator, incompatible device, or failing serial link.
Assess Zigbee mesh coverage
Zigbee routers are generally mains-powered devices that repeat messages for other nodes. Battery-powered sensors usually act as sleeping end devices and depend on a coordinator or router that can hear them. A device at the edge of coverage may work during pairing and later become unavailable when its route changes or the radio environment changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRead the map as a coverage clue
Look for the affected device’s reported parent or neighboring routers, then compare that with the physical distance and obstructions between rooms. Sparse links around a remote sensor suggest a coverage question, but the map’s incomplete reporting for sleeping devices means you should confirm the pattern with availability and logs.

Add powered routers only when the evidence points to a weak mesh
If the affected area is far from the coordinator or lacks mains-powered repeaters, adding a compatible Zigbee router or smart plug can provide another path. Compatibility is not universal: a device that supplies mains power is not automatically a reliable router for every coordinator, firmware version, or endpoint. Check that the specific device is documented as compatible with your ZHA setup before relying on it.
Place a new router where it can hear both the existing mesh and the weak area, rather than hiding it behind large appliances or inside a metal enclosure. Allow the network time to use the new route, then check the same device diagnostics and map observations. Adding several routers at random makes it harder to tell whether coverage actually improved.
Check the coordinator, firmware, and serial connection
Verify the coordinator before replacing it
Home Assistant recommends supported coordinator hardware and current firmware as part of reliability troubleshooting. Its documentation identifies Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 as the recommended official adapter for a new ZHA network. ZBT-1 is discontinued and replaced by ZBT-2, but remains supported. Those statements do not make an upgrade the default remedy for an existing network: first establish that the current coordinator, its firmware, or its connection is implicated by the symptoms and logs.

| Hardware or action | When it is relevant | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Existing supported coordinator | Confirm its exact model, firmware, power, and stable local connection. | A supported device can still have placement, firmware, or serial problems. |
| Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 | Documented recommendation when creating a new ZHA network. | Not evidence that every existing network needs an upgrade. |
| Home Assistant Connect ZBT-1 | An installed adapter that is no longer the current model. | Discontinued and replaced by ZBT-2, but still supported according to the documentation. |
| Shielded USB extension | Repositioning a coordinator away from interference. | A placement aid, not a guaranteed repair for other faults. |
Recognize an EZSP serial failure
If a Silicon Labs EZSP coordinator produces NCP entered failed state. Requesting APP controller restart, Home Assistant describes this as dropped communication between ZHA and the coordinator’s serial interface. Check that the coordinator is connected locally and that the host is not losing power or repeatedly resetting the USB device.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not route the coordinator’s serial connection over Wi-Fi, a WAN link, or a VPN. A network tunnel can add latency and interruptions that are inappropriate for the local serial transport ZHA expects. If the message persists after a direct, stable connection and a firmware check, include the exact log entry, coordinator model, firmware, host details, and timing in a support report.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle Zigbee channel changes as a deliberate last step
ZHA uses Zigbee channels 11 through 26 in the 2.4 GHz band. Home Assistant’s best practice is to keep the ZHA default unless there is a specific reason to change it. For general planning it lists channels 15, 20, and 25 as recommendations, while noting that device support can vary.
Check Wi-Fi settings before moving Zigbee
If overlap with Wi-Fi is suspected, the ZHA guidance says to consider setting a static Wi-Fi channel first. A fixed Wi-Fi channel makes the radio environment predictable and lets you observe whether the Zigbee problem correlates with a particular overlap, without immediately forcing every Zigbee device to find the network again.
Understand the cost of a Zigbee channel change
A Zigbee channel change is consequential. Home Assistant notes that devices may take up to an hour to reconnect after the change. Plan a maintenance window, ensure critical automations have an alternative, and keep the original channel and configuration recorded so you can recover if devices do not return.

Change the channel only after logs, placement, and mesh checks give you a reason to suspect radio overlap. Confirm that the coordinator and affected devices support the target channel, then monitor reconnection rather than assuming that a recommended channel will solve every installation.
Check the affected device, battery, and firmware state
Separate a battery problem from a general mesh problem
For a battery-powered device, inspect its reported battery level and follow the manufacturer’s device-specific guidance. Home Assistant notes that low battery voltage can cause pairing problems for some battery-powered devices. That observation does not prove that battery level causes every already-paired device to go offline, so do not use a low percentage alone as a universal diagnosis.
Replace the battery with the correct type when its condition is genuinely suspect, and observe whether the device resumes normal check-ins. Use fresh batteries before an over-the-air firmware upgrade, as Home Assistant recommends, because an interrupted update can create a separate recovery problem.
Keep pairing advice separate from offline troubleshooting
A device that never joins the network has a pairing problem; a device that joined successfully and later becomes unavailable has an availability, route, power, or transport problem. Low voltage is specifically documented as a possible pairing issue for some devices, not as a blanket explanation for every later outage. Use the device’s diagnostics and timing to decide which case you are handling.
Choose the next action from the evidence
| Evidence collected | Most appropriate next action | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| One device fails while nearby devices remain stable; diagnostics show device-specific behavior. | Check that device’s battery, placement, manufacturer guidance, and signature. | That replacing the coordinator will repair a single device. |
| Several devices in a remote area have weak-looking or sparse routes. | Improve coordinator placement and consider a documented-compatible mains-powered router. | That any powered Zigbee product is universally compatible. |
| Failures affect many rooms at once and coincide with coordinator restarts or transport errors. | Verify local serial stability, coordinator power, model, and firmware; preserve logs. | That a channel change is the first or safest response. |
| Failures correlate with a crowded USB or radio location. | Move the coordinator with a shielded extension and compare behavior under the same workload. | That the extension itself guarantees a fix. |
| Logs and topology suggest Wi-Fi overlap, with no placement or serial fault found. | Set a static Wi-Fi channel first; consider a Zigbee channel change only with a reconnection plan. | That channels 15, 20, or 25 work identically with every device. |
Prepare a useful support report if the problem remains
Once you have a reproducible pattern, provide evidence instead of a description such as “Zigbee is flaky.” Include:
- The Home Assistant version and host platform.
- The exact coordinator model, firmware version, and how it is connected.
- The affected device model, manufacturer, Zigbee signature, power type, and room.
- The times of failures, whether multiple devices failed together, and any recent restart or configuration change.
- ZHA debug logs covering the event.
- The affected device’s downloaded diagnostics.
- A description of coordinator placement, USB port or extension, nearby USB 3.x equipment, Wi-Fi access points, and powered Zigbee routers.
- Any channel change, router addition, battery replacement, or firmware update already attempted.
This information lets a maintainer distinguish a device implementation issue from a mesh, radio, coordinator, or serial fault. It also prevents a support exchange from repeating changes that have already been tested.
Keep the troubleshooting order consistent
For “Why does my Zigbee sensor become unavailable?” the useful answer is not a universal replacement part or channel number. Establish the scope, inspect ZHA’s map and evidence, improve coordinator placement, evaluate powered-router coverage, verify coordinator and serial health, handle channels cautiously, and then examine the affected device and battery. That order limits disruptive changes and ties each remedy to an observed cause.
