Windows Server maps error 0x800f0982 to PSFX_E_MATCHING_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND: servicing “Can’t identify matching component for hydration.” The code points to a component-matching problem, but it does not prove that orphaned Microsoft Defender components caused it. Check the affected server’s logs before choosing a component-specific fix.
What 0x800f0982 means—and what it does not
Microsoft’s Windows Server update troubleshooting guide defines 0x800f0982 as PSFX_E_MATCHING_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND. In practical terms, Windows servicing could not identify a matching component needed for hydration during an update operation. The definition describes a servicing condition; it does not identify Defender as the cause or establish that every cumulative update failure has the same cause. Microsoft’s error-code and repair guidance and its support documentation on Windows Update errors do not confirm an orphaned-Defender diagnosis for a particular server.
Before treating “all cumulative updates” as a single failure pattern, verify which KBs failed, the server’s build, the deployment route, and the component named in servicing logs. A code alone is not enough to justify removing Defender packages or changing component-servicing settings.
Collect the evidence from the affected server
Record these details before attempting repairs, so the result can be tied to a specific update and servicing transaction:

- Windows Server 2025 edition and OS build.
- The latest successfully installed KB and the exact failing KB or KBs.
- Whether updates arrive through Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, WSUS, or another management system.
- When installation fails, whether a restart occurs, and any error shown before or after restart.
- The relevant Setup event log entries and the servicing log around the failed transaction.
The servicing log is %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Review entries around the failure time for the package or component identity involved. That identity, together with the failed KB and build, is the evidence needed to narrow the next step; the error string by itself does not name the missing component.
Run Microsoft’s general component-corruption repair
Microsoft’s general Windows Server guidance recommends running DISM first, then System File Checker, from an elevated Command Prompt. These commands are broad repair steps, not a guarantee that this particular update failure will be fixed:

- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand let it complete. It can take several minutes; servicing details are recorded in CBS.log. - Run
sfc /scannowafter DISM finishes. - Retry the affected update and record whether installation succeeds or produces the same error.
Microsoft’s instructions are in its Windows Server update-corruption guidance. If DISM fails, capture its result and inspect CBS.log for the corresponding failure rather than repeatedly retrying without checking the log.

Online DISM repair normally uses Windows Update to obtain required files. If the server cannot reach that source, Microsoft documents supplying files from a working Windows installation or from network, USB, or DVD media. The repair-source computer must run the same operating-system version as the affected system. Confirm that source files match the server’s version; do not assume an arbitrary ISO or build is interchangeable. Follow Microsoft’s repair-source guidance for the applicable DISM procedure.

Verify the failing KB and update route
Server 2025 update packaging and delivery instructions depend on the KB and can change over time. Confirm that the specific update applies to the installed build, check whether it has been superseded, and verify that the configured deployment channel is offering the intended package. Microsoft’s Server 2025 release notes for KB5060842 and KB5063878 document Catalog and WSUS availability and combined SSU/LCU packaging for those dated releases. Those examples do not establish which package is current or failing on a given server; use the Microsoft release page for the exact target KB.

If DISM and SFC do not restore servicing, or CBS.log identifies a missing package or component that the general repair does not resolve, preserve the relevant logs and pursue Microsoft’s supported recovery route for that component and update. Do not delete Defender packages, force package removal, or edit servicing registry keys based only on 0x800f0982; the documented error mapping does not validate those actions as a fix.
