Windows “Error 5: Access is denied” does not point to one universal fault. The right fix depends on what failed, which account or service tried to do it, and which resource denied access. First identify whether the message appeared during a command, software installation, service startup, SQL Server startup, or Active Directory replication; then follow the matching diagnostic path below.
Start by identifying the failed operation
Record the complete error text, the action that triggered it, and the name of the program or service involved. “System error 5 has occurred” and “Access is denied” can describe unrelated permission failures. A process running as an administrator can still be denied access to a particular file, event log, service, or network resource.
Next, identify the security identity actually performing the operation. It may be your interactive Windows account, the SYSTEM account, a service account, or a domain principal. Check access to the specific resource named in the failure rather than changing permissions across the system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Command or installer: Determine whether the process needs elevation, then check the exact file or folder operation and any security-product alert.
- Windows service: Note the service name and inspect the relevant event logs; service-start errors can have causes specific to that service.
- SQL Server service: Check the configured service account’s access to the SQL Server installation folder.
- Domain controller replication: Treat the issue as a Windows Server domain diagnosis, not a routine desktop permissions problem.
Check elevation and the identity performing the task
If the failed action normally requires administrator rights, verify that the application or command prompt was started with elevation. But elevation only changes the privileges of that process; it does not automatically grant access to every resource or override an explicit Deny rule, service configuration, or domain policy. If the process is already elevated, do not keep repeating the same step: check the account or service identity and the target resource’s effective permissions.

Fix the permissions on the specific resource
Inspect the permissions on the exact file, folder, log, or other resource involved. Look for missing required access and explicit Deny entries. Make only the smallest change supported by the diagnosis. Avoid taking ownership of broad directory trees or resetting permissions wholesale: those actions can break application and Windows security assumptions without addressing the actual cause.
SQL Server will not start
For the SQL Server startup scenario documented by Microsoft, the service account lacks the required permissions on the SQL Server installation folder. Identify the account configured for the SQL Server service, then review its effective access on that folder and check whether an explicit Deny entry is blocking it. Microsoft’s procedure is described in “Access is denied” error and SQL Server doesn’t start (updated January 17, 2025).

If Task Scheduler fails to start with Error 5
This is a specific Windows client scenario, not a general fix for every Error 5 message. Microsoft identifies the cause as missing write permission for the SYSTEM account on the System event log: “This error occurs because the NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM account doesn’t have write permissions to the System event log.” A customized event-log security descriptor can remove the expected access.
- Open Event Viewer and review the System and Task Scheduler logs for events around the failed service start.
- For this Task Scheduler startup failure, inspect the System log security descriptor at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesEventLogSystemCustomSD. - Use Microsoft’s documented procedure to verify that the descriptor grants the required access to SYSTEM. Follow its scenario-specific SDDL guidance; do not copy a descriptor or edit this registry value for an unrelated access-denied error.
- After a documented correction, retry the service start and check the logs again.
Registry and security-descriptor changes can affect system security. If you are unsure how to validate the value, use Microsoft’s Task Scheduler service startup troubleshooting procedure rather than guessing.

If Active Directory replication reports Error 5
On a domain controller, replication access denied is an administrator-level diagnosis. Microsoft lists multiple possible causes, including a broken secure channel or trust, password mismatch, a full security log combined with CrashOnAuditFail, excessive time skew, RPC restrictions, missing network logon rights, SMB-signing mismatch, and other Kerberos or network conditions. The error alone does not identify which one applies.
- Run the domain-controller diagnostics Microsoft recommends, including
DCDIAG /TEST:CheckSecurityErrorand NETDIAG. - Use the reported findings to investigate the relevant authentication, trust, audit-log, policy, time, or network condition with a domain administrator.
- Apply only the remedy for the confirmed cause. Do not use registry workarounds as a general replication fix; Microsoft warns that incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems and advises backing up the registry before making changes.
Follow Microsoft’s Active Directory replication Error 5 guidance for supported Windows Server versions.

If a download or installer is denied
When a download or installation fails even in an elevated PowerShell session, elevation may not be the issue. Check the exact destination and operation, confirm that the installer came from a trusted source, and review your security product’s detection or quarantine records. A Microsoft Q&A thread describes one user’s case in which an antivirus product flagged a Rust package tool; that report is an individual example, not evidence that antivirus software generally causes Error 5 or that protection should be disabled. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfirm the correction without widening access
Retry the original operation after the narrow, diagnosis-backed correction. Check the relevant event log or application output to confirm whether the failure changed. If access is still denied, return to the identity and resource: verify which account made the attempt and whether it has the specific required access. For managed servers or domains, involve the administrator responsible for that environment before changing service permissions, registry values, or security descriptors.
