If a Windows app will not install, open, or work properly on a Snapdragon X laptop, first identify what is failing: the app itself, a driver-dependent feature, Windows’ update state, or a connected device. Windows 11 on Arm can run many x86 and x64 apps through emulation, but emulation cannot make an incompatible hardware driver work. Start by recording the exact error and checking for app and Windows updates; then use the steps below to narrow down the cause.
Start by identifying what is failing
“This app or game can’t run on your device” is a useful clue, but it does not by itself prove that Arm architecture is the cause. Installation failures, launch failures, and problems with one feature inside an otherwise working app can have different causes. A printer utility may open while its driver-dependent functions fail; an app may be outdated; or the app may not support the Windows version on the laptop.
Before changing settings, write down the details that will help you distinguish those cases and explain the problem to a publisher or support team:

- The full error message, or a description of what happens when you try to install or launch it.
- Whether it ever worked on this laptop and, if so, when the problem began.
- Whether the issue started after an app update, a Windows update, or a device change.
- Whether the failure affects the entire app or only a feature that uses a printer, network adapter, graphics component, security tool, or other device.
- The laptop model and the Windows edition and version shown in Windows Settings.
Those details establish a baseline. If the same app opens but a connected device or one particular feature fails, investigate driver and peripheral support rather than treating the symptom as a simple app-installation problem.

How Windows 11 on Arm runs apps—and where compatibility stops
Windows apps can be built for different processor architectures. A native Arm64 version is built for Arm-based Windows PCs. An x86 or x64 version is built for another Windows architecture and may run on Windows 11 Arm through emulation. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism for improved performance in emulated apps and that Prism is available on Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon X series processors. Check the Windows version and the laptop’s current device information rather than assuming every Snapdragon X system has identical software or support.
Microsoft describes native Arm apps as the preferred performance path: “Apps rebuilt for Windows Arm-based PCs have the best performance.” That is a performance statement, not a guarantee that every Arm64 release will work with every device, Windows build, or feature. Conversely, the absence of a native Arm64 release does not automatically mean an app cannot run: an x86 or x64 version may work through emulation.

Microsoft’s compatibility distinction is explicit: “Drivers for hardware, games, and apps only work if they’re designed for a Windows 11 Arm-based PC.” This can matter for printer or PDF software, assistive technologies, virtualization software, some security software, game anti-cheat drivers, and peripherals. A program that installs or launches is not necessarily fully compatible if it depends on a driver that is missing or blocked.
Check app support and update the app
Find out whether the publisher offers a current version for Windows on Arm, preferably a native Arm64 build when one is available. Check the Microsoft Store listing for a Store app; for software installed from elsewhere, use the publisher’s official support page or update mechanism. Look for the exact app version and supported Windows configuration, not just a general statement that the product runs on Windows.

Then install any available app update and test the same action that failed. This is a useful first step because app support and releases change over time. If the publisher does not say whether the app supports Windows on Arm, ask directly whether the specific version works on Windows 11 Arm and whether every feature you rely on is supported. For a program that uses a driver, ask separately about the driver: app compatibility alone does not answer that question.
- Microsoft Store app: open Microsoft Store and check for app updates.
- App installed from a publisher: check the publisher’s site or update tool for a newer version and its Windows-on-Arm support information.
- App works but one function does not: identify whether that function uses a device, driver, or add-on and check its support independently.
A publisher’s support statement is especially useful when an installer gives a generic device error. It can confirm whether the app is supported on the exact platform or whether the installer, a component, or a driver is the limitation.
Install Windows updates before retesting
Windows updates can address operating-system problems, and Microsoft’s general older-app guidance also recommends updating device drivers through Windows Update when an app opens but behaves poorly. Keep Windows current before deciding that a problem is a permanent architecture limitation.

- Select Check for updates and follow the prompts for available updates.
- When Windows asks you to restart, save your work and restart the laptop.
- Reopen the app and repeat the action that failed. Note whether the result changed.
Also note the Windows version shown on the laptop. Prism’s improved emulation is associated with Windows 11 version 24H2, and Microsoft identifies Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon X series processors for Prism availability. Do not infer that a particular emulation feature is present solely from the processor name; check the Windows version and current device information. If Windows is up to date but the same failure remains, use the error and symptom pattern to choose the next branch instead of repeatedly reinstalling updates.

Try Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for an older app
If the app is older and has no newer release available, Windows 11’s Program Compatibility Troubleshooter is a reasonable attempt. Microsoft’s instructions describe it as help for older apps; it is not a guaranteed Arm fix and cannot supply a missing Arm64 driver or remove a hard architecture limitation.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Follow the prompts for the affected app and apply the suggested compatibility settings if offered.
- Launch the app and test the specific action that failed before troubleshooting.
Record what the troubleshooter changed and whether the symptom improved. If it does not help, return to the architecture and driver questions: an older app may still depend on a component that is incompatible with Windows on Arm. The troubleshooter can help with some older-app issues, but its result does not establish that every function is supported.
Separate app problems from driver and peripheral problems
When an app depends on a hardware or kernel driver, the driver is a separate compatibility requirement. The app may itself be native Arm64 or may run through emulation, while a required driver is unavailable for Windows 11 Arm. Ask the app publisher or hardware manufacturer for an Arm64 driver or explicit support for Windows on Arm. Do not assume that reinstalling the app will resolve a missing driver.
When the app opens but a device does not work
Check whether the device is supported by Windows’ built-in driver or whether the manufacturer supplies an Arm64 driver. For a printer, Microsoft says most printers are supported, including printers that support Mopria, but actual operation still depends on a built-in Windows driver or a suitable driver from the publisher. If basic printing works but a vendor utility or advanced feature does not, ask the manufacturer whether that utility and feature are supported on Windows on Arm.

When a printer installer will not run
Microsoft’s Surface-specific guidance says that if a manufacturer’s printer installer does not support ARM, Windows Settings is an alternative to try. This advice is specifically described for Surface ARM devices; it should not be read as a guarantee for every printer or as a universal fix for third-party Snapdragon X laptops. On a non-Surface laptop, check the laptop maker’s and printer maker’s instructions for the exact model and Windows version. If you try Windows’ installation flow, verify whether the printer can perform the functions you actually need rather than treating detection alone as proof that all vendor features work.
When a game, security tool, or specialist app fails
Ask whether the failing function installs or relies on a driver. Microsoft identifies drivers for games and apps as well as hardware in its Windows 11 Arm limitation guidance. This is relevant to cases such as game anti-cheat, some security products, assistive technologies, and virtualization software. A compatibility statement for the main app may not cover a separate driver or service, so ask the publisher about the specific component and supported Windows-on-Arm configuration.

Use Event Viewer only when the symptoms point to a driver problem—for example, a device or driver-dependent feature stops working and a blocked driver is plausible. It is a targeted diagnostic, not a routine first step for every app that fails to install or launch.

- Open Event Viewer.
- Go to Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > CodeIntegrity > Operational.
- Look for relevant events around the time of the failure. Record the event ID and the driver information shown.

Microsoft’s Driver Policy guidance describes a change in the April 2026 security update: expired cross-signed drivers stopped being trusted by default. If the relevant event or driver details point to that policy, use the information to identify the driver and seek a supported version from its vendor. Do not bypass driver signing or disable security protections to force an unsupported driver to load. A blocked driver is a compatibility and security issue to resolve with the publisher, not a reason to weaken Windows protections.

Choose the next step from the symptom
Once you have checked updates and gathered the error details, use the symptom to decide who or what to investigate next. These are diagnostic directions, not guarantees that a particular fix will work.

The key distinction is whether the app itself fails or whether a feature that depends on another component fails. A driver event is meaningful when it matches the device or function involved; its presence alone does not prove it caused an unrelated app error.
Escalate with details that support can use
If the supported update, compatibility, and driver checks do not resolve the issue, contact the app publisher for app compatibility or the hardware maker for device and driver support. Send enough information for them to identify the exact configuration rather than reporting only that “the app does not work.”
- App or device name, exact version or model, and where the software came from.
- Windows edition and version, laptop model, and the date or update after which the problem began.
- The exact error text, steps to reproduce it, and whether the app ever worked on this laptop.
- Which functions work and which fail, especially if only a device-backed feature is affected.
- Relevant Event Viewer details, including CodeIntegrity event ID and driver information, if you checked for a suspected block.
Use the app publisher for questions about whether its program and components support Windows on Arm. Use the hardware or peripheral manufacturer for its drivers and device-specific setup. Microsoft also points users to Feedback Hub for Windows feedback. Microsoft describes App Assure as a resource for developers working on Arm64 application compatibility; it should not be presented as a general consumer support channel, and eligibility should be confirmed with Microsoft.
What a successful diagnosis should establish
Before settling on a cause, make sure the evidence matches the failure. A native Arm64 release, an emulated x86 or x64 app, and a driver-dependent component are different compatibility paths. An app update may resolve an app problem; it does not establish driver support. A device appearing in Windows does not establish that all of its vendor software features work. An Event Viewer entry should be connected to the driver and symptom being investigated.
If the publisher confirms that the exact app version and feature are supported, and Windows and app updates do not change the result, the collected error, reproduction steps, and driver details give the right support team a specific issue to investigate. Compatibility can change as publishers release updates, so verify support for the app version and laptop configuration in question rather than relying on a generic claim about Windows or Snapdragon processors.
