When Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or mobile data misbehaves after an Android update, first identify which connection path fails. Restart the phone, test Wi-Fi and mobile data separately, and use another network or device to determine whether the fault is in the phone, the local network, the internet service, the accessory, or the carrier. Only then forget a network or reset network settings, because those actions remove saved connections and pairings.
Start by isolating the failed connection
The timing of a failure after an update does not, by itself, prove that the update caused it. Android phones, routers, Bluetooth accessories, SIMs, and carrier accounts can fail independently. Treat “after an update” as useful context, not as a diagnosis. The following sequence is low risk and works across most Android devices, although menu names vary by manufacturer, model, Android version, and carrier.
Run the two-minute isolation test
- Restart the phone. A restart reloads the radio services that handle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular connections.
- Test mobile data by itself. Turn Wi-Fi off, leave Mobile data on, and open a webpage. Note whether a cellular data indicator appears.
- Test Wi-Fi by itself. Turn mobile data off, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and open a webpage. This shows whether the phone can reach the internet through the wireless network.
- Write down the exact symptom. “Cannot see the network,” “connected but no internet,” “paired but no sound,” and “no signal” point to different next steps.
Google’s Android guidance recommends switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data after restarting. If one path works and the other does not, troubleshoot that path instead of changing every network setting at once.
Use another network and another device

These tests narrow the fault; they do not prove a particular cause. Keep notes about the network name, location, signal, Android version, and whether the problem is constant or intermittent. That information makes a later support call much more productive.

Wi-Fi not working after an Android update
Check the basic connection
- Open the phone’s Internet or Wi-Fi panel and confirm Wi-Fi is on.
- Confirm that the phone is connected to the intended network, not a similarly named guest or extender network.
- Move close to the router or access point. A weak signal can look like an update problem, especially in a new location.
- Toggle Wi-Fi off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
- Open a webpage or another network-dependent app. A Wi-Fi icon alone does not guarantee that the network has internet access.
Restart the home network safely
If every device on the network is slow or offline, restart the existing router or access point according to its manual. Google’s general Android steps describe unplugging the router, waiting, and reconnecting it. Allow it time to finish booting before testing the phone. Do not press a factory-reset pinhole unless the router manufacturer specifically instructs you to; that can erase the network configuration.
If other devices remain offline after the router restarts, contact the ISP or the person who administers the network. Google’s Android Help states: “If you still have connectivity issues after you complete these steps, contact your internet service provider or the host of the Wi-Fi network.”
Forget one network and reconnect
Use this when the phone fails on one saved network but works elsewhere, or when the password or security settings changed.

- Choose Forget or Forget network.
- Return to the available-network list, select the same network, and enter its current password and any required security details.
- Test a webpage before changing another setting.
Forgetting removes the saved profile. Make sure you know the password and any enterprise or captive-portal requirements first. If the network is provided by an employer, school, hotel, or public venue, its administrator may need to approve the device again.

Use an Internet-panel reset only when appropriate
Some Android versions provide a connection reset from the Internet panel. Labels and locations differ. Read the confirmation screen carefully: Google warns that resetting a connection during a phone or video call ends that call. Save work and finish calls before confirming.
Pixel-specific Wi-Fi checks
On Pixel phones, Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance includes forgetting and re-adding a saved network, checking another network, and resetting Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings. The combined reset deletes saved Wi-Fi connections, so you will need the passwords and must reconnect each network afterward. Pixel menu paths are not universal Android instructions; Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, and other manufacturers may combine these controls or use different labels. If the wording on your phone differs, use the manufacturer’s support instructions for that exact model.
Bluetooth not connecting after an update
Restart both sides of the connection
- Turn Bluetooth off on the phone, wait briefly, and turn it on again.
- Power the accessory, headphones, speaker, watch, or car system off and on.
- Keep the accessory close to the phone and make sure it has charge.
- Open Bluetooth settings and verify that the accessory is both paired and connected. A device can remain paired while disconnected.
For a car, stop safely before changing settings. Some cars support Bluetooth calls but not Bluetooth music, or do not support one of those profiles at all. Google’s Bluetooth guidance specifically notes that vehicle compatibility varies.

If pairing fails, remove the old record from the phone. Where applicable, also remove the phone from the car’s or accessory’s list of remembered devices. Then put the accessory into its discoverable or pairing mode and pair it again from the phone. Follow the accessory maker’s procedure for entering pairing mode; simply turning it on may not be enough.

Re-pairing can remove the device’s saved relationship with the phone and may require choosing it as the active audio source again. If several phones are nearby, temporarily disable Bluetooth on the others so the accessory does not connect to the wrong device.
Check the audio profiles
Open the saved Bluetooth device’s details and verify the relevant options. Media audio controls music and video; Phone audio controls calls. Bluetooth may show “connected” while one of these profiles is disabled. Also check the phone’s volume, the app’s output selector, and the car stereo’s selected source.
Pixel Bluetooth diagnostics
Google documents Bluetooth diagnostics on Pixel 6 and later. Do not assume that tool exists on every Android phone. If the phone uses a customized Android build and the standard restart, re-pairing, and profile checks do not help, consult the device manufacturer. Bluetooth accessories can also have firmware, compatibility, or multipoint-connection limits that an Android reset will not change.
Mobile data stopped working after an Android update
Confirm cellular data and signal
- Turn Wi-Fi off so the phone cannot silently use a saved wireless network.
- Open SIM, Mobile network, or Cellular settings and confirm Mobile data is on.
- Toggle Mobile data off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
- Look for a cellular data indicator such as LTE, 4G, 5G, or another carrier-specific symbol.
- Try outdoors or in another location if the signal is absent or very weak.
A missing signal in one building may be coverage or a local outage, not a damaged phone. If signal problems persist or recur in places where coverage is normally available, ask the carrier about an outage, account status, SIM activation, and plan changes.

Refresh the cellular registration
Turn airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, and turn it off. This forces a basic reconnection to the carrier network. Afterward, restart the phone and retest with Wi-Fi still off. Airplane mode is a reconnection step, not a substitute for resolving an inactive account or unsupported SIM.
Pixel mobile-network checks
On Pixel, Google recommends confirming that the intended SIM is in use, reviewing the preferred network type, and checking signal information. Available network types and labels vary by country and carrier; select only options supported by your plan and local network. Google also documents a mobile-network settings reset for Pixel. Read the warning before accepting it and record any carrier-specific settings you may need to enter again.
Do not apply Pixel paths word-for-word to another Android brand. On some phones, SIM management is under Network & internet; on others it appears under Connections, Mobile network, or a carrier-specific menu.

When the carrier must investigate
Contact the carrier when there is no service across locations, the account or plan recently changed, the SIM is not recognized, calls and texts also fail, or other customers in the same area report an outage. Ask the carrier to verify coverage, outages, account provisioning, data limits, and whether the SIM or eSIM is active. Replacing a SIM or phone is not a default fix; let the carrier establish that the component is defective.

Reset settings only after the simple checks
What a network reset can remove

Reset labels, scope, and warnings differ across Android builds. Read the confirmation text rather than assuming that a similarly named option has the same effect. A factory reset is not a first-line connection repair: Google’s general device guidance says it removes data and recommends trying other solutions first.
Check for a later update without expecting a cure
If the manufacturer recommends a later system or carrier update, install it using the normal, supported process and adequate battery power. Do not assume that a later update will fix connectivity, and do not promise that rolling back is possible. The official guidance reviewed here does not establish a universal rollback procedure. Avoid unofficial firmware changes unless the device maker explicitly supports them and you understand the data and warranty risks.
Choose the right escalation path

Manufacturer support is the appropriate destination for custom Android builds or device-specific menu problems. Carrier support is appropriate for coverage, outage, SIM, account, and plan questions. The ISP or network host owns the investigation when other devices fail on the same Wi-Fi.
A compact decision checklist
- Restart the phone before changing settings.
- Test Wi-Fi with mobile data off, then test mobile data with Wi-Fi off.
- For Wi-Fi, compare another network and another device on the affected network.
- For Bluetooth, restart both devices, confirm pairing, and check Media audio and Phone audio.
- For mobile data, confirm the SIM is active, data is enabled, signal is present, and airplane mode has been toggled for 10 seconds.
- Forget one network or pairing only when the problem is limited to that saved connection.
- Before a broad reset, record passwords, pairings, SIM details, and carrier settings.
- Do not factory-reset the phone or install unofficial firmware as an initial response.
- Escalate based on the failure pattern: ISP/network host, carrier, accessory maker, or phone manufacturer.
This process separates a phone fault from a network, accessory, internet-service, or carrier fault while preserving the settings that still work. It also avoids attributing every post-update symptom to the update itself.
