Classify the failure before changing a key provider or rebooting a host. vSphere encryption errors usually belong to one of five layers: KMS network or TLS connectivity, KMS authentication and permissions, Native Key Provider (NKP) version compatibility, TPM policy or device readiness, or a missing provider identity/key. The layer determines whether a connectivity check is appropriate—or whether changing configuration could make encrypted workloads unrecoverable.

Start by recording the exact error, vCenter and ESXi releases, provider type and health, affected host or cluster, and whether the event followed an upgrade, reboot, provider change, or KMS outage. Then use the matching branch below. The procedures and version statements are tied to the Broadcom Knowledge Base articles linked in each section; verify their current revisions and your supported release matrix before production changes.

1. Preserve evidence before changing encryption settings

Do not delete, recreate, rename, or replace a provider as an initial diagnostic step. A provider with the same display name is not the same logical provider, and its key identifiers and derived key material are different.

Capture this context

  • The complete message, including punctuation and codes such as QLC_ERR_GENERAL_ERROR, QLC_ERR_COMMUNICATE, kmsClusterNotFound, or KeyMissingOnKMS.
  • vCenter Server and ESXi versions and update levels for every affected host.
  • Whether the provider is an external KMS or an NKP, and whether vCenter reports it as Connected, Healthy, Error, or another state.
  • The exact host, cluster, VM, or vSAN cluster affected.
  • What changed immediately before the failure: a new provider, certificate or credential change, upgrade, reboot, host replacement, provider deletion, or KMS outage.
  • Relevant vpxd and ESXi log entries, collected using the instructions in the Broadcom article for your error. Preserve timestamps so KMS, vCenter, and host events can be correlated.

This record separates a timed-out KMS connection from a version mismatch or lost key identity. It also gives support a way to distinguish a single bad KMS entry from a cluster-wide policy problem.

2. External KMS transport, TLS, and authentication failures

When the UI waits about two minutes or reports a TCP failure

A stalled Configure > Key Providers workflow can be a provider health check waiting for an unreachable KMS, not a browser or vSphere Client defect. Broadcom documents QLC_ERR_COMMUNICATE Failed to establish TCP connection to server, the message Cannot accept empty cert, and an approximately 120-second wait in its KMS connectivity guidance.

Use Broadcom KB 313228 for the release-specific checks. At a minimum, verify that the configured KMS address and port are reachable from the vCenter or host path used by the deployment, that the KMS service is running, and that the provider health details and logs show the same endpoint. Check the certificate presented by the KMS and the certificate expected by vCenter; an empty or unacceptable certificate can prevent the connection even when basic network reachability works.

  1. Copy the endpoint, port, and certificate-related text from the provider configuration and error.
  2. Confirm routing, firewall rules, DNS resolution, and service availability for that endpoint from the relevant management network.
  3. Inspect provider health and vpxd/ESXi logs at the failure time for TLS negotiation, certificate, or TCP messages.
  4. Correct the KMS-side or vCenter-side connection data, then run the provider health check again.
  5. Only after the provider is Connected or Healthy, retry the encryption operation.

Do not infer that every delayed UI operation is a KMS outage; use the log entry and endpoint test to prove the failure layer.

“CreateKey failed on key provider” with permission denied

The combination of CreateKey failed on key provider, QLC_ERR_GENERAL_ERROR, and a KMS response such as Permission Denied, Explanation:DENIED indicates that the KMS rejected a key-creation request. In the vCenter 8.0 case documented in Broadcom KB 430116, the KMS entry had been configured with username/password authentication instead of the expected certificate-based method.

That article’s remedy is specific to the documented configuration: create a new KMS entry, leave username and password unset (including the optional password field), and use certificate-based KMS authentication. Wait for the new entry to report Connected or Healthy, then remove the old entries that were configured with credentials. Confirm the KMS audit/log response before deleting anything.

  1. Record the existing KMS name, cluster identity, endpoint, and health state.
  2. Add a fresh KMS entry using the certificate-based authentication expected by the deployment; do not populate the username/password fields for the KB 430116 scenario.
  3. Verify that vCenter reports the new entry as Connected or Healthy and that the KMS accepts a test key operation.
  4. After validation and a recovery record, remove the obsolete credential-based entry.

This is not a universal explanation for every CreateKey failure. A denied request can also result from KMS-side policy, an incorrect certificate, a wrong account or tenant, or an endpoint mismatch. If the KMS response or logs do not show an authentication configuration problem, keep the original entry intact and investigate those alternatives.

3. Native Key Provider version compatibility

“The host does not support Native Key Provider”

For the message Key provider is not compatible with the host. Reason: “The host does not support Native Key Provider”, Broadcom KB 385226 identifies a version mismatch: vCenter Server 7.0 Update 2 or later paired with an ESXi host at 7.0 Update 1 or earlier. The cited guidance says both sides must be at vSphere 7.0 Update 2 or later for NKP use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Component Version condition in KB 385226 Action
vCenter Server 7.0 Update 2 or later Confirm the installed build and supported upgrade path.
ESXi host 7.0 Update 1 or earlier in the incompatible case Update the host to 7.0 Update 2 or later, subject to current support guidance.
NKP support matrix beyond these releases Not stated in the cited article Check the current VMware/Broadcom compatibility documentation for newer releases before scheduling an upgrade.

Inventory every host in the cluster rather than checking only the host that displayed the error. A mixed-update cluster can continue to fail when an older host receives encrypted workloads or is placed into encryption mode.

  1. Read the exact vCenter and ESXi build numbers from the inventory.
  2. Compare each host with the NKP requirement in KB 385226 and the current product support matrix.
  3. Plan coordinated updates, maintenance mode, and rollback protection.
  4. Re-test NKP compatibility on the updated host before enabling encryption.

4. TPM policy and TPM 2.0 readiness

Distinguish a policy rejection from a hardware-state problem

Errors such as TPM device is required, No TPM2 device present, or Key provider is not compatible with host. Reason: “TPM device is required” do not have one cause. Check both the NKP policy and the physical TPM state.

When Use key provider only with TPM protected ESXi hosts is enabled, a host without a TPM 2.0 device is intentionally incompatible. Broadcom KB 423191 covers this policy case. If the organization does not require TPM-only protection, its cited remedy is to recreate the NKP with that constraint unchecked. Recreating a provider changes its identity, so treat this as a planned provider operation and preserve the original backup.

A host can also have a TPM that is disabled, inaccessible, or not ready. Broadcom KB 421239 describes the same class of error and directs administrators to enable or ready the TPM on ESXi. Verify the device state in the host hardware/security configuration and resolve firmware, BIOS, or readiness issues according to the server and VMware support procedures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Constraint enabled, no TPM2: the incompatibility is expected; either provide a ready TPM2 device or deliberately change the provider policy.
  • TPM2 installed but not ready: correct the disabled, inaccessible, or uninitialized state before changing NKP policy.
  • Versions also fail compatibility: resolve the vCenter/ESXi release mismatch first; a TPM cannot make an unsupported NKP version combination compatible.

Mixed-TPM clusters and recurring encryption-mode events

In a cluster containing both TPM-capable and non-TPM hosts, a TPM-only provider can generate recurring requires encryption mode enabled events on hosts without TPM. Broadcom KB 438405 describes a backup-and-restore procedure that relaxes the constraint, sets the restored provider as default, and then validates host and VM behavior.

Use that procedure only after confirming the security requirement. Unchecking a TPM-only constraint permits encryption on hosts that do not have TPM-protected key handling; it is a security-policy change, not merely a way to silence an event.

  1. Document the current provider identity, backup location, default-provider setting, and affected hosts.
  2. Create or verify a usable provider backup before changing the constraint.
  3. Restore the provider using the documented workflow, with the TPM-only constraint changed only if policy permits.
  4. Set the restored provider as the default provider.
  5. Validate Host Encryption Mode and representative VM encryption on both TPM and non-TPM hosts.

5. “Backup of native key provider failed”

An NKP configuration attempt may end with Backup of native key provider failed, while the provider health state shows ERROR. Broadcom KB 417441 confirms these symptoms, but the available article summary does not establish enough of the resolution to reproduce a safe, complete fix here.

Do not guess at a cause, delete the provider, or proceed as if a backup exists. Preserve the error and health details, verify that the backup destination and permissions meet the requirements in the current KB, and follow that article’s release-specific procedure. If the provider protects production VMs, escalate with the exact vCenter/ESXi versions and logs before retrying destructive changes.

6. Missing provider identity or key material after deletion, upgrade, or reboot

Why recreating the old provider name does not recover keys

If host encryption cannot be enabled after an upgrade or reboot because the original NKP was deleted, restore the original provider from its backup. Broadcom KB 311922 warns that a newly created provider—even one given the same display name—does not contain the original key derivation key or key ID.

This is a high-risk recovery path. The cited workaround involves rekeying the host and re-encrypting VMs, and it warns not to reboot during the workaround. Without the original provider or an unencrypted backup, encrypted VMs can become unusable. Confirm that the backup is the original NKP backup, restore it through the documented workflow, and keep a recovery plan for every affected host and VM.

  1. Stop routine configuration changes and record which provider ID the hosts and VMs reference.
  2. Locate and validate the original NKP backup; do not substitute a provider created later with the same name.
  3. Restore the original provider according to the current KB 311922 procedure.
  4. Rekey hosts and re-encrypt VMs only as directed by that procedure, maintaining its no-reboot warning.
  5. Verify host encryption mode and VM access before returning workloads to normal operations.

kmsClusterNotFound or KeyMissingOnKMS after reboot

Broadcom KB 451205 describes hosts that remain bound to a deleted provider ID after a reboot. The article’s recovery is to identify a valid provider, make it the default, rebind the affected host through the configureCryptoKey management operation, and verify that Host Encryption Mode returns to Safe.

  1. Use the error and inventory data to identify the affected host and the provider ID it still references.
  2. Confirm the replacement provider is valid and contains the required key material; do not select a similarly named but unrelated provider.
  3. Set that provider as the vCenter default using the supported interface.
  4. Invoke configureCryptoKey for the specific host as documented in KB 451205.
  5. Check the host’s encryption mode and key-provider health, then test the protected workload.

Management operations can affect encryption state. Verify the host and provider identifiers twice and use the exact syntax and privileges in the current Broadcom procedure.

7. Special rule for encrypted vSAN

Encrypted vSAN changes the urgency of a KMS outage. Broadcom’s vSAN Encryption KMS troubleshooting article states: If the vSAN cluster is encrypted and KMS servers fail or experience communication issues, Encryption keys stay in memory until a reboot DO NOT REBOOT any configured ESXI hosts to maintain data access.

In this specific outage context, do not reboot configured ESXi hosts merely to clear an alert or retry KMS communication. Work on restoring KMS reachability, TLS, and authentication while the keys remain in memory, and follow the article’s operational guidance for the affected vSAN release.

If the original KMS configuration was removed from vCenter, add it back with exactly the same kmipClusterId. The cluster identity is what lets hosts retrieve keys associated with that KMS cluster; a newly added entry with a different identity is not an equivalent replacement.

8. Choose the branch by evidence, scope, and recovery risk

Evidence Likely layer Typical scope First safe action Risk if handled incorrectly
Failed to establish TCP connection, empty certificate, long UI wait Network, TLS, or certificate One KMS entry or management path Check endpoint reachability, certificate, provider health, and logs. Repeated retries can obscure the original timeout; replacing a provider can lose identity context.
CreateKey plus KMS permission denied Authentication or KMS authorization One KMS configuration Inspect KMS response; for the KB 430116 case, create a certificate-authenticated entry and verify it. Deleting the old entry before validation can remove a usable configuration.
Host does not support NKP vCenter/ESXi version compatibility One host or mixed-version cluster Inventory builds and compare them with the supported NKP matrix. Changing TPM settings will not fix an unsupported release combination.
TPM device required or no TPM2 present TPM policy or device readiness Host or mixed-hardware cluster Check the TPM-only constraint and hardware readiness separately. Relaxing the constraint may weaken the intended security policy.
Provider deleted, kmsClusterNotFound, or missing key Provider identity or key material Host, VM, or encrypted cluster Restore the original provider or follow the documented rebind procedure. Lost original keys can make encrypted VMs unrecoverable; rebooting encrypted vSAN hosts can interrupt data access.

9. When to stop troubleshooting and escalate

Escalate before destructive changes when the original provider backup cannot be located or validated, a KMS denies key operations without a clear policy explanation, a production vSAN cluster is encrypted during a KMS outage, or the proposed fix requires rekeying hosts or VMs. Supply the exact error, timestamps, provider and host identifiers, vCenter/ESXi builds, provider health, recent changes, and relevant logs. Ask for confirmation of the supported procedure for your exact release rather than applying a command from a different version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The central rule is simple: repair transport and authentication in place; verify versions and TPM state before changing policy; and treat provider replacement or key recovery as a data-protection operation, not a routine configuration retry.
