Most Shopify checkout extension problems are not ordinary browser-CSS bugs. The checkout runs your extension in an isolated, constrained surface: you cannot select the host checkout DOM, override Shopify component CSS, or inject arbitrary HTML. Start by identifying whether the failure is unsupported styling, an incorrect target or placement, a checkout-layout difference, a runtime mount error, or slow rendering. Then test the matching condition in the Shopify CLI, checkout editor, extension runtime, and browser performance tools.
What the symptom usually means
Classify the symptom before changing code. A component that appears with the wrong spacing is a different problem from an extension that never mounts, and both differ from an extension that appears but does not accept input.
| Observed symptom | Most useful first hypothesis | First place to check |
|---|---|---|
| Element appears, but typography, spacing, color, or shape differs from expectation | Unsupported attempt to style Shopify’s host components or a layout built with the wrong supported primitive | Component properties, stack/grid/section usage, and merchant branding settings |
| Nothing appears in a published checkout | Target is wrong, the block was not added in the editor, placement is unsupported, or the extension failed during mount | Extension target and API metadata, then checkout and accounts editor placement |
| It appears in one checkout layout but not another | Three-page versus one-page behavior, a collapsed rollup, Shop Pay context, or a placement-specific difference | Reproduce the same buyer-data state and placement in each layout |
| It appears late | Network wait, bundle download/parse, or render work before visible content | Performance recording and Network panel on a real checkout |
| It is visible but clicks or input feel delayed | Work after rendering or input-handling cost, not necessarily a visibility problem | Separate extension_visible from extension_buyer_usable timing |
Understand the checkout extension boundary
The host DOM and CSS are off-limits
Shopify’s checkout UI extension documentation states: “You can’t override the CSS for UI components.” An extension does not get access to the real checkout DOM and cannot render arbitrary HTML. A selector aimed at an internal checkout class, a global stylesheet, or an injected element will therefore not provide a supported fix. If a design depends on those techniques, the problem is the implementation approach rather than an intermittent styling defect.
Build the interface from Shopify’s supported components and their documented properties. Use the available typography, spacing, alignment, and appearance options; compose content with sections and other provided primitives; and let merchant branding settings supply the checkout’s approved visual context. Treat the extension surface as an API-rendered UI, not as a page on which your code owns the markup.

Choose a supported layout primitive
Use Stack when the arrangement is primarily one-dimensional: a row or column whose direction, spacing, and responsive behavior can be described along one axis. Use Grid when the interface genuinely needs two-dimensional rows and columns. A section component can provide the supported grouping and visual hierarchy around either approach. This substitution is usually more reliable than trying to recreate a custom flexbox or CSS-grid stylesheet that the checkout cannot accept.
| Need | Supported direction |
|---|---|
| Linear row or column with responsive spacing | Stack and its documented properties |
| Two-dimensional cards, fields, or aligned columns | Grid and its documented properties |
| Grouped content with checkout-consistent structure | Section and other Shopify-provided UI components |
Do not infer that a component is broken because its appearance differs from a custom design mock-up. First ask whether the mock-up relies on host selectors, arbitrary HTML, or CSS values that the extension API does not expose.
Confirm the extension generation, API version, and target
Check the configured values
Open the extension’s configuration and record its API version and target. Then inspect the extension metadata available at runtime to confirm that the running target and API version match what you intended. This catches a surprisingly common class of errors: editing one extension or target while previewing another, or using an example from a different component generation.
Shopify identifies API version 2025-07 as the final version that supports React-based UI components. Later API versions use Polaris web components. The checkout UI extension references displayed 2026-07 as the latest API version at the time of the documentation review. Do not mix React-component examples with Polaris web-component examples until you have checked the versioned reference for your extension.
The versioned 2025-07 component documentation also warns that, after October 1, 2026, extensions that have not upgraded may be blocked from updating. Because version policy can change, check Shopify’s current upgrade documentation before planning a production migration or treating that warning as the complete present-day rule.

Use runtime metadata as evidence
At startup, log or otherwise expose the extension API’s metadata for the current run: target, API version, editor context, and rendered state. The values tell you whether the code is executing in the surface you think it is. A correct component tree in the wrong target can look like a rendering failure; an expected target with a rejected initialization promise points to a runtime failure instead.
Keep diagnostics inside the extension runtime. Checkout UI extensions run in an isolated worker-like context and do not have the regular page window object or checkout DOM. Page-level scripts and DOM selectors are not dependable diagnostic tools for this surface.
Verify targets and merchant placement
Static targets
A static target has a fixed, documented location. Confirm that the target exists for the API version you are using and that your extension configuration names it exactly. If the target is valid but the extension still does not appear, continue with runtime error capture and checkout-context checks rather than attempting CSS changes.
Block targets
A block target is not automatically visible merely because the app is installed. Shopify requires the merchant to add and place the app block in the checkout and accounts editor. A block can be correctly built, successfully downloaded, and still be absent because no merchant placement exists.
Use this sequence for a missing block:
- Run the Shopify CLI development workflow with
shopify app dev. - Open the CLI-generated checkout preview and verify that the extension is available in the editor.
- In the checkout and accounts editor, add the app block to the intended supported surface and save the configuration.
- Preview each supported placement instead of assuming that one placement represents every target.
- For an individual block placement during development, append
?placement-reference={name}to the CLI-generated checkout URL, replacing{name}with the placement reference you need to test.
Shopify documents placement references including WALLETS1, INFORMATION1 through INFORMATION3, DELIVERY1 through DELIVERY2, and PAYMENT1 through PAYMENT4. Test only references supported by the target and checkout surface you have configured.

Reproduce the exact checkout layout
Three-page checkout
In the three-page layout, section-specific targets appear on their corresponding page. An extension attached to an information target will not be visible while you are looking only at the delivery or payment page. Record the page on which the target is expected, then navigate to that page before concluding that the extension failed to render.
One-page checkout
In one-page checkout, the sections are mounted together. Section-specific extensions that are separated across steps in a three-page checkout can therefore appear together in one page. A layout that seems to have “moved” may be following the one-page mounting rules rather than ignoring your target.
Prefilled buyer data and rollups
Prefilled buyer information can collapse sections into rollups. Static extensions continue to mount inside the rollup. Block extensions belonging to collapsed sections move toward the bottom. Compare the same buyer-data state when investigating a position change; an empty checkout and a checkout with address or contact information already supplied are not equivalent rendering contexts.
Shop Pay
Shop Pay uses the one-page layout. Merchants control whether extensions are included through the editor, so test Shop Pay separately from a standard checkout and verify its editor configuration. Do not use a successful standard-checkout placement as proof that the Shop Pay surface includes the extension.
Build a context comparison record
For each reproduction, record the extension version, API version, target, placement, checkout layout, buyer-data state, and actual location. Holding those variables constant lets you distinguish a target-placement issue from a documented layout behavior. This is especially important when a merchant reports “it works in preview” without specifying which layout or buyer state was used.

Capture mount and runtime failures
Listen for rejected promises and exceptions
Register listeners for unhandledrejection and error in the supported extension runtime. They can reveal a rejected data request, a JavaScript exception during initialization, or a resource-load failure that prevents the component tree from reaching a rendered state. Include the error message, stack when available, target, and API version in the diagnostic record.
A download in the Network panel is not proof of a successful mount. Shopify notes that an extension can download and still never render, consuming resources without producing visible UI. If metadata shows the expected target but the rendered state is never reached, investigate the initialization path and captured errors before changing placement.
Use rendered state to defer expensive work
Extensions may be pre-rendered before the buyer reaches the corresponding checkout step. Defer expensive requests or computation until the extension’s rendered state is true when that work is not needed earlier. This reduces work for targets the buyer never visits and prevents a pre-render phase from being mistaken for an on-screen performance problem.
Separate visibility from usability
Use the extension API’s rendered-state information and performance timings to answer two separate questions: when did the extension become visible, and when could the buyer use it reliably? A visible extension with delayed input handling has a different cause from content that has not arrived. Keep those findings separate in bug reports and fixes.
Measure slow or late rendering on a real checkout
Use a repeatable test setup
Shopify recommends measuring performance on a real checkout rather than relying on the checkout editor. Use an incognito window, disable the browser cache, throttle the network (Slow 4G is Shopify’s example), and inspect extension requests in the Network panel. Record a Performance-panel trace, repeat the test with mobile emulation, and if possible repeat it on a phone because CPU cost can change which task is dominant.

- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
- Open a fresh incognito checkout and disable cache in DevTools.
- Apply a constrained network profile such as Slow 4G.
- Record the Performance panel from navigation through visible content and a usable interaction.
- Inspect extension requests for waits, failed responses, download size, and timing.
- Repeat with mobile emulation or a physical phone.
- Compare
extension_visibleandextension_buyer_usablerather than reporting one blended delay.
Interpret the timing pattern
- Visible content is late: inspect waits for external data, bundle download and parse time, and render work. A lightweight placeholder shown before a required fetch can improve perceived rendering, provided it does not misrepresent the final state.
- Visible but not interactive: inspect work scheduled after render, event handlers, and input responsiveness. The extension may already have a good visibility time while buyer usability remains poor.
- Never appears: return to target and editor placement checks, then inspect mount errors. A slow request is not the only explanation for a blank surface.
- Only one placement fails: reproduce that placement with its placement reference and compare the target’s supported content and runtime path with a placement that works.
Shopify does not publish a universal bundle-size limit for checkout UI extensions in this performance guidance. A large bundle is therefore not automatically the slowest part, and a small bundle is not automatically fast. Use the merchant’s checkout trace to identify whether the dominant cost is network waiting, download and parse, rendering, or post-render main-thread work.

Replace host selectors with component properties
Remove selectors that target checkout internals and any attempt to inject a stylesheet into the host page. Express the required hierarchy with Shopify components and documented properties. If a color, type scale, or spacing value is unavailable, redesign around the supported appearance rather than treating the missing value as a browser bug.
Replace arbitrary HTML with supported components
Custom HTML can appear attractive in a local mock-up but is not a supported checkout extension output. Map each semantic need—text, heading, button, field, divider, feedback, or grouping—to the corresponding Shopify component and verify that its API version supports the properties you use.

A complete troubleshooting runbook
- Classify the symptom. Decide whether the issue is appearance, absence, wrong location, late visibility, or late usability.
- Record version and target. Confirm configuration and runtime metadata, including API version, target, editor context, and rendered state.
- Check the component generation. Ensure React examples are used only with versions that support them; use Polaris web components for later versions.
- Remove unsupported assumptions. Eliminate host-DOM selectors, CSS overrides, and arbitrary HTML from the proposed fix.
- Verify placement. For blocks, add and place the app in the checkout and accounts editor; for development, run
shopify app devand use the placement-reference query parameter. - Test documented contexts. Compare three-page, one-page, rollup, and Shop Pay behavior with the same target and buyer-data state.
- Capture runtime failures. Listen for
unhandledrejectionanderror; compare the expected target with the rendered state. - Measure only after mounting is understood. Use a real checkout, incognito mode, disabled cache, throttled network, mobile conditions, and separate visibility and usability timings.
- Apply the narrow fix. Change placement for a placement problem, component composition for a styling problem, initialization for a runtime problem, and data or post-render work for a performance problem.
- Retest every affected context. A fix proven in one-page checkout or one placement is not automatically proven in three-page checkout, a rollup, or Shop Pay.
What to send an extension developer
A useful merchant report contains evidence rather than a screenshot alone. Include:
- Checkout layout: one-page or three-page, and whether the test was in Shop Pay.
- Whether buyer information was prefilled and whether the relevant section was collapsed into a rollup.
- Extension version, configured API version, target, and block placement reference.
- The editor configuration showing that a block was added and placed.
- The URL generated by the development workflow, including any
placement-referencequery parameter used. - Expected location versus actual location, with the checkout page or section named.
- Console or extension-runtime output from
unhandledrejectionanderrorlisteners. - A Performance-panel trace and Network-panel timings captured on a real checkout, preferably under throttled and mobile conditions.
This information lets the developer decide whether to change configuration, editor placement, component composition, runtime handling, or performance work instead of guessing from visual differences.
Key distinctions to keep when fixing the issue
| Comparison | Meaning | Typical action |
|---|---|---|
| Static target versus block target | Fixed platform location versus merchant-controlled editor placement | Check target existence for static; check editor placement and supported references for blocks |
| Three-page versus one-page checkout | Section-specific targets appear by step in three-page; sections mount together in one-page | Retest the same target in both layouts |
| Static extension versus block in a rollup | Static content remains inside the rollup; a block from a collapsed section moves toward the bottom | Compare buyer-data state and section collapse before changing layout code |
| Visible versus buyer-usable | Content has appeared versus interaction is responsive | Measure extension_visible and extension_buyer_usable separately |
| Stack versus Grid | One-dimensional responsive arrangement versus two-dimensional layout | Select the primitive that matches the geometry |
Bottom line for maintainers
Treat Shopify checkout extensions as isolated, API-driven surfaces. First prove the configured target, API generation, editor placement, and checkout context. Then use runtime metadata and error listeners to establish whether the extension mounted. Only after those checks should you tune perceived speed with real-checkout performance traces. Styling fixes belong in supported components such as Stack, Grid, and Section—not in host-page selectors or injected CSS.
