There is no single SteamVR reset that fixes every problem. Re-run Room Setup when your virtual floor or play-area direction is wrong; restart the runtime and verify its files for general faults; use safe mode to isolate startup conflicts; and troubleshoot tracking, display, and performance separately. Start with the low-risk checks below, then follow the branch that matches your symptom.

Before resetting, identify what is actually wrong

Note your headset model, the exact SteamVR status or error message, when the problem began, and any recent Windows, graphics-driver, SteamVR, or headset-firmware changes. Also note whether the fault is repeatable and whether it affects startup, the display, tracking, room position, or performance. Steam’s support pages offer symptom-specific guidance rather than one diagnostic wizard for every headset.

Steam’s broad troubleshooting guidance starts with verifying SteamVR tool files, checking graphics drivers, restarting SteamVR, rerunning Room Setup, and restarting Windows. These checks address different causes; they are not interchangeable forms of a universal reset. Steam’s client wording and menu paths can change, so check the labels in your installed version. Run the general SteamVR checks first

  1. Verify SteamVR files: In Steam, open Library, right-click SteamVR, choose Properties, open Local Files, then select Verify Integrity of Tool Files. Let the check finish and follow any prompt to reacquire files.
  2. Check graphics drivers: Confirm that the driver for your graphics card is current using the card maker’s guidance. A driver change may require a Windows restart.
  3. Restart SteamVR: Close the runtime and start it again. If the client is unresponsive, close it through Windows before relaunching.
  4. Rerun Room Setup: Use this when the virtual room, floor, or play-area direction is inaccurate. It recalibrates the space rather than repairing runtime files.
  5. Restart Windows: This can clear a stuck runtime or device connection after the earlier checks.

My virtual position is different than my actual position

If your tracked position drifts or the headset appears to float, inspect the device status in the SteamVR status window and check the physical tracking setup before repeatedly recalibrating. On HTC Vive systems, Steam’s tracking guidance recommends checking headset, link-box, and PC cable connections; USB connections; and whether devices can see powered and synced base stations. A gray display or drifting position can accompany tracking trouble, but frame-time spikes may instead point to CPU performance. Steam Support: SteamVR tracking

For HTC Vive base-station setups

Steam’s Vive-specific troubleshooting page says to mount base stations above head height, at least 6.5 feet high, angle them down 30–45 degrees, and keep them no more than 5 m (16 ft) apart. These are legacy Vive instructions, not universal placement rules for other headsets or tracking systems. Reflective surfaces can disrupt tracking in some setups; cover nearby reflective surfaces if tracking loss persists. Steam Support: SteamVR Troubleshooting (Vive)

If USB detection remains unreliable

Try the PC’s other available USB ports and recheck every connection first. Steam’s older Vive tracking guide says its testing found the Inateck 2-Port USB 3.0 PCIe card, model KTU3FR-2O2I, reliable for certain HTC Vive USB issues. That is a narrow, model-specific suggestion; it does not establish compatibility with other headsets, motherboards, or current product revisions.

The orientation of my play area is not correct

Rerun Room Setup from the SteamVR menu when the virtual front or play-area orientation is wrong. Steam says advanced Room Setup options can also change orientation and other features. This adjusts room calibration; it will not resolve a black display or repair a startup crash. Steam Support: SteamVR Troubleshooting

Floor position is too high or low

Steam says the floor is measured during Room Setup, and moving base stations can change the measured floor position. Rerun Room Setup first. Steam’s floor-specific instructions also describe quick calibration under Settings > Developer > Room and Tracking; menu names may differ in a later client version. Steam Support: Floor position is too high or low

SteamVR fails to start, quits unexpectedly, or is unresponsive

Complete the general checks before isolating add-ons. If the fault continues, Steam documents a safe-mode launch that prevents some third-party drivers and components from loading.

  1. Open the Windows Run dialog.
  2. Enter vrmonitor://safemode/enable and press Enter.
  3. Test whether SteamVR starts and remains responsive.
  4. If safe mode resolves the issue, disable or update recently added third-party VR components one at a time, then test again.

Steam names Natural Locomotion and LIV as examples of utility applications that can conflict in some cases; this does not mean either application always causes a problem. If SteamVR still fails in safe mode after the baseline checks, Steam directs users to contact support. Steam Support: SteamVR Troubleshooting

Headset display is black (no video input)

A black display is a video-path problem to investigate separately from room calibration. Steam Support recommends checking Direct Mode in SteamVR Settings > Developer and confirming that the monitor and headset link box are connected to the same GPU and to working video outputs. Direct Mode and the available ports depend on the PC and headset model. Steam Support: Headset display is black (no video input)

  • Check that the headset, link box (if used), and PC video connections are fully seated.
  • Try another port of the same connection type, or an appropriate alternative cable or adapter for the headset.
  • Confirm that the graphics driver is current.
  • Verify that the monitor and headset video connections are routed to the same GPU, not split between a motherboard output and a separate graphics card.

Low framerate, freezing, or stutter

Use SteamVR’s Frame Timing graph while running a demanding VR title. Steam’s performance guidance says spikes may indicate a CPU performance problem; a spike alone does not prove that tracking is at fault. Check for conflicting software, graphics-driver problems, and signs of CPU or PC thermal-performance issues. Steam Support: Low framerate / freezing

If SteamVR files fail verification

Steam’s low-framerate guidance says to verify the SteamVR tool cache. If verification fails, its instructions describe deleting the local tool content and reinstalling SteamVR. Use the Steam Support steps for the installed client rather than deleting unrelated Steam folders.

If USB devices need to be re-detected

Steam’s issue-specific instructions also describe removing SteamVR USB devices from Developer settings with the link box unplugged, then reconnecting it and launching SteamVR. Follow the steps for your headset and client version; this is a targeted connection-recovery action, not a general performance tune-up.

Room-scale figures apply to HTC Vive guidance

Steam’s FAQ gives a minimum room-scale area of 2 m by 1.5 m (6.5 ft by 5 ft) and a maximum base-station distance of 5 m (16 ft) in its HTC Vive context. Do not apply those figures automatically to other headsets or tracking systems. Steam Support: SteamVR FAQ
