When Steam Input cannot find a controller, first identify which layer is failing: the controller may not be connected to the computer or Steam Deck, the operating system may see it while Steam does not, or Steam may detect it while a particular game ignores it. Update Steam and the host device, restart everything, then test a supported wired connection before changing game settings. This sequence prevents you from trying game fixes for a pairing or USB problem.
The steps below separate the 2026 Steam Controller, Steam Deck, and legacy 2015 Steam Controller paths. Menus can change with Steam client updates, so use the labels shown on your device where they differ.
First identify what “not detected” means
Steam Input failures are easier to solve when you classify the symptom instead of treating every failure as a game setting. Check the earliest layer that fails:

Keep the model, connection method, host device, and the exact layer that fails. Those details determine which Steam Support instructions apply.

1. Update and restart before changing settings
Valve puts updates and a restart at the beginning of its troubleshooting flow for both the current Steam Controller and Steam Deck. Install pending Steam client and operating-system updates. Apply any firmware update offered for the controller, receiver, or puck. Then restart Steam and power-cycle the controller and host device.
- Close running games and exit Steam completely rather than only closing the window.
- Restart the Windows PC, Mac, or Steam Deck.
- Turn the controller off, wait several seconds, and turn it on again. If it uses a receiver or puck, reconnect that accessory after Steam has started.
- Open Steam and test detection before launching a game.
On Steam Deck, temporarily exit or disable third-party applications installed in Desktop Mode while retesting an input issue. This is a diagnostic step: it removes software that could intercept or remap input, but it is not a guarantee that the application caused the failure.

A direct wired test is the quickest way to separate a wireless or pairing fault from a Steam configuration fault. Use a USB cable that carries data; a charging-only cable can power a controller without creating a usable input connection. Connect directly to the host rather than through an unpowered hub or dock for this test.
2026 Steam Controller: USB-C, Bluetooth, and Puck modes
The 2026 Steam Controller supports three documented connection methods: Puck wireless, Bluetooth, and USB-C wired mode. With the controller switched off, plug it directly into the computer with USB-C. In this mode the controller should power on in USB-C mode and its LED should be green. This LED behavior is specific to this model; do not use it as a universal diagnostic for other controllers.
If USB-C works while Puck wireless or Bluetooth does not, the controller itself and Steam’s basic input path are probably functioning. Concentrate on pairing, receiver visibility, placement, and radio interference. If USB-C also fails, try another known data cable and another USB port before assuming a hardware defect.

Steam Deck Bluetooth
- On the Deck, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Turn on Bluetooth and enable Show all devices if the controller is missing from the list.
- Check whether Steam offers a controller firmware update and install it before pairing again.
- If the controller is listed but will not connect, choose the device, forget it, and pair it again from the beginning.
Valve notes that many Xbox controllers may need firmware updates to work as expected with Steam Deck. A successful Bluetooth pairing confirms radio communication, but it does not yet prove that Steam Input or a game is receiving the correct input style.

Legacy 2015 Steam Controller
The 2015 Steam Controller follows Valve’s legacy support flow and may use its dedicated wireless receiver or another supported connection method. Follow the receiver’s pairing instructions for that model, then test the controller in Steam’s detection view described below. Do not apply the 2026 controller’s green-LED USB-C rule to the 2015 model.
3. Check whether the host operating system recognizes it
Before troubleshooting Steam, verify that the host can see the controller at all. Look in the operating system’s hardware or connected-device list while the controller is plugged in or paired. The entry may show a model name, a generic gamepad, or a receiver rather than the marketing name.
- If no new device appears, test a different data cable, USB port, receiver position, or Bluetooth pairing. Keep the controller connected directly during this check.
- If the operating system sees a receiver but not controller input, re-pair the controller and receiver according to that model’s instructions.
- If the operating system sees the controller and buttons respond in its input panel, move on to Steam’s own test rather than reinstalling unrelated drivers.
Record whether the operating system recognizes the device with USB, Bluetooth, and a proprietary receiver separately. A controller can work in one mode and remain invisible in another, so “it works” is incomplete unless the connection method is stated.
4. Confirm detection inside Steam
Steam Deck input test
On Steam Deck, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs. Press buttons, move each stick, and operate triggers or trackpads if present. A changing value in the test confirms that Steam is receiving input from the Deck’s current controller connection.
If the controller is absent from the test, return to Bluetooth or USB checks. If it appears but individual controls do not respond, note exactly which controls fail; that pattern is more useful than repeatedly pairing the device.

Legacy 2015 Steam Controller detection list
For the 2015 Steam Controller support flow, enter Big Picture Mode and open Settings > Controller > Controller settings. Look under Detected Controllers. The list shows whether Steam has discovered the controller or its receiver.
If the controller is listed but the game receives no input, the problem has moved from device discovery to configuration or overlay behavior. If it never appears, stay with connection, USB, and receiver troubleshooting.
2026 Steam Controller details
Open the controller details view in Steam and check the signal-strength indicator for the Puck connection. A weak or changing indicator points toward placement or interference rather than a game profile. Move the puck into a clear position and retest before editing layouts.

Steam’s labels and navigation can change between client releases. Use the closest current controller settings or input-test page if a menu name differs, but preserve the same question: does Steam receive live input?
5. When Steam detects it but one game does not
A successful Steam input test means the controller is discovered. Do not keep treating this as a Bluetooth or USB failure when only one title is affected.
Inspect that game’s Steam controller configuration
- Open the game’s page in your Steam Library.
- Open its controller configuration or controller properties and inspect the selected Steam Input behavior.
- Choose a layout appropriate to the game’s supported input style, then save or apply it.
- Launch the game after the layout is active and test a menu, not only gameplay.
Some games accept only certain input styles or switch behavior when they detect a keyboard, mouse, or another gamepad. If the game ignores a layout, try the game’s documented controller style rather than forcing an unrelated profile.

Check the Steam Overlay where legacy guidance requires it
Valve’s legacy 2015 Steam Controller instructions describe the Steam Overlay as vital to Steam Controller functionality and direct users to enable it when unavailable. Treat that advice as scoped to the legacy Steam Controller support path, not as a universal requirement for every third-party controller. If the overlay does not open in the affected game, enable it in Steam’s game properties, restart Steam, and test again.

Do not change global controller settings after every game failure. First compare a working title with the failing title: if the same controller works elsewhere, the useful evidence is the failing game’s profile, overlay state, or input compatibility.
6. Isolate USB ports and receiver interference
Test USB ports systematically
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, especially other high-bandwidth accessories.
- Move the controller cable or wireless receiver to another port on the computer or dock.
- Restart Steam after changing ports and repeat the Steam input test.
- Reconnect devices one at a time if the controller becomes intermittent again.
Valve documents USB scheduling and contention problems that can appear as intermittent disconnections, unreliable connections, or behavior changes after another USB device is connected. A port change is therefore a diagnostic, not merely a convenience. If one port consistently works, keep the receiver or wired controller there while you investigate the conflicting accessory.
2026 Steam Controller Puck
Use the signal-strength indicator in Steam’s controller details. Keep the puck in clear line of sight of the controller. Move likely interference sources away, including Wi-Fi access points and high-speed USB devices. Avoid hiding the puck behind a metal case, monitor, or dense cable bundle while testing.
Docked Steam Deck over Bluetooth
When the Deck is docked, Valve recommends line of sight between the Deck and controller, distance from 2.4 GHz devices, and separation between the Deck and high-bandwidth USB 3 accessories. Temporarily remove or relocate those accessories, then repeat the Bluetooth pairing and Steam input test. Restore devices one at a time to identify whether a particular accessory changes reliability.

7. Device-specific troubleshooting playbooks
2026 Steam Controller
- Install Steam, operating-system, controller, and receiver updates; restart the host and controller.
- Test USB-C directly with a known data cable. Confirm the model-specific green LED behavior.
- If wired works, test Bluetooth and then Puck wireless separately rather than changing both at once.
- Check the Puck signal indicator, line of sight, USB port, and nearby Wi-Fi or high-speed USB devices.
- When Steam sees live input but a title does not, open that title’s controller configuration and check overlay compatibility.
Steam Deck
- Install SteamOS, controller firmware, and Bluetooth updates, then restart the Deck.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth, enable Show all devices, and pair again if necessary.
- Forget a failed pairing and create a fresh pairing; update many Xbox controllers before judging compatibility.
- Run Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs.
- If docked, remove USB 3 accessories and nearby 2.4 GHz interference while retesting.
- Temporarily exit Desktop Mode applications that could intercept input.
Legacy 2015 Steam Controller
- Restart Steam, the host, controller, and receiver.
- Enter Big Picture Mode and open Settings > Controller > Controller settings.
- Check Detected Controllers and note whether the controller or receiver appears.
- If detected but ineffective in one game, verify that game’s Steam controller configuration and Steam Overlay.
- If absent, test another USB port and remove competing USB devices before contacting support.

8. Use the failure pattern to choose the next test

9. When to contact Steam Support
Escalate after updates, a restart, a direct wired test where supported, a fresh pairing, Steam’s input test, and an alternate USB port have all failed. Include precise details so support can route the issue correctly:
- Controller model: 2026 Steam Controller, legacy 2015 Steam Controller, Steam Deck controls, or another model.
- Host: Windows PC, macOS, Steam Deck, or a docked Deck.
- Connection method: USB-C, Bluetooth, Puck wireless, or another receiver.
- Whether the operating system recognizes the controller.
- Whether Steam lists it or shows input in its test page.
- Whether the failure affects every game or only one title.
- What changed when you tested another cable, USB port, receiver position, or pairing.
For current Steam Controller service concerns, Valve directs users to Steam Support through its feature and troubleshooting guide. Avoid opening the controller or buying replacement parts until support or clear evidence identifies a hardware failure.
10. The shortest reliable decision path
Use this order when you need a quick, repeatable diagnosis:
- Update Steam, the host, controller firmware, and receiver firmware when offered.
- Restart Steam, the host, and the controller.
- Connect directly by USB with a suitable data cable if the model supports wired mode.
- Confirm the operating system recognizes the controller.
- Run Steam’s controller test or inspect its detected-controller list.
- If Steam sees input, troubleshoot the individual game’s configuration and overlay.
- If detection is intermittent, change USB ports, remove competing devices, and reduce wireless obstructions.
- Escalate with the model, host, connection method, and layer that fails.
This sequence keeps low-cost, reversible checks first and prevents a game-specific configuration problem from being mistaken for a missing controller.
