If Starfield began crashing after an update, treat the update as a possible trigger—not proof that every installed mod is incompatible. Protect a known-good save, record which Creations changed, then isolate them before deleting content or reinstalling the game. Bethesda Support says that “Creations can cause in-game issues, in some cases,” and its Starfield guidance recommends disabling or removing Creations, repairing PC game files, and using different recovery steps on Xbox and PlayStation.
The safest order is reversible first: document the failure, disable one suspected Creation, test the same action, check the load order, and only then move to file repair, reinstalling, clearing reserved space, or deleting catalog data. A corrupted save cannot be repaired, so keep your backup and avoid repeatedly loading the only copy while troubleshooting.
What to do first: preserve a working path
Before changing your load order, create a recovery point. If the game still opens, make a manual save in a stable location and keep an earlier unmodded or known-good save available. Do not overwrite that file while testing. Bethesda’s save guidance warns that a corrupted save cannot be repaired; a backup is therefore more valuable than a fast, destructive fix.
Write down the failure
Record the platform, the Starfield version shown by the game or launcher, the Creations you installed or updated most recently, and the exact point of failure:

- crash while loading a particular save;
- crash when entering a settlement, interior, or other area;
- crash after playing for a period of time;
- the Creations menu failing to open or becoming unresponsive; or
- the game opening but refusing to save a changed load order.
This record prevents you from changing several variables at once and losing the clue that identifies the offending Creation. If the problem started immediately after a game update, note that timing, but describe it as a hypothesis. The official Starfield material does not establish that a particular update made a named Creation incompatible.
Decide whether the problem is a Creation, the game files, or a save
Use the symptom to choose the smallest test. A startup crash points toward a load-order or initialization problem. A crash only in one save may involve that save’s stored references. A menu that hangs is a separate interface or catalog problem. A crash in an otherwise stable, unmodded session makes file, driver, overlay, or hardware checks more relevant.

Isolate the Creation that causes the crash
If Starfield opens far enough to reach the Creations or Load Order menu, start with the least destructive action: disable the suspected Creation. Choose the item that was installed, updated, or moved immediately before the failure. If disabling it is not enough, disable the next most likely item and test again.

- Disable one suspected Creation, leaving the rest of the list unchanged.
- Restart Starfield if the menu or the game requires it.
- Repeat the exact action that caused the crash: launch, load the same save, enter the same area, or open the menu.
- Record whether the result changed before testing another Creation.
Testing one change at a time is practical troubleshooting advice rather than a universal Bethesda procedure, but it preserves a useful cause-and-effect signal. If disabling one item restores stability, re-enable it only after testing the rest of the list. A conflict can involve more than one Creation, so a successful first test identifies a suspect, not a guaranteed sole cause.
Disable versus delete
Disabling keeps the Creation available in your installed or library state and is the preferred first test. If the game cannot remain stable with it disabled, delete it from the Library or Creations interface only after confirming that you can restore it later. Do not remove a Creation from a save casually: content-dependent saves may show missing objects or behave differently when that content is absent.
Bethesda’s Starfield guidance recommends disabling or removing Creations when crashes are frequent. It does not provide a universal conflict-resolution sequence for every mod list, nor does removing one item prove that the game update caused the incompatibility.

Fix load-order and duplicate-file problems
When the order cannot be saved, inspect the list for duplicate Creation filenames. Two entries with the same filename can prevent a valid order from being written. Also check that each installed Creation is current according to its listing. Bethesda’s documented file-type order is:
- ESM files first;
- ESL files after ESM files; and
- ESP files after ESL files.
Use that rule as a structural check, not as a compatibility guarantee. It does not tell you which of two plugins should win a record conflict, whether a patch is required, or whether a Creation is safe to remove from an existing save. If a creator supplies a specific ordering instruction, follow that instruction after resolving duplicate names and confirming that the files are current.
When the list contains a recently updated Creation
Compare the Creation’s installed version with the version shown in its listing or update notes. Record the old and new version numbers if they are visible. If rolling back is not offered by the platform, leave the item disabled while you test the rest of the list. Do not infer incompatibility solely from the update date; the official Starfield support pages do not name a particular patch and Creation combination as incompatible.
PC recovery and file repair
For PC crashes, Bethesda’s Starfield crash guidance starts with the game’s baseline environment rather than a mod-specific fix. Confirm that the computer meets the game’s minimum requirements, install Starfield on an SSD, and check GPU drivers and performance conditions. Temporarily test without overlays, since overlay software can change how a game initializes or renders.
Recommended PC sequence
- Disable or remove all Creations that you can safely remove, beginning with the most recent changes.
- Close Starfield and the launcher.
- Use the launcher’s file-repair or file-verification function.
- Launch with Creations disabled and test a known-good save or a new game.
- If the crash continues and mods have been added, follow Bethesda’s more extensive sequence: remove the added mods, reinstall Starfield, and repair the files again.
- After the unmodded game is stable, add Creations back in small groups or one at a time, testing after each change.
Reinstalling is a whole-game intervention, so use it after reversible Creation tests and file repair unless the game cannot launch at all. Keep your save backups outside the game’s installation directory so an uninstall does not remove your only recovery copy.

If an unmodded installation runs normally, the failure is associated with the removed Creations, their load order, or an interaction between them. It does not identify the exact file until you add items back and reproduce the issue. If the clean installation still crashes, continue with requirements, SSD, driver, overlay, and platform troubleshooting instead of repeatedly changing the load order.

Xbox: remove Creations carefully
On Xbox, Bethesda recommends removing Creations and, when necessary, clearing reserved space. Clearing reserved space deletes downloaded Creations. It is therefore broader and less reversible than disabling one item in the Creations menu.
- Open the Creations or Load Order interface and disable or remove recent additions if it remains usable.
- Restart the game and test the affected save or action.
- If the crash persists, use the Xbox storage settings to clear Starfield’s reserved space as described by Bethesda Support.
- Expect downloaded Creations to be removed, then redownload only the items you can verify.
Do not apply PC file paths or PC catalog-file instructions to Xbox. Before clearing reserved space, make sure your saves are synchronized and that you know which Creations you will need to download again.
PlayStation: use the console-specific menu recovery
PlayStation recovery differs from both PC and Xbox. If the Creations menu cannot be recovered through the normal interface, Bethesda’s cited guidance gives reinstalling the game as the recovery step. Do not use PC instructions for ContentCatalog.txt and do not substitute Xbox’s reserved-space procedure.

Before reinstalling, preserve your saves through the console’s normal cloud or local backup option, close the game, and document your Creation list. After reinstalling, launch without adding Creations first. Verify that the base game can load a safe save, then restore content in a controlled sequence.
When the Creations menu itself hangs
A frozen Creations menu needs a different approach from an ordinary in-game crash. Bethesda advises waiting several minutes in case the problem is connection-related, then trying to disable recent Creations. If the menu remains unusable, follow the instructions for your platform.
PC catalog recovery
Bethesda’s PC instructions direct you to locate ContentCatalog.txt. Copy the file somewhere safe before deleting it if you want to preserve a record of the catalog. Then delete the file as instructed and relaunch Starfield so the catalog can be rebuilt. The copy step matters: deleting the file without retaining it removes that local record.

Console recovery
Xbox and PlayStation do not use the PC file procedure. Xbox recovery can involve removing downloaded Creations by clearing reserved space. PlayStation guidance uses a reinstall if the normal menu cannot be recovered. Check the consequence for your platform before confirming a destructive step.

If only one save crashes
First determine whether another save opens. If another save works, restart Starfield, power cycle the platform where applicable, and try the affected save with recent Creations removed or disabled. Bethesda’s save-troubleshooting guidance also lists reinstalling and launching offline among recovery attempts.
Keep the original save untouched while testing. If every other save works but one file repeatedly fails, treat that file as potentially corrupted rather than assuming a particular Creation or update is responsible. Bethesda states that a corrupted save cannot be repaired. A successful launch of a different save does not restore the damaged one.
How to discuss an update-related incompatibility accurately
Game updates can plausibly expose a mod conflict: an update may alter files or behavior that a Creation relies on, and a creator may later publish a compatibility update. However, the explicit Bethesda warning about creators needing to update mods after a game update comes from a Skyrim support article, not a Starfield-specific compatibility list.
For Starfield, identify the Creation name and installed version before claiming that its author needs to update it. If no current source names that Creation, version, and Starfield update together, use precise language such as “the timing suggests an interaction worth isolating.” Do not present the timing alone as proof of causation.

After Starfield is stable
- Keep an unmodded or known-good save separate from experimental saves.
- Record Creation names, versions, and load-order changes before installing updates.
- Change one Creation or one small group at a time, then reproduce the same test action.
- Do not clear reserved space or delete catalog data until you understand what downloaded content or records will be removed.
- When reporting a problem, include the platform, Starfield version, Creation versions, load order, crash location, and whether the base game works without Creations.
This information lets a creator or platform support team distinguish a missing file, duplicate filename, save-specific failure, and genuine content conflict without guessing.
