Start by checking the Starlink app for alerts and outage history, then determine whether the problem affects one device or every device. A single-device problem usually points to Wi‑Fi, a VPN, or that device’s Ethernet link. A whole-network problem calls for checks of the dish’s sky view, cables, router, added networking equipment, weather, congestion, and plan conditions. Run these comparisons before buying an accessory: a cable, mount, or replacement part only helps when the corresponding fault is confirmed.
Use this diagnosis-first sequence
Slow service and brief disconnections can have different causes, so changing several things at once makes the fault harder to identify. Work through the checks in order and record what changes. Note the time of each test, whether the weather is clear, which devices were tested, and whether the symptom is slow loading, complete loss of service, or repeated short drops.
- Open the Starlink app and review current alerts and outage history.
- Test two or more devices to establish whether the issue is isolated or universal.
- For one affected device, compare its normal location with a test beside the router, and compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet when possible.
- For all affected devices, reboot as directed by the app or the applicable hardware guide, then check speed-test results, obstructions, cables, and any third-party network gear.
- Compare symptoms during clear and poor weather and during busy and quiet usage periods.
- If the pattern remains after isolation, submit an app support ticket with measurements and photographs.
Check for a Starlink alert or outage first
In the Starlink app, review alerts and outage history before moving equipment. Follow instructions attached to an active alert. An outage or service event can make every device appear faulty, and local changes will not correct it.
For recurring interruptions, write down when they occur and whether they line up with weather or a particular time of day. Starlink’s intermittent-connection guidance specifically recommends looking for those patterns and documenting the Wi‑Fi setup. A single speed test is not enough to identify a service-side problem; repeated tests and the app’s history show whether the symptom is persistent or periodic.

Separate a one-device problem from an all-device problem
Connect at least one other phone, computer, or streaming device. If only one device is slow or disconnecting, begin with its wireless band, distance, VPN, and wired connection. If every device shows the same behavior, continue with the Starlink router, dish view, cables, environmental conditions, and added network equipment.
| Comparison | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| One device affected; others work normally | A local Wi‑Fi, VPN, Ethernet, or device-specific issue | Test beside the router, check the band and VPN, and inspect the device’s cable or adapter |
| All devices affected | A Starlink service, dish-view, router, cable, congestion, weather, or plan issue | Review alerts, reboot, run the Advanced Speed Test, inspect the dish and cables, and remove third-party gear temporarily |
| Only devices on added networking equipment affected | A router, mesh node, switch, or its configuration may be involved | Bypass the added equipment and retest with Starlink equipment alone |
A Gen 3 router setup guide describes three model-specific light states: red means the router is not connected to the internet, solid white means it is connected, and no light means the router has no power. Use those meanings only when your hardware matches that Gen 3 guide; other Starlink models can use different indicators.
When only one device is slow
Test beside the router
Move the affected device close to the Starlink router and repeat the same activity or speed test. A major improvement near the router points to local wireless range or interference rather than the satellite link. Return the device to its usual location after the comparison so you know whether distance is the deciding factor.
Compare 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi
Starlink describes 2.4 GHz as the longer-range band and 5 GHz as the faster band near the router. Use 5 GHz for the close-range test. If your network currently presents one combined name, use the Starlink app’s Wi‑Fi settings to split the bands when that option is available, then reboot the router as instructed. Test each band from the same location rather than changing distance and band at the same time.
Temporarily disable a VPN
A VPN can change the route and reduce measured speed or make a service appear unreliable. Turn it off for a comparison test if practical, then repeat the test. If the affected device must keep its VPN enabled, compare it with another device on the same Wi‑Fi that has no VPN. A difference between those tests identifies the VPN path as a variable, not proof that the Starlink connection itself is failing.

Check whether the device is actually wired
If the device uses Ethernet, inspect the category printed on the cable. Starlink recommends Cat5e or higher; a cable below Cat5e may limit speed. Check the cable at both ends and test with a known-good Cat5e-or-higher cable only after confirming that the problem is on a wired connection. Replacing a cable cannot correct congestion, an obstructed dish, weak Wi‑Fi, or an outage.
When every device is slow or dropping
Reboot in the supported way
Use the reboot instruction shown in the Starlink app or in the hardware guide for your setup. After the equipment reconnects, test more than one device again. Record whether the reboot changed the symptom and how long any improvement lasted; a temporary change is useful evidence even when it is not a permanent fix.

Use the Advanced Speed Test to locate the bottleneck
Where available, open the Starlink app’s Advanced Speed Test. It compares three paths:
| Test path | What it measures | How to interpret a weak result |
|---|---|---|
| Router → Internet | The Starlink router’s connection out to the internet | Points toward the Starlink link, service conditions, or congestion when local device links are healthy |
| Device → Router | The local Wi‑Fi or Ethernet link between a device and the router | Points toward distance, Wi‑Fi band, VPN-related testing differences, a cable, or local equipment |
| Device → Internet | The end-to-end result from that device through the router and Starlink service | Use it with the other two paths; it cannot by itself identify which segment is slow |
Run the comparisons from the same device and location, then repeat at another time if the issue comes and goes. These are diagnostic comparisons from Starlink’s troubleshooting guidance, not laboratory performance tests or a guarantee of a particular speed.
Test around a third-party router
If you use a separate router, mesh system, or other network hardware, Starlink advises connecting a computer by Ethernet directly to the Starlink power supply or bypassing the added router for a more accurate test. This removes the extra device and its configuration from the path. If the direct result is better, reconnect the added equipment and investigate its settings, cabling, placement, or firmware using that equipment’s documentation.

Check the dish’s sky view for obstructions
Open Check for Obstructions in the Starlink app and scan the dish’s view of the sky. Trees, buildings, poles, debris, material buildup, and snow can interrupt visibility and cause drops. The app’s obstruction result is more useful than judging the installation from the ground, because the dish needs an unobstructed view across its operating area.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If the tool confirms an obstruction, choose a safe remedy:
- Relocate the dish to a location with a clearer view.
- Raise it with an appropriate mount when that is safe and compatible with the hardware.
- Clear the obstruction only when you can do so without climbing, handling equipment, or cutting vegetation dangerously.
- Contact a qualified installer when relocation or clearing cannot be completed safely.
Starlink summarizes the remedy this way: “The simplest way to fix your obstruction-related interruptions is to use the ‘Check for Obstructions’ tool in the Starlink app to find a location on your property that does not contain obstructions, and relocate your Starlink.” Treat that as a placement instruction, not as a reason to move a dish before the app identifies a blocked view. Do not attempt an unsafe roof, pole, or tree installation.
Inspect cables, ports, and power connections
Unplug the equipment before inspecting connections. Look along the full cable route for nicks, cuts, crushed sections, hard bends, exposed conductors, or weather damage. Check both ends for loose seating and inspect adapters, extensions, and ports for debris. A cable that looks intact at the router can still be damaged farther along its route.
Starlink recommends official cables for compatibility. If you find visible damage or a diagnosed cable fault, match any replacement to the exact Starlink hardware model and follow the applicable connection instructions. Guidance can differ for Starlink Mini, so do not assume that a connector or cable procedure for another model applies to it. If you cannot determine the correct part or the fault is intermittent without visible damage, include photographs and the model information in a support request instead of repeatedly reconnecting powered equipment.

Temporarily remove added network equipment
Disconnect third-party routers, mesh nodes, and switches, then retest using only the Starlink equipment. Change one element at a time and keep the same test device and location. If performance or stability returns with the added equipment removed, the Starlink connection is not proven to be at fault; investigate the removed device and its configuration.
When you reconnect a mesh system or secondary router, note whether the symptom returns immediately or only in certain rooms. That timing helps distinguish a local wireless-placement issue from a broader service problem. Avoid buying a new mesh node or switch until the bypass test demonstrates that the existing added equipment is involved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for weather, time of day, and plan conditions
Weather-related changes
Weather can coincide with brief drops or slower service. Compare the app history and repeated tests during clear and poor weather instead of treating one storm-time result as proof of permanent hardware failure. If the issue disappears when conditions improve, preserve that pattern for support.
Peak-period congestion
Starlink says speeds may temporarily decrease during peak network times. If the slowdown clusters around busy periods while the same devices work better at quieter times, local demand is a plausible service condition. Repeat tests at both times and record the results; do not use a single off-peak test to promise that the connection will remain at that speed during peak demand.
Roam and plan conditions
Starlink notes that Roam service may be slower in congested areas. If you use a Roam plan, compare the symptom with the plan and location conditions shown in your account. A plan-related speed pattern will not be fixed by moving a router, replacing an Ethernet cable, or changing Wi‑Fi bands.

- No clear cause after these tests: gather the evidence below and contact Starlink support through the app.
What to include in a Starlink support ticket
Submit the ticket through the Starlink app after completing the isolation checks. A useful report describes the pattern rather than saying only “slow internet.” Include:
- When the problem occurs and whether it follows a time of day or weather pattern.
- Whether one device or every device is affected.
- Whether the affected device was on Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, and which Wi‑Fi band was tested.
- Whether a VPN was enabled during the comparison.
- Results from the Advanced Speed Test, including Router → Internet, Device → Router, and Device → Internet when available.
- Whether the symptom changed after a supported reboot or after bypassing third-party routers, mesh nodes, or switches.
- Any obstruction result and the current dish environment.
- Clear photographs of the installation, cable routing, connections, and router placement.
Photographs should show enough of the route and placement to reveal bends, exposure, loose connections, or a blocked view. Keep the original files so support can inspect detail, and mention the hardware model, especially when the installation is a Starlink Mini or another setup with different connection guidance.
Common mistakes that prolong troubleshooting
- Testing only one device: you cannot tell whether the fault is local or network-wide.
- Changing Wi‑Fi band and location together: the result does not show which change mattered.
- Replacing a cable before checking its category: a new cable does not address congestion, weather, obstructions, or a VPN.
- Leaving a mesh system connected during every test: the added equipment can hide the behavior of the Starlink router.
- Relying on one speed result: peak demand and weather can change temporary performance.
- Using Gen 3 light meanings on another model: confirm that the hardware guide matches your router.
- Attempting an unsafe dish relocation: use professional assistance when access, mounting, or clearing is hazardous.
When a purchased accessory is justified
Buy or install something only after a diagnostic result identifies the matching problem. A Cat5e-or-higher Ethernet cable is relevant when a wired device uses a cable below Cat5e or the existing cable is damaged. A compatible Starlink replacement cable is relevant after visible damage or a confirmed cable fault. A mount or professional installation is relevant after the obstruction tool identifies a blocked view and the proposed location can be installed safely. None of these accessories is a general cure for congestion, an outage, VPN routing, weak Wi‑Fi caused by distance, or a plan condition.

You have a defensible diagnosis when the symptom changes predictably in a controlled comparison: one device improves beside the router, 5 GHz outperforms 2.4 GHz near the router, a VPN-free test differs, a below-Cat5e link is corrected, the obstruction result changes after safe relocation, or performance returns when third-party equipment is bypassed. If no comparison produces a clear pattern and the issue affects all devices, stop swapping parts and send the app ticket with the recorded evidence and photographs.
