Slow IPv6 on Linux is usually a symptom, not a diagnosis. Separate name-resolution delay, address selection, local route choice, path latency or loss, path-MTU problems, and application behavior before changing settings. Compare the same service over IPv6 and IPv4, test a numeric IPv6 address, inspect the route Linux resolves, measure modest probes, check the path MTU, and then retest the real application.

Start with a controlled comparison

Use one destination and one service whenever possible. A hostname can introduce DNS lookup time and can return several candidate addresses; a numeric address removes most of that ambiguity. Compare IPv6 and IPv4 under similar conditions, from the same Linux host and during the same network conditions.

getent ahosts example.com
ping -6 -c 5 2001:db8::1
ping -4 -c 5 example.com

2001:db8::1 is reserved for documentation and is not a public test host. Replace it with a real IPv6 destination appropriate to your network. The getent command is a practical resolver-facing comparison; the detailed behavior of the command depends on your distribution’s name-service configuration. Do not treat one host’s replies as a measurement of the entire IPv6 Internet.

Record where the delay occurs:

  • Before a connection starts: suspect name resolution or address selection.
  • After a connection starts, with high round-trip time or loss: investigate the IPv6 path.
  • Only with larger requests or sustained transfers: investigate path MTU and packet handling.
  • Only in one program: inspect that application’s connection, proxy, timeout, or protocol behavior.

A difference between IPv6 and IPv4 is a clue, not proof of a particular cause. It can reflect different DNS results, different routes, different providers, filtering, or the remote service’s IPv6 configuration.

Determine whether DNS or address selection is slow

Linux applications commonly obtain socket addresses for a hostname through getaddrinfo(). That operation can return one or more addresses and can be requested for either address family. Consequently, a browser or command-line client may have several candidate destinations and may spend time trying one before another succeeds.

Compare a hostname with a numeric destination

  1. Connect to the service by hostname and note the time until the connection is established.
  2. Connect to the same service by a known numeric IPv6 address, using a method supported by the application.
  3. Compare the result with an IPv4 connection to the same service.

If the numeric address is prompt but the hostname is slow, the delay is likely before or during address selection rather than in the IPv6 packet path. If both forms are slow, continue with route and path tests. A numeric test must use the correct address for the service; a web server may require the hostname for virtual hosting even when the network path is healthy.

Inspect the returned candidates without over-interpreting them

Run:

getent ahosts example.com

Use the output as a way to see what your configured name-service stack returns for that name. The Linux getaddrinfo() manual explains that hostname lookup produces a list of socket addresses, but it does not prescribe one resolver daemon, DNS layout, or timeout policy for every distribution. Distribution-specific resolver services and application libraries can therefore produce different timing.

Recognize address-family fallback symptoms

A client that receives an IPv6 address may attempt IPv6 first, wait for a timeout, and then use IPv4. The visible symptom is a slow page or connection even though the eventual transfer uses IPv4. Confirm this by comparing explicit IPv6 and IPv4 attempts and by testing a numeric IPv6 destination. Do not disable IPv6 merely because fallback is slow; first establish whether the IPv6 route, remote host, or local policy is responsible.

Inspect the route Linux will actually use

Listing the route table is not the same as resolving a route for a particular destination. Ask the kernel for the selected route:

ip -6 route get 2001:db8::1

The ip route get operation resolves the route for the destination and can show the selected device, next hop, and source address. Compare those details with your intended network design. Check for an unexpected interface, gateway, source prefix, or policy-routing result.

What to verify in the result

  • Device: Is traffic leaving through the expected Ethernet, Wi-Fi, tunnel, or virtual interface?
  • Gateway: Does the next hop belong to the link and upstream design you expect?
  • Source address: Is Linux choosing a usable address from the intended prefix?
  • Route specificity: Is a more-specific route or policy rule diverting this destination?
  • MTU information: Is the route carrying an MTU that differs from the interface’s expected value?

Do not change routes just because the output looks unfamiliar. First compare it with the network’s intended design and with a destination that demonstrates the problem. An incorrect route can create loss or a long fallback delay, while a correct route may simply expose a slow upstream path.

Measure reachability and round-trip behavior with ping

Use a small number of probes to a numeric destination, then repeat with IPv4:

ping -6 -c 5 2001:db8::1
ping -4 -c 5 example.com

The -6 and -4 options force the address family. The count keeps the test modest and reproducible. Record packet loss and the reported round-trip times, and run the comparison against the same service when possible.

Interpret ping results carefully

  • No replies: The destination or an intermediate network may filter or deprioritize ICMP echo. No reply does not prove that TCP or another application protocol is unusable.
  • High round-trip time: The IPv6 path may be longer, congested, or otherwise impaired, but the result is specific to that destination and time.
  • Intermittent loss: Investigate the path and local link, while remembering that ICMP treatment may differ from application traffic.
  • Good ping, slow application: Continue with path-MTU and application-level testing; successful echo replies do not establish good TCP setup, throughput, or protocol performance.

The ping manual also documents numeric-output options, packet size, and path-MTU controls. Use those options deliberately when testing a specific hypothesis rather than changing several variables at once.

Trace the path and discover the path MTU

Run:

tracepath -6 example.com

tracepath traces the route while discovering path MTU (PMTU). Its output can include hop round-trip times and changes in the largest packet size that the path can carry without fragmentation. It is designed to run without elevated privileges according to its manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for size-sensitive symptoms

A classic PMTU symptom is that small probes succeed while larger requests, TLS handshakes, or sustained transfers stall. On IPv6, routers do not fragment packets in transit; the sender must learn a usable packet size through PMTU discovery and the relevant ICMPv6 messages. A broken tunnel, firewall, or filtering rule can prevent that feedback from reaching the sender.

Use the tracepath output to look for a PMTU value that drops along the route or for message-too-large indications. Treat the result as evidence about that destination and path, not as a universal setting for your host.

Understand Linux route MTU behavior

The ip route manual describes an unlocked route MTU as one the kernel may update through PMTU discovery. A locked MTU prevents that discovery from changing the route value. An administrator who locks an unsuitable value can therefore preserve a packet-size problem; an unlocked route can also reflect a smaller PMTU learned from a particular path.

Do not apply an arbitrary MTU reduction as a first response. Confirm the size-specific failure, identify the affected interface or tunnel, and make the smallest change that matches the network design. After a targeted correction, repeat the same tracepath and application test.

Use traceroute as a complementary view

Run the IPv6 form when it is available on your system:

traceroute -6 example.com

Traceroute’s output depends on its probe method and on how routers treat or filter those probes. The manual documents route tracing and an MTU-discovery option, and notes that routers may cache fragmentation information; the final MTU shown can appear at a nearer hop rather than at the ultimate destination.

Missing intermediate responses are not proof that a hop or the path is broken. A router may forward packets while declining to send the diagnostic response that traceroute expects. Compare traceroute with tracepath, ping, and the actual application rather than treating either output as a definitive map.

Confirm the diagnosis with the affected application

Network probes answer narrower questions than an application does. A successful ping does not prove that TCP connection establishment, TLS negotiation, HTTP requests, DNS inside the application, or data transfer will be fast.

  1. Reproduce the original complaint with the same hostname, service, and client.
  2. Repeat it over an explicit IPv6 path and, where possible, an explicit IPv4 path.
  3. Keep the destination, request size, authentication state, and test time comparable.
  4. After a targeted correction, repeat the exact scenario and compare connection time, time to first response, and transfer behavior.

The Linux manuals used for these commands do not define a universal threshold for calling an IPv6 connection “slow.” Use the application’s normal behavior, a controlled IPv4 comparison, and repeatable observations instead of imposing a single round-trip or throughput number.

Choose the right test for the question

Comparison or tool What it observes What it cannot prove
Hostname versus numeric IPv6 destination Whether lookup or address selection contributes to the delay That DNS is the only cause, or that the numeric address serves the same virtual host
IPv6 versus IPv4 probes Whether symptoms differ by address family for the selected destination The exact mechanism; different paths and policies may be involved
ip -6 route get The local route, device, gateway, and source Linux resolves for a destination End-to-end reachability, latency, or application performance
ping -6 ICMP echo reachability, loss, and round-trip behavior when replies are allowed TCP throughput, TLS timing, or behavior when ICMP is filtered
tracepath -6 Path observations and PMTU discovery, including size changes A complete hop-by-hop map when routers suppress responses
traceroute -6 Probe-dependent path and, with the relevant option, MTU information A definitive fault location or final MTU under every network policy
Small probes versus the real transfer Whether behavior changes with packet size or application workload That a probe result represents all services or destinations

Follow the symptom to the likely cause

Only hostname connections are slow

  • Compare the hostname with a correct numeric IPv6 destination.
  • Inspect the addresses returned by your resolver-facing command.
  • Compare explicit IPv6 and IPv4 attempts to see whether a failed IPv6 candidate causes fallback delay.
  • Do not generalize from one resolver or distribution; resolver services and application policies vary.

IPv6 has a different route or much higher latency than IPv4

  • Run ip -6 route get for the affected destination and verify device, gateway, and source address.
  • Run modest ping -6 and ping -4 comparisons.
  • Use tracepath -6 or traceroute -6 to determine whether the difference appears near the local network or farther upstream.
  • Escalate with destination, timestamps, route output, and probe results rather than claiming that IPv6 itself is inherently slower.

Small requests work, but large transfers stall

  • Run tracepath -6 and note PMTU changes or message-too-large indications.
  • Check whether a tunnel, firewall, or other device blocks the ICMPv6 feedback required for PMTU discovery.
  • Inspect route MTU behavior; distinguish an unlocked value that can learn PMTU from a locked value that cannot.
  • Retest the original application after a network-owner-approved, evidence-based correction.

Ping is slow or silent, but the application works

  • Allow for ICMP filtering or deprioritization.
  • Use the application’s own connection and transfer timings as the deciding evidence.
  • Use route and PMTU tools to investigate only if the application shows a corresponding problem.

Every test looks normal, but one application remains sluggish

  • Repeat the test with the application’s hostname and protocol, not only a numeric address.
  • Check application proxy settings, connection reuse, timeout behavior, and its own address-family selection.
  • Compare the same operation over IPv4 and IPv6 under equivalent conditions.
  • Do not change kernel routes or interface MTUs without network evidence.

A repeatable troubleshooting worksheet

Capture the following for one affected destination:

  1. The hostname, service, client application, and approximate time of the complaint.
  2. Resolver-facing output for the hostname, without assuming that every listed address is usable for the service.
  3. IPv6 and IPv4 results from modest, same-destination probes.
  4. The output of ip -6 route get <destination>, including selected device, gateway, source, and any displayed MTU.
  5. The output of tracepath -6 <destination> and, if useful, traceroute -6 <destination>.
  6. The application’s connection and transfer timing before and after any one targeted change.

This record keeps local route decisions, path observations, and application symptoms distinct. It also makes it easier for an administrator or provider to investigate without guessing which destination or address family was tested.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Blaming IPv6 from one slow site: the remote host, route, DNS result, or policy may be responsible.
  • Using a documentation address as a test host: 2001:db8::1 is an example only.
  • Treating a route-table listing as a route decision: use ip -6 route get for the actual destination.
  • Calling ping an application benchmark: ICMP can be filtered and does not measure TCP or application transfer performance.
  • Assuming missing traceroute hops are failures: routers can forward traffic while suppressing diagnostic replies.
  • Changing MTU by guesswork: first establish packet-size-specific failure and observe PMTU evidence.
  • Changing several variables at once: one controlled comparison produces more useful evidence than simultaneous DNS, route, and MTU edits.
  • Promoting a single probe to a network-wide conclusion: repeat against the affected service and keep destination and timing explicit.

When to involve the network administrator or provider

Escalate when the route resolves through an unexpected interface or gateway, IPv6 shows repeatable loss or materially different latency to the same service, tracepath reveals a persistent PMTU problem, or the application fails only over IPv6 after local checks. Provide the exact destination, address family, timestamp, route lookup, probe results, path output, and application symptom. This is more actionable than reporting that “IPv6 is slow.”

Because the available Linux manuals describe command semantics rather than a universal performance threshold or a particular provider’s fault, the final judgment must remain tied to your host, destination, network design, and application.
